Dear Families,
October is always a month full of kid
activities at Kids Country. Several non-
school days land in the month of October.
This makes for a challenge for staff to
come up with creative activities to fill the
longer days. Looking at the individual
school entries (pages 8-10) you can read
about several of the exciting activities that
kids experienced this month. All things
British at Trailridge culminated with a
“High Tea” complete with chinaware.
Even though October has several non-
school days scheduled, quality care must
go on. The administrative team visit the
sites and observe staff while training new
staff. Whole hearted effort goes into our
professional development. Take a look on
pages 2-4 to view the assessment forms
used to evaluate sites on a regular basis
which are very extensive. Feedback is pro-
vided to the site coordinator through the
forms and the forms are also provided to
the school principal. Certainly staff have
reason to celebrate as they have super
evaluations.
Our Annual Lights On Afterschool
(LOA) Celebration at Paradise Park was
also enormous in size and fun. Our ongo-
ing relationship with Paradise Park is ap-
preciated by our BASS patrons. We hear
so many wonderful comments from par-
ents as they enjoy their time at LOA. Lead-
ership at Paradise Park work diligently to
make this night a success. Hooray for
Paradise Park as they are an asset to this
community and beyond.
Blue October would not have been
complete without some fun amongst the
BASS leadership. To the ROYALS we say
you are the CROWN! You
shine brightly in our city. We
can certainly say JOB WELL
DONE and the enthusiasm
will carry to next season!
Let’s enjoy the goodness that is shared with family and friends during Thanksgiving this month. Be thankful for the USA. Be thankful for the comfort we live in compared to a third world country. Be responsible with your bless-ings and be a blessing to others.

Cedar Creek Kids Country’s first half day was a success and our
kids had a blast with our theme, "The Drive In". We started the
day playing a large game of Movie Tag outside. Then we moved
inside and the kids created their own
personal car out of a cardboard box.
They had so much fun doing this and
worked for over an hour on their car!
The kids then used their car to sit in
while having snack and watching a
movie!
Hawthorn Hill Kids Country is
just bursting with excitement
right now. We are starting two
clubs—our newest one is Scrap-
booking—and the kids are so ex-
cited. This club isn’t “just for
girls” and students will be ex-
changing pictures, taking pic-
tures, as well as bringing some
from home. Science club was
such a great success last year we
decided to do it again and our kiddos can’t wait for all the experiments they will be doing. One of their experiments
involves a volcano exploding pumpkin—how exciting is that!?! We also decorated one of our walls with candy corn
that the kids made as a craft.

Our Prairie View kids are SUPER excited about the new
stage that we got from Mrs. Marta at Richardson! Thanks
so much!!!! We love it!
The kids at Westview KC have been fired up about baseball this
year. With the Royals in the World Series, we decided to do a
craft to support our hometown heroes. Each kiddo designed a
baseball glove or bat with a baseball to show their love and
support. They turned out AWESOME! GO ROYALS!!!
Sunset Valley Kids Country had a blast for the October Full Days.
We went on a field trip to Johnson Farms and the weather
turned out to be fantastic. The children went on a hayride and a
tour to see of all the animals including pigs, donkeys, baby
chicks, baby ducks, sheep and goats. They also played in the
tunnels and balls, hay maze, sand bus, barn and jumping pillow.
Even Mrs. Frann, Miss Rachel and Miss Cassie joined in on the
fun!!!! On Friday we stayed at SVE and enjoyed a Fall Fun Day.
We made mosaic pumpkins, played pumpkin
bean bag toss, fall bingo, and steal the pump-
kin. We also had the Lee's Summit Fire De-
partment visit as our special guests. All in all,
it was a great two days.
Trailridge Kids Country had a very special activity for
our October 22nd early release day. Vickie Figg, one of
our associates, educated us on all things British. A tea
party was the culminating event tying all our learning
together. We enjoyed “high tea” complete with glass
tea cups and saucers, tea pots, raw sugar and milk. We
ate biscuits with our tea which were cookies from Eng-
land purchased for this special occasion. Some of the
girls and the staff dressed up with hats or tiaras.
Pleasant Lea Kids Country students love the expression, “The Bigger
the Better”. For our Town Fire Department craft, the kids along with
Ms. Judy and Ms. Jillyn, made a fire truck and a station for the house
area. The project took over a week but each day kids were begging
the staff to work on it.

Lets go Royals! *clap*clap*clap clap clap* 3LYNX students at Pleasant
Lea Middle School have been very excited for our KC Royals to be in the
World Series. Several kids gathered around the computer to watch one
of the games and a few sat by the radio listening. We have some of the
biggest fans in this program and the Royals would be proud!
Several members of Longview Farm's Older Kids Club played a
rousing game of Kansas City Monopoly one morning (one of their
favorite games to play). Despicable Me was the theme of a recent
full day, where children made their own minion goggles and then
played Pin the Goggles on the Minion. It was fun!

Keeping Everyone Healthy
Millions of disease-causing germs are launched
into the air when a person coughs or sneezes. This
year there are threats from the usual colds and flu,
and now people are worried about Enterovirus D68.
We have all been taught to cover our mouths and
noses when we cough or sneeze. It has been the prac-
tice to cover up the nose and mouth with one’s hands,
supposedly to prevent the spread of these millions of
germs.
HOWEVER---Those germs are then on the person’s
hands and unless that person washes their hands im-
mediately, the germs are then spread to phones, door-
knobs, shopping carts, computers, other people’s
hands, food, mouths—the list is endless.
The right and polite thing to do is to cough or
sneeze into fabric where the germs are trapped and
die. Usually the nearest appropriate fabric is a sleeve.
Using a tissue or a handkerchief may
trap the germs, but the hands can be
easily contaminated with the use of
these. Remember to wash the clothing as soon as pos-
sible.
Help keep everyone healthy. Cough and sneeze
into your sleeve. It is the right and polite thing to do.
Remember—the number one thing a person can do to
help keep everyone healthy is to WASH YOUR
HANDS!!! OFTEN!!!

