I remember the Academy Awards of 1973 when Marlon Brando refused the Oscar for Best Actor. He did so to make a statement, to say that he did not want to be part of a community that mistreated the American Indian. His refusal of the honor separated him from the community who so valued him.

It is the task of the Jewish individual to be part of the community and aid others in their fulfillment of mitzvot. But what is the task of the community? How does the community support individuals in their Judaism? One way is to honor them, to recognize their value in the many spheres of our lives. Sometimes honoring individuals acknowledges a specific achievement, but, often, it only seeks to point out to the community as a whole the importance of this one person.

The prayer service provides many ways for a community to honor a person. A person may be given

the responsibility of saying a prayer on behalf of the community, or a prayer may be said for that person. Or, a person may be given the opportunity to perform some holy task needed for the community.

It is not always easy to accept an honor, for it carries with it an implicit acceptance of the community as well as a responsibility for action. One can no longer be anonymous in the community - you are known and valued!

The next time you are offered an honor, whether it be an aliyah, a chance to read Torah or an Ark opening, consider the great opportunity to be counted, and identified, among the community. Consider, also, the statement you might make by refusing that honor.

“Music with the Cantor”

When a member of our congregation passes away there is now no reliable mechanism in place for notifying the congregation of the event and the subsequent funeral arrangements. Neither phone trees nor staff calling are practical for a congregation our size. Many congregations are using sensitively worded emails or automated telephone calls successfully for such notifications. We are working to put an appropriate system in place and we need your help.

As we review our options we need to know what you think about:

1. Receiving email notifications.2. Receiving automated telephone call notifications.3. Whether notifications should be sent to the whole congregation

while allowing members to opt out of receiving notifications or just sent to members who choose to receive them.

Please email your thoughts on these questions to Joel Krichiver, Executive Director, at [email protected].

Please be aware that Shiva arrangements are often not announced until the conclusion of the funeral and not known to the ritual office until the clergy return to the office after the funeral.

Beginning December 21 this year, we will gather around the Hanukkah lights, spin the dreidle, eat latkes and jelly donuts, and celebrate the festival of Hanukkah. Hanukkah takes its name of ‘dedication’ from the Maccabees’ rededication of the Temple after their battle against King Antiochus. By reclaiming the Temple, the Maccabees recommitted themselves to a Jewish way of life. During the Hanukkah holiday, we rededicate ourselves to not only our Judaism, but also the values we place at the center of our faith. In particular, Hanukkah can be a time when we rededicate ourselves to the work of tikkun olam, repair of the world.

To that end, Beth Shalom is again offering assistance at several agencies throughout the Kansas City area on Christmas Day to allow for employees to celebrate Christmas with their families. Some of the agencies where our services are needed include Clarebridge of Leawood, Salvation Army, Cedarlake Village, Rose Brooks Center, Grand Court, Episcopal Community Services, Safehome and Village Shalom. Activities will include playing games with residents, serving lunch, delivering food and handing out holiday gifts.

Please look for the sign up sheet in the December Scroll. If you have any questions, or want to help with December Outreach, please contact Carla Oppenheimer at [email protected]. Deadline for registration is December 18.

a d u l t l e a r n i n gQuestion: Why do we wash our hands after leaving the cemetery?

Keruv Corner - קרוב CornerA Journey Toward Shabbat - A Personal Story from a FamilyHere I am again, rushing to get ready for Shabbat. Every Friday I struggle to prepare a nice meal and get my house in order before sundown. As usual, I am not sure that I will have everything done in time. Isn’t Shabbat supposed to be a time of rest?

I’m trying to get it right but am still learning. I feel pulled in many directions. My spouse wants us to attend Friday night synagogue services and our children want to hang out with their friends at the mall. I am not sure what is right for our family.

Our Shabbat may not be what my spouse, a Jew by birth, had in mind when we discussed having a Jewish home. None of us thought the seemingly minor changes in our lifestyle would be so challenging. Our family is a diverse group with divergent interests and needs, yet much of Judaism seems to require a commitment from the entire family.

We recognize the spirit and obligations of Shabbat celebrated through new and old traditions. We light Shabbat candles and bless the children. We share together in the Friday night meal. Little by little, I hope that our whole family will want to extend our Shabbat together time. Perhaps our children will consider inviting their friends to our home. Perhaps they will just want to hang out with us.

Learning to celebrate and honor Shabbat is not a destination but a process. We all work to help make Shabbat a warm, special occasion, a time that will bring our family closer together and a journey in which we all share.

It is a long-standing tradition to wash the hands upon leaving a cemetery to symbolically purify oneself from the contamination of a place of death and reenter the normal world.

Please note that the watering spigots on the cemetery grounds are turned off to prevent flooding. An open faucet for washing of hands upon leaving the cemetery is located on the west wall of the Yukon Chapel (the west wall is the right side as you face the door) and about four feet from the front. Also, the Yukon Chapel restrooms are always open for use.

Why Do We…?

The Melton Mini-School provides adult learners with the opportunity to improve their Jewish literacy with an easy learning environment. Though intense and comprehensive, the

course speaks to learners of all levels and backgrounds. With no homework, the course is designed for the adult learner.

The course includes 30 self-contained lessons that address specific themes. Questions are encouraged, as the sharing of ideas is what makes this style of learning so meaningful. The course is taught by area rabbis and Jewish educators whose backgrounds span the different Jewish movements.

Melton Mini-SchoolStudents attend class once each week for 30 weeks during the school year (one year at a time). Each module is presented by a different teacher for one hour (two hours total, each class meeting). First year classes will meet on Tuesday mornings, 9-11 a.m. or Tuesday evenings, 7-9 p.m. (both at the Jewish Community Center,) beginning October 28. Even if you may be reading this after the start date, it is not too late to join the class.

