Feedback from October P/T Conferences

Agenda books – After a review of over 100 agenda books from all grade levels last year we found that less than 5% of them were used on a weekly basis. For that reason, we moved to a system that we hoped would be more manageable for young students. Each grade level prepares a monthly calendar/list with learning and homework highlights (e.g. content/concepts, special as-signments, tests) in place of making children record homework in an agenda book. You can find your child’s important dates and responsibilities in the cover of his/her RED take-home/VIP folder. Homework - Reading for 20 minutes in addition to 10 minutes of practice on math facts are expected every night. Other homework includes (but is not limited to) work on re-do as-signments, completion of unfinished classwork and prepara-tion for Passion Project presentations. Journals – Monitor your child’s work and progress in reading and/or math by having the subject journal brought home at least one night each week for review. We find that setting spe-cific nights by school or grade level does not work as well as parents selecting their own night for review.

NEWS TO SHARE December conference times will be offered via the Sign-Up Genius app. We hope this technology saves valuable time for everyone. Make sure your child is reading for AR and working on math facts at home. Teachers are monitoring progress towards the grade level goal. Progress towards these goals is used as a re-port card indicator in the Respect for learning category. Our BoxTops Campaign continues to bring in much needed money for our school programs. Gather everyone’s BoxTops and send them our way!

DECEMBER 8th – P/T CONFERENCES If you missed the opportunity to conference with your child’s teacher in October please make sure your sign up for a time in December. We’re experimenting with the Sign-Up Genius app! Everyone will be notified via Connect Ed / Blackboard when the link goes live!

Principal’s Message Contin-Tips Over-the-counter medications do not work for many cases. What does work is wet combing hair with a high quality lice comb in the following ways: front to back, back to front, and side to side. After all nits and lice are removed, this process is repeated for seven to ten days (removing any leftover nits or hatched lice). In addition, there is a fair bit of laundry, bagging stuffed toys, and vacuuming required. The final recommendation is to check the child’s hair for lice once a week for prevention with wet hair and a lice comb.

New Substance Abuse Lesson

All elementary school counselors in the Arundel and South

River feeder schools will deliver one lesson about substance

abuse prevention starting at the end of November and

continuing into December. This topic is in response to the

Opioid crisis in Maryland and the lessons will be taught in all

AACPS elementary schools in grades 3, 4, and 5 during

regular guidance times. If you would like to preview the

materials, lesson plans are located at https://

www.aacps.org/Page/5481. Please contact Lori Stuart, our

school counselor at [email protected] or 410 222-

6501 if you have any questions.
