Today and always, we thank our volunteers and

parishioners for your unconditional dedication, support and efforts.

There are two major concerns in the parish that need to be addressed.

Issue #1: Parking and Traffic Mayhem—vehicles are illegally parked in handicap and designated areas and are blocking traffic and fire lanes. The safety and well-being of parishioners, visitors and children is of paramount importance.

Everyone is asked to conform to parking and traffic rules of the road as governed by the State of Illinois and enforced by the Village of Round Lake. Traffic and fire lanes are to remain open. Parking areas designated for people with disabilities are for those vehicles displaying state-issued tags and plates. Open traffic lanes allow access for first responders in case of emergencies.

Issue Resolution: Due to the high nature of public safety and health concerns, and to allow for emergency response, illegally parked vehicles will be subject to parking and moving citations. Vehicle reallocation and towing will be at the owner’s expense. Drivers are expected to be courteous and respectful of pedestrians and others.

Issue#2: We are experiencing a challenge in meeting quorums to serve in volunteer roles. Qualified volunteers are needed to serve in all parish boards, councils, and committees. The school also needs volunteers to actively participate on their board and school functions. We are seeking individuals with expertise in marketing and public relations, civil engineering and architecture, economic and planning development, facility and grounds development (infrastructure planning, construction and maintenance), and custodial services among other disciplines.

Pew Plaques The plaques from the 100th anniversary fundraiser have been removed from the pews, remade and placed on a permanent board on the wall in back of church. The wood board was taken from the altar of the second church. Over the last four years we’ve had to replace over 70 plaques due to damage that was done. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Do you need ideas to help a student master math facts?

Flash cards are not the only way to practice basic math facts. Flipping through the cards helps some students, yet others will continue to struggle. It is more helpful to limit the number of facts that are targeted in a session. I suggest selecting three and then adding a new card once the three are mastered.

Students can also practice facts with dice, dominos, or a regular deck of cards. The numbers on the dice can be changed from the traditional numbers of one to six. Just write the number on a piece of tape. A few stores even sell dice that have more sides and larger numbers. Dominos can be used in the same way as the dice.

When I have students use a deck of cards, we remove all the face cards. Then we pick a number as the magic number. If a student is working on multiplication, he/she will select a number like six. Then as another person flips through the deck of cards, the student calculates the answer to the problem. Set a timer for one minute and count how many problems are solved correctly. The student repeats the process trying to beat his/her own high score.

I am a paper and pencil math person. I like to write the answer to the problems over and over on paper. Many worksheets can be found and printed from a site online. Some sites allow you to create worksheets specific to the student’s need, or you can create your own problems on notebook paper.

There are also the students that enjoy practicing using technology. The options on the internet are numerous. Try Moby Max, Raindrop Math, or Mr. Nussbaum.

Chanting works too...for multiplication: 4 5 20, 4 5 20, 4 5 20. Pick a new fact each day, and remember to review.

Students like variety and fun. Spend a minimum of five minutes per day and limit the number of new facts being worked on each session. Create a personal record book and the student can see the improvement made after practicing. Happy calculating!
