The big debate raged around our glass-

works. Would we ever make a crystal that’s

not cut? We know many sommeliers and

wine connoisseurs consider the colour of

wine such an integral part of the pleasure,

they won’t put their persnickety lips to a

piece of cut crystal that may alter the effect

of the colour.

For many others, a part of the joy of cut

crystal is tactile. Tracing the outline of an in-

tricate pattern or a single smooth curve as

you sip your wine is a pleasure they would

sadly miss.

Finally, we hit on the solution. It wasn’t so

much a compromise as a way to have our

cake and a beautifully coloured wine to ac-

company it. We’ve created stemware with

a pristine, uncut bowl resting on a foot with

beveled cuts radiating from the centre. It

accomplishes the seeming contradiction of

being both clear and cut.

A finely balanced glass, it manages to be

lightweight and still have a satisfying heft.

It’s delicate without being fragile, substan-

tial without being heavy. Its elegant shape

is designed to enhance your experience of

red wine, blending the aromas and chan-

neling the flow to the appropriate areas of

your tongue. With the next pot, we’ll be

introducing clear stemware designed for

white wines.

The process of achieving pristine, uncut

crystal by hand is not an easy one. So our

annual production of these glasses will be

very limited – but don’t worry, if you miss

out now, we’d be happy to put you on the

list for the next production run.

To the uninitiated, the crafting of clear

crystal may seem no different, perhaps

even easier, than producing our cut stem-

ware. Not so.

Creating mouth-blown crystal that won’t

be cut is an exacting process in a craft that

is already highly demanding.

At the beginning of a production shift, the

molten crystal is at its hottest. During the

shift, as the craftsmen extract gathers of crys-

tal, the temperature inside the pot drops.

This leaves only a brief window, not too

hot and not too cool, when the tempera-

ture and viscosity of the crystal is capable

of producing the thinner walls needed to

create the bowls of clear stemware.

Also, blowing a thinner bowl requires the

deft touch usually only found in a long-

time master. This is a job for our most

seasoned craftsmen.

As to creating a piece that is clear in one

area and cut in another, that’s even more

challenging. To our knowledge, we are the

only crystal maker to accomplish the feat.

our clear stemware is the expression of

a concept first articulated in a poem by

robert Browning and since recognized and

embraced by all the creative arts, from archi-

tecture to literature. less is indeed more.

about the Glass

the Bowl & Neck It’s the “nose,” or aro-

ma, of a scotch that professional tasters

use to judge a truly spectacular distillation.

In fact, many tasters say they can get ev-

erything they want to know from a scotch

by the way it smells. our glass offers a

wide bowl to release more of the aromatic

gifts within. The narrow neck allows for a

good swirl, and channels the full bouquet

directly to your nose.

the flare With a standard tumbler, the

scotch is splashed randomly around the

mouth, but a proper rim delivers the taste

your nose has been expecting. our curved

Wish Bowl to help support the little souls

of the Children’s Wish Foundation, hoping

to the Foundation.

Nova Scotia’s Annapolis valley is home to lush fields and boun-

tiful orchards. It is a place of evolving life, of growth. A perfect

First built by the British in 1749, the Halifax Citadel stands

guard over the city and harbour from a hilltop vantage. Although

never attacked itself, it was an important staging point for troops

going overseas in both World Wars. For many soldiers, it was the

last landmark they saw leaving home and the first familiar sight

on their return. The straight, strong cuts of our ‘Citadel’ pattern

reflect this proud military heritage.

The margaree river is one of Nova Scotia’s legendary salmon

streams and recognized as a Canadian Heritage river. It flows

from lake Ainslie in the Cape Breton Highlands, through fertile

farmland and maple forests to the Gulf of St. lawrence. In our

‘margaree’ pattern, our cutters were inspired by the curvaceous

river valley and the straight, staunch trunks of the splendid

maples. This marriage of curved and straight lines has made the

‘margaree’ one of our most popular patterns.

In the mid to late 1800’s, the town of Windsor, Nova Scotia

thrived as a centre for shipbuilding. That era can still be felt in

the elegant victorian architecture throughout the town – and in

this beautiful pattern. Three upright cuts alternate with a series

of arches that harken back to the hulls of barques, brigantines

and schooners that once plied the waters to and from this

quaint provincial town.

Our Gift Registry is not just for weddings

anymore. Well, not that it was ever exclu-

sive to the bride and groom in the past, but

we’ve always referred to it as our Wedding

registry.

As it turns out, we have several customers

who had the insight to use it as their own

little gift registry to celebrate milestones in

their lives — like a notable anniversary, or

their retirement, and in one case, a cus-

tomer has it set up for all their upcoming gift

occasions, from Christmas to mother’s Day.

Whether you’re the lucky registrant or the

generous giver, our Gift registry makes it

easy. And whatever the occasion, from wed-

dings to anniversaries, we offer the attention

and service your special occasion deserves.

Some of the little extras you get as a reg-

istrant. If you’d like, we’ll provide an elegant

set of cards that notify people you are reg-

istered with us and can be included with

an invitation to your celebration or event.

People are then free to call, drop in or shop

online from the registry. We can also help

you select gifts of gratitude you may want

to give to those helping you celebrate,

attendants at a wedding, for instance, or the

hosts of a retirement party.

Your gifts can be shipped to you or your

guests at the time of purchase, or, if you’d

rather, we’ll send you everything in a single

shipment in time for the big day. And of

course, gifts can be sent unwrapped, or

wrapped in one of our beautiful wrapping

options as requested (see p12).

Our Gift to you. Twelve months following

registration, we’ll give you a gift certificate

worth 10% of the value of the purchases
