  • Steps togreatnessSpecialized ConceptStore offers a guide toeight milestones onthe path to masteringthe road bike.

    NS Cycling

Cycling is something most peopledo from a very young age, butthat doesnt mean that everyoneis a cyclist. For some the bike is simply aconvenient and cheap means oftransportation, but for the truly dedicated itbecomes part of who we are. For truecyclists there are some steps everyone seemsto go through on their journey; from clothingchoices, to ambitious expeditions, to socialactivities.

So here they are, the eight rites ofpassage (or should that be pedallage?) thatevery road cyclist will go through on theirpath to becoming a cycling machine.

Embrace the lycraSure, theres a hint of silliness that goesalong with wearing extremely tight-fittingclothes, but as the old saying goes, onceyou go Lycra, youll never go back. Thetransition from regular sports gear to Lycrais one of the earliest, but also mostrewarding milestones a cyclist will pass, iffor no other reason than the elimination ofchafing while in the saddle.

Get in the dropsIt might be scary at first, but theadvantages of riding on drop handlebars,AKA in the drops, are absolutely hugeonce you get the knack. A tight, aeroposition is essential to going fast on a bike so conquer the fear and get ready to fly!

Team upOnce youve built a bit of confidence onyour bike, you might feel the need to trainmore seriously. One of the easiest ways tostep it up a notch is joining a club. Theres

as any different types of club as there aretypes of rider so dont be put off by theclassic perception of clubs as fusty, traditionalists. There is a club for you!

Go full clipAfter mastering the drops the next, slightlyscarier step, is to attach your feet to thepedals by way of a pair of clip-in shoes. Ofcourse, to every newbie this sounds likemadness, but to any experienced rider theopposite seems totally crazy. You get such asuperior transfer of power that once youswitch, theres no turning back.

Become a centurionRiding 100 miles in a single ride issomething of a mythic achievement incycling. At the beginning it seems positivelyinconceivable, but if you take it one step ata time itll become a very real possibility.Once youve completed a 50-miler, itllsuddenly seem an easier task the next timeyou try. Likewise with every distance from60 miles until you hit the big 1-0-0. Andafter that? Well theres always the doublecenturion. Why not triple?

Take it overseasWhen youve been riding for a while youmay start to tire of your local roads thats when its time to plan a cyclingholiday to Europe! Vuelta aEspana, Giro dItalia, Paris-Roubaix regardless ofwhich continental bike raceis your favourite, Europe hashundreds of great ridingdestinations where you cangot to emulate the greatsand ride the same routes asthe pros.

Put on your race faceIts virtually impossible to be a cyclist for along time without getting a tiny bitcompetitive, so sooner or later youllprobably feel the need to enter a race. Youcan sign up with British Cycling for as littleas 22 and get access to their extensivelist of races with something happeningon most weekends throughout the springand summer.

Time to tourOnce youve mastered single day bikerides, its time to branch out into multi-dayexpeditions, or even multi-stage sportives. This could take the form of you enteringan organised ride like the NSPCCs Tour ofEngland, or tackling the Lands End to JohnOGroats in aid of your chosen charity.Either way its sure to be an epic test ofendurance thatll finally prove your statusas a cycling hero.

Where do you rank on the list of stepsto greatness? Are you planning to make theleap to the next level soon?

Ready fortake-offHave your say on Leeds Bradford Airports bright future.

    Leeds Bradford Airport has grand

plans for its future and they areasking for your views andcomments on how theyre goingto make it happen.

Until 30 April, the airports MasterplanRoad to 2030 a strategic developmentplan (SDP) for the next 15 years that outlinestheir ambitions for improving infrastructure, becoming even more appealing to short, medium and long-distance flyers andcementing its reputation as Yorkshiresgateway to the world will be available forpublic consultation in several locationsaround the region.

