Music News

In music, students have been working hard for this first quarter understanding beat by moving and playing instruments. Most recently kindergarten classes have started learning rhythm, the sounds and silences on the beat, which they have read, written and played. Both Pre-K and Kindergarten began working with pitch to recognize the higher and lower sounds. We will continue to build on these concepts as well as the sounds of the instruments, and organization of music throughout the year. This year’s vision in the music classroom is to cultivate lifelong learners, creators and consumers of music. You can encourage your child by having them listen to music with you or write and clap rhythms at home.

SECURITY DRILL

Each month the staff and students

practice various security drills. In

October, our school initiated an

announced fire drill during the

morning. We were able to evacuate

the building in a safe and timely

manner. The staff and students also

practiced an Earthquake Drill and a

Severe Weather Drill and did a

wonderful job at both!

Updating Phone

Numbers

Updating home and cell phone numbers as well as current addresses are very important information for the school to have on file. In the event a child becomes ill and/or needs to be released early, information on other individuals to be contacted needs to be kept up-to-date. Thank you!

From the Media Center

Hello from the Ferndale Media Center! ECI, Pre-

Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes have

done a wonderful job of minding their library ninja

skills and learning checkout procedures. It's very

exciting to see how thrilled students are when

they get to take a book home. This November, all

classes will be discussing

authors, illustrators and MD Book Awards. We

will also identify the characters and setting in

books, while enjoying seasonal literature about

autumn and turkeys! Please help your child take

good care of their books and remind them to

bring books back on time. In December, we will

be having a book fair at Ferndale. Please look for

more information in the

upcoming weeks about this

event. It is a wonderful way

to support our school.

Thank you,

Important Visitor

Information

For the safety and security of our students and staff, we ask that all visitors, for whatever reason, show a photo ID and sign-in to the main office. You will then receive a badge before leaving the office.

We also ask that if you would like to visit your child’s classroom that an appointment is made first.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding with these procedures.

Brain Tip of the Month

Brain Language

“Don’t tell your children they are smart. More than three decades of research shows that a focus on effort – not on intelligence or ability – is the key to the success in school and in life.”

- Carol Dweck, PhD.

FEEC Counselor’s Corner

I would like to begin by thanking all of the

families who donated food items to Harvest for the Hungry! Our school collected six boxes of food to help Maryland families in need!

Our guidance lessons this month focused on Friendship Skills. In our Friendship lesson, students discussed characteristics of a good friend. Friends share, take turns, and give a helping hand. We also reviewed what to do if someone “is not nice” or says/does something that is not friendly. For example we could use our words “Please stop, I don’t like that” or choose to walk away.

In October, our PBIS team also kicked of our school wide “Kindness Campaign.” When a student is observed showing kindness (helping a friend, cleaning up e.t.c.) their kind act is read on the morning announcements. A heart is then added with the student’s name on our Kindness Tree located in the school’s main hallway. Look for those kind notes to come home!

As always, if you have any questions about our lessons or want to discuss an individual concern, please call me at 410-222-6927.

Thank you, Jennifer Billings

Playground: We will use equipment properly.

Home: We will look both ways when we cross the street.

Care for myself, others, and the world around me.

Classroom: We will clean up, take turns and learn new things.

Hallway: We will keep the hallway clean.

Student of the Month Program

Every month a student is chosen by each classroom teacher as the “Student of the Month.” This is a student who acts as a role model for other students, always displaying positive school behavior. Please stop by the lobby of the school each month to see the bulletin board that features the “Students of the

Month.”

Congratulations to the following students who were “Students of the Month” for the month of:

Reading Notes

November’s Reading Tip

To help your child connect sounds to letters (breaking the code), point out letter/sound

relationships to your child. Use books, cereal boxes, magazines, environmental signs, etc.

For example, “Stop begins with the letter S. What sound does S make? What other

words begin with that sound?”

Place pictures on the floor. Roll your matchbox card to the picture that begins with the “S”

sound.
