has said that he wishes to step down
as Co-Chair of the North West
Valuing People Group. The Group

thanks and best wishes for the future.
Every year local health and care
organisations set their plans and
priorities (known as commissioning
intentions) for the year ahead.

Intentions:Surrey Heartlands CCGs
and Surrey County Council
Presentation from Femi Adedeji

To reflect closer working across Guildford and Waverley, North West
Surrey and Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs)
and Surrey County Council, as well as work happening across the
wider Surrey Heartlands area, this year joint commissioning
intentions have been developed for health and social care.
These intentions, or plans, reflect priorities for health and social
care across a range of areas and set out how the CCGs will
commission care that meets the needs of the local population. They
also summarise how the NHS’ national priorities will be achieved.
The views of GP practices, health and social care providers and
other partners have already been sought, who have helped shape
thinking and now local people and wider stakeholders are being
invited to have their say.
Through the survey below, feedback on the plans, particularly any
comments on any areas or issues that you feel may not be being
addressed are very welcome.
https://www.surreysays.co.uk/deputy-ceo/commissioning/
The survey closes on 18 February 2018.
All the feedback received will be analysed and the findings will
inform the final joint commissioning intentions, which will be
published in April 2018. All analysis and reporting will be aggregated
and anonymised.

Questions
Shona King asked whether a month
was long enough to do the
consultation. Femi said that ideally
they would have a lot longer but this
was time period given by NHS
England.
Katie Hougham said that it is a good
opportunity for people to be able to
comment on what is and what is not
proposed.
Shona asked whether East Surrey
CCG has issued anything similar.
Sarah Linington said she hasn’t seen
anything but she will circulate it if she
does.
Sarah said that there is not currently
an Easy Read version of the survey
but North West Surrey CCG will
supply this is requested.

Update from Sarah Wood
During 2017, Healthwatch Surrey did some research to
find out about the difficulties people find communicating
with their GP’s and the staff at surgeries.
120 people from “seldom heard” communities spoke to
the local champion for users of health and social care,
about their ‘GP Journey’. Some of the groups involved
had specific communication needs when visiting their
GP, for example; people who are deaf, people with
visual impairment, people with aphasia, and members of
the Nepalese community for whom English is a second
language.
Most people were happy overall with the care they
received from their GP, but there were common
frustrations relating to problems with communication and
telephone booking systems, physical access to the
surgery and the lack of continuity of care for people with
long term conditions.
Findings of the new report, ‘My GP Journey’ included:
• Where surgeries offered an email contact as an
alternative to phone booking (an essential alternative
for those who cannot use the phone), patients told us
that messages could be left unanswered for up to 2
weeks.
• People who are deaf or experience hearing loss
reported a lack of provision of British Sign Language
(BSL) interpreters, hearing loops and SMS numbers.

Update from Sarah Wood
• Patients with certain conditions that can make
communication more difficult, such as aphasia,
dementia or being deaf, felt there was a need for
greater understanding by some GPs and practice
staff of their particular communication needs – for
example not just ‘talking louder’.
• There was little awareness of services which should
make booking easier such as NHS 111 out-of-hours
and online appointment booking among those we
spoke to.
• Communication wasn’t the only barrier. Less
physically able people found some surgeries difficult
to navigate, including slopes which were too steep,
no handrail and automatic doors that closed too
quickly.

Update from Sarah Wood
As Healthwatch Surrey did not manage to speak to
anyone with a learning disability, they have now made
this a priority for the next stage of the research and will
be asking Sarah Linington to circulate some questions
on their behalf.

Questions
Tom Moore had asked Sarah Linington to ask the
following question on his behalf.
Tom said that It would be useful if the feedback
Healthwatch gets, includes some from people with a
learning disability who are also autistic (as a large
minority of people using LD services).
Susan Brown said that GP Records Online vary
between GP practices. Some let the patients see
their blood test results, others do not.
Shona King said that she has had lots of positive
examples with local GP’s but there is still an issue
with chasing for Annual Health Checks.
