BESTfor Women

Happy November, Soroptimists,

I am really happy to finally see the fall colors. It is my favorite season.

I cannot believe we are already moving into the holiday season.

Thanksgiving is always a reminder to think about what we are thankful or grateful for. My husband, Bob, has been doing something interesting for the last month or so. He was challenged by his Facebook friends to write three items that he was thankful for every day for one week. I remembered that I had heard if you wrote three items for one month, your life would be totally changed. So, he has been continuing to find his three things. I cannot say that his life has been totally changed, but he has made it a fun challenge.

I wanted to do a little research on this idea. Robert Emmons is the world’s leading scientific expert on gratitude. He and his colleagues, based on hundreds of studies, have documented the social, physical and psychological benefits of gratitude.

• Brings happiness

• Increases happiness and life satisfaction

• Reduces anxiety and depression

• Good for our bodies

• We sleep better

• Become more resilient

• Strengthens our relationship

• Promotes forgiveness

• Makes us “pay it forward’

• Good for kids

• Good for schools

In light of this information, I am going try to write three things that I am thankful for every day this month.

To start, I am thankful to be a Soroptimist for 31 years; I am thankful to be a member of SI Ashland; I am thankful for the pillow booth and all the proceeds it gives us to give the community; I am thankful to each and every one of you for all you do in our club and community.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

Gem of the Month: Topaz & Citrineby Kathy Garrett-Canape

There are two gemstones for November:Topaz – means, love, friendship, loyalty, faithfulness, strength, durability •and emotional balance;Citrine – known as the “healing quartz”. It supports vitality, health; en-•courages hope, energy, and warmth within the wearer; and means hope, cheerfulness, youth and fidelity.

SOU Women’s Soccer Tailgate: GO RAIDERS!

by Joy Dobson Way

We had a great time supporting our community partners, the SOU Women’s Soccer Team, coached by member Jenni Rosenberg on October 11. About 18 members attended, plus 3 husbands and 1 granddaughter. Thanks to the generous hospitality of People’s Bank (Ken Trautman via member Julie Reeder), we held a wonderful tailgate potluck party in the bank parking lot from 4:30-6:00pm. Thankfully, the weather co-operated and it stopped raining an hour before we con-vened. At 6:00pm, we walked en masse over to the SOU field and watched the game, which was a nail-biter (Final score 1 to 1) against College of Idaho. Colleen made some great signs, which we will will keep for future games, as everyone decided it was a fun event and we should do it again.

Fundraising held a Day of the Dead Party of Parties on November 1. Lots of Fun and Games and Information on the Day of the Dead Celebration. The latter was provided by Georgina who gave a talk and historical overview. Kicking off the party, which was held at Wendy’s, was a yummy lunch con-sisting of appetizers by Georgina, salad and bread(Sue Kurth), chili and cookies for dessert (Wendy) and assorted beverages. After Georgina’s talk, we played a few games of Zombie Dice (yes that is a real game, they sell it at Fun Again Games) with prizes awarded to the winners. Those at-

tending were Wendy Ray, Sue and Richard Kurth, Georgina and Terry Holderness, Kathy GC, Judy Faulkner, Carolyn Johnson and Christina Chris-tensen. It was great to have one of our new members at the party espe-cially since she stayed til the end and helped with clean up! Carolyn and Judy showed a real talent for Zombie Dice and walked off with Halloween/Day of the Dead appropriate prizes and Millie Pekingese Ray was re-warded for being a good dog during the party with cheese and a piece of

cookie.

Poinsettia Sale Coming!!by Wendy Ray

Our second annual Pointsettia sale will be coming soon. Sign ups are in November for delivery December 3rd. Fundraising will take orders and payments and bring the plants to club to distribute. We purchase plants at wholesale from Ashland Greenhouse and sell them to members for retail. Prices are not set yet per greenhouse - and the wholesale price will deter-mine member prices.

Plants will all be one size (medium) and we have ordered a variety of colors-red, white, pink and combo colors. You may purchase as many plants as you wish.

