Since then, the charity has developedagricultural, horticultural, conservation, artand craft andwoodworkprojectsalongwithadultliteracy,officeskills,andevenadramaproject.And,TheGranaryTearoomandshopis now an established social enterprise,sellinglocalproduce,plantsandherbs.

LIFE & STYLE

Leonora was born in 1873 in Hunslet. Her father, Canova Throp, a sculptor, died of TB when she was only five, and his widow Jane struggled to bring up their three children alone, working as a seamstress.

At 14, Leonora was apprenticed to a city centre milliner and worked long hours without pay until she was upgraded as a probationer, then paid 2s 6d a week. By 16, having proved herself skilled and efficient, she was promoted to head milliner. In her mid-twenties she became a millinery buyer in Bridlington, and in 1900 she married Henry Cohen, her long-term sweetheart from Leeds.

Neither family approved. The Jewish Cohens were dismayed that their son was marrying an outsider, and cut him off. Leonora’s mother felt that her daughter should not marry at all, but devote her life to improving the lot of her fellow women, ill-paid, exploited, and with no political voice.

Leonora and Henry set up house in Leeds. Their first baby died, but a son followed, and for the next nine years Leonora devoted herself to being a wife and mother. Henry prospered in his jewellery business and their life was happy and comfortable. But Leonora did not forget her earlier experience and her mother’s sense of injustice: she took an increasing interest in campaigns to improve women’s pay and conditions and in the women’s suffrage movement. Henry and her brothers encouraged and supported her political activities.

By 1911 Leonora was secretary of the Leeds branch of the militant

Women’s Social and Political Union. In November the Prime Minister, Herbert Asquith, broke his commitment to votes for women by announcing a manhood suffrage bill. This betrayal inspired Leonora to fight on. Although terrified by the prospect of violence, she joined a deputation to Westminster, and a huge demonstration ensued, ending with window-smashing and stone-throwing. She and many others were arrested and imprisoned. She served seven days in Holloway, an experience which only hardened her resolve. Her family staunchly stood by her, though they lost all their friends.

Under the leadership of the Pankhursts, suffragette guerrilla activities spiralled and in Leeds Leonora addressed meetings and rallies, exposing herself to constant abuse and threats. In 1913 she joined demonstrations in London, where she chose the Tower of London for her own dramatic protest. She was so nervous that she travelled round twice in the tube before entering the Tower with her hidden weapon.

Leonora was put on trial but acquitted on a technicality. Back in Leeds, she continued her militant activities alongside other fervent loyalists. Asquith’s visit to Leeds in November 1913 was a red rag. In spite of tightened security, two suffragettes tried to set fire to the Headingley football stand, and violent demonstrations took place around the Hippodrome where Asquith was to speak. Leonora was arrested for smashing windows and was sent to Armley Gaol. She declared a hunger and thirst strike.

Two days later, near collapse, she was released on licence under the notorious ‘Cat and Mouse’ Act. Desperate and angry, Henry wrote to the Home Secretary in protest, but was persuaded to take Leonora away to avoid further life-threatening imprisonment. They moved to Harrogate, where Leonora set up a vegetarian boarding house, once giving sanctuary to a suffragette fleeing from the police.

The outbreak of war in 1914 interrupted the suffragette campaigns and brought about a change of heart in government. In February 1918 women over 30 were given the vote, and 10 years later women over 21 finally attained full voting equality with men.

Leonora remained energetic and active during and after the war, and in the 1920s the family moved back to Leeds, to Clarendon Road (marked by a blue plaque). Awarded an OBE in 1928, she served as a Leeds magistrate for over 30 years. She never lost her ideals, devoting much of her time to the Trade Union movement, campaigning for better working conditions.

Her devoted Henry died in 1949, but Leonora, fighter as she was, lived on until she was 105.

On Saturday 1 February 1913 an elegantly dressed woman followed a group of school boys into the Jewel House at the Tower of London. The Beefeaters assumed she was a teacher until she suddenly pulled an iron bar from her coat and flung it over the boys’ heads, smashing a glass showcase. She was forced to the ground and arrested. Wrapped around the bar was a piece of paper declaring: ‘This is my protest against the Government’s treachery to the working women of Great Britain’. Her name was Leonora Cohen, a housewife from Leeds.

