Are you eligible for widening participation schemes?

Universities and colleges are keen to identify the full potential of students and use certain criteria to help look beyond the grades. Each university and college will have its own policy so it is important for you to check the websites of those institutions you are applying to. We also have dedicated staff who provide the Believe & Achieve programme in college and they aim to assist all those who can benefit from these schemes, programmes and opportunities. Some examples of students who may be eligible include those who: Live in a target postcode area. For example, in a low participation area Attend a target school or college where attainment is typically below average Have experience of being in care Are estranged from their family Have refugee status, or are an asylum seeker Are responsible for the unpaid care and wellbeing of a dependant (relative, friend) Have parents who serve in the armed forces Have received free school meals at any time during their school life

So, where do you look for these schemes? The Believe & Achieve page on Moodle is a good place to start and has links to various universities and organisations. University and college websites The Sutton Trust UK Social Mobility Foundation The Careers Department also offer many lunchtime talks from universities and organisations that specialise in widening participation; keep looking out for notices and emails about these.

So, why should I be part of these schemes? You will be given tailored support for your UCAS application, opportunities to experience university life before you apply, access to mentors, and much more. The main attraction is that it could lead to a guaranteed interview if your course requires it and a condition offer with a 1 –2 grade reduction

Our Dentistry MaD Day will take place virtually this year but students will still get to

take part in a practical session led by one of our Clinical Lecturers from the School of Dental Sciences, meet current Dentistry students and receive a talk on the admission process to study Dentistry at university. Further information and booking can be found here. Students interested in studying a medical sciences subject at university may also be interested in our Mini Medical School. Explore the exciting world of Medical Sciences by joining us for a series of interactive lectures, delivered by expert clinicians and academics. Our Mini-Medical School runs every autumn and is open to anyone aged 15 and over. The programme offers the public the chance to find out about exciting topics. This includes current research developments at the University. Evening lectures will run on Thursdays 6-7pm, on 4,11, 18, 25 November and 2 December (students must sign up to attend the series of lectures). The Mini Medical School will be delivered virtually online via Zoom.