This is a great opportunity to help support a local Ashland woman run busi-ness and help Fundraising Committee raise money for Operations.

Thanks from Fundraising!!!

District 2 Meeting Reportby President Kathy The District 2 Meeting was held in Bend, Oregon, Oct. 17 -19. Kathy, Joy Dobson Way, Kathy Mooney, Carol Page and Janie Burcart attended along with 140 other Soroptimists. ‘The High-way to Success, 2014 -2015” was passed out, showing Federation expectations of clubs this year. Linda will post on our website.Highlights of the meeting:

Information on the “Dream Programs”—• Live Your Dream Education and Training Awards (formerly WOA), Dream It, Be It – Career Support for Girls (new program), and Live Your Dream.org. Violet Richardson Award can continue locally, but there will be no Fed-•eration or Regional support. We will be voting on the Amendments to the SIA By-•laws and Resolutions, passed at the Federation Busi-ness Meeting. Most important votes are: no longer having classifications and a Federation dues increase. There is a new on-line magazine from Region, called •Woman. There have been three issues so far. It is time to nominate members to be on the Regional •Nominating Committee. There is also great emphasis on Club Giving at the •10% level. Forty-two clubs in Northwestern Region gave a total of $75,000 at the 10% level.

I have information for the Live Your Dream Awards, Dream It Be It, Life without Violence (trafficking grants) and applying for Celebrating Success Awards.

October Blue Moon: Halloween Party

July 4th is coming!

Best Disguised: Feisty Felines Barb Hetland and Alex Zaremska

Scariest: Vampire Vamp Janie Burcart

Funniest: Guest Tammy Johnson as Dolly Parton

Best OverAll: Veiled Witch Laurie Schaaf

Cutest: Patti Lane as Dorothy with her red, sparkly shoes

Thank you Amazing Hostesses: Colleen Chambers & Adriene Trunnell and Mel Bailey (not shown).

by Linda Anderson

Membership put on a Hallow’d Halloween Blue Moon. Colleen & Adrienne decorated the hall. Marilyn Bailey convened the costume con-test with a Halloween parade of Soroptimist members around the room: pirates, hippies, witches, Duck fans, bees, felines, vamps, vam-pires, SF Giants, aging actress. Only a few of us eschewed the costume--and we will remain nameless.

Mel provided a scary poem wishing ill will on the tormentor of a “woman scorned” and a great scary, true story experienced and written by her older brother, read to us in a frightening

voice (Mel’s), in an eerie and dark setting, lit only by “can-dles” of worm, rat, and spider carcasses. It was awesome.

by Marni Hancock, The Public Awareness Committee

Save that date! Members of the Public Awareness Commit-tee would love Sorroptimists to participate again in the 4th of July Parade. What better way to promote our signature proj-ect, Soroptimist Strong Girls Strong Women, and raise public awareness about Soroptimists in Ashland than by participating in one of Ashland’s main community events. At our recent com-

mittee meeting, members reminisced about the enthusiastic past participa-tion, with special T-Shirts for the girls, marching with our women and color-ful umbrellas behind a blue Miata bedecked with signs. Do you have ideas for this July 4th? Do you know if you’ll be here? We will be checking on this year’s upcoming theme. Ideas ranged from “Live Your Dream T-Shirts,” with stars and wands for the girls -to- the girls and their lunch buddies repre-senting different occupations that girls so often avoid. We look forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions!

