Dr Chedly Tizaoui, CEng, FIChemE, FHEA is an Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering at the College of Engineering, Swansea University, United Kingdom. Dr Tizaoui obtained his first degree in Chemical Engineering (6-year path) from ENIG, Gabes Tunisia, his MSc from INP Toulouse France and his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Bradford UK. His research interests include water and wastewater treatment, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), ozonation, separation technologies, and emerging contaminants. He is currently leading several research projects aiming to develop novel water and wastewater treatment technologies using non-thermal plasma, hybrid ozone/membranes, polymeric membranes impregnated with functionalised graphene, and novel materials for passive sampling and environmental analysis of emerging contaminants. Throughout his academic career, Dr Tizaoui has devoted himself to research and scholarly activities and has played a significant role in contributing towards various collaborative research programmes in the field of water and wastewater treatment processes. He has supervised significant number of PhD and Postdoc researchers to a successful completion and has published extensively in peer reviewed journals and international conferences as well as authoring technical reports for several organisations. His research into water treatment technologies has been funded by major funding bodies including the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering and industry. He has been the head of the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Portfolio at Swansea University, a core member of the Heads of UK Chemical Engineering, and core member of the UK Institution of Chemical Engineering’s Research Committee. He is member of the International Ozone Association and member of the EU PhD School of Advanced Oxidation Processes. Given his international expertise in ozone and water treatment technologies, he has recently organised the 2016 EA3G international conference on ozone and advanced oxidation for the water-energy-food-health nexus. He sits on the editorial boards of a number of peer-reviewed scientific journals and been a reviewer for many international funding bodies and has recently edited a special issue for the international journal of Ozone: Science and Engineering.

Dr. Meghraoui completed his Ph.D. (1988) at the University of Paris XI-Orsay (France) on the Seismotectonics and Paleoseismology of the Tell Atlas in Algeria. He is a senior scientist at the “Institut de Physique du Globe” at the University of Strasbourg (France). His working group has achieved major strides, releasing pioneering studies on the identification of active faults in intraplate Europe and interplate major continental active faults. They have developed paleoseismic studies in regions with fast active deformation and large earthquakes, and in regions with low-level seismicity in Europe. In particular, and for nearly 20 years now, the combination of micro-topography, shallow geophysics and trenching in active faulting studies has led to the group producing numerous peer-reviewed publications and internationally recognized research papers (ca. 90 articles in ISI-JCR journals, 2500 citations). These contributions focus on the development of paleoseismic and archeoseismic studies and earthquake geology in different tectonic domains (North African Atlas, North and East Anatolian fault, and Dead Sea fault), and on the comparison between regions with slow active deformation and regions with fast seismic slip release. Furthermore, their research focuses on the development of a conceptual framework to deepen our understanding of long-term faulting behavior in earthquake-prone regions, and on studies of faults in regions with the potential for large or moderate earthquakes and related physical characteristics. Dr. Meghraoui has contributed to many international scientific projects, supervised 12 Ph.D. theses and coordinated several European and international (UNESCO) projects. He has served as an editorial board member for the Annals of Geophysics and Natural Hazards journals. He is currently an Associate Editor of the Euro-Mediterranean Journal for Environmental Integration (Springer). In 2016 Dr. Meghraoui joined the AJGS as an Associate Editor responsible for evaluating submissions in the fields of Earthquake Geology, Paleoseismology, Archeoseismology, Seismotectonics and Neotectonics.

José Paulo Sousa, Professor at the Department of Life Sciences – University of Coimbra (UC), and a senior researcher at CFE-Centre for Functional Ecology. With over 140 papers published in indexed journals, he has been developing research on soil ecology and soil ecotoxicology. On soil ecology, his activities are focused on studying changes on soil biodiversity patterns (using soil invertebrates and trait based approaches) to assess changes in soil quality derived from changes in land-use and landscape fragmentation in agricultural and forest systems. More recently he has been interested in evaluating effects of extreme climatic events on soil organisms and service provision in agro-forest systems (in Mediterranean and sub-tropical systems). Regarding soil ecotoxicology, he has been working mainly in the Mediterranean region and the tropics (mainly Brazil) to assess effects of chemical substances (mainly pesticides) and wastes and to integrate in ERA schemes of contaminated soils. Current interests include assessing landscape resilience towards habitat change and pesticide use regarding biodiversity and service provision, especially pollination and pest control in Mediterranean systems and evaluating interaction between climate change and pesticide use on soil communities and service provisioning. He is a member of several European Workgroups responsible for the elaboration of test guidelines with soil invertebrates, published by ISO and OECD. Since 2009 is an external expert of the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) attached to the Scientific Panel for Pesticides, being involved in the elaboration of the new technical guidance documents for pesticide registration in Europe. Since 2014 he has been appointed head of the thematic panel for Pesticides and GMOs for the Portuguese Food Safety Agency (ASAE). Besides doing active research, he is also involved in consulting involving both prospective (for Portuguese paper industry and Shell Thiogro) and retrospective risk assessment (for PETROBRÁS) activities.
