Highlights from October
We were pleased to welcome Dr. Jed Meltzer, neurorehab scientist, for a special
presentation. Dr. Meltzer spoke about aphasia, dementia, and the brain.
Did you know that learning a second language can benefit the ageing brain?
Bilingualism, or being able to speak and understand two languages, has been
shown to have a strong protective effect against dementia, delaying the
diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease by up to 4 years.

Federal Accessiblity Bill C-81 The aphasia programs welcomed guest speaker and Speech-
Language Pathologist Elyse Shumway in October.
What is it? Bill C-81 will provide national accessibility for
Canadians with disabilities.
We want to ensure that communication disabilities are also
included.
Recommendations:
Workers would receive training in communication (such as
people working at passport office)
Workers accept other modes of
communication (if phone is difficult, try
email or in-person)
Allow people to use communication
supports
