St. Kieran Catholic Church Third Sunday of Lent March 4, 2018 I, the LORD, am your God . . . You shall not have other gods besides me. — Exodus 20:2a, 3 Notes from Fr. John T oday we celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent. In our First reading from the Book of Exodus we are given the commandments that were entrusted to Moses. These commandments or guides tell us how to act with God and with each other. They are laws that will build up the community when they are kept. They are laws that continue to speak to us today. The laws given by the God of Israel and the teachings of Jesus are all based on community or family. So as Christians we can never be satisfied that we are right with God if we ignore the world crumbling around us. We are all responsible for the world that has been entrusted to us by God. If that thought doesn’t keep us awake at night, nothing will. The community aspect of faith is helpful for the question of, why do we come to church? Fr. Tom has a great quote on the subject. “We come to church, because we care for others.” We gather together to pray and support those in the community who are in need. And on those days when we find ourselves needy, the community supports and prays for us. We come to church for each other, not for God. God doesn’t need our presence. God doesn’t need any- thing. It is we who need each other and find strength in the community. In a way when we choose not to come we are being selfish. Just another Lenten thought! Today St. Agnes is having their Spaghetti Dinner at the parish center on Halsted and 26th street. Dinner will be served from noon until 6:00 PM. It is a great chance to let go of the winter blahs and gather with family and friends. The Parish Center (formerly with family and friends. The Parish Center (formerly the Catholic War Veterans) has hosted many weddings and celebrations over the years. St. Agnes continues that tradition of family gatherings as they invite the community to join them for spaghetti and fellowship. Tickets can be purchased at the door and carry outs are available. All profit goes to the parish and school to pay the bills. Please support St. Agnes by your participation. Wednesday, March 14th, St. Agnes and St. Kieran will celebrate their Lenten Reconciliation service. The Lenten reconciliation service will be held at St. Agnes. Our Advent service was held at St. Kieran before the renovation began and now we gather together as a community at St. Agnes to celebrate God’s love and mercy. The service begins at 7:00 PM. If you can not join us for the service but would like to celebrate the sacrament of Reconcilia- tion, both St. Agnes and St. Kieran offer Reconciliation on Saturdays from 4-4:30 PM. Finally, next weekend we will have our Women’s Welcome Retreat. A number of women from St. Kieran and St. Agnes have worked very hard to prepare themselves for this retreat. And in these last days before the experience begins they have worked to make sure it will be a worthwhile experience for those women who have chosen to join them on the weekend. I have seen them grow spiritually and together as they and Fr. Tom met over the last six months. Please keep in your prayers those who are offering this experience and those who have chosen to participate. We know the Holy Spirit will be with them. T oday we celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent. In our First reading from the Book of Exodus we are given the commandments that were entrusted to Moses. These commandments or guides tell us how to act with God and with each other.

Why do you go to Mass on Sunday?

Seems like a pretty straight forward kind of question. But do you have an answer that motivates you to keep coming week after week? I would invite you to consider your role in one of the central ides of our Catholic faith – the sacramental real presence of Jesus with us. Jesus became what we are so that in the best of what we are we can meet and relate to God and even be the face of God for others. Being baptized enters you into the Divine Mystery of experiencing yourself as the Body of Christ reaching out to love the world today. It is who God trusts you to be. In big ways and in little ones, either we make flesh and blood the love of God for others or we do not. Our Sunday prayer ritual begins with your choice to be the Body of Christ for others. Coming to the assembly of people that make up the Church says “I care enough about you to make the time to pray for you in your need and remind you that you are not alone.” Whether you might 'feel like it' on a particular day or not, in your conscious choice and commitment to be there, the Body of Christ becomes present. In our strength, we make real the love and compassion of God for others – and Jesus is present among us. When you are strong, you give of yourself; but even when you are weak and in need Jesus is present as divine love extended to you through the prayers of others. Giving and receiving is our ritual action of Communion. The minister's statement “The Body of Christ” applies not just to the substance of the Bread, but to you. Say your “Amen” consciously and with faith. You are Christ's Body. When the cup of the Blood of Christ is offered to you, see it as an expression of your faith that even in the weakness and the Good Fridays of your life, you accept God's love with you still. As an adult Catholic, knowing who you are and why you do what you do, makes you the best of teachers of the faith for those who might be searching in their own lives for something to believe in. Be that for someone this Lent. Fr. Tom K.