Tony Hallwood, Leeds Bradford aviationdevelopment director, explains: We aretouring libraries and other public locationsaround North and West Yorkshire andhosting various regional meetings to allowpeople to have their say. We are invitingfeedback from local residents because theyare our existing and future passengers andwed like to understand which facilities wouldencourage them to use Leeds Bradford

more often. We know people love to supporteverything Yorkshire, so were inviting themto help shape the airports future.

The Masterplan highlights how theairport might be developed up to 2030

including extensions to the terminal, improved surface transport access links, anairport hotel close to the terminal, a newcommercial hub including an airport village,an innovation park and freight park. Proposalsalso include additional apron parking, construction of new taxiways and additionalcar parking facilities.

One of the most important elements isthe improved transport links to the airport, which will increase its connectivity with itsclosest towns and cities, including Leeds,Harrogate and York. The plan is to build aparkway station about a mile from theairport that will double up as a park and ridefacility for those living in the region.

We really want to become the airportthats easier to access and new rail links androad improvements will allow us to do that, says Tony. Leeds Bradford would love to belinked more closely with the region and thelocal transport infrastructure, as well as beingintegrated with HS2 and HS3.

And, Tony adds, its not just the airportthat is set to benefit from these changes. Webelieve the Masterplan is not only about thegrowth and development of the airport itselfbut also delivering new jobs within closeproximity and providing new jobs across theYorkshire service industry as a whole.

If the SDP is implemented, the majoreconomic impact will be felt across acrossthe community. In addition to the workersrequired during the development, the newairlines and destinations that will beintroduced as a result of its growth willrequire extra staff. It is estimated that by2030 the airports GVA contribution to theLeeds City Region will reach 724million and10,000 jobs could be provided almostdouble the current figures.

Those interested in becoming part of theLeeds Bradford team wont have to waituntil 2030 to get involved. A number ofaspirations and ideas in the Masterplan havealready been approved, including the growthand development of passenger terminals, which are due to be implemented whenpassenger numbers reach a pre-determinedlevel.

In the meantime, for information on thedates and locations of the publicconsultations, and to find out where to directyour comments on the SDP, visitwww.leedsbradfordairport.co.uk/about-the-airport/airport-masterplan.

Summer is almost upon us and thereis no better time to up your workrate. Cycling is one of the bestlow-impact, easy-to-do and funforms of exercise out there, with arange of proven benefits that we all want.

The facts just a few of which are listedhere are impressive. In a recent study of150,000 people, those who cycled to workwere on average 5kg (11 pounds) lighter thanthose who drove. In terms of reduced risk ofdiabetes and other chronic disease, thatamount is what will tip most people frombeing overweight to normal weight.

A study carried out by the University ofBristol found that people who exercisedbefore work or at lunch time improved theirworkload management and output, hadincreased motivation and their ability to dealwith stress was improved.

According to the British Heart Foundation, around 10,000 fatal heart attacks could beavoided by moderate levels of exercise.Compared to those who take no exercise atall, cycling just 20 miles per week reduces therisk of heart disease to less than half.

Chevin Cycles have known all of these

benefits for some time and are fullysupportive and involved with promoting thegovernments Cycle to Work initiative. Therereally is no cheaper way of buying a bike asyou will typically save between 25 and 40 percent of the cost of a bike.

The process is easy, quick andstraightforward and there are no creditchecks. The hardest part is choosing whichbike! Chevin Cycles have provided thousandsof bikes on the scheme and many of theirCycle to Work customers return year afteryear for a new bike. Floral trends are in fullbloom this season saysLucy Pitt, buyer forMorgan Clare.

    NS Fashion

Having just returned from London Fashion week, Parisand Milan and all the inspiring AW16 collections it isgood to get back to focussing on the season we arein. With spring sunshine (even if not every day) andthe promise of summer, the mood is perfect for thefabulous prints and colours featured throughout the designercollections.

The trend that we are particularly excited about this season isflorals. These absolutely bloomed across the SS16 catwalk

collections with much of the focusbeing on English summer gardenflowers. Designers used flower printsand patterns on feminine silhouettesand we have seen these translated ontothe shop floor at Morgan Clare, particularly with designers such as StellaMcCartney, A.L.C, Joseph and Velvet.

