Organization of Periodic Table
Organization
● The periodic table is organized two ways, by period and by family
● Period = Going across in rows● Family = up and down in a column
Family
Period
Period & Family Organization
● Periods are organized according to atomic number
● Families are organized according to similar properties
Alkali family
● On far left of periodic table
● Reacts with chloride in 1:1 ratio and oxygen in 2:1 ratio
● Example: LiCl and Li2O
Noble Gas Family
● Located on far right of periodic table
● Consists of gases which are very unlikely to react with other elements
Halogen Family
● Located just to left of noble gases● Contains chlorine, bromine, and
fluorine● Easily forms anions in ionic
compounds
Predicting Properties
● We can predict physical and chemical properties using periodic table
● Use page 124 to do page 126 in book
Page 126 Answers1. Between -186 and -112, around -1492. a. 320K
b. Higher, melting point decrease with family from top to bottom3. (EkaSi)Cl4
4. a. CF4 b. Al2S3 c. KCl d. CaBr2 e. SrO
How are properties determined?
● # protons determines identity and essential properties
● # and arrangement of electrons determines chemical properties
● Reactions between atoms determine some physical properties (mostly for metals)
● Intermolecular forces determine some physical and chemical properties of compounds
