The 5 Hardest Jobs to Fill in 2013

Fast-growing start-ups are waginga war for top talent. But amongeven the most difficult positions toslot, a few emerge as the mostchallenging of all.The tech and start-up industries con-tinue to thrive in many cities through-out the United States, especially inSan Francisco, Boston, and NewYork. Although many people are stilltalking about the so-called Series Afunding crunch stalling seed-fundedcompanies that have failed to gainsignificant traction, it's still an excep-tional time to be an entrepreneur. Why? The barriers to entry for a newtech company are a lot lower thaneven a few years ago because of theadvancements of cloud computingand access to hosting options likeAmazon Web Services. And funding isstill accessible for great teams andgreat business ideas.Plus, there are new financing outlets

available through crowdfundingsites. For example, Formlabs, adesktop 3D printing company, raisedan initial seed round of capital andthen went on to raise $3 millionthrough a crowdfunded Kickstartercampaign. What does all of this mean for thehiring landscape this year?Competition for top-tier talent contin-ues to be fierce. It's still ultra-competitive in each ofthe five areas I outlined last year. But I am noticing five new sectors inwhich it is getting extremely chal-lenging to recruit, too:Big DataWhile 'big data' is a trendy term that,at this point, probably makes youcringe, it's also a huge reality. Theamount of data that is generated intoday's world is amazing. Did you

know that Facebook processes 2.5 bil-lion pieces of content and more than500 terabytes of data each day? Yes,each day. Incredible.Data is great. But unless you havesomeone who is able to build out aninfrastructure to wrestle with--and makesense of--it, data is useless.I've seen a steady increase in thedemand for data scientists who have apassion for solving complex analyticalproblems as well as experience workingwith large, multi-faceted data sets. This demand for data scientists touchesalmost every industry, and comes upacross many functional areas within acompany, not just engineering. Forexample, marketing departments areincreasingly seeking data scientists tohelp develop content strategy.MobileEven before the iPhone, I remembereach time I went to a panel discussion,I would hear: "This is the year ofmobile." Now, if you're not thinkingmobile first, you're likely compromisingyour growth trajectory already. The demand for mobile talent is explod-ing, and the market for people whohave mobile experience is ultra-com-petitive. For example, software engi-neers who have developed iOS or
