08 World War One

St Mary’s has gone now: only some graves remain, on a quiet hillside by the thundering York Road. In the late nineteenth century this was a deeply impoverished area of squalid back-to-backs and one-room cottages, cramped yards and courts with foul open drains and shared middens – all swept away in later slum clearance. Outbreaks of cholera were particularly bad here. Smoky mills and the vast Hope Foundry in Mabgate polluted the air. This is where Geoffrey grew up, helping with his father’s parish work, getting to know the people, their lives, and their language. The experience gave him a profound affection for the poor, a deep admiration for their spirit and courage, and a fierce hatred of social injustice.

He worked hard at Leeds Grammar School, and, like his father, won a place at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1904 with first class honours in classics and divinity. After two years teaching, he felt called to the ministry. He was ordained in 1908 and appointed as curate in Rugby, where he soon became known for his work among the poor streets and tenements, and for his instinctive generosity – he was always giving away his money, even his clothes.

In 1912 he returned to Leeds as curate at the Parish Church, but was

allowed to help his father, now 87 and still vicar of St Mary’s, in the familiar streets of Quarry Hill. In 1914 he married Emily Catlow, and in the same year his father died. Local people wanted him to take over at St Mary’s, but he went to Worcester, where he chose to work in the most impoverished parish. Everyone was in need – once he even gave away the family bed, assisted by his patient wife!

When war was declared, he was fired by patriotism and a sense of duty, and offered himself as army chaplain. He arrived in France in 1915, sent first to Rouen, where he held impromptu services for the men and saw the troops off to the Front with gifts of bibles and Woodbine cigarettes – winning him his enduring nickname. Soon he was at the Front himself, living with the men in the trenches, sharing their exercises, talking, supporting, comforting. He went into the thick of battle, believing that as padre he had to be where death was closest. In 1917 he won the Military Cross for his courage during the attack on Messines Ridge when, under heavy fire, he helped to find and rescue the wounded - British and German. Sent home for illness or leave, he always returned to the Front, and endured the horrors of the Somme, his role often to kneel in mud, burying the dead. He became an inspirational wartime legend.

During this time he was writing powerful colloquial verse about the horrific experience of war, in the language of his fellow soldiers. These poems struck a deep emotional chord. In 1918, using his nickname Woodbine Willie, he published some of them in ‘Rough Rhymes of a Padre’ which sold 30,000 copies in a few months, followed by ‘More Rough Rhymes…’ and then a further seriess of poetry, as well as books promoting his passionately-held Christian beliefs.

After the war he returned to Worcester but then went to London to join the campaigning crusade for Christian Socialism. He travelled the country and abroad, speaking to groups, always a popular down-to-earth speaker, provoking

laughter and tears. As the Depression worsened, this was a dark time. His health suffered, flu exacerbated his chronic asthma and he died suddenly in March 1929, while on a speaking tour in Liverpool.

He is remembered annually at Leeds Parish Church, and there is renewed interest in him in this centenary year of remembrance. While some of his work is forgotten, his poems stand as a powerful, passionate evocation of the waste and futility of war.

Leeds Philosophical & Literary Society will host a free talk on ‘Woodbine Willie - Unsung Hero of World War I’ by author Bob Holman on 23rd September, 7.30pm in Music Department, University of Leeds. All welcome. Details: www.leedsphilandlit.org.uk/events.html

GEOFFREY ANKETELL STUDDERT KENNEDY (1883-1929) PRIEST AND POET

‘Woodbine Willie’ became something of a legend in the First World War, an Anglican priest who

dispensed cigarettes alongside spiritual help and comfort, and provided a voice for the men

whose experiences he shared in the trenches. His real name was Geoffrey Anketell Studdert

Kennedy (Anketell was his mother’s surname), and he was born and brought up in Leeds, in the

slums of Quarry Hill, where his father William Studdert Kennedy, originally from Ireland, was

vicar of St Mary’s Church. Geoffrey grew up in a large family, the twelfth of fourteen children.

His early life was to set the direction for his future.

Legacies of War: Untold Otley Stories

It all started when Otley Museum volunteer Bill Mulholland

decided to research the circumstances under which his uncle,

Pat Devaney, had been awarded the Military Medal during

the Somme Campaign.

The Museum then expanded upon this, seeking contributions from relatives and descendants. Drawing also on its extensive collections, it presented the untold stories of the men from just one street in Otley, Albion Street, whose names appear on the town’s war memorial, for Heritage Open Day last September.

With the centenary of the First World War just around the corner, the Museum went on to assemble a team of volunteers and acquire Heritage Lottery Funding to produce an exhibition and accompanying booklet examining the war’s impact on various individuals.

‘Legacies of War: Untold Otley Stories’ explores the role played by the 10th (Otley) Battery of the 4th West Riding Howitzer Brigade, which saw action in 38 engagements, including Passchendaele, between April 1915 and November 1918.

There is also a strong emphasis on the town’s home front activities, with displays highlighting the contribution of Otley women

and the role of local industries in manufacturing war-related materials, such as army boots and uniforms. Slightly more unusual aspects of the town’s wartime role are highlighted too, like the training camp and ‘Grenade and Gas School’ at Farnley Hall. Another section focuses attention on the care provided to the 120 Belgian refugees who passed through the town between 1914 and 1919, commemorated by a plaque on the Jubilee Clock in the Market Place.

The exhibition runs from 4th August to 11th November at the Core Resource Centre, with a further display at Otley Museum during this year’s Heritage Weekend on 12th and 13th September. More information is available at www.otleymuseum.org

When he visited the battlefield in 1986, he was so moved by the row upon row of headstones that he vowed to expand his research to take in all those Otley men who never returned home, as soon as he retired. After four years of tireless research, and with the help of regimental historians and organisations like the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Bill presented the Museum with three volumes, detailing the rank, regiment, age at death and site of burial for the 187 men listed on the Otley War Memorial, as well as others who were not recorded.

Thackray Museum Marks WWI Centenary with New Exhibition

A new exhibition exploring how medicine aids recovery from warfare has just opened at Thackray Medical Museum. ‘Recovery? From Flanders to Afghanistan’ focusses on the medical advances that emerged from the First World War, comparing them with modern medicine. The exhibition was created with the help of veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, and was launched by Dr Johnson Beharry VC, the first living recipient of the Victoria Cross in over 30 years.

“The exhibition will look at soldiers’ experiences of hearing loss, limb loss and shell shock”, said Joanne Bartholomew, Director of Collections and Interpretation at the

Museum. “It highlights the long term developments that followed the conflict, such as improvements in technology and rehabilitation, as well as looking at approaches to the treatment of shell shock.

“We have worked with veterans, and servicemen and women, who have experience of the health conditions explored, to give the exhibition a new perspective and bring the medical advances of the First World War into the present. The exhibition will enable visitors to reflect on

how far military medicine has come in 100 years, and the difficulties of healing the body and the mind.”

To accompany the exhibition, a Heritage Trail will be launched in September exploring the museum building as a war hospital during WWI. The trail looks at how the war affected this part of East Leeds, as well as the soldiers who would have been treated in the war hospital.

The exhibition has been funded by the Arts Council England and Thackray Medical Research Trust and supported by the University of Leeds and the University of Huddersfield.

Attention to Detail Pays Off for Harris InteriorsKieran Harris was always determined to open

his own business!

Kieran immediately became an apprentice plumber in his father’s plumbing and heating business. “I learnt from one of the best”, said Kieran. “Trevor’s mantra was, and still is, quality work, friendly, honest service and a fair price. Working as a plumbing and heating engineer I built up my confi dence and got to know products inside out and which ones performed best. I mightn’t have been quite so driven to expand the business without Trevor’s support. But, as customers kept asking us to take on more jobs and insist that we fi t their kitchens too or new fi replaces, because they were so impressed with how we worked, opening our own s h o w r o o m seemed the logical next step.”

