editor’s note

As the end of summer comes too soon, we also mark the beginning of so many things. It is now that we shake the dust off our backpacks and prepare for another school year, celebrate family reunions, and plot our last summer escape into the wild woods. For those of us over here at Northwest Kids Magazine, we begin the exciting adventure of launching a new publication! Late in 2010, my sister-in-law Laura and I, set out to bring our community its first full size, glossy, pet magazine, Northwest Pet Magazine, and eight months later we embark on yet another journey. This time though, we are reaching out to parents of 2-legged kids! We’ve packed our publication with useful editorial for you and your family and glammed it up with gorgeous imagery. Our

region is beautiful beyond belief, our families engaging and diverse and we wanted to create a magazine that would reflect just that.

We all know that with great challenges comes the opportunity for great accomplishments and we intend to reach for the stars in our endeavor. It is our goal to become your go-to source for parenting related information and connect you with professionals, events, philanthropy and products that will enhance your Northwest experience.

Because we’ve dedicated our publication to bringing you hyper-local information, we start each issue by highlighting one of our amazing local parks or recreation areas and kicked off our premiere issue with the lesser known beach getaway in Kootenai County, Honeysuckle Beach (p.8). Keeping things local means accentuating local events and making our residents aware of all the awesome things happening right here in our own backyard…be sure to check out our Activity Guide (p.9) in each issue so you don’t miss a thing! Providing not only educational information but fun features as well, we’ve included a section dedicated to making all of our local kids famous in our Famous Faces (p.10) section…submit your child’s photo for the upcoming September issue and be entered to win a Family 4-pack to Laser Quest in our photo drawing. Our Lives (p.26) focuses on you and the needs and interests that matter to you, not just as parents, but also as couples and individuals. Check out Money Matters (p.28), where we discuss a new cost saving strategy each month (this month we discuss ways to save on back to school shopping…who couldn’t use a little savings?!?)

As we take our first step into this exciting adventure and set out to provide you with the most relevant information, we would love to hear from you. Visit our website at www.NorthwestKidsMagazine.com to submit Activity Guide events (big or small), upload your photos for our Famous Faces section, or just to let us know what you think. Thanks for picking up our premiere issue…we look forward to growing with you!

The beginning of a new school year can be a stressful time for children, with new teachers and classmates, bigger classrooms, new routines and more schoolwork. This time can be particularly unnerving and overwhelming for children who are facing major transitions such as starting elementary school or entering middle school. As a parent there are proactive steps you can take to support your child as he or she heads back to school.

* Express interest and enthusiasm about the start of the school year. If you are confident and excited, your child will be too.

* If you have visited your child’s school already, you are one step ahead of the game. If not, take a walk around the school with your child and locate his or her classrooms, lunchroom, playground and rest rooms. This will help keep your child from feeling lost on the first day.

* Take time to listen to your child and discuss aspects of the new school year that he or she is worried about. Remember to let your child know that it’s normal to feel nervous about the start of school. For parents of younger children, suggest that your child take a family photo or special object to school to make his or her surroundings more comfortable.

* Spend time each day talking to your child about what happened in school. Give your child positive feedback about his or her new experiences.

Anxiety and stress about starting school is normal for a child and usually passes within the first few days or weeks. If your child continues to seem anxious or stressed, it may be time to seek help.

* Praise and encourage your child to become involved with school activities and try new things.

* Attend school functions and stay involved in your child’s education. Children whose parents are more involved with their education have higher achievement, are better adjusted and are less likely to drop out of school.

* Make a point to learn about how your child develops not just physically, but socially and emotionally, as well. If you are aware of what’s typical behavior and thoughts for your child’s stage of life, you will be able to tell more readily when things may not be right.

If you have specific questions call your local school district and they clarify vaccines required. It is a tremendous help if these immunizations are up to date at the time of registration.

KINDERGARTEN VACCINATIONSfor Washington & Idaho:

HEALTH our kids •

Getting ready for kindergarten...to vaccinate or not to vaccinate... that is the question.

