THE WEEKLY RUGBYOVAL

Rupert Moon resignation - WRU Chief makes shockannouncement at North Wales meetingRGC’s Rupert Moon has resigned from his position to move to pastures new and will complete his contract within the next two weeks.

WRU Chief Executive, Martyn Phillips, shocked the North Wales rugby fraternity tonight at the NWRU Council meet-ing when he announced that Rupert Moon had tendered his resignation and would be leaving the Region in the next couple of weeks. Martyn publicly thanked Rupert for all his tremendous hard work during his time in North Wales and stated that it was hoped that a replacement for Rupert could be found by the end of the season. Phil Davies would continue in his current role.

Alwyn Jones, North Wales’ elected member on the WRU Board stated: ‘It is no coincidence that the profile of the game in North Wales has increased dramatically in the time that Rupert has been with us. He will be a hard act to follow and, on behalf of all those involved in rugby in North and Mid Wales, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Rupert and wish him well for the future’.

Wales are outright leaders of the Under-20 Six Nations table after a brilliant home win over France at Parc Eirias on Satur-day night.

It was a third straight victory for the Welsh with kicker Billy McBryde the key man, just as he was at Colwyn Bay two weeks earlier when he landed the winning penalty against Scotland.

Wales now head to Ashton Gate to face England in a Triple Crown showdown on March 11 with a possible first Grand Slam at this age group in their sights.

Saturday’s tussle at Eirias featured two teams which had won both their opening fixtures.

The French cause was hin-dered by a red card for wing Gabriel N’Gandebe after 56 minutes following a reckless challenge with his feet on Wales’ RGC full-back Rhun Williams as he chased a kick ahead.

That earned him a second yel-low card and left the visitors a man short for the final 24 minutes. Moments later man of the match McBryde kicked his third penalty and Wales had their noses in front at 9-7.

The first half had seen France dominate the early exchanges

and try to out-muscle the home side.

But the Welsh pack were having nothing of it and they secured two scrum penalties which McBryde kicked to build a six-point lead at the break.

However, France came racing out of the blocks at the start of the second period.

Some solid approach work from the forwards left Wales short-handed on their right and Biarritz centre Alex Arrate was able to cross on the over-lap for a try which Anthony Belleau converted.

The Welsh defence, led by inspirational skipper Tom Phil-lips, kept chopping down the

French attackers and it was a midfield raid by the centre pairing Harri Millard and Joe Thomas that paved the way for McBryde’s third penalty just short of the hour.

Back came the French with an-other Belleau penalty to regain the lead, but then McBryde launched a move from just in front of his own posts that enabled Keelan Giles to speed up the left wing out of his 22 to maximise the space left by the red card shown to his op-posite number.

Harrison Keddie was up in sup-port when he was cut down 30 metres out and eventu-ally it was left to replacement prop Leon Brown to throw the try-scoring pass to right wing George Gasson to complete an 80-metre score.

It was a sensational effort which McBryde improved to open up a six-point gap.

The fly-half had a chance to drive a final nail in the French coffin with a 75th minute pen-alty, but this time he was wide.

It did not matter, though, as Wales held on for a famous win.

Wales Under 20: Rhun Wil-liams (RGC); George Gasson (Dragons), Joe Thomas (Os-preys), Harri Millard (Cardiff Blues), Keelan Giles (Ospreys); Billy McBryde (Scarlets), Reuben Morgan-Williams (Os-preys); Corey Domachowski (Cardiff Blues), Dafydd Hughes (Scarlets), Dillon Lewis (Cardiff Blues), Shane Lewis-Hughes (Cardiff Blues), Adam Beard (Ospreys), Tom Phillips (cap-tain, Scarlets), Shaun Evans (Scarlets), Harrison Keddie (Newport Gwent Dragons).

RGC 1404 19 v Carmarthen Quins 25Following report kindly supplied by the North Wales Daily Post.

It was a case of so near and yet so far for RGC as they exited the SSE Swalec Cup at the hands of Principality Premiership side Carmarthen at Colwyn Bay. Saturday’s quarter-final tie at Brookfield Drive saw the Champi-onship hosts push their opponents all the way only to fall just short at the final hurdle.

RGC had caused a sensation by knocking out Premiership outfit Aberavon in the previous round, but there was to be no double giant-killing for the Gogs.

The visitors ran in three tries with fly-half Craig Evans kicking two conversions and two penalties to put away their Championship opposition.

There was barely a score in it for much of the game as both sides traded the lead. RGC opened the scoring with an opportunist try after a quick turnover sent the ball across the park to wing Tiaan Loots, scorer of the key touchdown against Aberavon,

Loots evaded one tackler and crashed through another three to score, but James Lang’s conversion sailed wide.

Carmarthen were rewarded for their long spell of pressure with a try under the sticks for centre and North Walian Iolo Wyn Evans, converted by Craig Evans.

