    Shelter Stories

Roxy, a one year old Chihuahua x Jack Russell was recently surrendered to the shelter. She had been purchased from an advert on Gumtree the day before. When they met her at the owners property she seemed a very affectionate, fun, happy dog and they thought shed be a great addition to their family. However when they arrived home and she saw their cat, a reign of terror followed. They soon realised that little Roxy not only hated cats but was pretty dreadful with dogs too. They had to do something to protect their cat. They rang the previous owner, who wanted nothing to do with them. They had the $400 and certainly didnt want Roxy back. Probably a good thing as I think Roxy could have been passed around a lot as she is a very appealing little dog, and certainly sweet and loving as long as no other animal was in sight. Shelter staff and volunteers put some work into changing Roxys reactive behaviour and although she responded well, her dislike of other animals wasnt going to be fixed quickly. Terry, who is in charge of our volunteers was on the lookout for a dog for his daughters family. They came in and met Roxy and felt they were up to the challenge. Shes only been with them a week but it looks like shes found her forever home and is getting the socialisation and training she missed out on as a pup.

How to save a choking dogs life If your dog is choking, and you expect to save his life, you do not have time to look in the phone book for the name of the closest emergency vet. Bushfire emergency plan

The potential for emergencies to affect you and your pets is very real. In the 2009 Victorian bushfires, lives were lost when people made the decision not to evacuate because they did not want to leave their pets. Many pets also perished because they were not evacuated in time. It is up to you to plan ahead and to be prepared before an emergency happens to ensure the safety of yourself and your pets. By acting early, you can avoid danger, panic and potentially fatal situations. Although individual needs will vary, the information on this page will help you to plan for the safety of you and your pets in emergencies. The Pet Emergency Plan initiative is funded by the Natural Disaster Resilience Program, and has been developed by RSPCA South Australia in partnership with the Commonwealth and State Government of South Australia. The initiative is designed to ensure that South Australian pet owners are well prepared to protect their pets in emergencies. http://www.rspcasa.org.au/information/petemergencyplan/

Woman Builds a Bridge of Biscuits to Quivering Shelter Dog

At an animal shelter in the Italian city of Ponzano Veneto, a medium-sized dog named Cornelia was rigid with fear. Too afraid to stretch in the morning or to sprawl out on her side, Cornelia lived in the crouched position, forever trying to make herself invisible. She was overlooked and distrusted by the shelter staff who had written Cornelia off as an unsocial dog, but when volunteer Ambra Carraro came on the scene, things slowly began to change. A great story to read about

  • "As soon as he hit the ground he screamed and I had a freak-out, thinking 'oh god, he's broken his leg."

A visit to the vet and multiple x-rays showed that Zorion, while escaping a broken leg, had a dislocated hip and a chipped femur.

The then eight-month year old pup underwent a femoral head ostectomy where vets removed the head of the femur from the hip socket.

"In theory, it heals up as a ball of scar tissue in the hip socket and can move like a normal joint," said Amy Butler, the dogs owner. "He was eight months old when he did that he was still growing, so his femur was still growing."

The operation was unsuccessful when, five weeks later, Zorion hurt his leg again and x-rays confirmed that the femur had not healed correctly due to his growth.

"Options then were that they could go back and take more off the end of the femur, but there was no guarantee that it'd work," said Butler.

"We could put him on painkillers and see how he coped with it, or we could amputate.

HAPPY HOME TAILS (ADOPTEES FROM AAPS)

Thank you to all those who contributed to this section of enews, again I had a fantastic response from many AAPS adoptees. Enjoy this section as I hope it gives a sense of success to a tough situation and provides motivation that one person cant change the world for all animals but you can change the world for one animal at a time.