Florals this season have playedhomage to the nostalgic seventies. Darkcolour combinations and attention-commanding pieces will make thistheme feel fresh again. Etoile for SS16has summed up the 70s floral vibe verywell with their boho floral dresses andjackets.

The bloom trend, often present inthe world of fashion, but portrayed witha different twist on each appearance canalso be found this season in accessories. We have seen this from designers suchas Sophia Webster, Stella McCartneyand Sophie Anderson. Sophia Webstersinspiration for the SS16 collections wasunderwater and her playful Lilico shoesfeature a stunning combination of vividblooms and coral these truly are amust have for any fashionista.

So whether in full statement bigblooms top-to-toe (try the Stella daisydress) or a subtle ditsy floral boho top(Etoiles is perfect) toned down withjeans, the floral trend is perfect foreveryone. We love it!

  • All girls together

    NS Education

Arguably the single greatestbenefit of a girls only educationis the greater breadth ofeducational opportunity an all-girls classroom can create.Without the pressure of gender expectations, subject choices are not bound by genderstereotypes and pupils can enjoy a nurturingenvironment where they can thrive andbecome the best they can be.

Sylvia Brett, Principal at Harrogate LadiesCollege says: In an all-female environmentthere is less gender-based pressure when itcomes to subject choice. Almost a third of allour sixth formers for example, study physicsA-level, a subject that nationally attracts lownumbers of girls. Research from the GirlsSchools Association (GSA)actually suggests that girls are75 per cent more likely totake maths and two-and-a-halftimes as likely to take physicsin a single-sex school. ButSylvia believes the benefits ofa girls-only education atsenior school stretch farbeyond freedom in subjectchoice.

There is lots of researchto suggest that girls and boyslearn in different ways, shesays. As a girls senior school,

we understand girls and the way they learnand are able to adapt our teaching methodsto suit their needs. We believe that this inturn enables our girls to learn moreeffectively and ultimately, to achieve betterresults.

Naturally, academic results are part of thereason for choosing a girls only seniorschool. But, as teenage life brings manypressures and uncertainties for girls, perhapsmore so today than ever before, Sylviabelieves an all-girl school can help to reducesome of these pressures. It provides the girlswith the freedom to be who they are; to takemore risks; and to build greater confidence. They can know themselves better anddevelop resilience and self-awareness.

At Harrogate Ladies College, a girls

senior school education doesnt meanexcluding boys from all parts of life and thereare, of course opportunities for socialinteraction with boys. They do believehowever, that girls work best and achievemore when they learn and develop alongsideother girls.

As Principal of a girls only senior schoolI am totally focussed on delivering the verybest education possible to our girls and toproviding a safe and secure environment thatallows them to be the very best that they canbe. We understand just how critical seniorschool years are in terms of shaping long-term futures, but we believe that they shouldalso be exciting, inspiring and stimulating atime of building confidence, increasingindependence; and of becoming comfortable

with who you are.At Harrogate Ladies

College we focus on providinggirls with an all-round education, which will ensure that they havethe best possible opportunitieswhen they move on to the nextstage in their lives.

  • After preparing your garden for springtime, you will be starting to think aboutmaking your garden colourful in time for the glorious summer months. Whatflowers shall I plant in the spring season?

Pansies One of the best flowers to plant in spring.Usually placed in containers. They need to be planted in the sun or a spot partly in the shade in well-drained soil.

LilacsCome in all shapes and sizes from shrubs to trees. They need full sun and well-drained soil to thrive in spring.

DaffodilsThey come in a variety of colours: Orange, white, yellow, orange-red and salmon. They also need full sun and well-drained soil to survive.

DahliasPut the plants in pots at the beginning of spring inside, e.g a conservatory. TheDahlias will have grown to six-inch plants by May.Alternatively, if you do not wish to start the plants growing inside, waitapproximately three weeks until the weather is warmer and frost is not aslikely. Plant them in direct sunlight, deep into the soil so the tubers aresheltered from the cold.Support the stems by tying them to soft twine. Water them regularly in dry weather, and feed regularly over the summer months.