And Quins put themselves further ahead with a try in the corner for wing Lee Williams just before half time.

RGC hit back immediately after the restart with a try from Evan Yardley, this time converted successfully by Lang.

The hosts had a chance to edge themselves in front but Lang’s penalty kick hit the post.

Afon Bagshaw burst through midfield for a certain try after a battle at the 10-metre line, but play was called back for a scrum near halfway.

The visitors put themselves in front with a penalty from Evans to make it 15-12, but RGC full-back Bagshaw crossed the white-wash soon after.

He was on the end of some sharp passing play in the Quins 22 and burst through the defence to score.

Lang’s conversion made it 19-15 to the hosts with 20 minutes left and the sizable home crowd were dreaming of the semi-fi-nals.

But the Quins hit back with vicious efficiency as Williams leapt into the try area for his second of the afternoon, leaving a simple conversion for Craig Evans.

The game could have gone either way just three points in it and less than 10 minutes on the clock.

But Craig Evans’ last penalty put the Quins six points ahead, and RGC were unable to find the converted try they needed before the referee blew for full time.

Results 27 FebruaryDolgellau 20 v Bethesda 7Following report kindly supplied by Dolgellau RFC. Last season’s cup finalists, Dolgellau, are through to the semi-final of the North Wales Cup for the third season in succession, following this comprehensive victory over a stubborn Bethesda outfit.

Dolgellau dominated the first period and did not allow the visitors to settle and had all the possession coming their way. However they could not break down some firece defending from the visitors, and there was fifteen minutes on the clock when Dolgellau full-back, Dion Jones, hit the target with a penalty to put his team 3-0 ahead.

Bethesda with the outstanding flanker, Rhys Williams winning a fair share of possession from the line outs, were doggedly attempting to get a foot hold into the game and no 8 Arwyn Griffiths was hauled down by Dolgellau skipper, Gerwyn Thomas, on his way down the right touchline that would have ended in a certain score. Dolgellau responded with the first try of the match with five minutes of the half remaining. Centre, Dan Brazier made ground out of his own 22, scrum half, Jac Roberts and Thomas released full back, Dion Jones, to break free deep into Bethesda half and he found wing, Gerwyn Pugh to round the cover defence for a great score. Jones added ther conversion to put Dolgellau 10-0 ahead at the interval.

Within six minutes of the re-start Dolgellau went further ahead. Again scrum half Jac Roberts & centre, Dan Brazier were involved, with the outstanding no.08, Dewi Thomas, finally breaking through the Bethesda ranks to score near the posts. Full back Dion Jones made no mistake with the conversion to put Dolgellau in complete command with a 17-0 advantage. Only four minutes later Jones added his second penalty of the game to stretch their lead to 20-0 and seemingly out of sight. As Dolgellau brought on all their substitutes, Bethesda, to their credit began to dominated territorially in the last quarter. Dolgellau were in no mood to let them score, but lost their ‘man of the match’ , Marios Jones to a yellow card with nine minutes remaining. With only four minutes remaining Bethesda finally made the pressure count. Full back, Llion Lloyd hoisted an inch perfect chip into Dolgellau’s left corner and despite what looked suspiciously like a knock on, centre Gareth Edwards was on hand to score the try. He also added the conversion to make it 20-7.

Dolgellau’s reward for this richly deserved victory is a plumb semi final tie at Cup holders, Nant Conwy, knowing if they can continue in this vein they will be a real threat to the holders, as they were in last May’s final.

Llandudno 41 v COBRA 21 Following report kindly supplied by Llandudno RFC. Llandudno swept into the final of the North Wales Plate with a fine second half performance. Cobra took an early lead after five minutes of play with a try by Llew Williams, which he also converted. Llan quickly responded to this, when from a flowing movement of forwards and backs combining allowed second row John Griffiths to cross the try line for a converted try by Ryan Pike.

The home side kept up the momentum, splitting open the visitors defence with winger Hugh Griffith touching down, and it was his older brother Lloyd Griffith who was next on the score sheet, after a telling break by Ryan Pike that he crossed under the posts, with Ryan Pike converting. However the final score of this first half was by the visitors, when from some very poor home defence there centre Iwan Vaughan touched down with Llew Williams adding two more points with the con-version, keeping them in touch with home sides score line at halftime.

The start of the second half saw Ryan Pike increase the home side score with a penalty conversion, at this point of play Llan lost their two props Ian Williams and Mike Williams due to injuries, and due to this the match then had to be played with passive scrums. Llan now began to dominate proceedings, and the pressure began to tell on the visitors defence. Llan launched a flowing attack from within their own half, which the visitors failed to stop, with full back Sam Mc-Clean taking the final try scoring pass to touch down near the posts, giving Ryan Pike a simple conversion.