Although the Harris Interiors Showroom is very much Kieran’s brainchild, Trevor is right there with him. Not only that, he has also roped in his wife and his mother!

When Harris Interiors took over the building in January it had been empty for years and was a complete wreck. Kieran, Trevor and brother-in-law Richard set about restoring the building from scratch, creating the impressive showroom it is today.

When we spoke to Kieran, they were still putting the fi nal touches to their room sets. “We want to show that we have a wide variety to choose from – from the ultra modern to the traditional”, said Kieran. “We have built all the room sets ourselves, so that people can see the quality of workmanship they’ll be getting. We want people to come in and browse at their

leisure and just talk to us about what they would

like.”W h e r e v e r

British products, but also use top appliance brands like Bosch, Smeg and Neff , as well as budget lines. Their emphasis is on quality – quality brands and quality workmanship. The aim is to cater for everyone, from budget installations to top of the range, with all the care and attention that is evident in the showroom.

“It all comes down to helping our customers get what they want at a price that suits them, and to know that they will get excellent service and quality workmanship”, said Kieran. “I couldn’t be happier – working in our new showroom with my family (the baby isn’t quite old enough to join us yet!) – what more could I ask for?”

Of course, it didn’t happen just like that! Even as a teenager he was consumed by business and always looking for new and better ways to do things. His father, Trevor, had instilled in him that you got nowhere without hard work. As soon as his GCSEs were out of the way he was into Leeds College of Building and was soon representing the college in the national Plumber of the Year competition.

Protecting Your Business with a Lasting Power of Attorney

If you own and run a business, its success may depend on you being there and being capable of running it. Many business owners plan for unexpected death through life insurance policies, shareholder agreements and having a properly drafted will. But is that enough?

If you become incapable of running your business - for example if you have a car or sporting accident, a knock to the head or a debilitating illness - the impact on your business could be tremendous. Having someone appointed in your place could be costly and time-consuming and, in the meantime, the business could grind to a halt, order books could dry up and employees could leave, fearing for their livelihoods.

Liz Stephen at Emsleys Solicitors offers her advice on what more can be done to protect your business if something unexpected were to happen to you.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPoA) for Property and Financial Affairs should be a key priority in your business back-up plan. You should appoint an attorney(s) to manage your financial affairs in the event that you cannot. This could be a spouse, a fellow director, a parent, a son or daughter or a combination of other professionals such as your solicitor or accountant. If you are running a regulated practice, then it may be a requirement of your professional rules to have a LPoA in place, granted to a fellow professional

Making a LPoA should be seen as a one-off insurance policy. But should it be required, it may just save your business.

Exhibition Success for LPSLeeds Photographic

Society’s exhibitions at Salt’s Mill and Saint James’s Hospital were both roaring successes!

The Annual Exhibition at Salt’s Mill saw nearly 900 visitors pass through its doors over the May bank holiday weekend, and the ‘Beauty in the Natural World’ exhibition in the Atrium Gallery of Saint James’s Hospital, had raised over £500 for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre at the time of going to press. This fi gure is expected to double before the exhibition ends on the 3rd August.

The society’s members have continued to run their schedule of Summer tutorials and photographic outings. The tutorials covered a wide range of subjects, from the fi ner points of post processing

digital images, to shooting sports and other moving subjects. Outings have been made to Otley, Appleby Horse Fair and Leeds city centre, where members were able to practice their architectural and street photography.

There is no meeting in August but members will be displaying a number of prints and off ering photographic advice to the public at the Shadwell Flower Show on Saturday 16th August.

The season will reconvene in September with regular Tuesday night meetings featuring a schedule packed with visiting speakers, competitions and other attractions.

Theatre of the Dales Director Adds a Little Ooh La La!!

David then flies off to Luc la Croix Haute, the nearest outpost to a deserted village in the mountains where his friend Bernard Salva is directing his own play, ‘La Derniere Follie d`Hamlet et Kurt Cobain’, the latest in a series of outdoor classics directed by Bernard.

David, despite his limited French, seems to end up in most of the plays. He has just been to Paris for a reading

of Bernard`s play, ‘Dalia, an Odyssey’, and was immediately roped into it to play a French Prospero.

While in France, Serge Alvarez recorded David’s voice for a production of Samuel Beckett`s ‘Krapp`s Last Tape’, which they will work on later, as David at 69 is the same age as the curmudgeonly character who listens to a tape of his 39-year-old former self.

Next Summer Serge will direct David as King Lear for Theatre of the Dales – a promise made after the company`s first outdoor Shakespeare when David was Lear at 60. He also played the role at 40, touring Welsh castles. If he continues like this he will be well qualified to speak the line “I am a very foolish, fond old man, fourscore and upward”!

David Robertson (Theatre of the Dales) is having a busy Summer. His production of The Merry Wives of Windsor has been a big success. If you missed it, there`s another chance to see it on Wednesday 6th August at The Wheatley Arms, Ben Rhydding as part of the Ilkley Summer Festival (for bookings, which include supper, call 01943 816496). The company is also doing an informal rehearsal at 7pm Monday 4th August at Dagmar Wood, just off Grosvenor Road, Hyde Park (call 274 0461 if you need directions).

In fact, Shrek is launching its national tour here in Leeds. The show is based on the story and c h a r a c t e r s from William Steig’s book Shrek! and the DreamWorks A n i m a t i o n s feature fi lm. The show that is coming to Leeds is exactly the same as the one that thrilled audiences in the West End.

“This show is very special to me with its dizzying blend of great characters, hilarious script and sublime music”, said director Nigel Harman, who played Lord Farquaad in the West End production, winning a Laurence Olivier Award. “This production is visually stunning, and the story has the magic ingredient of moving at great pace while still being surprisingly intimate. I really can’t wait to take this show on the road!”

We caught up recently with Idriss Kargbo who plays Shrek’s wisecracking sidekick Donkey – which he claims is the best role in the whole show! He found out last November that he had the part and has been barely able to contain

himself. “I never thought I’d get it”, he told us. “I was stunned. I just dropped to the fl oor! I couldn’t wait to get started!”

Idriss admits to being the biggest musical theatre geek – it is his passion. He has been appearing on stage since the age of 10 and he just loves it. He has already been in The Lion King, The Scottsboro Boys, Thriller Live (where he played the young Michael Jackson), and he was in Oliver with Rowan Atkinson.

“Shrek is such a great show”, he tells us. “It’s not just for kids. It’s an inspiring, feel good show about accepting who you are. It’s full of heart and I guarantee everyone will leave the theatre smiling! The whole cast is so hardworking and talented and so committed – which is what makes it so fantastic.”

The show borrows many elements from the fi lm and we are told it looks incredible. Apparently, the dragon puppet is absolutely stunning!

Shrek also stars Dean Chisnall as beloved swamp-dwelling ogre ‘Shrek’, Faye Brookes as Princess Fiona, and Gerard Carey as Lord Farquaad. They will be joined by a whole host of fairytale characters

The internationally renowned baritone Roderick Williams will be the artistic director of the next Leeds Lieder+ International Festival of Song in April 2016.

This will be the fi rst time its ten year history that a singer has taken the helm. “We are delighted that Roderick Williams has accepted our invitation”, said founder Jane Anthony. “He is well-known and as a supremely accomplished baritone with great communication skills, and is also a hugely respected composer and musician with an imaginative approach to programming and a love of the experimental and new.”

“I am thrilled to have been given this opportunity to explore an aspect of Lieder singing that fascinates me - storytelling”, said Roderick. “I believe that the best communicators in song know how to employ skills that have delighted human beings since we lived in caves. I look forward to exploring story in song with international performers and experts in music as well as the spoken word.”

