CHARIOTS OF FIRE
N O R T H A M E R I C A N P R E M I E R E
Each year, through various donations and sponsorships, we are committed to helping our local communities.
We’re proud to be the 2017/2018 season sponsor of The Grand Theatre.
Supporting the arts, locally.
17-1670 Grand Theatre ad-Ev1b.indd 1 2017-08-17 10:01 AM
We would like to acknowledge the history of the traditional territory in which the Grand Theatre operates. We would also like to respect the longstanding relationships of the three local First Nations groups of this land and place in Southwestern Ontario. The three First Nations communities closest in proximity to the Grand are the Chippewa of the Thames First Nation (part of the Anishinaabe), the Oneida Nation of the Thames (part of the Haudenosaunee) and the Munsee-Delaware Nation (part of the Leni-Lunaape).
Chariots of Fire is one of the world’s most respected films. Imagine my delight when I heard it had been transformed into a play. How would they ever put all that run-ning onstage, I wondered? Five years ago I saw the premiere production in London, England’s West End. It was such a thrill — I was transported back to the 1924 Olympics and I felt like I was there inside the excitement of the day. I am pleased that we are producing the North American premiere of this play after many years of negotiations. It is the perfect finale production for my first season here at the Grand — a play that celebrates passion, dedication, and going for the gold.
Mike Bartlett, a highly respected playwright, has taken the movie and transformed it for the stage. What excites me most is how Bartlett has taken the physical energy of the story — in partic-ular, the running races — and found theatrical ways of making them come to life.
This project has been a creation of epic proportions for us here at the Grand Theatre, causing us to invent new ways to use our theatre. In order to tell this story properly, we have transformed
our auditorium and created a running track, invited audience members onstage, and redefined our beloved theatre in order to transport us to England, to Scotland, and finally to the to the 1924 Olympics in France. It has been a thrilling ride for all of us.
Welcome to Chariots of Fire. I hope that it inspires you to follow your passions with full force and dare to dream whatever you wish.

was born on December 15th 1899 in Bedford, England. His father Isaac was a banker
who had emigrated from Poland; his mother Esther hailed from Wales. His two brothers were Sir Sidney Abrahams, an Olympic long jumper, and Sir Adolphe Abrahams, a doctor and pioneer of sports medicine.
During the First World War, Abrahams served as a lieutenant in the British Army. When the war ended, he headed to Cambridge and, in addition to his aca-demic work, Abrahams competed in running while at university. He competed in two Olympic Games: in 1920 in Antwerp, and in 1924 in Paris, where he won the gold medal in the 100m, and a silver medal as part of the 4x100m relay team.
In 1925, Abrahams broke his leg, and had to retire from athletic competition. He went on to become a successful sports journalist, commentating for bbc Radio, and serving as chairman for the Amateur Athletics Association.
H A ROL D A BR A H A M S , 1921.
Behind the WinWhile many know about Harold Abraham’s triumphant run to win the gold medal in the 100m at the 1924 Olympics, his path to Olympic glory wasn’t easy. During the semi-final heat, Abrahams saw one of his fellow runners move before the starting gun was fired. However, the false start Abrahams expected was never called, and he found himself watching as the race began without him. In a feat of immense athleticism, Abrahams crossed the distance in a world record time of 10.4 seconds; however, his time was recorded at 10.6 seconds, due to his late start. It was enough to get him into the 100m final, where, as Abrahams put it, “I won’t be left a second time.”
THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE: 1924 Harold Abrahams
Greater than GoldLiddell’s achievements at the Olympics were not limited to winning races — he also won the everlasting respect of his peers. One of his fellow runners, Sir Arthur Marshall, makes this admiration evident in his comments on Liddell’s performance at the Olympics: “the 400 metres in some way provided the greatest thrill of the meeting with the world record being broken by Eric Liddell three times in two days. It was thought that Liddell had some chance of winning, but nobody thought Liddell capable of the amazing performance he achieved in the final...finishing in what at the time was described as ‘a most lion-hearted manner’...This was probably the greatest achievement of the VIIIth Olympiad.” In his time as an athlete, as well as in his missionary work, Liddell sought out greatness and strove always to be better.
was born on January 16th 1902 in Tianjin, China. His parents were Scottish missionaries. He attended
boarding school in London, and then enrolled at the University of Edinburgh. In 1923, he set a new British record for the 100m sprint, marking him as a favourite for the gold medal at the 1924 Olympics. As Chariots of Fire depicts, Liddell chose to withdraw from the 100m sprint races, instead competing in the 400m to win a gold medal, and in the 200m, where he won a bronze.
After the Olympics, Liddell returned to China to serve as a missionary. In 1941, the Japanese army advanced into the region, and Liddell and his family were forced to flee to a rural mission station, where Eric provided assistance to anyone in need of med-ical help or food. In 1943, the Japanese had reached that rural mission, and Liddell was interned by the army. He passed tragically in 1945 as the result of a brain tumour and ill health.