Nick Maxwell and Ryan Pike completed the home side scoring, breach-ing a tiring visitors defence, with Ryan Pike converting one of the tries which secured the home win. Cobra rallied in the final minutes of play, and a slack Llan defence allowed there centre Jack Dukes to score a try, with Llew Williams converting for the final match points of the after-noon.

Wales Women ended France Women’s hopes of a Six Nations Grand Slam with a shock 10-8 victory at the Gnoll and secured qualification for next year’s World Cup in the process.

France entered the game as firm favourites but heroic defence from Rachel Taylor, who led from the front, and her team set up a memorable victory against Les Bleus.

Wales raced out of the blocks with full back Dyddgu Hywel ploughing over in the corner after fending off French defenders at will in the fifth minute.

However things looked ominous for Wales with the big French pack using the rolling maul to good effect. When powerful No 8 Safi N’Diaye drove over from close range the French would have expected to use it as a launching pad to increase their lead but the Wales defence held firm until halftime.

Five minutes after the break France took the lead through an Audrey Abadie penalty. With the wind behind them, France threw everything at Wales but the home defence stood firm and soaked up all the pressure.

Against the run of play, prop Megan York finished off an out-standing Welsh move in the 58th minute to send the Gnoll crowd out of their seats. The move was initially set up after replacement prop Amy Evans rocked back a French ball carrier with a bone jarring tackle.

Lifted instantly, Wales reclaimed possession and moved down-field with winger Bethan Dainton tearing the French defence to shreds. Wales quickly recycled the ball and worked York over in the corner to put Wales back in front 10-8.

Despite possessing a dominant scrum France were unable to break through the Welsh rear guard where the entire pack tackled themselves to a standstill. Veteran prop Catrin Edwards assisted Taylor with countless tackles and bursts from rucks to relieve pressure with Sioned Harries also showing up well.

France continued to batter away but Wales refused to buckle and for once their heroic defence paved a way towards a rare victory against the previously unbeaten French side.

Victorious skipper Rachel Taylor paid tribute to her squad, saying it was a team effort which secured the win.

“The magnitude of this win probably won’t sink in for a couple of days,” she said. “We knew they are a physical side, we knew they would come and try and beat us up front but I’m massively proud of the girls’ effort.

“We knew what to expect, they try and bully you and beat you up around the park, we knew it was coming and just had to front up and compete. The first five minutes showed we were here to party - I couldn’t be prouder.

“We’ll now go and face England very confident - why wouldn’t you after beating France?”

Wales Women 10 v France Women 8Fantastic performance by the women makes it a weekend to remember with the Under 20, Men and Women all beating France. Report by WRU

Page 13: NORTH AND MID WALES RUGBY NEWS: MARCH …...Sunday 13th March 2016 6 Nations: Scotland v France 3.00pm Monday, 14th March, 2016 WRU U12 to Seniors CPD Coaching (Catch and Pass) at

Following match report kindly supplied by Eifion Harding.

For once the conditions were favourable enough to allow these most dedicated of players to show what they are capable of and for the loyal band of supporters it soon became apparent that there is plenty of potential at hand to feed the prospective Pirates Cluster Club in a months time. Some of the players on view were clearly far more experienced than others but all were eager to learn and it was only the habit of supporting the ball carrier continuously that ensured that Caernarfon were able to draw clear on the scoreboard.

A brisk opening period saw the Cofis on the attack with a clean Lucy Owen break bringing play deep into Bethesda territory and with good support and link play by Amy Roberts she freed centre Elan Jones to score the opening try. Fellow prop Cara Usher then recycled well for ever dominant stand off Sophie Ellis to draw in the cover before releasing fullback Beth Whittle who outsprinted the rest to score close to the posts and convert.

Bethesda drew some comfort from the willingness of evasive centre Stephanie Parry to attack at speed but the tackling of Cofi scrumhalf Ffion Jones was a revelation therefore nullifying many attacks at base. Sophie Ellis then broke through from the base of the scrum to score granting Beth Whittle another conversion. Ellis was again in on the act as she gathered a loose ball and popped the ball to inside centre Martha Morgan for another five pointer.

Pesda scrumhalf Efa Glain was industrious throughout and linked well with standoff Erin Wyn who often got the better of the first would be tackler and was instrumental in putting her team on the front foot so allowing fullback Ceri Williams to finally break Cofi resistance and score a much deserved try following a deter-mined charge.

Prominent Number 8 Mali Quaeck then scored following a pick up from the base of a scrum before a debut charge from Shan-non Clark allowed Sophie Ellis to feed Amy Roberts who ground-ed deftly despite the close attention of numerous tacklers.

During the second half the Cofis maintained the pressure and were able to add to the score line with another Mali Quaeck charge. Wing Elin Jones then drifted into midfield and when finally stopped found Elan Jones at hand to gain her second five pointer.