The biennial Leeds International Festival of Song has a proven track record of attracting the world’s fi nest singers to Leeds, discovering young talent and of exciting and innovative programmes.

Some will be surprised that a post-industrial city like Leeds has such a thriving festival of Lieder (art song), which is sometimes viewed as elitist. It is more proof that Leeds is a thriving centre of artistic excellence. The only other cities that can boast such a festival are London and Oxford. Anthony is determined to show that art song, great poetry set to great music, can be accessible to everyone.

Dawn French is currently undertaking her fi rst ever solo tour and is preparing to come to Leeds this September. The award-winning actor, best-selling novelist and all round very funny lady has written a new show based on her life and career, called ‘30 Million Minutes’ and it will be at Leeds Grand Theatre on Tuesday 2nd September.

‘30 Million Minutes’ consists of numerous delights with the odd irksome tribulation thrown in, as Dawn takes audiences through the various lessons life has taught her, and the things she knows for sure.

With a sharp eye for comic detail and a wicked ear for the absurdities of life, Dawn French of Cornwall shares how she has misguidedly spent her whole life

vigorously attempting to be a fully functioning female human.

Her extraordinary lack of willpower, combined with an enviable knack for nosey parking and showing off , has driven her to grapple with the big stuff of life in public. 30 million minutes of life in fact. That’s how long she’s been alive.

Del Verde nestles at the centre of Roundhay Park Golf Club – in fact, it is almost surrounded by the clubhouse and pro shop. But don’t think for a minute you’re not welcome! It is open to everyone and has plenty

of parking, thanks to the golf club.

The style is Mediterranean. In addition to a range of pastas and pizzas, there is an excellent set menu off ering two courses for £13.95 or three for £15.95, and, of course, a la carte and regular specials.

Run by husband and wife team Kevin and Helen Maudson, Mediterranean cooking is virtually in the blood as the wider family boasts over 30 years experience in the fi eld.

This came as no surprise as we tucked into starters of spicy Chorizo with Prawns and King Scallop and Crayfi sh Thermidor

– I’m a sucker for scallops in any form but this rich combination was so good. We followed this with Chicken Breast baked in white wine with tomatoes, olives, capers and basil (an anchovy short of a Puttanesca!). The chicken was quickly sealed then slowly baked in the sauce – so tasty. I chose a special of Salade Niçoise topped with Tuna Steak – again wonderful fresh, crisp salad with new potatoes, green beans, anchovies, olives and a perfectly cooked boiled egg. I would have preferred the tuna to have been a little pinker – but that’s just me. I understand most people like it well cooked.

It was such a nice, relaxed evening as we listened to a young singer from Leeds College of Music, and watched the golfers complete their rounds and make their way to the clubhouse. Music on Wednesday nights has become a regular feature and, thanks to the Musicians’ Booking Agency at Leeds College of Music, the variety is endless – from jazz and pop to string quartets.

Desserts beckoned…. I opted for a creamy Panna Cotta topped with lovely fresh Summer berries, while Jack took our waitress’s recommendation of ‘the best ever Sticky Toff ee Pudding’! And it was! And to think that Kevin was considering taking it off the menu as he thought it wasn’t very summery! It has to stay.

Del Verde is the perfect spot for family gatherings and celebrations as well as intimate dinners. It is relaxed and

friendly and the service is excellent. Don’t leave

it too long before you try it!

Regent Fisheries in Horsforth has maintained its excellent reputation by regaining the The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) Fish and Chip Quality Award.

NFFF, the trade body that represents the nation’s fi sh and chip shops, runs the scheme as a way of raising standards in the fi sh and chip trade and enhancing the profi le of the industry.

The scheme rewards and promotes shops that provide good quality products and high standards of hygiene, as well as friers who show a high level of competence. To qualify, each shop goes through an inspection by an NFFF assessor who assesses the shop’s presentation, hygiene, staff training, equipment, frying

and sales skills and, most importantly, the quality of the cooked product.

“We are delighted to have retained the award”, said Adrian Atter “It is a team eff ort as it includes every aspect of the business so my thanks go out to the staff for all their continued hard work in making The Regent the only shop in Horsforth to have the award. We look forward to continuing to off er our customers the fi nest fi sh and chips and the friendliest service.”

Regent Fisheries have been a fi sh and chip shop since 1925. Each NFFF Fish & Chip Quality Award is valid for two years and retention is dependent on standards being maintained as validated by NFFF.

Sun-Drenched South American Exotica at Las Iguanas

I can’t say I’m generally a fan of the chain bar-restaurant, the relentless pursuit of high-volume

sales and the ruthless corner-cutting employed to achieve this often results in a mediocre or deeply

unsatisfying experience.

However, this variety of eatery can be done well. Very well, in fact, and when it is, it looks a lot like Las Iguanas.

The Leeds restaurant, in the heart of the ‘Exchange Quarter’ next to the Corn Exchange, has been spruced up and now boasts street-side seating.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon. Our food and drinks were delivered swiftly by friendly, attentive waiting staff , indicating a slickness and effi ciency which one imagines extends to their busiest periods.

The extensive menu stops just the right side of overwhelming and makes for mouth watering reading. We decided to start with a selection of tapas - great value at £14.40 for three dishes, or fi ve for £24 before 7pm. The Albondigas, rich fl avoursome lamb meatballs, were morishly delectable, the Spectacular Fish Taco actually managed to live up to its name, with its succulent fi sh encased in crispy batter and served with a very tasty sweetcorn and chilli salsa. Rounding off our tapas triumvirate we opted for a new

addition to the menu, the Artichoke salad which had a lovely citrusy, vinaigrette tang and was a perfect palate cleanser.

Eschewing the lunch menu, we went straight for the more substantial sounding off erings, including the Extraordinary Xinxim (they do seem fond of superlatives when naming their dishes) a creamy, almost curry-ish chicken dish with a hint of surf & turf about it with crayfi sh in the sauce and an interesting mix of fl avours with its nuttiness, lime juice and a lip-smacking piquancy. While it perhaps fell a little short

of ‘extraordinary’ it was very pleasant. The Hot Guyanese Pepperpot, a rich mutton stew which, with a generous amount of orange zest and cinnamon, was a little on the sweet side for my taste, but it’s a substantial

dish packed with fl avour. As for drinks, it would have

been a wasted opportunity not to try the cocktail menu, of which Las Iguanas seem justifi ably proud. These guys really know what they’re doing

when it comes to cocktails and they don’t skimp on the measures. Our Caipirinhas were perfectly balanced with all the sweet/sour, limey-mintiness you could hope for. We followed these with a pair of rather potent but delicious Long Island Iced Teas.

Las Iguanas exceeded my expectations and I wouldn’t hesitate to return. A perfect place to while away these warm Summer evenings. Our meal for two came to approximately £50.

Sherlock World Record for Brain Research

“Sherlock may live at Baker Street, London, but according to the most influential fictional biography of Holmes by Baring-Gould, Holmes was born in Yorkshire!” explained Clair Challenor-Chadwick, Appeal Director for the new centre. “We wanted to reclaim him for Yorkshire, and he is the perfect inspiration for our appeal as the world’s brainiest detective. We’re hoping to tap into the cultural zeitgeist and popularity of Sherlock, thanks to the BBC series with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.”

It’s hoped that Sherlockians will be inspired and take part in this fundraising extravaganza to create the £2m brain research centre, a partnership between Leeds University, which has one of Europe’s largest research facilities and Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

“We are calling on collective brain power to help raise funds for this important cause!” said Clair. “If you love Sherlock you will love this family fun event. Expect special guests and some great entertainment!”

