It opened heaven and earth as soon as the 148th Belmont Stakes was over. That’s the kind of pull Creator had on June 11.

Creator, a troubled 13th in the Kentucky Derby five weeks ago, just nosed out Destin at the end of the Grade 1, $1.5 million

Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park, providing trainer Steve Asmussen with the biggest win of the year for him in a campaign that is shaping up far more celebratory than two years ago.

You remember the Asmussen saga of 2014 – a deceitful piece of propaganda was put out by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals alleging he cruelly treated horses, some media outlets ran with the obviously distorted content, and Asmussen became public enemy No. 1 in racing. After exhaustive investigations by the states of Kentucky and an even longer one in New York, he largely was exonerated, save for being cited for a few minor transgressions in New York.

with a cancer diagnosis that she beat back. And two months ago, Asmussen was

voted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame after being taken off the ballot two years ago and kept off it last year. As gratifying as is that achievement, the rain that fell after the Belmont was like a final, welcomed cleanse, as Asmussen accepted congratulations for winning the biggest race in a state whose gaming board once held his fate.

“That’s going to look good on the plaque,” Asmussen said of his first Belmont win as the rain poured down.

Creator was purchased as a yearling by the WinStar Farm of Kenny Troutt, who is deeply religious, hence the spark of genius behind the name. Creator raced for WinStar for his first nine starts. Earlier this week, celebrity chef Bobby Flay bought a minority share in Creator, and a few days later, he cooked up a classic winner.

Flay said he wanted to have a horse to run on Belmont Day and had looked at several

prospects – “not necessarily a Belmont horse,” he said – before Elliott Walden, the chief executive of WinStar, “told me I could get involved with Creator.”

After that, it was up to Creator and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. After starting from the far-outside post in the field of 13, Crea-tor was largely able to get a ground-saving trip, but he needed every inch of the stretch run to get up and beat Destin by a nose. A 16-1 shot, Creator paid $34.80 for $2 to win and completed 1 1/2 miles on the fast main track in 2:28.51.

Lani, the Japanese-based colt, was another 1 1/2 lengths back in third. He was followed by Governor Malibu, Stradi-vari, Brody’s Cause, Cherry Wine, Getty-sburg, Suddenbreakingnews, Trojan Nation, Exaggerator, Seeking the Soul, and Forever d’Oro.

With Creator winning the Belmont, the Triple Crown races had three differ-ent winners; the last time that happened was 2013. Nyquist captured the Derby five

weeks ago, was third in the Preakness, and did not run here. Exaggerator was second in the Derby, won the Preakness, and was the 7-5 favorite in the Belmont. He beat only two longshots.

Kent Desormeaux, who rode Exaggera-tor, said there “was not a straw in his path.”

At the quarter pole, “there was nothing there,” Desormeaux said.

It was a warm, muggy afternoon, but no rain materialized until just after the Belmont.

Gettysburg, owned by WinStar, provided the final piece to get Creator to the winner’s circle. Because the race was shaping up with little pace, there was concern that both Creator and Exaggerator – in whom WinStar has the breeding rights – would have a tough time unleashing their late runs. So, WinStar put him in the race as a rabbit.

Gettysburg, with Destin stalking him, set solid fractions under Paco Lopez of 24.09 seconds for the opening quarter, 48.48

seconds for a half, 1:13.28 for six furlongs, and 1:37.96 for a mile before yielding.

“We needed a fast pace up there, as much as we could get,” Troutt said. “Creator was able to run his race.”

After getting over into the first turn and racing in 10th, Creator steadily advanced while inside horses down the backside and was up to sixth with a quarter-mile to go, sitting in a pocket two paths off the rail, awaiting room.

Exaggerator first had him pinned down but could not go on and retreated. Ortiz then chose to knife between Stradivari and Governor Malibu and got through. He had 1 1/2 lengths to make up with a furlong to go and just got there.

“He gave him a perfect trip,” Asmussen said. “He saved yards and won by inches.”

The win was the first in a Triple Crown race for Ortiz.

“It’s important for me,” he said with emotion while being interview by NBC’s Donna Brothers. “I’m very happy.”

Creator was sent by WinStar to Asmus-sen owing to his success with offspring of Tapit. Even though Creator had won the Arkansas Derby just two starts ago, Asmussen said the Belmont “proved his worth” because it validated the Arkansas Derby.

