Gospel (John 10: 22-42)

The feast of the Dedication was thentaking place in Jerusalem. It was winter. And Jesus walked about in the templearea on the Portico of Solomon. So theJews gathered around him and said tohim, "How long are you going to keep usin suspense? If you are the Messiah, tellus plainly." Jesus answered them, "I toldyou and you do not believe. The works Ido in my Father's name testify to me.But you do not believe, because you arenot among my sheep. My sheep hear myvoice; I know them, and they follow me. Igive them eternal life, and they shallnever perish. No one can take them outof my hand. My Father, who has giventhem to me, is greater than all, and noone can take them out of the Father'shand. The Father and I are one." TheJews again picked up rocks to stonehim. Jesus answered them, "I haveshown you many good works from myFather. For which of these are you tryingto stone me?" The Jews answered him,"We are not stoning you for a good workbut for blasphemy. You, a man, aremaking yourself God." Jesus answeredthem, "Is it not written in your law, 'Isaid, "You are gods"'? If it calls themgods to whom the word of God came, and scripture cannot be set aside, canyou say that the one whom the Fatherhas consecrated and sent into the worldblasphemes because I said, 'I am theSon of God'? If I do not perform myFather's works, do not believe me; but ifI perform them, even if you do notbelieve me, believe the works, so thatyou may realize (and understand) thatthe Father is in me and I am in theFather." (Then) they tried again to arresthim; but he escaped from their power. He went back across the Jordan to theplace where John first baptized, andthere he remained. Many came to himand said, "John performed no sign, buteverything John said about this man wastrue." And many there began to believein him.

This is the truth. Peace be with you.

A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews (9: 11-15) Your blessings Father

Brothers and sisters,

But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come to be, passingthrough the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is, not belongingto this creation, he entered once for all into the sanctuary, not with the blood of goats andcalves but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. For if the blood of goatsand bulls and the sprinkling of a heifer's ashes can sanctify those who are defiled so thattheir flesh is cleansed, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternalspirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works toworship the living God. For this reason he is mediator of a new covenant: since a death hastaken place for deliverance from transgressions under the first covenant, those who arecalled may receive the promised eternal inheritance.Praise be to God always.