Registration is just £15. In return participants will receive a deerstalker hat, pipe and magnifying glass on the day. Prizes will be given for the best dressed Sherlock. Sherlock fans can

also enter a raffle to win goodies from the cast of Sherlock, including Benedict Cumberbatch signed photographs, Sherlock script and books. 100% of proceeds will go to the Yorkshire Brain Research Centre.

Brain disease is the biggest challenge of our generation. By 2030 there will be a 20% increase in Parkinson’s disease alone, whilst numbers of dementia patients will soar by 80%.

On Saturday 20th September, St Gemma’s Hospice will hold its first ever ‘Happy Walk’ and registration is now open.

The aim of the walk is to celebrate a loved one’s life while walking 3.5 or 5.5 miles around Roundhay Park. A number of people have already signed up their whole family – it’s a fantastic opportunity for families to get together and enjoy a walk whilst remembering and reminiscing about those special people who may have passed on recently.

The route around Roundhay Park is both pram and wheelchair friendly so you really can enter the whole family. All participants are asked to raise as much sponsorship money as possible for St Gemma’s and the wonderful work they do. It is just £5 to enter and children under 12 are free. There will be free hot drinks and cake for all walkers.

New Chairman for Leeds Community Foundation

Since its launch in 2004, LCF has distributed over £23 million in grants to local community groups who support vulnerable and disadvantaged people across the city. As philanthropy advisors, the Foundation’s role is to connect individuals and organisations that wish to invest in a better future for the city with community groups that make a real difference.

Martin takes over from Kevin O’Connor, Regional Managing Partner of Baker Tilly, who completed his term as Chairman after nine years of service as a trustee.

Martin’s career has seen him in a wide variety of roles. Having first carved out a successful career in banking, he went on to become Dean of the Faculty for Business & Law at Leeds Metropolitan University, then Head of Debt Advisory in the North for PwC. He has held numerous directorships and been appointed to various boards.

“It is a great honour to have been appointed Chairman”, said Martin. “I am extremely passionate about the Leeds region and have always been a great believer in giving something back to your local community. At a time when there is still great disparity between the wealthiest and poorest parts of our city region, I am eager to lead the team in championing the importance of philanthropy and civic enterprise.

“LCF makes a huge difference to improving the lives of local people by

connecting those who need help with the people who are willing to give. Thanks to the leadership of Kevin O’Connor, we are well placed to build on our successes, as we report another year of significant progress, having distributed over £3.1 million to over 500 community groups and charities.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of increasing the Foundation’s reputation, influence and impact in the City, enabling more donors to provide the vital support which our communities continue to need.”

On Saturday 2nd August, Hyde Park Unity Day will celebrate its 19th year!

Once again the main stage, band tent and other music tents will spring up across the park, plus, new this year, a new art and performance area.

Housing and Regeneration in Leeds

I recently attended a Housing and Regeneration Workshop looking at how to deliver the amount housing required by the Planning Inspector. Leeds aims to build 4,700 houses a year until 2017/18. A total of 26,000 plots currently have planning permission. The Council’s Site Allocations Plan needs to fi nd suitable land for a further 44,000 to meet the Core Strategy Target of 70,000. My own view, and something I am fi ghting to establish prior to

CLLR BARRYANDERSONAdel & Wharfedale Ward

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Commonwealth War Memorial at Lawnswood Cemetery and pay my respects to the fallen service men and women who are remembered there. It was a humbling and moving experience and I was fortunate to have Andrea Hetherington from the Friends of Lawnswood Cemetery to fi ll in the details about those who are buried there.

Listening to the fascinating tales behind the memorials helped me to really understand the bravery of the servicemen

and women who sacrificed their lives for our safety. We’ve recently commemorated the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, and this month we will be remembering the centenary of the outbreak of WWI.

People often think of visiting war graves in France or Belgium and forget about the many war graves here in the UK. Over 300,000 war dead are commemorated or buried in 13,000 locations across the UK. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has a responsibility for all the war graves in the UK, and they mark and maintain

graves in 150 countries, build memorials for people who have no known grave and keep records of the people who have died.

Lawnswood Cemetery has 324 casualties from both world wars, and I would urge everyone to take the time and visit the Memorial. It is important that we remember all of these individuals one hundred years on and refl ect on the impact wars have had on the city of Leeds.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintains the memorial, but it is the Friends of Lawnswood Cemetery who help to improve the cemetery as a whole by preserving the graves and promoting Lawnswood as an important historical resource for the city. They also provide guided walks and meet every month for action days.

any development, is that the required infrastructure must be in place before planning permission is granted.

There are a number of obstacles to development that need to be resolved, including the rising cost of land especially in the north of the city, the availability of skills and materials, and fi rst time buyers being unable to keep up with the buy-to-let market. It is also important to recognise that in future people may not have the same lifestyles as they do now, and this needs to be built into the design and infrastructure. For example, more people may be working from home, and adaptability needs to be designed into new homes so that people can stay in their homes into old age.

As you know, I am a proponent of ‘brownfi eld fi rst’. I would like to see incentives to developers to make building on brownfi eld more attractive, then greenfi eld sites could be spared. To make the sites more viable, decontamination work needs to be done

in some instances if previously used for heavy industry, or as petrol stations etc. so costs are higher. Perhaps some monetary help could be given to developers to make them more cost eff ective. The majority of brownfi eld sites, by their nature, also come with more inbuilt infrastructure.

If we are being serious about planned development, looking at the city as a whole, rather than piecemeal, is imperative so that developers can be matched to sites. Brownfi eld sites could be ‘pooled’ so that any development is in harmony with its surroundings and not a jigsaw of misshapes.

The most pressing need for housing is at either end of the spectrum – the older generation who want to downsize, and the younger generation wanting to get on the housing ladder. Developers need to look at their potential market now but also take future lifestyle changes into account.www.barryanderson.yourcllr.com

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Paul Mullen feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Paul is

finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Tell me a secret…Do you have a secret that you’ve

never told anyone, and if so how do you feel about sharing it with a bunch of strangers? Well that’s what MICA (Meetings in Chapel Allerton) is asking you to do at Seven Arts in Chapel Allerton from 2nd August.

MICA was set up to provide the local community with an opportunity to find some inspiration in their everyday lives by arranging for inspirational speakers from around the world to share their stories and lessons in life to help you live happier more fulfilling lives.

“We’ve had a Coronation Street actress, a multi-million selling award winning author and countless inspiring local speakers over the last year”, said founder Mike Matthews. “The talks have been quite diverse,

from inspiring stories of triumph over adversity to how to better understand your personality.”

Life Coach Mike Matthews, from Chapel Allerton, has had an interest in personal development and the importance of strong community for years, which lead him to set up MICA in February 2013.

What is unique about MICA is that they invest the proceeds in community art projects. Last year they ran a project called ‘Before I Die’ at Seven Arts in Chapel Allerton and HEART in Headingley, where people were asked to share their bucket lists on a large blackboard. It was only supposed to be live for four weeks but ended up running for over four months!

This time MICA is asking you

to tell them a secret...anonymously you’ll be glad to hear. “Secrets are private and provocative and we hold them very close to us. By doing so they often take on far greater significance than they ever should. The idea of sharing them is to realise the great benefit that letting go can have.”

Recently, there have been a number of incidents involving bogus callers posing as odd jobs men and tradesmen touting for work and trying to gain entry to properties. Often, older and more vulnerable people don’t know what to do when faced with an unwanted caller and don’t know what their rights are.

With this in mind, local PCSO Laura Bairstow has organised an event to highlight the issue of doorstep crime in the Meanwood area and off er practical advice on what to do if approached.