On May 10, 2011, Governor Gregoire signed a bill that requires a licensed health care provider to sign the Certificate of Exemption for a parent or guardian to exempt their child from school and child care immunization requirements. The signature verifies that the provider gave the parent or guardian information about the risks and benefits of immunization. A parent or guardian can also turn in a signed letter from a health care provider stating the same information.

The law goes into effect on July 22, 2011. It only applies to exemptions requested after this date. A health care provider doesn’t need to sign the form for parents or guardians who demonstrate membership in a church or religious group that does not allow a health care provider to provide medical treatment to a child. In Idaho, a parent or legal guardian can complete the exemption certification for any reason they so choose.

STAYING FITour kids•

No parent wants their child to bear too much weight on their shoulders, but your child might leave for school every morning carrying just that — a heavy, uncomfortable backpack. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that a child not carry more than 10 to 20 percent of his body weight on his back daily. And backpack woes can extend beyond heft; lost items inside, ripped fabric, and broken zippers can all bring on the tears. But with a few simple adjustments, you can make your child’s backpack more comfortable.

How to Adjust Your Child’s Backpack

You know that fit is everything when it comes to clothing, and the same is true for backpacks. Before your kid heads off to school, try these expert tips from the Good Housekeeping Research Institute:

• Tighten shoulder straps so the weight of the pack rests on the lower back.

• Clip sternum and waist straps together — they help to distribute the backpack’s weight so shoulders are less burdened.

• Ask the school if extra copies of heavy textbooks are available to keep at home for homework, so your child doesn’t have to lug them home each night. If your child leans forward while carrying his backpack, it’s too heavy.

How to Buy the Best Backpack

• Have your child try on the backpack in the store. If the pack can’t be adjusted to rest on the lower back, it’s the wrong size and won’t be comfortable.

• Check for curved, padded shoulder straps and waist and sternum straps.

• Open up the bag and make sure your child can see inside and find things easily.

• Look for packs made of hardy materials like ballistic and ripstop nylon. A backpack tends to have a hard-knock life of being unceremo-niously plopped, kicked, and thrown, and weaker materials don’t stand a chance.

preparing your child for...

PreschoolPreparing your child for preschool is very important when creating a successful school foundation. This is your child’s first experience in a school setting and it can be very intimidating. Remember how it feels, as an adult, to start a new job. You have to learn your job duties, meet new coworkers, get acquainted with your new environment, etc. What we go through as adults is easier than what our new preschooler will go through because of the skills we’ve developed to cope with adjustment. For a child, these skills are not developed yet and therefore school can be a very intimidating and scary notion for a child to imagine. Below are some good ways to help make this transition a little easier.

• Speak positively about school to help alleviate any anxiety the child may have.

• Take your child to the preschool before officially starting so he or she can meet their teacher and get acquainted with the environment.

• Have your child be a part of shopping for school supplies. It will get them excited for

school.

• Take your child to school and pick them up at the same time every day to create a consistent schedule they can rely on.

• Develop special rituals that you do each day which will make dropping off easier. For example, you can say, “When we get to school mommy is going to give you 2 hugs and 2 kisses and then mommy is going to leave and will come back later.” Then, when you pick your child up say, “See, I told you I was going to come back and it looks like you had a fantastic day!”

• Don’t linger around when you are dropping off. This will

cause more anxiety to build up in your child. It is best to give

2 kisses and 2 hugs and leave. Parents need to have confidence

when dropping off. If a child sees his mom or dad sad about dropping off

then the child will in turn be sad as well.

• Have your child take a family photo to school to leave in

their cubby so if they feel sad they can look at it.

Relationship Problems: Fighting Fatigue

You were up three times last night nursing your baby and/or comforting your toddler. It’s not surprising that you’re just a little bit on edge. Fatigue has a tendency to bring out the cranky in all of us! But chronic fatigue can also cause relationship problems—especially when you’re so tired, you and your husband keep snapping at each other.