With players beginning to tire, more gaps appeared and the final points of a thoroughly entertaining encounter saw Amy Roberts yet again support Mali Quaeck to find herself free and score out wide. Good work by Bethesda’s Penny Carr led to another break by Stephanie Parry only for Mali Quaeck to track back all of fifty meters to halt her inches short.

The final Caernarfon total comprised of the five from nine con-versions that Beth Whittle succeeded to convert.

A major rugby sevens tournament at a Colwyn Bay school has been hailed as a tremendous success.

Eighteen U16 teams from across North Wales and the North West de-scended on Rydal Penrhos for the event, which took place on Saturday, February 27. The tournament was split up into pool stages, before all teams com-peted for either Bowl, Shield, Plate or Trophy honours.

After a highly competitive day of action, Ellesmere College came away victorious after a thrilling 17-12 win over Pwllheli Rugby Club in the final.

Triumphing in the trophy category were Stonyhurst College, who defeated Eirias High School 27-5 in the final and Rydal Penrhos by the narrowest of margins in the semis.

Chester Centurions beat their club rival Barbarians 39-5 to take the Shield, while Birkenhead School took home the Bowl crown with a 54-5 victory over Rhyl Rugby Club. The final award went to Nant Conwy, who took home the plate after a series of fine performances throughout the tournament.

There are already plans in place to stage the event next year, and Direc-tor of Sport Allen Boyd was thrilled with how the day unfolded. He said: “The tournament went very well and the standard of play was incredibly high throughout.

“I would like to thank all staff who helped throughout the day, and a special mention must go to pupils Hannah Patrick and Josh Lynch for giving up their time to assist.

“I would also like to thank all the teams who made the journey to Colwyn Bay, and from speaking to them I know that they got a lot out of the tournament, which was great.

“We are already looking forward to hosting the event next year and hope that this is the start of another fine tradition here at Rydal Pen-rhos.”

A young rugby star at a Colwyn Bay school has been named in the start-ing lineup for Wales U18s clash with France this week.

Efan Jones, an 18 year-old scrum half, who has also broken into the RGC 1404 senior squad this term, narrowly missed out on a place in the U20 squad for their Six Nations campaign, but is expected to play a starring role for the U18s in Friday’s clash at Pandy Park (7.15pm). Head coach Geraint Lewis said, “We are looking forward to playing France who are always powerful at age grade level and have such a rich rugby heritage.

“With a clean sweep against France last weekend from the seniors, Under 20s and Women, we hope to carry on in the same vein by kicking off our international season with a victory but we are under no illusions that it will be an easy task.

“We performed well in beating Leicester Academy last month, and some of our players have had time with the Wales under 20 squad, Ki-eran Williams coming on against France last weekend, so they will have benefitted from that.”

Rydal Penrhos pupil Efan, a Wrexham native, is regarded as one of the most talented young players in the country at his position, and scored his first ever senior try for RGC earlier this season in their Swalec Cham-pionship win over Newcastle Emlyn. Following Friday’s game, and England a week on Sunday, Wales host an inaugural U18 International Series involving England, Ireland, Scotland and Italy over Easter.

Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “Efan was very unfortunate not to make the U20 squad despite being only 17 at the time, so that in itself tells you just how much talent he has.

“He has been a credit to both himself and Rydal Penrhos with the way he has performed this season for the school, RGC and Wales, and we are confident he will play a significant role on Friday and in Wales’ upcoming fixtures.”

Llandrindod Wells 7 - Penygraig 41With both sides keen for a game after so many postponements this sea-son, there was a lot of surplus energy to expend before the match set-tled with Llandrindod first off the blocks and quickly in to the Penygraig 25 before the visitors countered with a break out and a fairly easy touch down. On the offensive again after the restart, Penygraig were only kept out by booming clearances from stand-off Jonathan Duggan whose pairing with scrum-half Dale Wilson, recently returned from business commitments, was starting to prove extremely useful.

A further try, much like their first, extended Penygraig’s lead to ten points before Llandrindod were able to gather themselves with their pack rumbling forward towards the Penygraig line and a final pick up and scamper by Aled Price to touch down out wide, Danny Davies kick-ing an improbable conversion. By now the match was turning decidedly bad tempered, with the referee yellow carding a player from each side, just after Penygraig scored another unconverted try, and a further try, this time converted, just before half time.

The second half was much like the first, with the advantage going either way, though by now the sound of the referee’s whistle was the most noticeable occurance on the pitch. Penygraig stretched their lead with a further three tries, all converted, running out deserved winners.

This week, Llandrindod are down in the South again, with a match against Caerau Ely.

Next week’s issue will include the fixtures, results and league tables for Llandrindod Wells, Rhayader and Trefyclawdd, along with the North Wales Youth Divisions One and Two and the North Wales 2nd XV Premiership and Championship
