Dementia is a generic term for a mental state generally defined by a significant reduction in one’s ability to learn new information. While many con-ditions such as stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, infections, brain injuries, toxicities, and other conditions can inter-fere with memory and contribute to the development of a dementia syndrome, Alzheimer’s Disease, due in part to its prevalence in our society, continues to cast the largest shadow of the Dementias. Dementia seems to be more common these days and several factors such as a longer life span, the common occurrence of chronic medical condi-tions that contribute to the development of dementia, and more rigorous testing focused on diagnosing memory problems all play a role in our societies more frequent dementia-related dialogue. Alzheimer’s Disease, along with many types of dementia, will worsen over time progressively robbing an affected individual of basic mental and physical functions. However, dementia can be equally devastating both mentally and physically to care partners who attempt to compensate for the failing func-tioning of their loved one. General health, severity of potential dementia-related behavioral problems, quality and quantity of family and professional support systems all serve as modulators in a care partners health and play a significant role in determining how destructive forces such as sleep deprivation, exhaustion, frustration, depression and failing health ultimately shape the decision-making landscape in dementia care. When sufficient mental and physical erosion occur, the care support system deteriorates thus heralding in the often dreaded discus-sion of long-term placement of a loved one. While the contributing factors for the development of Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias are complex and still incompletely understood, the goals of Dementia Care Systems should be straightforward: diagnose as early and accurately as possible so that potentially reversible causes of dementia can be corrected and non-reversible, progressive dementias can be confronted thus allowing for the power of simple understanding and family planning to more firmly take hold and manage future care in a more personal manner. Dr. Gary Linker, a distinguished staff of experienced professional care partners, and Texarkana Behavioral Health are excited to announce the December opening of the regions only exclusive Dementia Care System on the Vista Health campus in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Our goals are to offer public and professional education while working alongside affected families, their present care partners and systems to deter the presentation of potentially devastating behaviors that force premature hospitalization and long-term placement; and, at that desperate moment when some sufferers of Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias take a dangerous behavioral and functional turn for the worse, to offer in hospital diagnostic, prognostic and rehabilitation services to individuals, their loved ones, and care partners who are struggling to better understand and man-age one of societies most dehumanizing conditions—Dementia.

Circle of Life Hospice. The rest of your life. Lived.

Hospice care is recommended when a person is terminally ill with a life expectancy of six months or less. However, each case is unique. Some patients are on hospice care for a few days or weeks, while many are on hospice care for several months or even years.

We believe when patients choose hospice care earlier, they expe-rience a better quality of life. We believe that life doesn’t stop in the last weeks, days or even hours.

We focus on pain and symptom management and on emotional and spiritual support. And we strive to help you have a better quality of life and more time with loved ones. With Circle of Life you decide what kind of care is right for you.

Circle of Life is committed to help you get the most out of every moment.

Life doesn’t stop in the last months, weeks or even days. And Until that last second, I can face death without turning my back on life. With pain and symptom management. With emotional and spiritual support. With Circle of Life Hospice. I can get the most out of my life as I near the end of it. This is why I am hospice.

Q: If you or a senior loved one has suffered a myocardial in-farction or heart attack, what step can you take to decrease the risk of another heart attack?

It is very important to make and keep follow-up doctors’ appointments and test; take medications as directed and eat a healthy diet. In addition to these and other things, The US National Library of Medicine suggests to prevent another heart attack, a senior needs to do the following:

• Keep blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol under control• Don’t smoke• Eat a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in animal fat• Regular, moderate exercise, at least 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week, consult with your doctor regarding the right exercise plan for you. • Get checked and treated for depression• Limit alcohol intake to no more than one drink a day for women, and no more than two drinks a day for men• Stay at a healthy weight

Following these recommendations are vital to maintaining a senior’s good health. As a caregiver you can help, but there are also many organizations that provide outside assistance. Be sure to discuss all of your options for care and support with the senior’s physicians.

Q: I have severe osteoarthritis in both knees. Can laser acupuncture help my pain?