Creator has now won three times in 10 starts. The first-prize money of $800,000 brought his career earnings to more than $1.5 million. By running in the Derby and then skipping the Preakness before winning the Belmont, Creator became the ninth winner in the last 17 Belmonts to run Derby weekend at Churchill Downs before waiting five weeks for the Belmont.

“Today was perfect for us, by inches,” Asmussen said.

For a fleeting moment near the top of the stretch of the 2015 Belmont Stakes, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin got excited about his chances to win. The feeling didn’t last long, and Frosted became a footnote to history as American Pharoah completed the first Triple Crown in 37 years.

Fast forward a year, and at the top of the stretch of the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handi-cap on June 11, McLaughlin got excited again as Frosted was making a four-wide move to join the vanguard. This time, the moment will last a lifetime as Frosted, in an absolutely scintillating performance, galloped to a 14 1/4-length victory in the $1.25 million Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park.

The margin of victory is believed to be the largest in the 123-year history of the Met Mile. The previous record is believed to be held by Conquistador Cielo, who won this race in 1982 by 7 1/4 lengths. Frosted’s final time of 1:32.73 is a stakes record, eclipsing the mark of 1:32.81 set by Honour and Glory in 1996.

“I thought we could win last year’s Belmont, but it didn’t work out. We ran into American Pharoah, so this is a huge performance here today,” McLaughlin said. “Huge. Probably the biggest win I ever had for Godolphin for sure – the way he did it and what it does for him going forward.”

The Met Mile is considered a race that can boost a horse’s stallion prospects. When you win this race in the manner in which Frosted did – and you’re a son of Tapit, as Frosted is – it would appear that he has a bright future in his second career.

Frosted was making his first start in the U.S. since finishing seventh to American Pharoah in last fall’s Breeders’ Cup Clas-sic. He spent the bulk of the winter in Dubai, winning the Maktoum Challenge Round Two by five lengths before finishing fifth to California Chrome in the $10 million Dubai World Cup.

McLaughlin initially pointed Frosted to the Met Mile because he didn’t want to wait four more weeks until the Grade 2 Subur-ban, a 1 1/4-mile race here July 9. The more McLaughlin thought about it, the more he felt this was a perfect spot.

“He’s very versatile. He can do anything, we just need to give him a chance,” McLaughlin said. “We thought this is a great spot, and often they go very fast early. There weren’t any sprinters in there to go 44, but they went fast enough, and he wasn’t that far back.”

Eighth out of the gate, Frosted advanced

CONTINUED

Breeding

into fifth early on down the backside as Noble Bird, Anchor Down, and Marking sparred on the lead through a half-mile in 45.35 seconds.

Around the turn, Frosted was still on the inside and edging closer to the leaders. Approaching the top of the stretch, jockey Joel Rosario tipped Frosted four wide, just outside of Anchor Down, who was begin-ning to put away the other speed horses.

In the blink of an eye, Frosted spurted away from the field, and he just glided home with Rosario barely moving on him. He returned $6.70 as the favorite.

“He was getting stronger and stronger. It was very easy for him,” said Rosario, who was recording his third stakes victory on the card. “Before turning for home, I tipped him outside. I knew I had the horses in front of me, and I didn’t even ask him to go yet. I sat a little bit, gave him a little more chance, and then when I did ask him, he just rolled.”

McLaughlin credited his brother Neal, who had the horse in Dubai and at Saratoga since he returned, for having Frosted ready to run.

As part of the Win and You’re In program, Frosted earned a fees-paid berth into the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in November at Santa Anita. Frosted could be pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Classic instead, but those decisions can wait.

First, there’s a Met Mile victory to savor for a while.

Cavorting earned the right to be called the leader of the East Coast filly-and-mare handicap division with a 2 1/2-length victory over Forever Unbridled and a star-studded field in the Grade 1, $1 million Ogden Phipps on June 11 at Belmont Park.

Cavorting gave trainer Kiaran McLaugh-lin his second straight Phipps victory. Wedding Toast was an even easier five-length winner of the race a year ago.

Cavorting rated about six or seven lengths off the early pace set by the outsider

Desert Valley and did not have a horse beat as the field of seven approached the stretch. Cavorting, with jockey Florent Geroux aboard, circled six wide while launching her bid leaving the final bend, quickly ran by the leaders upon settling for the drive to open a comfortable advantage, and was not threatened thereafter.

