This edition will also update you on plans for Genesis 2018, now just 5 weeks away with details of the closing date for BioNewsRound Award sponsored by LBIC looming on 14 November, details of the Fringe events, the latest programme with 60+ speakers and panellist, exhibitors and those organisations registered thus far all updated at www.genesisconference.com.

Since our last edition, we have hosted partnering days for Abbvie and JT Pharma, a Leadership Day on Precision Medicine in collaboration with Covance, our regular BioWednesdays and this week participation at BioEurope. November doesn’t slow down with a Leadership Day with Catalent and two BioWednesdays coming up as we build towards Genesis. Of course, planning for our 2019 calendar is well underway, so watch this space.

Below you’ll find our regular features where we highlight successes from some of our members, Arecor and Microbiotica, our upcoming events and available discounts. Wales and Scotland having contested the Doddie Weir Cup last weekend in Cardiff, it is a real pleasure to highlight the work of the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation which raises funds for research into Motor Neurone Disease.

ON Life Science Leadership SeriesFrom Discovery to Clinic: Creating a Comprehensive and Efficient Development Operation

22 November 2018

Building on the success of last year’s “Getting Ready for Phase 1” event, this event will delve into the challenges facing the pharmaceutical industry to achieve clinical success.

The pharmaceutical industry continues to experience decreasing productivity and high levels of attrition. Inflation of molecule physicochemical properties and complexities in clinical trial protocols stand among the main reasons for these trends. The most successful companies can leverage different expertise, manage risks, and follow logical sequences of operations in an integrated manner.

Our event will focus on key considerations for transitioning a molecule from discovery through clinical studies including molecule developability assessment, phase appropriate formulation selection, integration of product development and clinical supply, and creating an appropriate clinical study design.

Programme:

08:30 - Registration and Coffee

09:00 - Welcome from the Hosts

09:10 - Introduction to the challenges and context David Elder, David P Elder Consultancy

09:55 - Assessing molecule developability using pharmacokinetic modelingJan Neelissen, Catalent

10:40 - Coffee Break

10:55 - Integrated Drug Product and Clinical SuppliesJulien Meissonnier, Catalent

11:55 - ClinicalMalcom Boyce, Hammersmith Medicines Research

12:40 - Lunch 1:1 Private Consultancy Appointments

14:00 - Close

Following the meeting, all presenters and Catalent’s Science and Technology leaders will be available for private, no-obligation discussions on specific programmes and challenges.

*Catalent reserve the right to refuseany registration.

Microbes shape life on earth and whilst there are a number that of course result in serious diseases, many are either benign or indeed beneficial to humans. In humans they function as complex ecosystems enabling essential life processes from the digestion of food to fighting disease and more.

Our understanding of the host-microbiome relationship most would agree is in its relative infancy. Research into the precise nature of the microbiome and its relationship to health and wellbeing as well as how it may affect a patient’s response to some therapeutic interventions remains a hive of activity within

the sector. Microbiotica, a spin out from the Sanger Institute that is at the forefront of this research with collaborations around the world with both Academia and industry, has recently announced further equity investment of £4M from Seventure Partners. Joining Cambridge Innovation Capital, Wellcome Sanger Institute and IP Group with the Founders, the new investment provides the company with a strong foundation on which to develop its own proprietary pipeline of microbiome-derived therapeutics and biomarkers. This investment, combined with reported collaborations with clinical groups

Often focussed breakthrough scientific developments and invention, areas of our exciting sector that perhaps get the short end of profile in conferences, reports and publications are perhaps those of innovation in pharmaceutical development innovation and intellectual property, yet both are critical to converting great science and invention into innovation and products. Cambridge based Arecor has developed proprietary formulation technology (Arestat™) that enables the development of superior biopharmaceuticals.

Building the 28-strong patent family (26 patents granted in key territories) must have incurred considerable investment, so it is great news to see

that the 2-year opposition process culminating in oral proceedings recently found in Arecor’s favour and one of their key patents was upheld. Arecor’s investment in research, including collaborations in fields such as Type 1 Diabetes with JRDF, has seen them create significant value not just in financial terms but also in the potential for patient benefit it brings as clients apply the technology to deliver innovative medicines. Perhaps these new medicines would be less effective, or even not make it to patients at all without such innovation being developed. The ability to secure string intellectual property positions on such technologies is therefore key to enabling investment in these areas of the drug R&D process and

ON charity of the month

After an inspirational rugby career, Doddie Weir announced in 2017 he is suffering from Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

is investigating gene therapy for sporadic MND.

To read more about the work of this excellent initiative and how to donate in order to enable it to furtherit’s cause please visit https://www.myname5doddie.co.uk/

My Name’5 Doddie Foundation

Harnessing the support offered to Doddie and his family he has subsequently established the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation to raise awareness of the degenerative condition and to devote his time to helping with research and supporting fellow sufferers.

The foundation has two clear aims: firstly, to raise funds for research into the causes of MND and investigate potential cures, and, secondly, to make grants to sufferers of MND and enable them to live as fulfilled a life as possible.

In June 2018 it announced investment of £400,000 into research led by Professor Chris Shaw at King’s College London who

ON website launchIt’s been a while in the making and a lot of hours, but we are very proud to have launched our new website. We hope you agree that it is much better and easier to use.

You may have seen an email from us recently in regards to your account. If you are unsure whether you have an account you can go here and check by entering your email address and pressing the password reset link.

The end of last week saw the first part of the ’My Account’ functionality launched, where as a member you can add your

organisation’s jobs, news and events. Do take a look and let us know what you think.

Implementing such a new system is no mean feat and we are aware that we may have come across less active on social media and quieter in our promotion about our recent activities. The next few weeks will see a spike in our activity with Genesis 2018 on the horizon and no less than six other events happening within the next five weeks. Do look out for invites to these events landing in your in-box and if you can’ t wait until then take a look on our website to keep up to date with our activities.

We are also pleased to tell you that we a currently looking for a new Marketing and Communications Executive, if you are, or know someone who would be interested in this role please do get in contact. https://onenucleus.com/jobs/marketing-communications-executive-80-100-role
