Benefit of the ARTS for our Children With this term focusing on the production and kapa haka as major events, I thought it would be an opportune time to talk about how the ARTS can benefit our children. In reading some of the current research I came across the following points: Your children learn to think creatively, with an open mind Your children learn to observe and describe, analyse and interpret Your kids learn to express feelings with or without words The ARTS introduce your kids to cultures from around the world The ARTS build confidence because it allows children to feel pride in his or her original artistic creations or performances. The ARTS help to build a strong sense of community. They allow all students to have success in some way whether big or small. They allow children to develop a wide range of skills, to learn to think outside the box, to problems solve, to take risks, to use their imagination and to share. They allow the children to have fun and to work together. For a school such as ours where our vision statement is about nurturing well-rounded citizens, the ARTS are a perfect tool through which we can work towards this goal. This year’s production will be a wonderful opportunity for all of our students to engage in the ARTS process whether it be on stage, backstage or as a technical helper. They will all play a very important part. We are certainly looking forward to presenting this to you. Ngā mihi nui Darryn Ward 1

Just some of our rubbish monitors at the Rangiora Winter Festival.

Benefit of the ARTS for our ChildrenWith this term focusing on the production and kapa haka as major events, I thought it would be an opportune time to talk about how the ARTS can benefit our children. In reading some of the current research I came across the following points:

● Your children learn to think creatively, with an open mind● Your children learn to observe and describe, analyse and interpret● Your kids learn to express feelings with or without words● The ARTS introduce your kids to cultures from around the world● The ARTS build confidence because it allows children to feel pride in his or her original artistic creations

or performances.

Rangiora Winter FestivalOn Friday and Saturday a number of our students were involved in either helping at the festival or taking up the offer of some free ice skating. Friday morning started with the Ice Skating which was free. It was great to see so many of our students at the rink and Terry Bennett having a go at the 9 in 10 competition run by the TV3 AM programme. This link takes you to the news item showing Terry and our students http://www.newshub.co.nz/home/shows/2017/07/9-in-10-in-rangiora.html

On the Saturday we had a good number of our students working at the festival as bin monitors. These children did an amazing job. They took it upon themselves to not only keep the bins tidy but also to sort the rubbish that other people had by taking it off them as they came to the area.

Often we talk about how important it is that our children are great ambassadors for our school. Well - this was certainly the case. So many positive comments were given about the work they were doing. Thank you to all the children and parents who attended and helped and to Mrs Hassall for organising this. If you are a Facebook user visit the Rangiora Winter Festival Page where there is a great article. It has also been shared on the North Loburn page.

Parent Teacher Calendar AppIf you have already done so you can download the Parent Teacher CalendarApp for free. North Loburn School is onthe APP. It is a great place to for information. We will be looking to ensure that our new website is linked to the co-ordinators ofthe APP to ensure the information is up to date.

Lost PropertyAs a school the amount of lost property we generateis relatively small. I would like to remind parents to pleaseensure that all items of clothing are named. In particularit seems to be the sweatshirts that we are finding at the moment. It would be appreciate if you could take a momentto check that your children’s clothing is clearly named.

Great to have the ChromebooksAt the end of last term we were fortunate to take delivery of 50 new chromebooks which we have leased for a 3 year period. These devices are being used by the children in Kahikatea and Kauri. I am pleased to be able to report that they are loving having these available to them and that the teachers are finding them a great tool for the students to be using in their learning.

The Tasman Tykes - Overall scoreIn last week’s newsletter we acknowledged the fine work that was done by our Agrikids Teams and in particular the Tasman Tykes who were second overall.

The table below shows there overall scoring on their way to the second prize.

School Production - Auditions have startedWe have had a number of our senior students trying out for the lead roles in the school production for this year. There are 5 main characters who will be linking the show throughout. I would like to wish the children who are auditioning all the very best. I am sure this is going to be a very tough decision.

Year 7 and 8 TechnologyThe new programme for Year 7 and 8 technology has started off well. We have a good number of projects that our students are working on. I was very pleased to be able to talk with some of our Year 7 and 8 students and to hear just how excited and enthusiastic they were about what they are working on. Thank you to Mrs Pettigrew for the lead up work that she has done with her class as this has ensured they have hit the ground running. I am certainly looking forward to the end results.
