NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS
Cor ad cor loquitur… (A heart-to-heart dialogue…)
My dear parish family:
The Office of Concern Food Pantry at St. Cecilia’s Church in Englewood is conducting its annual
Thanksgiving food collection. This food pantry serves approximately nine hundred families on a regular
basis. Non-perishable holiday foods such as cranberry sauce, stove top stuffing, rice, yams, dried pota-
toes, canned vegetables and canned fruit are needed as well as year-round foods such as pasta and cereal.
Please be as generous as possible.
Last Sunday we held a training session for four new student altar servers. They will begin serving, with
experienced servers, next month.
Last Sunday, after the Noon Mass, we held a Prayer Service for parishioner Omoyele (Yele) Sowore’s
safe return home from Nigeria and for strength for his wife, Opeyemi (Ope) and their children. Many
people participated in the Prayer Service. As Fr. Jack remarked, we are a family and when anyone in the
family is hurting, we do what we can to help them. Yele was arrested by the Nigeria’s state security
agency on August 3rd after calling on the Nigerian people to participate in a peaceful protest. Significant
charges have been brought by the Nigerian government against Yele all designed to silence a powerful
but critical voice that speaks up against a corrupt Nigerian government and for the citizens of Nigeria.
He remains imprisoned and his trial was scheduled to begin on November 6th. Yele is a passionate hu-
man rights activist and journalist who founded the NY based investigative digital media site Sahara Re-
porters, an online news agency that reports on corruption, human rights abuses and other governmental
misconduct in Nigeria. As a Nigerian citizen, Yele has worked for the people of Nigeria for over 30
years advocating for a true and fair democracy in his country. As a permanent resident of the United
States, Yele has lived in the US for 20 years and in Haworth for 8 years where he resides with Ope and
their two children who attend the Haworth School. Ope, a graduate of Old Tappan High School, was
born in Old Tappan and raised both here and in Nigeria. The Monday before the Prayer Service, there
was a Community Action Event in front of Haworth Borough Hall, in which Yele’s situation was dis-
cussed by community leaders and the organizers tied yellow ribbons around trees in town. Yele’s case
has gained the attention of our government leaders as well as human rights’ organizations, and we con-
tinue to pray for his safe return home, and for this family.
We recently celebrated the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at one of the weekend Masses and a
good number of people received the sacrament. This sacrament is so beneficial to those whose health is
seriously impaired by sickness or old age. We offer the sacrament during the Noon Mass once each
spring and once each fall. In addition, the sacrament is available to anyone who needs it at any time.
There is still time to support the 2019 Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal. We have received
$18,200 in pledges. Thank you to those parishioners who have already shown your support and generos-
ity. Will you join your fellow parishioners in supporting this effort that strengthens many important pro-
grams and ministries across the Archdiocese of Newark? Our goal, $36,503, can only be achieved
through your generosity. If you have yet to give, please pick up a pledge form at the doors of the church
or visit www.rcan.org/sharing. Your gift will truly make a difference. Thank you for your prayers and
support.
Thank you for all you do to make our parish a welcoming and vibrant community!

MASS INTENTIONS
32ndSunday in Ordinary Time
“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us
and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace,
encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.”
2 THESSALONIANS 2:16-17
There are two important lessons here. First, we are called to be generous
with our encouragement and hope. As God shows us mercy, we must be
merciful to others. Second, joy is contagious! The joy we receive from do-
ing good works not only strengthens us, it encourages others as well. Share
the joy of living your faith whenever you can.