Spring gardens where the magichappensNow that the cold winter months are finallybehind us, its time to embrace the longerdays and put our green fingers to good use.

Whether youre a beginner or anadvanced gardener, you will know that springis one of the busiest times and the need toprepare in advance is crucial.

Here are some top tips to make sure youare on top of things for the spring months:

Get rid of weeds. As the weather becomeswarmer, your garden will start to feel aliveagain. The weeds that you dread to seecovering your garden will start appearing, along with ivy and brambles on the base ofhedges; get rid of them as soon as possible.

Mow your lawn. You have probably beenavoiding doing jobs in your garden over thecold winter period. If you havent cut yourlawn yet, it is best to do so at the start of thespring months.

Tie back trees. Trees and climbers that havebeen damaged from snow or frost can now bepushed back into shape; this will help themgrow throughout the forthcoming months.

All Nature seems at work. Slugs leave their lairThe bees are stirring, birds are on the wing,

And Winter slumbering in the open air,Wears on his smiling face a dream of spring.

Keep it trimAt this busy time of year for gardeners, thefinal key task is pruning. This involves thecutting away of dead, overcrowded branchesor stems of a bush or flower. The followingplants need pruning in early spring:

Ornamental grasses Tie the tops before cutting, it makes for aneasier job.Cut the stems close to the ground.

Perennials These can also be cut back anytime in winter. Cut back to four inches to generate strongernew stems.

Evergreens Prune the stems with damaged foliage fromthe winter months.

Flowers Summer flowering trees, shrubs, vines, hydrangeas and roses Eliminate dead and damaged stems.Cut size as required.

Popular vegetables to grow in your gardenGrowing your own vegetables can be very beneficial and cost saving. If youre thinking aboutgrowing crops, the middle of April is the best time to ensure your veg are the tastiest theycan be. Focus on how much space you have in your garden; this will tell you what you cangrow. If space is limited, think about buying dwarf selections or patio vegetables.

CarrotsBest grown in the open ground and in hot weather. If the foliage starts wilting, water the carrots every ten days.Make sure you weed before planting; if you let weeds grow, they could overcrowd the carrots.Be careful when weeding that you dont crush the foliage, the smell can attract carrot fly, which can lay eggs. Putting abarrier over the carrots can prevent this.

Leaf lettuce Thin seedlings when leaves start to appear, proceed untilthe plants are 30cm apart. The plants need watering when the soil is dry in themornings.Lettuce can attract sparrows, a barrier can prevent this.

Onions To grow efficiently, they require a sunny, well-sheltered spotwith fertilised soil. Best grown in open ground.Plant each onion 10cm apart.Stop watering and feeding once the onions have grown bigger.Birds can try and lift the skin of the onion at the top, beforeplanting remember to remove the skin.

Potatoes After the potatoes have been planted and the stems are23cm high, it is essential that you start earthing up, draggingsoil up covering the stems to produce a 15cm high range.Earthing up is essential; it protects developing potatoesfrom a substance called light. Light potatoes are green incolour and are poisonous.

Keep it green andlushEvery gardener takes pride in their lawn;however it can be hard to keep yourgrass looking green and healthy all yearround. Spring is the best time to tend toyour lawn. Here are some essential tips: Fertilise in early spring to promoteroot development

Remove small amounts of soil to helpyour lawn aerate, this allows the waterand fertiliser to infiltrate deeper into thesoil.

Cutting your lawn to the correctheight depends on the time of the year.In spring, use a one-inch cutting heightto remove dead grass and allow light topenetrate the roots. In summer thecutting height can be raised to two ormore inches.

To ensure your lawn is fresh for allseasons you should soak the grassrather than sprinkle lightly; a mainreason for this is so the water gets tothe deep roots.