Important Dates:As the temperatures outside begin to fall, our thoughts are already turning again to summer plans. Deciding what our children will do over the summer is not an easy decision, yet experience has shown our students thrive at summer camps. Each child we spoke with says that camp, last summer, was the best summer of their life.

There have been a number of studies to determine which Jewish experiences have a lasting impact upon our children. We know there are several factors that help to develop a positive Jewish identity and values. These include family time, a quality Jewish education through high school, a summer program at a Jewish camp and a trip to Israel. Fortunately, our congregation has many children who attend summer camp programs and Israel trips, and as parents and educators we see positive results. Last year we had a number of first time campers, and in the words of one of our students, “we had a wonderful time; it was like paradise to me!”

Finding the right program takes some investigation on the part of the parents. Camp Ramah in Wisconsin is one camp that we strongly support and encourage parents to consider. Programs start with students entering 5th grade. We will have students who have gone to Ramah share their thoughts and there will be time for parents to meet with Rabbi Soloff, the director of Ramah Wisconsin on

Wednesday, November 5 at 6:15 p.m. at Lamar. A deli dinner will be provided prior to the meeting as well as information about scholarship opportunities. It is our hope to add even more students to the growing list of campers this summer. Please contact Debby Agron, 913-647-7281 if you plan to attend.

The application deadline for scholarships for this year’s Summer Camp programs is February 1, 2009. With the current economic downturn, the committee anticipates an increased need; and to be fair to all who apply, we must have applications submitted in a timely manner. This policy will be strictly enforced. For more information or to get an application, please contact Linda Francisco, 913-647-7271 or [email protected].

The information from the focus groups is currently under analysis, after which the congregational survey will be developed for distribution in November. Please don’t be disappointed if you were not chosen for a focus group. We hope that all congregants will use the opportunity of the survey to share their thoughts. Multiple members within a household are encouraged to respond. The results will be analyzed by the steering committee and an enlarged planning committee during a retreat in December. Recommendations will be presented to the board and the congregation.

A great deal of energy is currently focused on the strategic plan by congregants who care deeply about our direction. I urge you to participate in this process by thoughtfully completing the congregational survey. Our future is at stake.

As a people, we Jews are known to speak our minds. Life cycle events and worship services are often defining moments for us, and we have certain expectations in mind. Many people are striving for a certain image of how a synagogue “should be.” It seems that most everyone has an idea of a way to make improvements.

Now you have your chance to be heard. Beth Shalom received a grant in 2007 from the Jewish Heritage Foundation that was directed for a strategic plan. Chaired by Gary Cortés and Susie Goldsmith, this process began in April 2008 with the selection of the same consultants who had assisted us in the 1999 strategic planning process.

The strategic plan steering committee, assisted by our consultants, began by conducting focus groups. These groups were selected based on age demographics. The sessions, facilitated by our consultants, sought to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of our congregation. Participants were asked to identify areas of conflict, challenge, goals, and trends to guide the committee in developing a congregational survey. See the article below for more details on the strategic planning process.

Committee chairs Gary Cortés and Susie Goldsmith are pleased to announce that the seven Focus Group meetings have now been completed. Participants who attended have reported that their experiences were very enjoyable and that there was excellent discussion and positive exchange of ideas. The consultants have provided a preliminary report on the focus groups to the steering committee, which will now write the congregational survey, based upon the issues and ideas discussed in the focus groups. The survey will be ready around Thanksgiving and all adult congregants are encouraged to share their thoughts by completing the survey. In this way, every member will play an integral role in shaping the future of Congregation Beth Shalom. Completion of the Strategic Plan is targeted for Spring 2009.

Strategic Plan Process Moves to Next Phase

Did you guess that last month’s congregant was Peter Loftspring? If you have not yet had the pleasure of meeting Peter, his charming wife and two wonderful children, then you are in for a real treat! Please make a point of greeting them and making them feel welcome as newer members of Beth Shalom.

While the Loftsprings are still in their first decade of membership,

this month’s Mystery Congregant is just beginning her second decade of membership. However, please be aware that until this month, the Mystery Congregant column has concentrated on members in the middle decades of life. This month’s Mystery Congregant has been a member of Beth Shalom all her life; in fact, she even had her baby naming ceremony at Beth Shalom. She is a graduate of our preschool and attends services with her parents and siblings. Her favorite thing about services is the candy that follows the Torah. She attended the Jewish Community Center Ranch Camp this summer and likes to play basketball, do Hip Hop and ride her bike. She used to wear glasses, but they have been replaced by contacts. Look around and meet some of our younger congregants and see if you can figure out who is this month’s Mystery Congregant.

Peter Loftspring

More than 30 Board of Directors recently participated in a retreat in which they learned about the policies and procedures

of the synagogue. Listening to Alan Edelman as he leads the session are Richard Simon, Mike Rogovein, & Jen Paul.

The preschool is buzzing with love, activity, laughter and learning. November is no exception. The first of November will be filled with election activity as the children see and begin to understand what voting is like and why it is so important that every person votes. On November 5, the Zoo Mobile will be at Beth Shalom and on November 7, from 9:30-11 a.m. we will have an intergenerational program at Village Shalom with the Wings of Love Bird Show. Finally, there will be a fabulous Thanksgiving Party on November 25.

Activities are planned for the parents as well. On November 6 at 9:45 a.m., Jewish Family Services will present a parent workshop on Positive Discipline in the Lamar conference room. The 6th annual Shop Around the School will be held November 9, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in Goldsmith Hall. This is the big fundraiser for the preschool with raffle prizes and 40 vendors selling toys, clothes, jewelry and beautiful themed baskets. Come and start your Hanukkah shopping! Admission tickets can be purchased from a preschool parent, in the school office or at the door.