The Locomotive Act of 1865,requiring self-propelled vehicles onpublicroadstobeprecededbyamanonfootwavingaredflagandblowingahorn,was repealed in1896. Thislead to the manufacture of manytypes of veteran car, sometimescalled‘voiturettes’,includingatleasttwo being manufactured in Leeds,namelytheLux(1900-1904)andtheKitto(1901-1904).

InMay1900, an eleven day and1,000mile car trial fromLondon to Edinburgh and back to Crystal Palace, reachedLeeds.TheLeedsMercuryof15thMayreported“remarkableinterestintheautocarists”withonlyafewaccidentsfromthe“mechanically propelled cars travelling at a speed seldombelowthelegallimitof12milesandsometimesatarateof20and30milesanhour”.TheLeedsstop-overincludedanexhibitionintheDrillHallonFentonStreet.

The early cars were expensive, The Evening Telegraph in1903 reported that “the upkeep of a goodmotor car andmechanician costs fully asmuchas that of a carriageandpairandcoachman”.

Theordinance surveymapof1906 showsonly oneor twoproperties in West Park having what looks like a garage.Indeed at the time, one property on North Parade wasapplying for permission to build a “motor-bicycle and cycleshed”.

The1911 census reflects the growing influence of the car.Living in The Lodge, Weetwood Hall (home of Alf Cooke’sfamily), was Francis Holloway, occupation chauffeur, whilstmore traditionally in the nearby coach house ofWeetwoodMount (home of Robert Hudson), lived William Kellett,occupation coachman. On Welburn Drive, West Park, andprofiting from the new developments was David Lynott acommercialtravellerforpneumatictyres(carandcycletyres).

At a recent public meeting organised by the Friends of Kirkgate Market, we were made aware of various suggestions being put forward by Leeds City Council regarding the future of the Market. The one apparently favoured by the Council advocates cutting the size of the market by 25%, reducing the number of stall holders from 400 to 100, demolishing the newer halls and selling off this prime real estate that’s bang, smack in the middle of the city.

It’strue.Overtheyearswetoohavebuilt upa rapportwithanumberofpeople we shop with regularly. “Welike to get to know our customers”,continued Liz. “A market stall is asmall stage.We can be comedians,counsellors or teachers. We servefamilies, office workers and TVpersonalities. We say hello to thehomeless and lonely. We embracethe strange and loopy and helpthosehavingdifficulties.That’swhatthe market is all about. It’s specialand can’t be replicated. It needsprotectingsothatmoney,greedandshort-sightednessdon’tdestroyit.”

People matter in the market. I love the market humour and personalities. I love the noise and the

This month Red Ladder Theatrecompany,inaco-productionwithLeedsCivicArtsGuildandTheCarriageworks,brings Anthony Clavane’s book,PromisedLand,tothestage.

Written as a personal memoir andcultural history of Leeds, PromisedLand chronicles Clavane’s experiencegrowingupinLeedsinthe1970swithparticular emphasis on the turbulentfortunesofthecity’sfootballclub.

ClavanehaslivedawayfromLeedsfortwenty years and considers himself a‘Loiner inexile’,however,asPromisedLand and his frequent pilgrimages toEllandRoadattest,hisloveforthecityandhisdevotiontoLeedsUnitedremainundimmed. Being the descendant ofRussian Jewish immigrants, the bookalsoaddressesClavane’sancestryandillustrates the role of Leeds’ Jewishcommunityinshapingthehistoryofthecity.

As with many formerly industrialnortherntowns,thesenseofcommunitythat surrounds the local football club(especially in a one club city such asLeeds) is integraltotheidentityofthecity.AsClavaneputsit:“football isthelastbastionofworkingclasscommunalsolidarity”.

Clavane feels thatwith a city such asLeeds,thestoryandcharacterofthecityis inexorably linked with the triumphsandfailuresofitsfootballclub.Hefeels

that the optimism engendered by thecultural and economic regenerationof Leeds since the 60s suggests thatLUFCmaywellriseagainandgainentryto the ‘promised land’ denied themwhentheylosttheEuropeanCupFinaltoBayernMunichin1975.

Theplay,likethebook,lookssettobeanexuberant celebrationof Leeds, itsfootballcluband itscommunities.Thepassion and loyalty of Leeds fans islegendary and, in addition to the livebandplayingoriginalmusicalsowrittenbyClavane, theproductionwill featurethesingingofLeedsfanswhoactasakindofGreekchorus.

