CALENDAR

2 NorScottarian, July 15, 2020

Rotary Quiz WinnerPat DeLuca correctly named last week's Mystery Rotarian, Merle Anderson, "who lives in two states, has organized ag cooperatives internationally, was an Army drill sergeant, has family in Uganda, and can hold up a 'Quiet' sign at golf tournamets."

This Week's Mystery RotarianThis week's Mystery Rotarian is a Bettendorf High School graduate who was a kindergarten teacher. Her two children are "Irish Twins," born in the same year, but not actually twins. One is a family physician and one is Under Secretary of Homeland Security for the U.S. government. She has been a member of Rotary 12 years and chaired our club's Youth and Literacy committees. Email your answers to [email protected].

The newest member of our Family of Rotary is Grace Elizabeth Olsen, born to Patrick and Megan on June 22 at Genesis East. Grace weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 19-1/2 inches long. She is welcomed by sister Addison, 2, who is obviously a happy big sister. According to Patrick, everybody is doing well.

Assistant Governor Tim Lane of Bettendorf Rotary (formerly North Scott) made a cameo appearance and presented the 2020-21 podium theme banner to President Brad Burt.

Jeff Martens (r) administered Zoom, while Georgine Schinckel played piano.

Marcia Brandt introduced the speaker, Diane Koster. The Zoom screen is at back, and tables were spaced apart.

Jim Smith challenged the authenticity of the charter Jeremy gave Brad at the installation Party. Rotarians – members of the jury – viewed the signatures (see close-up, at left), proclaimed it was a FRAUD – and demanded the only proof to the contrary would be for Brad to present the REAL charter!

Where's the charter?

The Object of RotaryThe Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal

of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FiRST: The development of acquaintance as an oppor-tunity for service;

SECOND: High ethical standards in business and profes-sions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THiRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH: The advancement of international understand-ing, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the

The Four-Way Test(of the things we Think, Say or Do)

1. Is it the TRUTH?2. Is it FAiR to all concerned?3. Will it build GOODWiLL and BETTER FRiENDSHiPS?4. Will it be BENEFiCiAL to all concerned?

Notes from last Friday: Dr. Brad Burt presided at his first meeting as president, and our first meeting in person since March 5. Approximately 40 members were in attendance and about 20 more by Zoom. Honorary member Duncan Cameron was a guest.

Marcy Zogg, Vice President of Community Engagement for United Way of the Quad Cit-ies, invited Rotarians to sup-port the "Stock the School" drive on July 16 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Quad-City Times building, by provid-ing supplies for students. $30 will provide a complete backpack for one student. We can buy supplies virtually at UnitedWayQC.org/GiveVirtually.

President Brad welcomed members connecting by Zoom. He was interrupted by Jim Smith, who said the signatures on the club charter which was presented to Brad at the Installation Party looked like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy (pictures on page 3). The Corn Boil will be Thursday, July 30 at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds. Watch for signup sheet for members and families. Tom Messer said Smokin Butts will serve the barbecue at the Sept. 11 Golf Outing at Glynn's Creek. In a time for personals, Dick Cole gave a tribute to Dennis Peterson whom he said was a real teacher and mentor for youths who worked with him at his apart-ments. Committee Interest Sheets were on the tables and members are urged to fill them out and sign them!

Sergeant-at-arms John Maxwell raised only $1 with a fine for Steve Powell for having a new tenant, and used his time to talk about grain prices (bad), the last tour on his farm (Feb. 28), and the practical aspects of decisions about masks confronting the Board of Supervisors.

Marcia Brandt in-troduced Diane Koster, who shared her heartfelt story about her daughter and former North Scott Rotar ian, Lindsay Thul's, bat-tle with Imflamma-tory Breast Cancer, which claimed her life on Feb. 1, 2017. The story is cap-tured in the book, "Lindsay's Legacy." Copies are for sale for $20. – Bill Tubbs,

Interim Editor