Several organisations will be on hand to off er advice and help, and there will also be an

opportunity to discuss funding options for home safety devices. These include: West Yorkshire Police Crime Reduction Advice Team, CASAC (Home Safety and Security), Care & Repair, Care UK, Age UK, and The SAFER Project.

Come along and access advice on all aspects of home security and help in the home, as well as Trading Standards. Then enjoy meeting other local residents over a nice cup of tea and cake!

Woodhouse Community Centre is a thriving hub, off ering a host of activities from gardening to catering, the chance to gain new skills, volunteering opportunities, and meeting spaces.

The charity Oblong took over the running of the centre from Leeds City Council in 2011, and undertook a £430,000 refurbishment. The result is a modernised building with bright open spaces, a large, high-ceilinged main hall, meeting rooms, and a garden created by volunteers.

Oblong offers numerous opportunities to volunteer and volunteers help to run the building, learning all aspects of building management, from reception and administration to health and safety. The Marketing and Media team produces everything from posters

to blog posts, and the Gardening Collective takes on projects to transform neglected areas into gardens for local residents to enjoy.

A wide range of other activities also take place at the centre, including Yoga, English and Wellbeing classes, a monthly cinema event – there has even been a wedding in the main hall!

Oblong has a flourishing community of users, many of whom have moved on into employment with the new skills and confi dence gained at the centre. With such a positive impact on people’s lives and the local environment, Woodhouse Community Centre is making a real diff erence.

Is there a Housing Need for Older Residents in Adel?An independent Housing

Needs Assessment Report has been received for the Adel Area, which makes interesting reading on the both the overall need for further development and the type of housing that should be considered.

The Conclusion states: “There are ‘approved’ or ‘under consideration’ development sites in Adel with a capacity for 440 new homes….. a further eight sites have been identified that have a capacity of close to 1,000 new homes.…. it is questionable as to whether this amount of new housing is needed to meet local needs and whether the local infrastructure is inadequate to support such a scale of additional

housing. There is evidence of housing need arising from older

single people and couples living in properties that are too large for their needs who want to downsize and release equity from their properties.”

The last point is reinforced by the Census 2011 which showed that 22% of the Adel population is aged 65 and over, compared to 15% for the Leeds area as a whole.

ARCO - Associated Retirement Community Providers- the umbrella organisation for retirement community providers, would like an indication of the support for providing a range of provision for seniors living here on approved sites. What are your views? Let us know via the addresses below.

Meanwhile, on 3rd July, Leeds City Council organised an event, attended by local schools, residents and members of the Adel Forum, to examine how educational needs can be met in Adel. “It’s important to the Council to involve the local community in shaping plans to meet the need for school places”, said Sarah

Sinclair, Chief Officer, Strategy, Commissioning & Performance. “The event has been followed up with an online discussion at http://leedsschoolplaceplanning.wordpress.com/ which will remain open until 14th August. We would encourage you to become involved.”

The interim Steering Group for Headingley Neighbourhood Plan is working with the Council and others to ensure that neighbourhood planning will be a success for Headingley. An important thread in this is our Public Engagement Programme. We aim to enable as many as possible of those who live and work in Headingley to take part in working out the Plan.

During July, several community associations involved with the Steering Group have been engaging with residents in their areas, including Ash Road, the Cardigan Triangle, the Granbys, and the Turnways. A public meeting for all residents was

also held, with input from the Council’s Neighbourhood Planning Manager and our own Community Planner.

The aim of the Plan is to promote and improve the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of Headingley. It is generally about making our Neighbourhood a more sustainable place and, more particularly, about preparing planning policies which help to do that. For instance, a key theme of the Plan will be promoting and improving our local economy. We will try to encourage the positive sides to this, like Headingley Farmers’ Market, rather than the ‘resort economy’ which has developed

over recent years. For more details, visit www.

Correction In our article last month, we stated, ‘Council officially designates Neighbourhood Plan.’ This was incorrect. At the time, the Council was still considering our application (latest details are at www.leeds.gov.uk/council/Pages/Neighbourhood-planning.aspx) Also, the Council designates only the Area and the Forum, not the Plan itself.

The holiday season has arrived, and often

we are enjoying gardens elsewhere whilst

The best

is to ask a

A vegetable plot can look stunning in August with a whole variety of delicious fresh produce to harvest.

Holiday Care for Your Garden

August is one of the main harvesting months, which is ironic as many of us are away on holiday just as our produce is ready to be picked and enjoyed. For some plants like courgettes and cucumbers, constant picking ensures a continued harvest and of course everything will need watering if weather is dry.

Clearly the best way to ensure good care for your garden while you’re away is to ask a friend or neighbour to water any pots and thirsty plants in hot weather. In exchange you can off er to do theirs

when they’re away, or you can let them have any produce that is ready.

As an alternative there are irrigation systems for all pockets, from spikes to fi t onto a plastic pop bottle (about £2.50 for four), or gravity fed kits that will water about 20 containers (around £60), through to systems with timers and sprinklers for those with larger budgets.

Moving any hanging baskets and pots to a cool place that is not under overhanging branches or roofs will certainly help too, but be careful as this can advertise your absence to thieves.

Harvest Time!

A vegetable plot can look stunning in August with a whole variety of delicious fresh produce to harvest. Beans, courgettes, carrots, chard, cabbage, garlic, cucumbers, tomatoes and potatoes and lots of other things are ready to be picked and enjoyed.

Try using your home grown herbs to make tasty oils and vinegars such as basil vinegar made by mixing 500ml white wine vinegar with 7 sprigs of basil. It’s perfect for making salad dressing.

Keep the Flowers Coming

Don’t forget to add a feed to the water once a week for your displays in containers and baskets because by now they will have used up any nutrients added at planting time.

Deadheading will prompt plants to produce more fl owers instead of putting their energy into seed production so make regular trips round your plot to snip off the fading blooms. You can

Feed Leeds, a Leeds City Council initiative, is now a network of growers and social justice groups concerned about sustainable local food and related issues. It aims to promote and support community food growing projects across the city, mainly through its website www.feedleeds.org.uk which hopes to link all the community food growing projects in the city so it’s easy for people to fi nd out more and get involved.

“Feed Leeds exists to promote and support food growing in Leeds for its economic, social, environmental and health benefits”, said Andy Goldring, Chair of Feed Leeds Committee. “It’s fantastic that groups are starting to grow food in green spaces around the city. It helps to build community relationships and sends a powerful message

about access to fresh, local, tasty food.”

Kirkstall Community Garden ([email protected]) is a Feed Leeds associate – they have created a community garden in the Church Lane Allotments where members can learn new skills, share ideas and grow their own food. The group is also creating open growing space where people are invited to plant and share the food grown.

H e a d i n g l e y Community Orchards started at St Chad’s in Far Headingley, and has now expanded to include St Chad’s War Memorial, Shire Oak Primary School and behind the Natural Food Store. The fi rst fruit was harvested at the school last Autumn and the children got to enjoy their own apples with their school dinner.

The group is currently working with Woodhouse Ridge Action Group and hopes to plant up a new site close to Meanwood Beck.

There are 130 allotments on the Gledhow Valley Allotments site in Chapel Allerton, making it one of the largest sites in Leeds. Many are split into half or quarter plots, which is probably enough for people who are working or who have other commitments. The plot holders are a very diverse crowd – growing your own has attracted a whole new

breed of gardeners in the last ten years.

The allotments are managed by Chapel Allerton Allotments and Gardens Association (CAAGA), who also put on three shows a year and organise talks and trips to local gardens, together with an annual visit to Harlow Carr, bonfi re night and BBQ, and they are involved with Chapel Allerton Festival.

They have their own distribution centre where they sell plants, compost, seeds,

In Leeds there has been a huge upsurge of interest in food sustainability, with a number of community organisations throwing themselves enthusiastically into growing something wherever there is a spare plot of land.