As an aspiring writer growing up inLeeds, Clavanewas deeply influencedby the work of KeithWaterhouse andstrongly indentified with the dilemmaof Billy Liar, whether or not to leavehis home city to pursue the enticingopportunity of London. Throughoutthe book there are many nods toWaterhouse’s hero and in developingit theatrically Clavane continues hishomagewithnewembellishmenttohislovelettertoLeeds.

ForthestageversionofPromisedLand,which Clavane has adapted with NickStimson,aparallellovestoryhasbeenintroduced concerning the flourishingromance betweenNathan and Caitlin,two Leeds youngsters divided by theirreligiousandculturalbackgrounds.

As well as presenting a story whichhitsclosetohomeformanyofus,theproductionisalsoashowcaseforlocaltalentandarousingexpressionofcivicpride.AsAnthonyClavanehimselfsays:“I’mreallyexcitedabouttheopportunityto bring this story to life with such alarge cast of local performers – in amonthwhenLeedsiscelebratingsportwith the arrival of the Olympic torch– I think it’s a great chance for us torecognise theambitionand self beliefthatbuiltourcity–theDonRevies,theCuthbertBrodericksandthepioneeringimmigrants,whoaimedforthetop.”

WHAT DID YOU THINK OF HEADINGLEY LITFEST? FEEDBACK WELCOME!This year’s Headingley LitFest – thefifth–wasagreatsuccess.Commentsfrom feedback forms, distributedto audiences, were overwhelminglypositive, as were word-of-mouthcommentsandemailmessages.

Poet Ian McMillan’s performance atLeftBankonCardiganRoadattractedjustundertwohundredpeople.Thereweredozensof ‘rave’ responses,withjustafewcomplaintsthatyoucouldn’thear well at the back. Most peoplewereimpressedbyDrRichardBrown’stalk on Experimental Languages –ElvishandNewspeak–butoneortwowere upset that there was not moreaboutTolkien’sElvish.

The organising committee is nowlooking for even more feedback andadvice–evenfromthosewhocouldn’tmakeittotheLitFestinMarch.

“We are already planning for March2013”, said spokesman RichardWilcocks. “We want to reach everypartofthelocalpopulation,especiallythe younger end, and to learn fromour experiences. We welcome allsuggestionsonevents, themes,guestperformersandvenues.Wealsowantevenmorecommentsonwhatwedid,ordidnotdothisyear.”

Life On-Line, a permanent exhibitionthat opened recently at the NationalMediaMuseuminBradford,isthefirstgalleryofitskindintheworldtoexplorethe social, technological and culturalimpact of the internet and the worldwideweb.

The project has been a long time ingestation and the subject is almostimpossible to surmise as the story ofthe internet continues to unfold andtechnology evolves ever more rapidly.Inpreparingtheexhibition,curatorsatthemuseumwouldreturntoreferenceworks published in the last few yearsonlytofindthemalreadyoutdated.

Asmany visitors to the exhibition willbeunabletorememberwhattheworldwas like before the world wide web,thefirstexhibitdisplaysthetechnologyandmeansofcommunicationweusedbefore computers and the internetinfiltrated nearly every aspect of ourlives. Younger visitors will likely beamused and surprised that beforee-mail people relied on the telegramand post, before search engines likeGooglepeoplelookedupinformationinabookcalledanencyclopaedia.Evenfor those of us who recall life beforethe dawn of the Information Age, theprimitive, archaic technology shownhere seem like artifacts from pre-history.

Itseemsa longwayoff,butyoucanstartsowingbiennialspolyanthus,winter pansies and hellebore seeds now. Lookout for new plants, gently dig them out and pot up. Tidyoriental poppies after flowering and leave seed heads toripen, then store the seeds in used envelopes or scatterreadyfornextyear.Keepsomeseedheadsforuseindriedflowerarrangements.

Their loud, fast and varied song is delivered from a reedstemorbranch,but theywill launch themselves intoshortflutteringsongflights.

Sedge warblers in their chosen places are fairly commonmigrants, showing a slight decline in numbers nationally.This is thought to be related to conditions in their Africanwintering grounds. When rains fail there, the volume ofvisitorsreachinguscanfalldramatically.