THE STORIES THAT SHAPE US THE ZELINKA FAMILYWhen Marianne and Richard Zelinka heard the North American Premiere of Chariots of Fire was to close the 2017/18 Season at the Grand, as proud Londoners and people who appreciate good theatre, they knew they wanted to do “something” to support this project.
Marianne and Richard are the parents of Andrea, Deanna, and Jessica who are high-perfor-mance track and field athletes. It was this natural alignment with the story and its themes of being true to yourself, overcoming the struggles and challenges of striving to be the best you can be, as well as the iconic theme music that inspired them to give.
The Zelinka daughters got their start in London, at Banting S.S., London-Western Track Club, and Western University, then competed in many provincial, national, and international cham-
pionships. During this time, “It became a family tradition on every competition day; I would wake my daughters up by playing the Chariots of Fire theme music full blast,” recalls Richard. “You could say that the Chariots of Fire theme is a centrepiece of the playlist of our lives.”
Youngest daughter, Jessica, inspired by her older sisters, went on to win many national titles, representing Canada (and London) in two Olympic Games (Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012) with 5th and 7th place finishes respectively in the Heptathlon and 7th in the 100m Hurdles; in three Commonwealth Games (two silver medals); in the 2007 Pan Am Games in Rio (gold medal); and at three iaaf World Championships.
The Zelinka Family speaks highly of the expertise and training provided in London that gave them a solid base and translated into national and international successes. Not unlike the experiences of families with children who are passionate about the pursuit of theatre, the Zelinkas made sacrifices. But as Richard and Marianne explain, “our rewards are memories, fellowship, and shared experiences from around the world which we would not have had were it not for athletics and our daughters’ pursuit of excellence.”
To honour her successes, Jessica was part of the Grand’s recent panel on the Pursuit of Excellence at which she talked about what it takes to be the best — how pursuing excellence shapes a person — and where to go when you reach the top.
A generous gift from the Zelinka Family has been directed to the construction of the specially designed track that will run through the theatre seats. We thank them for their support.

Sprinters competing at the highest level in sport combine proper physical training, mental training, and looking after themselves to stay healthy outside of training with proper nutrition, recovery, and medical support.
Even in the 1920s, Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell were no exception to following these principles, and each athlete’s skilled train-ing led them to unprecedented success. Of Liddell’s three events (100m, 200m, and long jump), he preferred the 100m. In 1923 his best 100m time was 9.7 seconds — a British record that wasn’t equaled for 23 years. Liddell’s revelation that he was to compete on a Sunday was, in fact, a fictionalized invention by the screenwriters of the film. Liddell was aware of the problematic 100m schedule — a major plot point in Chariots — several months before the Olympics, and he needed to change his training for the 100m/200m to training for the 200m/400m. In these few months before the Olympics Eric’s best time in the 400m was 49.6 seconds. At the Olympics, he ran 47.6 seconds, which at the time was an Olympic and World record.
RACING ON THE SPRIET STAGEChariots of Fire presents a unique challenge for performers. There is no pretending: the actors actually race for the finish line. But how do performers prepare to become real runners onstage? We asked their running coach, Vickie Croley (Head Track & Field Coach at Western University). Here’s what Vickie had to say about training, taking care of yourself, and working with the Chariots of Fire cast:
ON TRACK
When working with the actors to prepare them for the rehearsals and performances, I felt that the most important considerations were teaching them basic sprint technique, empha-sizing the need to wear proper footwear, the importance of a proper warm-up and recovery, as well as how to sequence workouts. We first met in early February for a three hour teaching session to go over all of these things. I was quite impressed by how well the actors picked up the sprint drills and how they took feedback and made corrections. They told me they are used to taking direction — I wished some of my ath-letes were as good at this skill! I then provided them with 2-3 workouts to do each week leading up to the start of rehearsals on March 26th. This would give them time to practice the cues provided and to ensure that they stay healthy. Once they arrived in London we met a couple times each week to have some supervised ses-sions where I could provide some feedback and an opportunity for them to ask questions. I was also thrilled to work with the staff at the Grand regarding footwear, stage construction, and providing feedback to make the running scenes as realistic as possible.
ON TRACK
What does it take to Train for a Race? Weekly training for the 100m/200m typically consists of two or three short speed workouts and one or two speed endurance workouts. Each is preceded by an 30-45 minute warm up. There is also an emphasis on drills to improve running mechanics.
Short Speed Workout: This involves three sets of 3 x 40m all out runs, 1 minute rest between reps, and 6-8 minutes between sets. During these workouts, there is an emphasis on the techni-cal components of the sprint. These runs can also be from starting blocks to work on technique. The first 20-30m of the run is the acceleration phase, progressing from low running to tall running.
Speed Endurance Workout: Three x 150m at 90-95% with a 12-15 minute rest in between. If an athlete is training for just the 100m, these runs wouldn’t exceed 150m, while if the runner is training for 200m, they run a distance of up to 300m.
For the 400m sprint, there would be fewer short speed workouts and longer speed endurance workouts with runs over 400m.

AMBROSE SMALL An Extravagantly Musical, Mysteriously Grand Ghost StoryPlaywright Trina Davies World Premiere Halloween 2020 – Celebrating the Grand’s 50th Anniversary Season
Canadian theatre tycoon Ambrose Small built London’s Grand Theatre in 1901. On December 2, 1919 he vanished, never to be found. Set against the wildly scandalous vaudeville era, Ambrose Small will invite audiences to explore the Grand as an interactive, site-specific musical adventure.
Starlight Tours A musical drama centred on events reported in Saskatchewan in the early 2000s that trace back to the 1970s. A series of investigations revealed a practice by the Saskatoon police of taking First Nations people to the city limits and abandoning them at the side of the road in the dead of winter. The practice became known as “starlight tours.”
Mi’kmaq artist, musician, composer, and playwright Cathy Elliot was originally commis-sioned to write the book. She passed away suddenly following the first workshop of Starlight Tours with the Canadian Music Theatre Project at Sheridan College. In honour of Cathy we will continue to develop Starlight Tours with Writer Melanie Florence and Leslie Arden as Composer and Lyricist.
An Undiscovered ShakespearePartnering with the Stratford Festival, compass is proud to support the development of Spontaneous Theatre’s latest improvised creation. An Undiscovered Shakespeare will present a workshop on the McManus Stage for a limited special event run, October 11 to 13, 2018.
