YOU WALkINg TO THE pLAcE WHERE YOU cOULDN’T UNDERSTAND ANYTHINg

People eat things that they can indicate the ingredients. I want to do the opposite way. I will go to the place called “ethnic market” where all the customers have different ethnicities from me. Some of the places the cashiers can barely understand english. During the progress I found that San Francisco has a lot of ethnic markets and some of them has really interesting characteristic. Eating is one of the most common hab-its of human being. Walking through the ethnic markets give me feeling that I have never aware of living in this meating pot. Now, Ethnic markets are just not the market for the foreigners, for me it has all the cultures that I never absorb.

Nothing interesting in this aisle i can guess by seeing the pictures on the package

I’m LOOkINg fOR SOmETHINg THAT I cAN’T IDENTIfY THE INgREDIENTS.

Maybe I’m in the right place. In the middle of something similar to chips but not really. They come in the clear package with the individual wrapper, all brown, all in Japa-nese. Some of them have picture of ingredients but i have no idea what are those. It might be some sort of seaweed or some seasoning. Now my question is why all these are so different with the aisle that I just walked pass. In that aisle there are some English words for example, chocolate, cream, pie, cookie, biscult (well, the Asian biscult is same as the crispy wafer that American called cracker)

Now I need to pick something. Which one should I pick? Well, I’m not going to spend my money for the things that i couldn’t eat or taste horrible. I need to pick something taste good or at least not the worst.

RIcE cRAckER (TOkIMInO ShIGOTOba kOROMaME MOchI)

I don’t have particular reason to choose this snack. I just thing i buy it because it was discount. but after I see my picture it was only .50 cent cheaper than normal price. I was fool by those colorful price tag.

I have never tried rice cracker before, so i couldn’t compare the taste. After first bite i think this is similar to pita chips but not really the texture is different. It was light and salty and crispy. it might taste better with green tea but at that time I didn’t have one so I can’t tell you the result.

I paid $3.48 for ten pieces of this. not too much but I can pay the same price and get a big bag of Kettle chips sea salt and pepper. Oh, this kind of snack might be healthier because it isn’t greasy as Kettle chips.

IN THE pERSpEcTIvE Of AN ASIAN gIRL, THESE RUSSIAN pAckAgES LOOk REALLY INTERESTINg

I’m originally from somewhere in Asian and i’m kind of familiar with Asian graphic style. Of course I’ve never been to Russia. The only think I know that is from Russia is Cheburashka the Russian cartoon. I was wandering around the market and I wasn’t sure what to get. Because the market have too many interesting things and i don’t want to take too many. After i got home and unwrapped all things i got, i found that most of the things are chocolate. I have no idea how to differentiate all the things when I couldn’t understand the language.

AHENA(RuSSIan cOOkIE)

I wasn’t sure if this cookie or not. It might be something else because the whole label is all in Russian. My first curiosity is “Is this gigantic cookie is the snack for kids?” I’ve seen some of the kids snack and the cookie usually come in the small piece not this 4.5” by 3” size.

The cookie isn’t tasty as I expect. It smelled pretty milky but it wasn’t tasted creamy. I don’t know it lacks some sort of sweet or creamy and the cookie isn’t crispy as normal cookie. All I described above I can understand that because I only paid $1.45 for 8 gigantic pieces of cookies but I didn’t mean that cheap snack have to be bad all the time.

I unwrapped all the misc. items and I found myself got all chocolate except those two candies. I like chocolate especially Asian chocolate. Everybody loves chocolate but wait, I’m going to give the reason why you wouldn’t like this Russian chocolate. My first attempt of Rus-sian chocolate started with the one that have buffalo on the wrapper. It is Liquor-Filled Chocolate and the filling part was really disgusting. That filling tasted like rotten Nyquil and the smell is pretty gross. ugh.

Others chocolate are all lack of the creamyness and the tasted of cocoa. I have tried numbers of good choco-late in here and bad when I was in Thailand. I would say Russian chocolate is the worse. The good thing is they have really interesting wrappers that drawn me to buy. I like the yellow one the most not for the peanut plus mint and that fake cocoa part but I mean the visual.

YEOT DOO gA TAffY(kOREan candIES)

This is not my first time trying Korean candy. I always get Korean chewing gum, when I go to Korean restaurants. I call it as a five sec chewing gum. The sweetness of the gum will be gone after chewing in 5 seconds. After that it will transform to a hard object. It gives me a taste of how chewing rubber will be like.

Well, That wasn’t really good experience. let’s back to the candy I got. The only english on the package is Yeot doo ga taffy. I unwrapped and see what’s inside. It has organic shape. But wait, I unwrapped the other one and found it has different shape. Now I assumed all those candied somehow melt. The candy tasted like caramel, rice and ginger. It was spicy, sweet and creamy. I’m not a big fan of ginger but this amount of ginger can add more of the hidden tasted to the candy.