A: Yes! Laser acupuncture has not needles. The cold laser stimulates the cells that repair tissue, reduce inflammation and reduce pain. The laser light reduces swelling leading to decreased pain, less stiffness and faster return to normal joint function. It is painless, affordable and usually takes less than 30 minutes per treatment. The average client typically requires a total of 6-10 laser treatments with most clients repoting signifi-cant pain reduction by the third treatment. Acupuncture helps balance the flow of energy in the body. Laser acupuncture can dramatically reduce the swelling and pain caused by arthritis in the knees, hips, and shoulders. It is also effective in treating headaches, allergies and Fibromyalgia. For more information contact a local chiropractor or acupuncturist specializing in laser acupuncture. Testimony: I have personally had a total of 8 laser treat-ments on my arthritic knees. It is amazing! My swelling and pain is 90% reduced! - Lori Brown Owner, Good Shepherd In-Home Senior Care

BUILDING BETTER BRAINS FOR SENIORS

We’re all afraid of losing ours, our minds that is . Well, the good news is that you can stay sharp as you age, even get sharper . This has been proven by brain research that established the idea of neuroplasticity of the brain . Yes, you can change your brain . It’s not fixed at birth as was previously thought . As we age, we can stay sharp if we continue to ‘exer-cise’ our brains . We know that exercise is good for our bodies and becomes increasingly important as we age . That’s also true for our minds—exer-cise is good for our brains, and both physical and mental exercise become increasingly important as we age . We know that a good diet is important for our bodies . It’s also true for our brains; we need good nutrition and to keep drinking fluids . Generally, what’s good for the body is good for the brain, whether it’s diet or physical exercise . Mental exercise is also important, and despite increased attention it’s often overlooked . If anything, we work Sudoku or crossword puzzles and think we’ve done enough . Actually, you need to exercise your brain every day with activities that are new and work all parts of the brain . Our brains are not fixed at birth, or by the time we go to school . You can change your brain, sharpen your skills even as you age . In fact, the most dramatic change in hundreds of years comes from research that shows the power of neuroplasticity of the human brain . To learn more come to Amazing Brain Day at the Rogers Public Library on March 9, 1:30-3:30 pm . 15 Years of Saving Lives

“I could have never gone to Fayetteville for treatment without Komen’s help. Truly this grant saved my life and without it I would not have been able to see the doctor and get my treatments.” ---Komen Grant Recipient

Ozark Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is celebrating 15 years of saving lives! Since 1998, the Ozark Affiliate has supported the mission of breast health by raising awareness and funds to support the PROMISE of saving lives and ending breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and ener-gizing science to find the cures.

Fact: ALL women are at risk of getting breast cancer, which is why it is so impor-tant for women to get screened. When breast cancer is found early and confined to the breast, the 5 year survival rate is 98%.

Since its inception, the Ozark Affiliate has awarded over $7 million dollars to local organizations and over $2 million to the Komen National’s Research and Awards program. This makes the Ozark Affiliate’s contribution to ending breast cancer for-ever to over $9 million!

“Without Komen funds, I could not have gone to Highlands Oncology every Friday for a year for treatment.” ---Komen Grant Recipient

The Ozark Affiliate serves 8 counties in Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley including; Benton, Boone, Carroll, Crawford, Madison, Newton, Sebastian and Washington and 2 counties in Missouri that includes Stone and Taney. We are com-mitted to comprehensive breast health for ALL women in our 10 county service area through local grants, partnerships, education and support.

“Every woman has a right to access breast cancer screening tools that may save her life. Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have a right to fight the disease without the fear of bankruptcy.” ---The Breast Cancer Bill of Rights

In 2012, the Ozark Affiliate awarded $750,000 to fourteen grantees to support local breast health programs provide education, screening and treatment services to those in greatest need. Grantee programs include; access to screening, treatment, genetic testing, emergency financial assistance, counseling, prescription assistance, gas cards, navigation assistance and many other services to those who are unin-sured or underinsured that might not have access to these life saving services oth-erwise.
