PRO-LIFE DISCUSSION While reflecting on the shooting in El Paso, TX, the news broke nationally of nine people killed in Dayton, OH. During that same span of time four people were killed in Chicago, with another 43 wounded. The Chicago shooting only made the local Chicago news. It has been overwhelming to watch so many tragedies of violence occur across our country. The FBI defines a mass shooting as “a mass murder as four or more murdered during an event with no cooling-off period between murders.” Since the mass murder at Columbine High School in 1999, shootings have continued to happen and we, as a country, have done little to end this epidemic of violence. The reality is that, in America, no one and nowhere is safe from violence, specifically gun violence. Each of us carry that lingering feeling of not if, but when. Even Amnesty International was compelled to issue a worldwide travel warning for travel to the United States, directly as a result of the gun violence. Going to a mall isn’t safe, a concert isn’t safe, a movie, a school, a place of worship, or the workplace, isn’t safe. Gun violence has many root causes, including hate, poverty, and despair. It is a deeply intersectional issue, inextricably bound with our long journey for racial justice, economic justice, and immigration rights. The retaliatory gun violence in urban neighborhoods is related to the legacy of economic racism and poverty. Whether in rural America or a big city, all communities are affected. These tragedies are happening in the most progressive zip codes passionate about gun reform and in the most conservative areas passionate about their gun rights. There is a constant conversation in our country about our differences, but bullets don’t discriminate, bullets don’t pledge alle-giance and bullets don’t have political affiliations. We, as a culture, must recognize and admit that gun violence has many faces in our communities and without discrimination these actions are simplified and even amplified by the societal belief that a gun can solve our problems. With respect to our Constitution, (specifically our Bill of Rights created in 1789 and ratified in 1791), it does not offer an easy solution to our country’s gun violence in 2019, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. The solution might just be in the hands of our young people. The younger generation has literally grown up with this violence and they might be able to do what generations before them haven’t. Among young people, gun violence has become a top cause of death, second only to drug overdose. And disturbingly, solitary suicide by gun is being committed with increasing frequency. American youth has called on our nation to change course and we, as a nation, should listen to them, commit to a direction, and hold the politicians and, more importantly, ourselves accountable. The younger generation cannot do this alone. We must collectively acknowledge that the level of gun violence in the U.S. is unprecedented for a developed nation and only bold, new solutions can move the needle on the rates of gun injuries and deaths. There are common areas of agreement on how to handle gun violence. There is broad public support for common-sense gun reform. Universal background checks and extreme-risk protection orders are two reforms that have been shootings prove otherwise. Every day in America, more than 100 lives are taken by the deadly epidemic of gun violence. We must commit to holding the gun lobby and the gun industry accountable for weakening our nation’s gun laws, the very laws that actually offend and contradict the vast majority of America’s responsible gun owners. We need strong leadership in local, state and federal government, the workplace, in schools, churches and neighborhoods to stand for a peaceful America for generations to come. We are a tired nation and we, as a society, must act with an urgency to call this crisis what it is, a national public health emergency. The solution to ending this violence is complex and appears frustratingly out of reach. Solutions should not only focus on mental health issues or violent video games or societal influences…other countries have those cultural components without the level of violence we have in our country. Setting aside all of those outward cultural influences of the American society and not withstanding the argument, guns don’t kill people…the common denominator is guns. After all, how many home runs did Babe Ruth hit without a bat? But to put all the blame of our violent tendencies on a gun would be shortsighted. There are valid reasons to possess a gun. That validity is supported by the very argument that a majority of gun owners are law-abiding citizens. However, history has shown that our country has always been violent by nature, it is in our DNA, and our culture has always had a certain, albeit misguided, romance with guns. The image of the American pioneer in possession of a gun is mythical and movies have definitely romanticized guns, even though guns actually became popular and their ownership became widespread as a result of the Civil War. Civil War Soldiers took their guns home after having developed an attachment to them and the feeling that guns were essential to the way that they regarded themselves. We, as a society, need to perform a truthful, introspective inspection into our culture to understand why we, as a country, have such a propensity towards violence and why we consider guns such a valued attachment. After all, if more guns made people safer, America would be the safest place on earth. We all know it’s not.