CAAGA currently has a waiting list of about 30. Visit www.caaga.org.uk for more information, or follow them on twitter @caagaallotments. You can also become a member without an allotment, for just £3 a year.

REAP (Roundhay Environmental Action Project) Gardening Group is encouraging local residents to grow and harvest fruit and vegetables in two community edible beds. The bed at Oakwood Clock is now in its second season. Spectacular globe artichokes and beautiful bronze fennel plants stand out with lots of peas, beans, leeks, onions, salad crops and rainbow chard ready for harvest. Fruit lovers can pick rhubarb and strawberries and there are always lots of herbs.

Colourful information signs show which crops are ready to pick and which need to be left for a little longer. Members work on the bed during each Farmers’ Market (3rd Saturday) and welcome help from the community. There are usually activities for children, to encourage them to grow their own from an early age. In June, young gardeners planted radish seeds to take home and made ‘eggheads’ with

cress seeds and eggshells. This year the Gardening

Group is also helping the Friends of Allerton Grange Fields to develop a community orchard and edible beds. The fi rst fruit trees have been planted, together with broad beans, kale, potatoes, lettuce, purple sprouting broccoli and other crops.

Vo l u n t e e r s f r o m FoAGF, REAP and the Police Community Support Officers from Roundhay Neighbourhood Policing Team all helped with the planting.

Once again the aim is to encourage healthy eating, providing local people with an opportunity to pick free fruit and support a diverse range of wildlife.

It still provides the same service, with high quality composts, fertilizers and everything needed to achieve a successful garden or allotment. Membership is only £1 per year and, as a fount of all knowledge and experience, anyone with a problem leaves happy with the correct advice and appropriate product.

HAGA has also been involved with local schools, supplying seeds and compost and talking to the children. At Newlaithes Primary the children recently planted sunflowers, sweetcorn, potatoes, lettuce, radish, hollyhocks and poppies.

HAGA, located at the top of Featherbank Lane, near the junction with the Ring Road, is open 7 – 8pm on Fridays. For further information, visit

Meanwood Parkside Road Allotments have a beautifully kept site at the top of Meanwood and they have been going strong since 1877! There are 47 plots which are all fl ourishing, and more than 80 impatient people on their waiting list!

The association is holding its annual Flower and Vegetable Show at Meanwood Parish Church Hall on Sunday 24th August, 2.15pm - 4pm (admission £1, children free). The show is in its 14th year and, as usual, all profi ts will be donated to its adopted charity, which is Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Alliance this year. They hope to raise £2,000. In addition to the fruit, fl ower and vegetable exhibits, there will be a jazz group, tombola, a sale of home-baking, jams and pickles and an auction of allotment produce.

48 Sound & Vision

King of the Mountains Festival

Nestled in a breathtakingly beautiful valley at the foot of Buttertubs Pass, the site was ideal and the weekend featured an impressive array of musical talent both local and from further afield.

As is usually the case with festivals, I didn’t manage to catch as much live music as I would have liked, but there were notable highlights among those I did see. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the acts scheduled to play as the race went by as they likely played to a virtually deserted site as everyone took to the roadside to cheer on the riders.

After the Tour action, we secured a spot in front of the main stage and were entertained by Goodbye Channel’s shimmery, sparkling pop confections. A pleasing mid-tempo set that frequently soared.

The pace was picked up somewhat by Young Rebel Set whose choppy guitars and Hammond organ suggested something of a Merseybeat vibe and brought to

mind more recent scouse-rockers such as The Coral.

Next up were Post War Glamour Girls, an act I was intrigued to see as they seem to be generating something of a buzz, and I must say I was pretty impressed. Sporting jagged, spikey post-punk riffage with toothsome guitar sounds and menacingly melodic basslines, to my mind they drew a host of favourable comparisons; Nirvana, Wire, Modest Mouse, Gang of Four, a vocal style pitched somewhere between Ian Curtis and Mark E. Smith. But perhaps the most obvious reference point would be Pixies and I believe the band has performed as a tribute act to Frank Black et al. For all that, however, Post War Glamour Girls don’t come across as too derivative, there’s a freshness and originality to the arrangements and the songs are lyrically unpredictable. Certainly a band I’ll be checking out again.

I was lucky enough to catch a set by utterly charming folk-pop whippersnappers, Jacobean Ruff.

Although missing a couple of members from their usual line up, they gave a spirited performance, distinguished by stunning vocal work and spot on acoustic instrumentation. I was well and truly won over as the set included both a hauntingly dreamy song inspired by Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are and an impressively faithful rendition of Led Zeppelin’s Going to California. I mean, what’s not to like?

Obviously, this represents barely a fraction of the splendid music of the weekend. You can explore the festival’s musical line-up further at their website, (kingofthemountainsfestival.com) and I urge everyone to follow them on Twitter (@KOTMFESTIVAL) and offer support and encouragement so we can have this wonderful little festival to look forward to as an annual treat.

Long may the King of the Mountain reign!

This hastily arranged festival, created to tie in with

the Tour de France Grand Depart celebrations, was a

resounding success and I sincerely hope it becomes a

regular fixture on the festival calendar.

From the outset he has shown himself as comfortable and adroit with the experimental (his breakthrough film, Slacker, the trippy rotoscope animation of Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly) as with crowd pleasing mainstream features (Dazed and Confused, School of Rock, the Before…trilogy).

You’ll likely have already heard glowing praise for his latest work, Boyhood, and you should be prepared to hear a lot more. This remarkable film is the culmination of an outrageously ambitious project that has finally, brilliantly come to fruition.

Shot, using the same cast, over 12 years, Boyhood follows Mason Jr’s (Ellar Coltrane) growth from a young boy, picking up when he’s around six years old, through adolescence to his emergence as a young man as he begins college. The leaps forward in time occur unannounced and flow seamlessly together as we watch Mason gradually mature.

Though this is Mason’s

story, his character is the film’s central focus, we accompany him through familiar rites of passage and we view events through the prism of his experience, the film is bigger than and about so much more than just him. Boyhood is also an exploration of the family dynamic and the lives of those around Mason. We see his sister, Sam (played by Linklater’s daughter) grow and

over time forge her own distinct identity. We bear witness to his mum’s struggles with the pressures and challenges of single motherhood and failed relationships with abusive partners (absolutely outstanding work here by Patricia Arquette) and Ethan Hawke’s estranged, freewheeling cool dad embrace the responsibilities of fatherhood and get his life together.

The film feels much like a family photo-album come to life and is an immersive, involving and affecting experience. Nothing here seems forced or contrived, it feels just as if you’re observing life presented simply and honestly. This is achieved through the note-perfect performances of the cast and Linklater’s deft direction and sympathy and compassion for his main characters.

What gives Boyhood its poignancy and an almost eerie quality is how it shows the actual transition from boy to man but on a timeline that is contracted, condensed to a few hours. In doing so it reminds us how quickly our growth and maturity develop, especially in our younger years, and how

short life really is. It would be interesting to know if the film’s impact, and what people take away from it, varies greatly between those who have children and those without. In a way I feel the film allows one to experience elements of parenthood vicariously while at the same time inducing a powerful s e n s e o f nostalgia for one’s own youth.

Boyhood is so well made, beautifully acted and handled with such a lightness of touch that considerations of the logistical complications of its making hardly enter one’s mind while watching it. Not to mention

the confidence, optimism and commitment required for such a project from the outset. Twelve years is quite a chunk of time, after all, and any number of unforeseen occurrences could

have derailed the entire shoot.

Fiddle Group Stages Concert for Parkinsons UKLeeds Folk Fiddle Group,

together with other music students, recently performed a concert at the Yorkshire College of Music and Drama, in aid of the Leeds branch of Parkinsons UK.

