2. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR VETERANS, PRESENTATION
BY COMMISSIONER CHRIS BROWN
See Attachment A.
Chairman Woodruff: Thank you for your presentation. Are there any questions from the commission?
Vice Chairman Cherchio: I would also like to thank the commissioner for his presentation. It was very educational for me as well.
Chairman Woodruff: Before I ask my questions I am glad to see Doris here this evening. This presentation was generated by your question of last month, “What is available to our veterans?” Education to us is first and foremost because I believe, without education, it is very difficult for our veterans to move forward.
I have six questions. As you talk about counselors meeting with veterans to discuss their benefits, is this true of all colleges?
Commissioner Brown: Not necessarily to discuss what benefits they’re eligible for. When I talk about counselor, counselor in a college context is different than what some people think. We have academic counselors to help students with degree plans. Then we have actual counselors to talk about personal issues. There are veterans service counselors at colleges to help students through the process and explains educational benefits available with your program.
Chairman Woodruff: Does CSN provided scholarships for veterans dependent?
City of North Las Vegas Veterans Community Commission Page 3 August 14, 2014
Commissioner Brown: We do not provide any veteran dependent specific programs. One of the things in our scholarship component is the Pat Tillman Foundation that provides scholarships to veterans as well as their dependents.
Chairman Woodruff: You also mentioned having a job fair at Starbucks. For the information of those of you in the audience. When you see this information on TV or you hunt it down online. There are many job fairs in the local rea. You must be aggressively hunting for job fairs and there are many that are for veterans specifically.
How long does it take to get from step 1 to step 5 on your Admissions slide. The amount of time you meet with a counselor to the time you get your program set up?
Commissioner Brown: It depends, maybe about two weeks. For example, 24/48 hours after you complete the application you would get an acceptance letter and a NCID number. If a student has already taken the ACT or the SAT and their scores are high enough those students can automatically move forward to the next step. If a student has to test then that may make the process take a bit longer. I always encourage students to prep before taking the test. If they don’t do well then they do remedial classes. In short it would take 2 – 4 weeks depending on the individual.
Chairman Woodruff: Does CSN accept the Millennium Scholarship?
Commissioner Brown: Of course we do. If you have a 3.25 high school GPA and complete 4 units of English, 3 units of math to include algebra II, 4 units of social science, etc. It takes a discount off of college tuition.
Chairman Woodruff: Does CSN provide courses on line towards graduation?
Commissioner Brown: Yes we offer complete degree programs online. Depending on the program, some may require students to come in for hands on training. Some are hybrid. Online and in person.
Chairman Woodruff: Thank you again for your presentation. I had a unique conversation with Debbie Johnson. I just want to say to the people that are here at the meeting this evening. Non one is going to come to you and give you anything. No one is going to knock on your day and tell you what is available to you. You have to go out and look for opportunities. Not just at CSN. If you’re seeking a job or VA housing. Please tell your friends to go to school to get educated. To assist veterans in helping themselves.

BOARD ITEMS
3. NOVEMBER 13TH VETERANS COMMISSION MEETING, CELEBRATE VETERANS DAY BY WEARING ACTIVE DUTY UNIFORM, IF ABLE, AND ENJOY CAKE AFTER THE MEETING.
Commissioner Brown: I was at a function a couple of weeks ago and I thought that this group might be beneficial to speak to our commission. The young lady was from Davis Funeral Home and she talked about how many veterans have a misconception that the VA is going to cover funeral costs. She spoke about how many families of veterans are unprepared and she discussed how you can offset costs of funeral services. Is that something that the commission would be interested in entertaining? Chairman Woodruff: That is a great point. When I came out of Desert Shield and Desert Storm I was stationed in Las Vegas as the INI First Sergeant. That’s the inspector instructor staff where I handled all the burials for any marine that served active duty and received an honorable discharge. A lot of the times the families do not know who to turn to. Regardless of what branch you serve, as long as you are honorably discharged, you are entitled to have full military honors at your grave site. Whether you serve 2 years or 30 years. When you call to the Army or Marine INI and you get a lot of pushback or static. If you have any issues at all with getting a military funeral from the service you were in, please call me. Vice Chairman Cherchio: I would very much support having that information brought to the commission and the attendees. Let me again thank Commissioner Brown for his presentation. One question I do have. I know people that took the time to come out from as far away as Henderson. How do we get this information shared with the community? How do we get information in the future out to the general public? I know we spoke of a link on our city website. Do we know where we are on that as this point? Secretary Bradshaw: I can speak for the web site. I know we are undergoing a redesign at this time and we will have pages dedicated to our City boards and other non-profits so information will be posted for the community.

Commissioner Brown: One of the new changes to NV Open Meeting Law is that agendas are required to be posted on https://notice.nv.gov/ which is a good place to refer persons to.
