A Note to Parents & Teachers

How to Use the Editable Pages

These spelling activities and games are not intended to replace your current spelling curriculum, but they serve as a great supplement to what you are already doing. In this book are games and activities for individual use, student pairs, small groups, or whole group. Be sure to look on each activity’s description for the number of students it is intended for. If you’re working with your child at home, some of these games are fun to play with your child!

I have compiled phonics lists and sight word lists for your convenience, but note that you can use your own spelling words as many of the pages are editable (read below)!

Some of the pages included in this book are editable, making it easier for you to change the words to meet your students’ needs!

In order to edit a page and add your own words, open the document in Adobe Reader. Be sure you are using the most updated version.

Embedded into the document are blue boxes. Click inside each blue box to type your own words. The words will be in Century Gothic font and they will automatically change size to fit the space. The text boxes that you do not type in will print out blank. Print them out or save the document.

To change the words, just click in the blue box again and re-type a new word.

If you’d prefer to write the words yourself, instead of typing them, just print the page out. (Don’t worry. The little blue boxes will not print out.) Write your words on the cards and cut them out for your student(s).

Phonics and Sight Word Activities

There are typically two kinds of words when it comes to spelling1. Phonics words, words that share a common spelling feature, such as the short a in cat, map, &

lad; and2. Sight Words, which are common words that students see frequently in their reading and need

for spelling. Just a note: “sight words” and “high frequency words” are terms that are used interchangeably throughout these activities, although they are actually different things.

The activities in these pages includes both phonics and sight word activities. The directions to each activity will indicate with an image (see below) as to what kind(s) of words work best with that particular activity.