TEAM BASS—The vision for the BASS Peace Garden – a
memorial and celebratory garden to honor Jake Cava-
naugh, one of our former staff members who lost his battle
with cancer, is nearing completion. RFP bids were received
by the District on September 26 and are being reviewed.
The Exit Interview has been developed and is ready for
testing. The committee’s new project is to develop and
implement a plan for the recruitment of qualified candi-
dates for the BASS program.
The T.E.A.M BASS purpose is to open the lines of com-
munication about salary, benefits, and quality of work life
issues for all BASS employees. Quality of work life includes
staff development, celebrations, staff meetings, and
evaluation by exiting staff.
If you have suggestions on how we can improve quality
of work life issues, please email Nancy McCutcheon. at
[email protected] or contact me
at 816-986-3452.
The AIQ (Awareness, Inclusion, Quality) Committee -
Our committee is currently working on an enrichment pro-
gram that would be implemented during the Spring Semes-
ter. It will involve students from Summit Technology once
again. Everything is still in the early planning stages, so this
is as much information that is available at this time. How-
ever, we are convinced that the students at BASS will have
fun while learning new and interesting information about
our enormous and at the same time small world...and they
will learn that even though people around the world have
many differences, they also have many similarities.
Chore Core—A summary of this year’s Lights On After-
school event is highlighted in this newsletter as well as in-
formation on the upcoming Parents’ Night Out . Don’t for-
get to email any suggestions you might have for commu-
nity service projects to Ryan at:
Below are the dates of future meetings to add to your

Lights On Afterschool Summary
Before and After School Services hosted our annual Lights On Afterschool celebra-
tion, a nationally recognized event, on October 2nd this year at Paradise Park. Although
the day started off rainy, the rain held off during the evening hours for us to enjoy the
many outdoor activities Paradise Park provided. An estimated 700+ people from the BASS
family attended this year. Our returning DJ, “Two Guys, a Girl and Some Speakers,” once
again did an outstanding job. Along with our upstairs survey room, raffle, and hot dog
meal, this year we added an art show where families could vote for their favorite art pro-
ject. The hayride and laser tag were a huge hit this year. The money from the $1 laser tag
donation this year funded $120 towards adopting a BASS family. Thank you for supporting
our program as we enjoy celebrating after school programs each year by providing a fun
evening for our dedicated families.
Listed below are the winners for the Lights On Afterschool prize drawing. A big
THANK YOU to the businesses that contributed prizes for this fun give-away event and con-
gratulations to those who won these great prizes!
Congratulations also go to Highland Park students who were winners of the Lights
On Afterschool art project. Grades 3rd-6th—Xylan C., Marie M., Natalie V. and Grant T. (pictured above)

Lee’s Summit District News
R-7 School District inclement weather
closings update
Inclement weather may result in closing, delayed opening
or early dismissal of school. If the weather is threatening and
there is a possibility of school closings, please tune into any
major local radio or television station and listen or watch for
"Lee's Summit R-7 School District." In addition to the notice
through the media, the R-7 School District sends a recorded
phone call to all students' families and all employees. Known
as SchoolMessenger, the service has the capability to send a
recorded telephone message to all families within minutes.
This service is used for school closings as well as other commu-
nication. If severe weather necessitates that students be sent
home early during the school day, these emergency calls
would go to up to six phone numbers per student, including
home, cell phones and parents' work numbers. If a snow day is
called the evening before or during the early morning, this
emergency call will go only to students' home phone numbers
as well as to all R-7 employees' home numbers. In the case of
families with multiple children in the R-7 School District,
SchoolMessenger will call the family just one time.
Families may also learn about snow days through the dis-
trict's electronic newsletter. All subscribers to R-7 News Up-
date receive e-mail notice of all cancellations, early dismissals
and late starts. To subscribe to this electronic newsletter, go to
http://www.lsr7.org/signup or call (816) 986-1014.
In addition, school cancellation notices are available on R-
7 social media. The first place to learn of snow days is via the
superintendent’s Twitter, found at @DrDavid McGehee. No-
tices are also placed on the R-7 School District's Facebook page
(search for "Lee's Summit R-7 School District" to become a fan
of the page), on R7 Twitter (search for "LSR7"), on the R-7
website and on the R-7 School District Telephone Information
Line. The District Information Line is (816) 986-1001.
Parents As Teachers scheduling pre-
school developmental screenings for 3-
to 5-year-olds
Getting ready for school starts well before kindergarten,
and parents of preschoolers have a variety of ways to help
their children be prepared. The Lee's Summit R-7 School Dis-
trict Parents As Teachers program encourages local parents to
schedule free preschool screenings for their 3- to 5-year-olds.
Parents As Teachers are currently scheduling developmen-
tal screenings. To schedule your child's screening, call (816)
986-2486. For more information, you may also visit the Par-
ents As Teachers website at http://pat.leesummit.k12.mo.us.
Screenings provide parents with an opportunity to see
where their child's progress fits in with standardized measures
of child development. Health, hearing and vision screenings
are also provided.
The developmental screenings highlight the strengths and
abilities of each child and usually reassure parents that their
children are meeting developmental milestones within ex-
pected age ranges. If delays are identified that may affect fu-
ture learning, parents can be referred to resources that will
provide help for their child.