The concert was in memory of former student, Jonathan Stevens, who was diagnosed with Parkinsons and died unexpectedly last December at the age of only 34. Andy Bell, chairman for the charity in Leeds, gave an inspirational talk about the illness and the charity’s mission.

Students, teachers and a team of helpers worked tirelessly to make the event a success and they managed to raise £155 for Parkinsons UK.

Cycling? Get Your Position Right!

The Grand Depart gave cycling in Yorkshire a fantastic

boost! Leeds already had numerous cycling clubs, teams

and individuals on its roads, but having the world’s

biggest bike race start from outside the Town Hall has

attracted even more riders to our roads.

As a physiotherapist (and being married to a cycling fanatic), I have met many cyclists who ride and race at all levels. I know people in their 70s who still train daily and race every week, as well as children competing locally.

Cycling is a great way of getting and keeping fit, even if you don’t want to compete or train hard. Like any form of exercise there are precautions you should take and things you need to be aware of.

For example, a rider’s position is of paramount importance – for speed, ease, and very importantly, for the sake of your body. Regardless of the style of bike and the material it is made of, you need to ride in the correct position.

At North Leeds Physiotherapy I offer what’s called a ‘Bike Fit’ for cyclists, both new and seasoned. Bike Fit is tailored to you to ensure you’re sitting correctly and to help prevent injury and discomfort. Of course, if you are training hard, competing, are new to it or new to exercise in general, I’m here for any discomfort that might ensue!

Exercise is great for the body – for losing weight, building strength and keeping mobile as you age, but there is no hiding the fact that sometimes it hurts. Don’t let this put you off. Physiotherapy will help you get started properly and also aid healing. And remember - it’s never too late to start.

The trio is using the race to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, which provided care to Simon and Greg’s brother, Nick, who passed away in 2007 from throat cancer.

They will be pedaling alongside the likes of Question of Sport captain Matt Dawson; Winter Olympics skeleton gold medallist Amy Williams; Cowboy Builders presenter Dominic Littlewood; celebrity chef Jean-Christophe

Novelli; and former British World Cup alpine ski racer Chemmy Alcott.

Paul, who rides for a local cycle club, is hoping to better his top 50th finish in last year’s inaugural event that netted more than £3.5m for charity.

“Raising money to thank those who cared for Nick is the inspiration behind taking part in this amazing festival of cycling”, said Paul. “Thanks to the Tour de France, and Yorkshire’s hosting of le Grand Depart, it has once again captured the public’s imagination and is being staged on a far bigger scale this year.”

To support Paul, donations can be made via ‘Paul’s Page” at www.justgiving.com

It’s been quite a year so far for Matty Lee (16) from Chapel Allerton, who dives for City of Leeds Diving Club and Great Britain. Not only is he is a Junior European double champion, but he was also runner up in the Leeds Sports awards for Young Sportsman of the Year, and a winner in the Young Team category along with his diving team mates for their performance at the Junior Europeans in Poznan, Poland.

In the British Gas National Cup in January (a senior competition) he came third behind Tom Daley in the individual 10m event, just missing out on Silver. In the 10m synchro event, Matty and his partner lead the competition with a whole dive.

On the strength of his individual

and synchro performance Matty was catapulted on to the world diving stage to take part in the FINA Diving World Series (second only to the World Championships). This consisted of a number legs in diff erent locations around the world. The fi rst was held in Beijing where Matty and his synchro diving partner (Dan Goodfellow from Plymouth) unexpectedly came away with a bronze medal. They went mainly to experience the senior world stage - both of them still being junior divers. They took another bronze medal in Dubai.

In the third leg in London they couldn’t quite get into the medals, but they beat their personal best score. “Competing in London was one of the best experiences I‘ve ever had”, said Matty, “being in front of that home crowd cheering you on is something I’ll never forget!”

The fi nal leg was in Moscow – no medals but another great performance. To come back with two medals from the fi rst outing on the world stage is quite an achievement.

On the strength of his performance at the World Series Matty was selected to join Team England to compete at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The national charity ‘Join In’ recently launched a group of Local Leaders in the Yorskhire area.

Join in emerged out of the London 2012 volunteering legacy and helps UK grassroots sports clubs to attract more supporters and volunteers from their communities by matching people to fun, interesting and rewarding volunteering opportunities at clubs in their area.

Local leaders, or JILLs, are encouraging people to volunteer in sport, through volunteering themselves at the Tour de France, park run and all sorts of local sporting events, and sport

event organisers and sports clubs are urged to get in touch and register with them so that they can fi nd volunteers for them too.

If you would like to become involved with volunteering in sport, please get in touch with your most local ‘JILL’, Jill Buckley (yes she really is called Jill!), and let her know what you would like to do, or what you need for your club or event.

For more information, visit the national website at www.joininuk.org/ or fi nd them on Facebook at Join In Yorkshire, on Twitter @JoinInWY, or email Jill at [email protected]

A new choir giving adults with neurological

conditions the chance to discover their voices was

launched recently by Leeds Community Healthcare

NHS Trust.

Working in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society, Parkinson’s UK, Carers Leeds, Multiple Sclerosis Society and Arts@Trinity, the Trust is inviting patients and their carers to join the weekly group and sing songs that everyone will enjoy.

“I decided to set up the choir because many people I work with were asking whether one existed for people with neurological conditions”, said Wendy Neill, speech and language therapist at Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust. “I am passionate about giving people ‘a voice’, and an opportunity to meet new people in a fun, friendly environment. Many of the people I work with are older and don’t get many opportunities to socialise. It will also give their carers a welcome break and an opportunity to access support

from others in the group.”Members don’t need to have

any experience, just a passion for singing and enthusiasm to be part of this inclusive choir. Percussion instruments will be available for those preferring to use these as their musical vehicle.

The group is free to attend and meets every Tuesday from 6.30 – 8pm at Holy Trinity Church on Boar Lane. For further information, contact 0113 220 8528 or [email protected]

Littler, Russell Fox and Phil Dixon recently started a new supporters’ group for Leeds Rhinos – LS16 Rhinos.

One of their main aims is to provide a meeting place to discuss all things to do with Rugby League - especailly Leeds Rhinos. They intend to hold occasional meetings on Monday nights at the Lawnswood Arms on Otley Road. Over 80 people attended their fi rst meeting, and Leeds Rhino star, centre Joel Moon, was on hand to take part in a special Q&A..

LS16 Rhinos also recently organised a minibus to a match in Warrington and will definitely be running other trips over the Pennines.

Leeds Athletic Netball Club Juniors are celebrating

their most successful season ever!

At the recent National Club Finals, the U-16 team, coached by former Wales international Jo Davies, achieved 4th place, losing by only one goal in the 3rd/4th play-off against Sutton Royals.

“Playing netball for Leeds Athletic gives me the opportunity to have fun, keep fit and meet new people in a fiercely competitive environment”, said Captain Lucy Lister, who has been playing for Leeds Athletic since she was eight years old. “It’s a game I intend to play for the rest of my life!”

Coached by John Hipshon, the U-14s finished a creditable sixth. The U-12 team, coached by Beccy Lewis, demonstrated their potential to follow in the older players’ footsteps at the Yorkshire Festival, when the first team collected the winners’ trophy.

“It has been a proud few weeks for Leeds Athletic”, said

Head Coach, Anna Carter, who is also head coach of Yorkshire Jets Superleague netball team. “Both players and coaches have worked incredibly hard all season and their success is well deserved. It is wonderful to see girls having so much fun whilst progressing with such enthusiasm on the netball court.”