Summer gardens atime for relaxationand enjoyment After working hard over the springplanting, pruning and growing, summershould be a time of enjoyment. There is stillwork to do, but your garden is at its best,so make sure you find the time to sit back, relax and enjoy it.

However, just before you start to cooloff, you should check your plants and

vegetable crops for diseases. You will notice that your spring vegetables are ready to harvest, but it is essential that you check your crops and plants for signs of contamination.

Common diseases found in your vegetable gardens and plants Southern blight The fungus that causes this attacks roots, stems and leaves that are under thesurface of the soil. First you will notice a wilting of the foliage. A white fungus growth mayappear next if the soil is warm and moist. As the disease progresses, all plants that are next toeach other in a row will die. To try and prevent it, crop rotation for vegetables might stop thefungus from occurring.

Leaf spots They commonly affect many vegetables and can affect plants. These spots arecaused by fungi or bacteria. They appear mainly on leaves of plants and sometimes on theirstems. The spots are dark tan in colour. Applying fungicide can help control the bacteria andthe spots effectively.

Heres how to harvest thevegetables you planted in spring:

CarrotsThey are ready to harvest, two to threemonths after they have been planted.Loosen the ground with a fork to checkthat they are big enough.

Leaf lettuce This type of lettuce matures around 40days after seeding. Harvest as soon asthe leaves are big enough, around four tofive inches long. Harvest the plant in themorning when the leaves are full ofmoisture.

OnionsAs soon as the onions are big enoughyou can harvest them. Usually they willneed harvesting in mid to late summer.

PotatoesYou can harvest your potatoes whenthey have reached the size you want.Use a fork to help lift the soil and takethe tubers out by hand.

Top tips for keepingyour garden lookingvibrant When we think of summer, we think of alarge colourful array of flourishing flowersand vibrant green grass in our gardens.Keeping outdoors looking its best requirescare and attention.

Deadheads need to be removed regularly, this stimulates the growth of the plant

In the summer it is essential to keep flowersand plants watered. Water plants at thebeginning and the end of the day; try to avoidwatering the plants in mid-afternoon whenthe sun is at its strongest.

Keep on top of weeds, they can be removedeasily when the weather is hot, therefore itseasy to keep on top of weed growth insummer.

During the summer, we might see periodsof dry weather; you can prevent your lawnfrom drying out by keeping it longer thanusual. Applying a lawn fertiliser at the start ofsummer will limit the damage to your lawn.

After harvesting your crops and maintainingthe keep of flowers and plants, your gardenwill be looking at its best. As soon as itssummer time, spend as much time outdoorsas possible; this summer its time to make itlook and feel even better with some of 2016sgarden trends, suitable for all different typesof gardens.

Garden trends 2016 Bringing the indoors outdoorsThis years top gardening trend focuses on comfort, bringing furniture into our gardens likethat inside our homes. New, contemporary, weather-resistant materials mean that you canachieve this style this summer. If you dont wish to change your furnishings, keeping blanketsoutdoors on late summer evenings will also ensure a cozy surrounding, perfect forentertaining and socialising in summer months.

LED fairy lightsThere is nothing better than adding a bit of sparkle to a garden party. Fairy lights areperfect for making your outside space look inviting when having friends over. These lightsare perfect for decorating in bushes and trees and are perfectly safe for families.

Animal nesting boxes, bird baths and feedersAs well as bringing comfort outdoors, this year its about caring for our furry and featheredfriends. Autumn and wintergardens a time forpreparationThe colour of the leaves will start to change, days suddenly get shorter and wildlife willstart to hibernate in a struggle to keep warm.Autumn and winter brings a quieter time inthe garden; use this time to prepare for nextyears spring season.

With the expected cold winterconditions, at the start of autumn you shouldstart thinking about protecting your plantsfrom the imminent frost.

Protecting your plants from winterdamage Abstain from using fertilisers high innitrogen; these encourage plants to make asappy growth that is receptive to damage inthe cold winter period.

You can protect trees from shielding its basewith a fleece, helping to keep the treeinsulated from the cold weather.