Here is some relationship advice on how to cope with fatigue in a relationship:

* Don’t bring up any sensitive or hot-button relationship questions when you’re tired! No good will come of it. Wait until you’ve gotten some rest—even if you don’t know when that will be! * Give each other a break. Take turns waking up in the middle of the night so at least one of you can get some rest and you’re not both stressed out and exhausted! * Hire a baby-sitter or get friends or family members to watch the kids so you have some time to catch up on sleep—and maybe even spend some quality time together. * We know there’s a lot to be done around the house, but put housework aside and sleep when the baby sleeps or your toddler naps. * You may think you’re too tired to exercise, but, in fact, exercise helps to give you more energy. Even if you can’t get out of the house, you can always crank up the stereo and have an impromptu dance party. It will help relieve stress too! * Try to keep perspective. Soon enough, your kids will be sleeping through the night—and so will you! Meanwhile, try to maintain a bond with your husband so you don’t lose touch with each other during this sleep-deprived stretch.

MONEY MATTERSour lives•

SUNNY

BRANDY

JAZZ

One of the things often neglected in the family budget is back to school shopping and when you go shopping without a plan you are more likely to buy on impulse, buy things that are too expensive, and buy things that you really don’t need. Avoid this mistake with just a little bit of planning and research. Before you buy even one pencil or go to one single store, check out these simple steps to make the experience easier on both your nerves and your wallet.

1. Make a list Save money and time by creating a game plan. To start, take an inventory of your child’s closet and evaluate what already fits. From there, determine the new items you’ll need to buy for the school year. Do the same for school supplies. TIP: Great sales for backpacks resurface in September after school has started so see if last year’s can make it just a few more months and then scoop up the savings.

2. Window shop A week before you head out, ask your kids to do some “window shopping” by visiting the web sites of their favorite stores. Visit comparison shopping sites to search for the best prices. Also, check for sales in the fliers in Sunday’s paper or on your favorite shopping blogs. TIP: Instead of braving the mall on a Saturday, select two weeknights to go shopping after dinner. You’ll face smaller crowds and be forced to get the job done before the mall closes.

3. Shop for essentials first Kids can be fickle; a few weeks into the school year, when peer pressure kicks in, they’re bound to come home with a list of must-haves. So buy just the essentials at the beginning of the season rather than everything at once; remember, there’s always going to be another sale.Insist that your kids leave the tags on their clothes until they’re about to wear them and make sure you hold on to receipts so you can easily return anything they have second thoughts about. Create a file that includes catalogs, sizes and wish lists so you can act if you find a sale while on your own.

4. Get trendy for less You don’t have to hit pricey department stores to get the best look for your child. High-end designers have great discount lines at stores like Target and K-Mart. You can also get designer labels for less by digging through the racks at consignment stores.

5. Pre-shop and save Instead of heading straight to the mall, check consignment shops first. Unlike thrift stores that take whatever they can get, consignment shops are selective, and some of them cater exclusively to kids and teens. Have your kids weed through their closets before they shop so they can turn in their old clothes for cash to go toward new purchases. You can also set up a swap network with a group of friends: Before everyone goes shopping, gather at a pal’s house to trade your kids’ outgrown clothes.

6. Save your receipt If you buy an item and discover it goes on sale shortly after you’ve purchased it, many stores will grant you a price adjustment. Simply show your receipt and the store will refund you the difference.

WELLNESS our lives •

Okay, so you’ve gotten yourself, your husband, your children, the dog and the cat out of bed and ready for their day. You’ve managed to assemble yourself in some presentable fashion and headed off for your own day of what’s bound to be nonstop activity. But suddenly you realize that you are drained of energy and the day has technically just begun…whew, what is a gal to do? Here is an option…take a time out! Studies show that women who schedule “down time” are less likely to carry yesterday’s stress into today, more likely to live longer, and more capable of maintaining a positive outlook over those that are always putting others needs in front of their own. Just because we have children, our own needs aren’t suddenly going to evaporate simply because we insist that they do.

Years ago I was introduced to the practice of yoga and while I don’t go as often as I’d like however I am always surprised at the end of a class just how profoundly it affects my mood. The art of stretching combined with slow, deliberate breathing is the foundation of yoga. Who couldn’t use a little stretching and slow breathing? We aren’t suggesting that you become a fanatic of yoga, so dedicated to the art that you drop out of society and go to live in an ashram in India. Rather, simply approach yoga as a part-time hobby. You don’t need to rush out and buy fancy gear and swanky outfits to accentuate your new hobby…simply show up and get relaxing!
