    ANTIQUES NEWSLETTER

JUNE 2013 VOL. THREE ISSUE 6

    FOR THE LOVE OF ANTIQUES

Ever wonder why some people love vintage items and others do not? Why some of us

classify items as old and outdated and the rest of us have realized our tastes evolve otime to include a love for antiquities? Ive pondered these questions and have come to

conclusion that will, at least, partially answer them.

Each of us has an A-ha momentan epiphany of sorts when an individual realizes thetrue value of something passed from one generation to the next. I believe the defining

moment happens like this: Were quietly strolling along while window shopping andsomething familiar catches our eye. Were inquisitive and take a step closer to see if wactually looking at the same vase that sat on Aunt Ediths hall table for 40 years. Whate

happened to that vase? Could it be? Thus, the appreciation for antiques begins.

Heres another scenario. Do you remember the salt and pepper shakers that sat ongrandmas kitchen table? I doa silly little ceramic monkey holding a pineapple in onearm and a bunch of bananas in the other. When antiquing, I am always looking for that

silly little monkey. Perhaps one day, Ill find him.

In the end, were all human; we associate things with experiences. Hence the love for aitem that reminds us of some of our favorite memories. Whatever your reason for lovi

those old and outdated things, let us share a memory or two with you at Norwood

Nostalgia. We hope to see you soon!

Caring for your cast iron pans takes a bit of getting

used to, but it is well worth the effort. Theres quite

a checklist for this one, so lets get started.

HAND WASH ONLY! Wash immediatelyafter use with HOT water. The jury is out on

whether to use dish soap or not. Some do,

some dont. Use your best judgment.

Dry each piece with a paper towel and let itsit in the open to be sure no moisture

remains. Then place over a low flame (for a

minute or two) to complete the drying

    process.

Do not scrub vigorously. Do not submerge in water. Do not store with the lid on. Do not put cold water in a hot pan. Do not store prepared food in a cast iron

    pan.

Finally, treat the pan with vegetable oil at least once

a week to ensure it retains its durability and that it

wont dry out. Treat your cast iron with care and itwill literally last a lifetime. At Norwood and Nostalgia we offer candles to

enhance the beauty and ambiance of your

home. We love them and we know you do too.We thought wed share with you a few candlesafety tips to help keep you safe and sound.

Use candleholders that are study andwont tip over.

Blow out all of the candles whenleaving a room.

Keep candles at least 12 inches fromeverything else when lit.

Dont burn a candle all the way down. Never use a candle in the presence of

    compressed oxygen.

We hope these tips are helpful. Cheers for

    now!

When we think of cast iron we automatically think of the heavy skillet mom

used every day. She baked in it, cooked with it and even placed it over thecoals at the campfire to prepare a hearty outdoor meal. It was a staple in

    every kitchen.

Cast iron has lost some popularity in recent decades, but seems to be maki

quite a comeback lately. Cast iron is reliable and, if cared for properly, williterally last a lifetime or longer. For this reason, these items were coveted

many and were actually placed in some folks last will and testament. Tod

this isnt the case but many collectors search high and low for an interestin

    piece.

There are several prestigious names associated with cast iron cookware.Wagner, Lodge, Favorite and Vollrath all produced a quality product, but t

king of cast iron stands tall against the rest. The Griswold foundry began

producing their cast iron wares in 1865, nearly a decade before any other

company. Their quality products have stood the test of time and are now

easily the favorite of todays cast iron collectors. Griswold ceased productin 1957. Imitations still flood the marketplace, so it pays to know your cas

iron! An educated buyer will not be parted from his hard-earned money.

Norwood and Nostalgia always have a broad selection of cat iron pieces. Sby soon to check out what we have. Happy collecting!
