Kia ora whānau,

I hope that you have all had a lovely long weekend and that you have been able to enjoy some of the nice weather. I took the opportunity to head over to Akaroa on Sunday and it was certainly very busy. One of the cafe owners I spoke to said that they had expected a busy weekend but had been blown away by the sheer volume of people in and around the area.

Last week we saw some changes announced by the Government in regards to the numbers of people that can attend gatherings. You will see later in the newsletter some more information about how this will impact on what we can offer here at school in the coming weeks.

This week will see the return of our Garden to Table programme with 4 sessions planned for this term. Obviously these are sad times with the knowledge that Cherry will be leaving us at the end of the term, however we want to ensure that we have 4 great sessions so that we can farewell Cherry in style. I would like to make a special acknowledgement of all of those parents who have put their hand up to act as helpers for the programme this term. We really do appreciate you helping hands.

Have a great week everyone.

Ngā mihi nui, Darryn Ward

Alert Level 2 Update and Reminders - Week 8At this stage things will remain the same as they have over the last couple of weeks in regards to the expectations we have for dropping and picking children up. The latest information we have received states that we must still be maintaining the appropriate practices during Alert Level 2 to contact trace and keep people safe.

School Drop Off and Pick UpOur message around dropping children off at school remains the same. Our preference is for parents to drop their children off at the gate rather than coming into school. If there is a need for you to come onto the school grounds then you will be required to fill out a contact tracing register either at the office, or in the classroom.

The arrangements for picking the children up after school remain the same as those published in the last two newsletters. They are also consistent with what the rest of the schools in our Kahui Ako are doing. We will certainly be keeping our parents and whānau informed of any changes in terms of these arrangements as they come to hand.

School Assembly - we are happy to welcome parents back! Due to the change in numbers that can gather in one place, I am now happy to be able to welcome parents back to school on Friday afternoon for our school assembly. For those attending we would ask that they fill out the contact tracing register as they enter the hall. We will have the seats spaced to ensure that guests are kept apart during the assembly. At the end of the assembly we will still be asking our children to exit from the same gates they have been using. If you are attending the assembly then it may pay to park near the exit that your children will be using.

Children who are unwellIt is important to remember that if your children are unwell to please keep them at home. If children are unwell and are attending school we will be sending them home. If you have any questions in regards to your child’s health please feel free to contact the school.

School BusPlease remember that if your child has a change of arrangements with regards to using the school bus, please let us know. Also, at the moment we are not able to take extra passengers on the bus. It can only be those who are on our normal bus lists.

Contact TracingI am aware the use of a digital contact tracing app is not the preferred option for all of our parents. We will have some posters arriving soon that the MOE have sourced that schools can use for those parents who do wish to use the NZ Covid Trace app. We also have the Skool Loop app which has the ability for people to log in and out of the site. For others who come on site and prefer the paper version we will still have these available for recording details. Please remember: our preference at the moment is for parents to only come on site if they absolutely need to (the school assembly and GTT are class as exceptions).

Garden to Table - Expressions of InterestLast week we published the sad news that Cherry Burgess will be finishing up with us at the end of the term.

We are extremely keen to hear from anyone who feels that the role of GTT Kitchen Specialist is something they would enjoy doing.

If you would like to get more information on what this role as kitchen specialist involves, including the hours involved, or to put your name forward for this role please contact me at [email protected] and I will make a time to meet with you. Cherry has very kindly offered to help transition our new Kitchen Specialist into the role in the new term.

Cross CountryOur children have been making the most of the good weather and have been getting out on the track and field to perfect their cross country running skills. From my office window I have a great view of the effort they are putting into their running.

The date for our school event is the 17th June. I am please to be able to share that we will be welcoming parents on to the school grounds for that event as well. More information will be shared about this in coming weeks.

Last week I took the opportunity to get some photos of our children while they were practicing. Here are some of them.

Student Sign In and Sign Out registerPlease remember that if you need to take your child out of school for any reason during the day, or if they are arriving late, that there is a register in the office where they need to be signed in / signed out by a parent. This is part of our Health & Safety procedures and is particularly important if we have an emergency on site.

Jump Jam and BootcampEach week we have Jump Jam sessions for the last twenty minutes of the day. Thanks to the wonderful energy and skill of Mrs Connelly we have a number of children who have been or are being trained as leaders. These children give up their own time to perfect their skills and to be able to lead the rest of the school.

We were due to have a visit to school by the founder of Jump Jam, Brett Fairweather, however this had to be cancelled due to the Covid 19 situations.

We were aware that for some of our older children Jump Jam was not a favourite activity so last week we sat down with some of our older students to discuss Jump Jam with them and to see what other fitness programmes we could offer our Year 5 to 8 students. A Google form was sent out to all the Year 5-8 students asking them to choose which option they would like and to provide a reason. This was great data for us to gather. The end result was a small group of students opting to try an alternative option for the rest of this term. In offering an alternative we were quick to point out the physical exercise is a compulsory part of our school curriculum and that any alternative option would still need to have a physical focus.

The end result was setting up of a bootcamp style programme for these students with a range of exercise stations for them. Each exercise lasts for 30 seconds before they move onto the next one. Mrs Hassall is overseeing the Bootcamp and so far the children have been giving it a great go.

I took the opportunity to grab some pictures last week of the Jump Jam and the Bootcamp.

School Cell Phone Last week we posted a notice in the newsletter stating that we had been gifted a cell phone for the school and that we would be looking to use this for parents who wanted to text in any child absences.

Unfortunately this phone does not appear to be picking up the message as we missed a number of them last week. We are unsure what the reason is therefore ww would ask that parents please go back to either phoning in, emailing the office / teacher or using the Skool Loop app which has a child absence section.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the cell phone issues.

Parent Interviews for Term 2 - We can now confirm these datesWe are aiming to hold our Parent Interviews (as long as Alert Level 2 guidelines allow) on the 23rd and 24th June. The bookings will be able to be made online closer to the time. The interviews will give teachers an opportunity to share information on how the children settled back in this term, how their progress is going and also to make some goals for the coming term.

The Board have agreed to close school early on Wednesday 24th June with children heading home at 12:30pm. We will arrange for the bus to run early on this day. We would kindly ask parents to please make arrangements for the care of your children on the 24th from 12:30pm.

On Tuesday we will be supervising the children at school in the afternoon with Mr Ward running some activities while the teachers start their interviews.

Some more Myths and Legends CreationsLast week I highlighted some of the great work that is being done in Totara as part of their Myths and Legends work.

Here are some more of the sculptures that were on display.

Loburn Okuku Business DirectoryJodie Densem has developed the Loburn Okuku Business Directory because everyone is wanting to support the locals (now, more than ever) and they don’t always make themselves easy to find!

To make the directory as comprehensive as possible, anyone can list their business / service in the area for free. We also offer a paid premium listing, half of this pays for the running costs of the site and half goes back to the community. Just select the group (North Loburn School!!) you wish to support at the checkout. Please check out https://loburnokuku.biz/ and list your business .
