Notes from Fr. John T oday we celebrate the Sixth Sunday of Easter. In the Acts of the Apostles we see how the faith is spreading. This is an active and living faith. The apostles baptize and call down the Holy Spirit and the people believe. We often see the Catholic Faith as intuitional, but really it is a faith that is living and spread one person to the next. We often see how illness can spread in a school, or city or even country. In most cases, it is person to person, immediate contact. It is the same with faith. We can study the faith, read about the faith, but it is the encounter with another faith filled person who can change us. God calls on us to live our faith and spread it through our words and actions. This coming Thursday we will be having a gathering to discuss immigration and the Gospel. As a country immigration has become a hot topic. Our faith offers insight and challenges to us as we look at immigration and national policies concerning immigrants and refugees. Who are they? How have immigrants hurt or enhanced our country? Where did our own families come from? And what stories did our own grandparents tell us? Please join us for this important dialogue. This meeting will be held at St. Agnes and will be in room 21. There will be greeters at the door to welcome you. The evening is being sponsored by St. Kieran, St. Agnes and St. Irenaeus. Don’t forget to put the St. Agnes parish picnic/ fest in your personal calendar. Sunday, June 11th, the picnic/fest will be held at Veterans Memorial Park and Skyline Pool. There will be music, food and drinks for sale, and games. There are lots of pavilions and picnic tables, so bring your family and friends. If the weather is good we also have access to the pool for just $5.00. The picnic starts at noon and runs to 7:00 PM. St. Agnes is once again having their Skys-the- Limit raffle. We will pick our Skys-the-Limit raffle winners at 6:00 PM at the picnic. Tickets are $50 apiece and there are three prizes at $5,000, $1,000 and $500. If you would like a ticket please let Fr. John or Fr. Tom know and we will make sure you get one. Thanks to everyone who have already purchased tickets. Tickets can also be obtained by calling Kay in the St. Agnes parish office at 708-709- 2694. Thanks once again to everyone who made the St. Kieran Pasta dinner a success. This week the order for new hand bells was placed and we look forward to soon having bells in our liturgies. Joanne has done a great job in expanding our choir and this is just the next step. Thanks to all our choir members and everyone who has made this purchase a possibility. “GOSPEL WITHOUT BORDERS”

Thursday, May 25, 2017 6:30 to 8:00 PM

St. Agnes Church Chicago Heights, IL

On Thursday evening, May 25th, a special Social Justice program sponsored by the Parishes of St. Agnes, St. Irenaeus and St. Kieran, “Gospel Without Borders,” will be presented at St. Agnes Church. A 30-minute video presentation will bring to us a better understanding to the issue of immigration. It separates the myth from facts, examines what the Bible says about treatment of the “stranger,” shows the experiences of un-documented immigrants, and provides help for Christians to advance the common good. This documentary highlights stories and is led by Bishops and Ministers of these five states: Arizona, Arkansas, North Carolina, Alabama and Iowa. Some stories break the heart. Others inspire the Spirit! Still others challenge the mind. But all come together and show that the Christian Gospel is indeed without borders. Following the presentation, Ms. Adeline Torres, Director for the Office of Hispanic Ministries for the Diocese of Gary, IN will serve as the facilitator. Time will be given for sharing and discussion. All are welcome and encouraged to attend!

Baby Shower to Benefit the Women’s Center

During the month of May we remember our mothers and, in particular, our Blessed Mother who is honored at this time of year. To highlight and honor motherhood, the Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Baby Shower to benefit the mothers served by the Women’s Center. This Catholic-based support center helps mothers who have decided to give birth to their infants instead of opting for abortion. When mothers make this decision, the Women’s Center supplies anything needed to nurture their families.

The Baby Shower will take place all weekends in May. Articles may be left on the designated table for these donations that is in the church vestibule. You may, if you wish, pledge your donation in honor or in memory of a loved one by using the form below. Return the completed form with your donation and they will be placed in a basket to be brought forward in prayer during the Knights of Columbus Rosary Rally after the 10 AM on the last Sunday of the month, May 28. The names will also appear in our bulletin sometime during the first part of June.

Articles needed for the Baby Shower are listed below. The Women’s Center is requesting that clothing be limited to anything between zero and 18 months. The Women’s Center is located at 5116 North Cicero Avenue, Chicago IL 60630; they can be contacted at their office phone of (773) 794-1313 and email at [email protected] at any time. Thanks for your generosity in being a part of this event.