  • I adopted Phoebe and Luna back in January 2014 and to date they have been cheeky, affectionate and strangely clever. Phoebe, the tabby, makes pigeon noises when she jumps and my friends have taken to calling her 'Pigeon'. Luna squeaks like a rubber ducky while she sleeps and likes to follow me into the toilet, demanding some love. Thanks :) Stephanie

Happy New Year!. Just wanted to send in this photo of Chubby the white and grey bunny who was adopted from AAPS on Feb 2014. He has gained confidence and has truly become part of our family. He is the sweetest most loving husband for our girl Lola and so affectionate to everyone he meets. We are so happy he is with us and thank AAPS for helping make our family whole. Warmest regards, Rochelle and John xx

  • G'day. I adopted Lolly from AAPS February last year. She'd only just come

into the shelter when I met her. She's such a sweetheart and

everyone that meets her loves her, although I was told she didn't get along with other dogs. Just from walking her I thought it was more excitement than aggression, I tested the waters with a couple of friends dogs and was very pleased she did in fact get along with

them. She does play quite rough as bullies do but I decided to get

her a friend. She now has a younger, bigger brother to play with

named Archy, thanks to the amazing people of VBTR.

I'm so happy they're both part of family and I wouldn't change a thing.

    Regards Travis Fiddian

PANDA Hi We adopted Panda 2 and half years ago from Keysborough animal shelter. He is an amazing dog! He is best friends with our other dog Bella. He loves long walks and biscuits! We love him and are so happy we decided to adopt him!

  • I adopted Sparkles (formerly known as Cous Cous) in 2014. I had been considering adopting a second cat for some time, but was concerned how my other AAPS cat, Sassy, would respond. Sassy is nearly nine years old and was adopted in 2006. She has enjoyed a very spoilt life on her own, but I felt she might benefit from a younger playmate. I couldn't believe Sparkles had been at the shelter for so long - she is so unusual looking and looks like a mini-lion. I introduced the two of them by the book - the slow introduction process took about six weeks and abruptly finished when I returned home one day and Sparkles had managed to open the door of her room and let herself out in the house. They will sleep and sit near each other as long as a buffer zone is in place! Sparkles is a delightful tortoiseshell; quite funny, naughty and talkative, but also enjoys a good cuddle. I know she had kittens at a young age and was only 18 months old when I adopted her, so I think she had a tough start to life. She has now got a Furr-ever home with Sassy.

Hello, We adopted "Houdini" back in 2009 at 9 months. I chose him above the others because his description outside his quarters read 'very vocal', and sure enough he has a yowl that could wake the dead. When we first met him he climbed right up onto my shoulders and purred like a lawnmower. I took him home a week later and renamed him Lenin. He is an incredibly loud sook and smoochy cat, even at near 6 years old and we look forward to many years ahead with him winding around our feet and trying to eat our people food.

  • Hi... This is my gorgeous boy Buddy. I rescued Bud in 2007 with a shocking case of mange, he was a smelly mess and very itchy with oozy sores all over him! He took several months to fully recover and Buddy became the most amazing fur kid and faux human! Shar Peis are definitely unique individuals and one of the most intelligent dogs I've ever come across... I love this boy to bits and what was going to be a temporary situation was very quickly one that we would never be separated! When I picked him up he was very scared, extremely nervous, very unwell and obviously abused as everything terrified him when I got him in 2007 and he improved so much but it took time and a lot of work. At AAPS he fell in love with Arabella and when he visited he always remembered her and fell into her lap with massive cuddles and love, she obviously made an impression on him and he would remember her to this day. Physically you would never know it was the same dog but he is still wary of some humans especially those who do not know how to handle or approach dogs, people who are aggressive and like to rush up and pat him on the top of the head they rush and lean over him because he is different and looks like a big teddy bear but they do not think, they scare the hell out of him, he is so good with it all but I see he is worried I really think this is a huge issue in society and dogs should not have to put up with it and unfortunately the dogs always take the blame for situations when it is the humans who need training! We need a campaign to teach humans!!! Love and cuddles from Bud to all at AAPS Cheers Fiona xox

Our baby boy Shadow was adopted from you nearly 11 years ago.. he poked his paw through the cage at me to get my attention... other kittens seemed more playful but he trembled in my arms, his heart racing a million miles an hour, but he stole my heart and chose me. Forever at our heels and between our legs, he couldn't have been named anything other than Shadow, and is the love of our lives. Marco Cappiello & Lazaros Papavasiliou