by Mel BaileyOur club has a long history of giving scholarships—nearly as long, in fact, as our club itself. We were chartered by SI Klamath Falls in 1946, and by 1947 our visionary founding members already were giving scholarship money to Southern Oregon College for a female student! We go way back with observing the importance of education for women. Around 1981, however, a big change was made in the funding for the SOC scholarship. Betty Lou Dunlop, club president in 1980-81 and a college educator herself, was the driving force behind putting a chunk, probably $15,000, of unappropriated service funds (accrued funds that had been budgeted for something, but were unspent at year’s end) into the Founda-tion at the college, so those monies would be invested on a larger scale than what we could do, and our investment return would fund a scholarship every year. At some point along the way, the scholarship was named: “So-roptimist Grant in Aid.” (Please: it’s just “Aid” - no “e” on the end!)This was not without it’s controversy at club, with some members feel-ing that the Foundation was not getting the best return on the investment. Ultimately, however, we stuck with the plan, left our money there, and were able to give a Grant in Aid every year. The amount used to vary depending on what the return was as calculated by the Foundation each year. I don’t recall what those early amounts might have been, but I believe that by the 1990s it was generally around $1000/year.In 1998, a lovely long-time member, Verona Wold, passed away and left our club $17,000—a complete and wonderful surprise. She made no provision for what should be done with the money, so after some deliberation, we added it to our Foundation investment to increase the basis for our Grant in Aid. (Note to ourselves: think of providing something for our club in estate planning!!!)All went along fairly swimmingly, especially during the times of good eco-nomic growth. We gave what we had—at least one time, as I recall, we even felt we could give two Grants! There was also one time when a committee chair didn’t realize what the process was for awarding the Grant so it never got done—we gave two the year after that as well. But then... you all know what happened around 2007. Times got quite dif-ficult, to say the least, and we were scrambling to give at any sort of decent level. We had entered into an agreement with SOU to give at least $1500 - and we were not getting anywhere near that from the Foundation. So each year the Economic and Social Development Committee had to come to club and ask for unappropriated funds to make up the difference. To ease that process a bit, in the 2012-13 budget proceedings, the club agreed to put $500 as a line item in the committee’s budget to use as needed to supplement the Grant—and it has been needed. It will be interesting to see what the amount is in January of 2015.In addition, however, over the last few years, it has been a constant topic of discussion in the committee about, really, what a small amount we give

Grant in Aid continued

Virginia Vogel ChallengeVirginia brought her $51.00 for 51 years of Soroptimist membership. She challenged us all to follow suit. As of this writing, $374 has been collected. If everyone participated, we would collect $506. So we have 74% participa-tion. If you would still like to participate, it isn’t too late. We will ask Judy to cut a check next week for the Ashland Emergency Food Bank, in time for Thanksgiving.

It was nice having Virginia join us for our Halloween Party!

In Memorium: Marian Eleanor Forsythe

Marian’s Soroptimist jewelry has been donated to club. Wendy is auctioning these off--for $31 so far. The Board recommended, and club concurred, that this money should be given to the SOU Soccer team in support of their road trips, as Marian taught in SOU Athletics.

Marian also had a Laurel Society pin. However, one cannot have this lovely pin without paying $1,000. If anyone who is a Laurel Society member wishes to, they may submit a bid for her pin—let Kathy GC know of your interest.

Note: We had a brief article about Marian in September’s newsletter.

in comparison to the need. Each year we read applications and interview women of every age and stripe that are putting together their families and education and lives in often the most difficult of circumstances. And with the incredible cost of higher education, our small Grant seems, well, even smaller. So in last year’s budget discussion, the committee asked the Budget Committee to propose that our committee discretionary spending be re-duced by $500 and the line item for the Grant be increased to $1000 so we should be able to give $2000 next spring. Our club approved that when the 2014-15 budget passed, continuing our dedication to education for women. The other recent change that you all have heard about lately, is that the committee proposes to “up” the minimum GPA that our Grant applicants must have from 3.0 to 3.5. (Our other requirements are that successful ap-plicants be accepted into SOU for the following Fall term, be at least an undergraduate Junior or Senior by the following Fall term, any major except Education or Nursing, and preference is given to those who demonstrate volunteerism - current or past - in her community.) The reason we raised the GPA is that we were becoming overwhelmed by the sheer number of applicants: last year there were 70-some for about six of us to sort through and rank. It was just too much. After conferring with the person at SOU with whom we work on this (as our member Barb Ross used to), it seems that we will have more like 40-50 applicants, which seems much more manageable. We will ask for comments about and vote on this at the November 5th busi-ness meeting. So, there you go: a little history of our club helping women achieve their educational dreams over a period of 67 years!
