Welcome to Nottingham Playhouse - a sparkling jewel in the cultural crown of this vibrant city. We're delighted to have welcomed so many new people to the theatre during the past year - and look forward to meeting many more this season. Our work is world class, made in Nottingham and as diverse as our community - do come along and sample the range of fantastic goodies we're making this year.

If rock and roll is your thing you'll love Forever Young, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg is a deeply poignant comedy about coping with disability and in Arthur and George award-winning playwright David Edgar dramatises Julian Barnes's gripping novel. The Harder They Come celebrates the music, culture and story of the great Jimmy Cliff and we close our in-house season with The Families of Lockerbie, a powerful, moving

new drama from acclaimed Nottingham playwright Michael Eaton.

We have superb work from around the world beating a path to Nottingham this year - Danza Contemporanea de Cuba are not to be missed, jaw dropping work from Brazil's Deborah Colker returns and, a real feather in our cap, legendary director Peter Brook brings his beautiful new production, 11 and 12, from Bouffes du Nord to the Playhouse in what will be its only Midlands date.

With so many things to look forward to in 2010, we hope to see you here soon.

A Day in the Death of Joe Eggby Peter nichols

nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company presents

Starring Mark Benton from Early Doors, Christmas Lights/Northern Lights and Booze Cruise. Bri and Sheila are the young parents of a disabled child (nicknamed Joe Egg) living by the rule of ‘if you don’t laugh you’ll cry’. Bri is a born comedian and has no problem in creating an imaginary world around the child, giving her a series of comic personality traits and conducting fictional conversations. To the outside world, the couple seem the very model of bravery and courage in the face of adversity. When two unwanted guests begin to question the family’s cosy arrangement, the darkness beneath their comic

façade becomes all too clear. A Day in the Death of Joe Egg is a funny and thought-provoking modern classic. Written by Peter Nichols, one of the greatest living playwrights, this comedy-drama is compelling and heartfelt and bubbles along with exuberance and wit.

In Victorian England, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the man behind Sherlock Holmes, is recruited to solve a mysterious case of his own.

Solicitor, George Edalji has been convicted of a terrible crime and is desperate to prove his innocence. After his release from prison he seeks the help of the expert crime writer to win him a pardon.

This powerful new stage adaptation,

based on Julian Barnes’s bestselling semi-fictional novel, vividly brings to life the events of a hundred years ago that made sensational headlines as The Great Wyrley Outrages.

As gripping as any of Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries, Arthur & George raises questions about guilt and innocence, identity, nationality and race.

The Families of Lockerbieby Michael Eaton

This powerful new play from local writer Michael Eaton explores the differing responses of the victims’ families to the release, in August 2009, of Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, the man convicted of the bombing of the Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie in 1988.

For many, al-Megrahi’s release was a grievous insult. For others, his original conviction was a gross miscarriage of justice. Whether it was a decision they welcomed or decried, al-Megrahi’s release opened up a new chapter in the continuing ordeal of all of those bereaved by the bombing.

This is a dramatic and compelling drama which doesn’t set out to endorse one faction over another, but to document the anguished, often angry, search for justice that persists on all sides.

Michael Eaton is an award-winning screenwriter with an impressive ability for dramatizing controversial stories. His credits include Why Lockerbie?, Shipman and Shoot to Kill.

MIDLANDS DATES

© Pascal Victor

We’re delighted to welcome director Peter Brook to Nottingham Playhouse in his only tour dates in the Midlands with his powerful latest work 11 and 12, based on Brook’s acclaimed play Tierno Bokar adapted by Marie-Hélène Estienne.

11 and 12 explores an extraordinary conflict in West Africa under French occupation. It shows how a dispute over whether a certain prayer should be recited 11 or 12 times leads inexorably to hatred and massacres. The question of violence and the true place of tolerance make this epic story more than ever relevant today.

Over the past fifty years Peter Brook has irrevocably influenced the landscape of theatre, and has inspired a new generation of theatre practitioners.

Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company produced The Man Who by Peter Brook, Marie-Hélène Estienne and Oliver Sacks in 2003.

‘At the heart of the play lies a dash of values between Islamic Africa and an alien civilization and a plea for mutual tolerance and understanding that makes this very much a play for our times.’ The Guardian on Tierno Bokar

‘Britain’s greatest director has pulled off one of his most densely spiritual creations to date.’ Financial Times on Tierno Bokar

In a new collaboration with composer Ezio Bosso, Rafael Bonachela delves into the world of signs and symbols that rule our everyday lives and spark our hidden memories.

The Land of Yes and the Land of No explores the human psyche, the power of imagination and the

body’s ability to give physical shape to memory, experience and emotions.

Bonachela’s instinctive, dynamic and highly physical movement is both beautifully abstract and intensely emotive, matched by a rich, expressive score from Italian composer Ezio Bosso.

World famous, but rarely seen outside of Cuba, this breath-taking company of 21 dancers bring the heat and passion of Cuba to the stage with an eclectic mix of contemporary dance fused with Afro Caribbean and Spanish styles. Working with the very best choreographers of the moment, including dance superstar Rafael Bonachela, these extraordinary dancers move seamlessly from classical to contemporary to Cuban.

Wednesday 26 May 8pm Tickets: £13.00

Stewart Francis ‘Tour De Francis’Sunday 2 May 7.30pm Tickets: £14.00

Reginald D Hunter’s uniquely non-secular approach to comedy continues.

A well-known face on primetime television shows such as 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and

QI, Reginald is also a frequent guest on Have I Got News For You and has just finished starring alongside Andy Hamilton in BBC4’s It’s Only A Theory.

Join us for a special comedy double bill with Shappi Khorsandi and Jon Richardson.

As seen on Live At The Apollo, Shappi Khorsandi is one of the hottest comedy prospects in the country. She’s feisty, flirty and effortlessly funny, she handles every subject with a razor sharp wit, softened only by her deliciously dizzy delivery and endless charm.

Join Jon Richardson as he gets life’s idiosyncrasies off his chest in his grumpy, yet uniquely charming, Northern style. One of the most in-demand young artists on the UK comedy circuit today, Jon currently hosts the Sunday mid-morning show on BBC6 Music where his unique presenting style has won him thousands of loyal weekly listeners.

Great comedians come in cycles. As seen on Mock the Week, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow and 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Stewart Francis brings his latest hilarious stand up show to the Playhouse. www.stewartfrancis.com

Our plays have an educational focus, and are usually supported by teachers’ resources targeted to specific areas of the curriculum. For details please contact Kitty Parker at [email protected].

Coming Soon: White PeacockWe undertook research and development during the summer term on Thumbs Up, a new project for children with profound and multiple learning difficulties. The outcome from this project was White Peacock, a new multi-sensory piece specially written by Gill Brigg.

The story is about Sam’s first holiday away from home and the adventures that await. The piece is about independence from family, the discovery of friendship, and the challenge of being able to make choices.

Six young people at a time can experience the play with 1:1 companion support requested. It is suitable for KS3 and upwards. To enquire about booking the show or for more information, email [email protected].