  • Billy was a little stray kitten found in the suburb of Wollert in Feb 2013. Myself and my partner took Billy to a shelter, where they determined that she was probably only a couple of weeks old and she should not be without her mum. She was too young to be adopted. The shelter offered to arrange for a volunteer to look after Billy until she was old enough to be adopted. About a week before she was to be adopted, we rang the volunteer to ask her how Billy was doing. She told us that she was doing well, but there was one minor issue. Billy had bonded with another stray kitten that she was looking after. His name was Boris. Boris was found in an engine bay of a car (which had not been driven) in the suburb of Noble Park, and he had been there for four days. During the time that Billy was in the care of the volunteer, she and Boris had bonded and become inseparable. The volunteer said that she would not let us adopt only Billy and that she would much prefer it that both the kittens were adopted together. So I asked for her to email me a picture of them together. Once I got to see the picture of them together, I was convinced. They were meant to best buddies and not meant to be split up. Adopting them has been the best decision I have made in my entire life. They are both so unique and different from each other, its like they balance each other out. No matter how stressed out or tired I am, I know I can always count on them to make me laugh and smile.

Meet Slade! (Formally known as Huey). My husband and I adopted Slade in May when he was 5 months old and he has made the perfect addition to our family! He is so cheeky and has such a bright and crazy personality that there is never a dull moment with him! I feel like he is my first child and I cannot imagine not having him around. Thank you AAPS for our beautiful little man :) Mariah Vowles

  • Hi guys. Earlier this year you sent a message to AMRAA about a husky boy named "K" (now known as Kal) who wasn't doing too well in the shelter. He was thin, wouldn't put on weight and was going nuts. They asked me to foster him but as soon as I saw his photo I knew he was perfect. I came with Mirella to pick up Kal from you. He was excited and badly behaved. Within two minutes of being in my house he shattered the dog bowl and was marking his territory all over the kitchen. I thought I had made a huge mistake! Within weeks Kal was totally toilet trained, knew more commands than my other dog and had better recall than any husky I know. He has become my shadow and I did indeed adopt him after a few months. He is such a special, smoochy boy. One day the back door blew open In the wind and my girl went for a stroll but not Kal- he sat at the front door waiting for me to get home! He is a puppy at heart but really wants to please. Were working on his bad habits but he's a fast learner. He loves everyone he comes in contact with and is great with kids and other dogs. I am so glad you guys contacted AMRAA because I wouldn't have even known about him otherwise. Thank you! Jess Mogielski

    Hi there,

This is my beautiful 2 year old girl Chloe. I got her from AAPS a few months ago. When we went to find a cat she had been out the back in isolation for a few months due to having cat flu. I told the lady what I was after and she showed me Chloe.

As soon as I looked into those big eyes I fell in love. After getting her home she was a bit shy at first due to all the room she had to run around in. But after a week she was running around crazy and happy.

She has brought me so much joy over the last few months.

I love her morning and afternoon crazy play times.

Thank you for letting me adopt her........Kim

  • Dear AAPS, Please find attached some photos of our big handsome boy Julius. We adopted him about 2.5 years ago as an indoor cat, but as you can see, he soon became quite at home in the outdoors, and now rules the back door! He loves to sleep on the bed at night (any part that looks most comfortable!) and weighing a little over 7kg you can certainly feel him. He makes friends with any human who'll give him the time, but as we were warned when we adopted, he isn't a cat's cat. We're so glad we tried the AAPS when looking for a furry friend, and can no longer imagine our household without him. Cheers, Alannah & Ash

    THANK YOU

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the supporters of AAPS Keysborough and all the people who contribute to eNews. It wouldnt be what it is without all your support and input. The happy adoption tales have been fantastic and really makes a volunteers day to read all the good homes the animals have gone home to. So thank you for not only giving them a good home but for also including them into your families . Have a happy and safe Easter and thanks again for all your ongoing support.
