The 1963 Outlook“We should play better baseball this year, and I think

more speed and a tighter defense will make the differ-ence,” said Vic Sorrel].Sophomores from last year’s freshman Big Four cham-

pionship team are counted on to move into prominentpositions in 1963. The Wolfpack lost four standouts 1nall-ACC shortstop Wayne Edwards, all-ACC pitcher BobConner, catcher George Hayworth, and third basemanVernon Strickland.“We don’t have a Conner, but I believe we have a

number of good pitchers who’ll give us a balanced pitch-ing stall,” says Sorrel].George Allen and Johnny Boughan are seniors counted

on to do a lot of pitching. Top performances are alsoexpected from sophomores Bob Johnson, Ray Barlow andFrank Perkinson, along with Louisburg Jr. College gradu-ate Walt Brown. Perkinson is the only left-hander.There are unsettled positions in the infield, but first

base and second base should be strong with Don Mont-gomery at first, and prized soph Pete Parham at second.Tom Hines, a second baseman in 1962, is in contention

with senior Les Young and sophomore Gary Hale atthird base. Shortstop is open with Allan Baker, a reservelast year, and Larry Clary, a junior college all-Americaoutfielder at Louisburg in 1962, the top choices.Sophomore Jimmy Cutts, Young, a right-fielder in 1962,

and Jim Rossi are the catching candidates. There is more depth and defensive ability in the out-

field as juniors Warren Lineberger, Ron Erb and JimmyKirkman return after letter-winning years. SophomoresJohn Arganbright and Dave Morgan rate highly. Clarywill also see duty in centerfield.

Overall the outlook indicates improvement with betterhitting, speed and bench strength.

Vic Sorrel]Head Coach of Baseball

One of the finest and most respected gentlemen inintercollegiate athletics is Vic Sorrel], North CarolinaState baseball coach. The former major leaguer is nowin his 18th season as Wolfpack baseball coach and hasthe longest tenure of any coach at State College. His Wolfpack teams have won 183 games and lost 127

with one tie in 17 previous seasons. Under Sorrel] 29players have gained all-conference honors, with threenamed all-Americas.

Besides coaching baseball, Sorrel] is assistant to Athle-tics Director Roy Clogston.

Sorrel] was with the Detroit Tigers of the AmericanLeague for nine years and won 92 games and lost 101.His best season with the Tigers was in 1930 when hehad a 16-11 record.

Vic, a native of Morrisville, N. C., played high schoolball at Cary and Clayton, before enrolling at Wake ForestCollege in 1924. In his junior year he had an 8-0 recordfor the Deacons, and was signed to a Detroit contract in1926. His first pro assignment was with Toronto of theInternational League where he had an 8-0 record as arookie. His 14-7 record the following year at Toronto earn-ed him a berth with the Tigers in 1928. He played on theAmerican League championship teams of 1934 and 1935,and Vic calls his biggest thrill in baseball the Tigers’World Series victory of 1935.

Vic was sent to Toledo in 1938. He managed at Blue-field, W. Va., in 1939 and 1940, with the 1939 team win-ning the league’s pennant. He retired from pro baseballin 1940 to enter defense work at the Wilmington Ship-yards, where he stayed until 1945.