Tackling Prostate Cancer Inequalities

On average, 461 of men in Leeds are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year and 117 die from the disease. Despite being the most common cancer in men, those affected or at risk of the disease continue to face a number of injustices, particularly when it comes to awareness of risk and access to treatments, information and support.

Prostate Cancer UK has launched a report outlining the five key injustices and is calling on the government to tackle the inequalities around awareness, age and ethnicity, and ensure that all men have access to the best possible treatments and information.

“Prostate cancer kills one man every hour but men continue to face an uphill struggle on a number of fronts”, said Greg Mulholland at a recent campaigning event. “I want to ensure that all men in Leeds North West are armed with the knowledge of their risk of prostate cancer, and that those living with it have everything they need to tackle the disease head on.”

The report is part of the charity’s Men United campaign has seen nearly 200,000 people sign up to join the fight against the disease.

Tour de Froebelian! At the Froebelian School in Horsforth, the Years 4,

5 and 6 pupils were so excited about the Tour de

France in Yorkshire that they decided to hold an

event of their own – Tour de Froebelian!

The children spent the morning with former national cycling champion Chris Young and cycling coaches Mike Healey and Peter Charlton, at the Richard Dunn cycling track in Bradford. They received coaching in hill climbs, sprints and cornering on hairpin bends, then all took part in timed events in the afternoon.

At the end of the day the winners were presented with coloured jerseys – Lucien was

awarded the Yellow Jersey for being the leader throughout; Isabel won Green for the sprint, and Olivia won the Red and White Polka dot for the hill climb. James Unsworth won the White and Red for being the most aggressive rider, Seb and George took the White Jersey for best youngest riders and Jessica the Pink for being the best female rider.

Froebelian star reporters Holly and Ella acted as newsreaders and interviewed children and members of staff about the day’s events. said

“All the children had a fantastic day”, said Miss Suggitt, Year 2 and PE teacher. “Our thanks go to the coaches and one of our parents, Mr Cuming, who helped to organise the event.”

Inspired by the courage shown by a classmate with Cancer, twelve Richmond House School pupils, aged from three to 11, took part in a 43 mile Mountain to Coast bike ride in torrential rain to raise money for Children with Cancer UK.

Twenty nine people in all took part – 12 pupils, 12 parents and a support crew of five. The mile ride started at Old Parkhead Station on Stanhope Moor, 1,500ft above sea level, and finished at Crusoe’s on Tynemouth Beach.

The route mainly followed the path of an old disused railway line, which closed in 1963 and is predominantly off road.

The atrocious weather conditions tested the youngsters to the limit but they were determined to get to the finish line. One child was heard to say: “I would give up now and go on the minibus is it wasn’t for my sponsorship money and for the children with cancer.”

“The distance these young children travelled is in itself a major achievement, but the more outstanding achievement is that they never lost sight, of what was driving them to finish this challenge” said Mike Winterhalder, parent and organiser. “The conditions which they endured to finish this challenge, spurred on by their classmate’s ordeal, is the most amazing factor.”

Over £1,700 has been raised so far and the Richmond Riders are hoping to exceed their £2,000 target.

Keen geographers from local high schools came

together for a day to use the latest technology for

researching a topic close to their hearts – where to

find the best mobile signal.

The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) recently hosted the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) workshop for Year 8 pupils, following the introduction of GIS into the Key Stage 3 curriculum this year. Pupils from Harrogate Grammar School, Allerton High School, Roundhay School and The Farnley Academy all took part.

Unusually for a school day, the pupils were instructed to have their mobile phones switched on and to hand. They walked around the GSAL campus noting the strength of the signal for the different mobile networks at specific locations, before using GIS software in the IT suite to map their findings and analyse what might be causing the variations.

The session was led by Mark Smith, GSAL’s head of biology, and Steve Dunn, teacher of geography, who coordinate the GIS project at GSAL.

Mark said: “We chose to map mobile phone signals for our GIS activity as it’s a real life concern for the pupils. They respond well to learning methods that make use of technology and enjoy seeing the subject matter brought to life with the help of GIS. With GIS new to the KS3 curriculum we intended the day to be a learning opportunity for teachers and pupils alike.”

Steven Ashford, geography teacher at The Farnley Academy, said: “This is a great opportunity to see how GIS is used in a different school and share ideas, now that we are trying to embed it into the curriculum from year 7. KS3 are so good with computers that they take to GIS easily.”

GSAL is designated a ‘Centre of Excellence’ by the UK’s leading provider of GIS, ESRI UK, in recognition of the school’s innovation and expertise in the use of GIS technology.

Wood

Ireland Wood Primary launched their new cycle track, designed to be used also by adaptive bikes, scooters and wheelchairs, on 3rd July – just in time for the Grand Depart! They also invited Iveson, Cookridge, Holy Name, Bramhope and Rawdon Littlemoor primary schools to join them and celebrate this great cycling event and to take part in a cycling ‘time trial’ competition. And, Ralph Thoresby High School’s sport ambassadors did a great job of marshaling the route.

David Stone, Paralympian Gold Medal winner, and Greg Mulholland MP cut the ribbon to start the celebrations. Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, made a special appearance and loved talking to the children between the races. And, Keith Senior of Leeds Rhinos was on hand to present medals to the winning athletes.

The children ended the day with a superb performance of Yorkshire’s official Tour de France song ‘The Road’.

Lawnswood Hosts Sports Festival for Local Primary Schools

Lawnswood School recently hosted a fantastic sports festival for Key Stage 2 pupils from local primary schools at Leeds Met sports facility, Beckett’s Park.

The children received coaching in long jump, discus, javelin, shot-put and high jump. For some it was their first opportunity to race on a professional track. Lawnswood Sixth Form students were also put through their paces and showed off their skills in field events.

Special guests were on hand to add to the occasion, including Leeds Rhinos star Ian Kirke and the Rhinos’ and LUFC mascots Kop Cat and Ronnie the Rhino. A

special mascot race crowned Kop Cat as the sprint champion!

The participating schools were: St Chads,

Springbank, Weetwood, Ireland Wood, Kirkstall St Stephens, Iveson, Hawksworth Wood, and Shire Oak. The winning school was Kirkstall St Stephens, followed by Shire Oak and Weetwood Primary. All children were presented with certificates and a specially designed Sports Festival drinking bottle as a memento of a fantastic event.

Lawnswood School is committed to working in the local community, supported by Friends of Lawnswood School Association. Their next major collaboration will be the annual Art & Design Exhibition in October.

Thinking of Selling? Considering Letting?

Cardinal Heenan Celebrates Good Inspection Report

Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School recently received a ‘good’ rating after a two day Ofsted inspection early in June. Inspectors said that standards at the school ‘are high across a wide range of subjects’ and that ‘the majority of students make good progress’.

Over 900 pupils aged 11 to 16 attend the oversubscribed school in Meanwood. Last year 71% passed fi ve or more GCSEs at grades A* to C, including English and mathematics and inspectors commented that ‘current Year 10 and 11 students are confi dently set at least to match the same high standards’.

The report praises the school’s leaders for their ‘relentless focus on teaching, resulting in higher standards and faster progress’. And, the school’s work to keep children safe is described as outstanding.

Head teacher, Elizabeth Cox, said ‘I am very pleased that the report congratulates our pupils on their high achievement in English, mathematics, religious education, languages, geography and history.’

The school was applauded for its ‘strong focus on academic subjects’…. ‘Over double the average proportion of students are successful in achieving

the English Baccalaureate (GCSEs at grades C and above in English, mathematics, science, a language and a humanities subject)’.

David Murray, chair of governors at the school, said: “The inspection team recognised signifi cant recent improvements and approved our plans to raise standards even further. They highlight many outstanding aspects of Cardinal Heenan in the report. I am proud to be a governor of this successful school.”