Forever Unbridled, the early trailer, moved into closer contention near the inside after six furlongs, steadied along behind the leaders entering the stretch, angled outside, and finished with good energy once clear. She was a half-length in front of the rail-skimming Carrumba at the end.

Curalina, the 9-5 favorite, stalked the pace, stuck her head in front after six furlongs, but lacked the necessary response through the final furlong. She finished fourth, followed by Sheer Drama, Stopchargingmaria, and the tiring Desert Valley.

The 1 1/16-mile Phipps marked the first time Cavorting had ever raced beyond a mile. A 4-year-old daughter of Bernardini owned by Stonestreet Stables, she completed the distance over a fast track in 1:40.14 and returned $10.40.

“The jock did a great job,” McLaughlin said. “I was happy because she settled. She can get keen, but once she settled, I was happy. I just wanted her to wait and wait and get outside – that’s what she wants to do. So, he did a great job.”

Geroux was aboard Cavorting for the first time. He replaced Javier Castellano, who rode her to victory in the Grade 2 Ruffian earlier in the meet but kept his regular seat aboard Breeders’ Cup Distaff champion Stopchargingmaria in the Phipps.

McLaughlin said immediately after the race that he wished the Breeders’ Cup could be moved this year to New York, where the Distaff would be decided around one turn. The 2016 Breeders’ Cup will be held at Santa Anita.

“Her pedigree indicated she wanted to go further from the beginning, being she’s by Bernardini,” he said. “At one turn, she’s great. We’ll probably have to try her around two turns now.”

every bit as strong as the Flintshire based for three years in France with trainer Andre Fabre.

Moved overseas by Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms to be based in the U.S. with Brown this year, Flintshire deliv-ered a scintillating performance June 11 while making his first start since Dec. 13, winning the Grade 1, $1 million Manhat-tan Stakes by 1 3/4 lengths.

Under Javier Castellano, Flintshire stalked a slow pace before making his move in the last five-sixteenths of a mile. He whizzed past the leaders and won going away, running his final half-mile, according to Trakus, in an amazing 44.56 seconds. Asked to name the best turf horse he’d ever ridden, Castellano pretended to ponder, scratching his chin before reply-ing definitively, “This one.”

Ironicus, who got into a tight spot in upper stretch and had to weave back and forth for room in the stretch, ran well up the inside to finish second, a half-length better than the pacesetting World Approval. Grand Tito was fourth, followed by Divisidero, Big Blue Kitten, Triple Threat, Slumber, and Oathkeeper.

Slumber ran well below his best form, pulled up poorly, and was vanned off the course, but Brown, who also trains him, said Slumber appeared not to have suffered any major injury, though he had been cut on one of his forelegs.

Brown said the Manhattan hadn’t been seriously considered for Flintshire’s seasonal debut until the horse began training with notable verve.

“Ironically, this race wasn’t even our first pick, looking at the schedule and how he’d been running a mile and a half,” Brown said. “He dragged himself here. He was just so sharp work after work. I can’t leave him in the barn for a million dollars.”

World Approval broke on top from the rail and went to the front, with Grand Tito and Divisidero stacked up to his outside. Flintshire wasn’t far behind into the first turn either, but Castellano eased him back to stalk the pace in midpack while about two paths off the rail.

World Approval set comfortable splits of 23.81 seconds, 49.77, and 1:13.90, at which point the pace began to quicken. The fourth quarter went in 23.19 seconds, at which point the sprinting really began – and no one sprinted home faster than Flintshire. Still second at the stretch call, he continued accelerating, and with Ironi-cus having gotten hung up in traffic, the race essentially was over a half-furlong from home.

Castellano kept busy, and Flintshire held steady, getting his 1 1/4 miles on a very firm, fast-playing course in 1:58.92. He paid $3.40 as the odds-on favorite.

“He’s a phenomenal, spectacular horse,” Castellano said.

Shug McGaughey, Ironicus’s trainer, gently rued his horse’s tough trip but was pleased with Ironicus’s performance and said the horse would be aimed at the Fourstardave at Saratoga.

As for Flintshire, there are no set plans right now, though his connections will work backward from the Breeders’ Cup Turf, and given the ease with which Flint-shire won over 1 1/4 miles, Brown said he’d not be afraid to consider the Arling-ton Million in August.

Flintshire, a Juddmonte homebred, is a 6-year-old by Dansili and out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Dance Routine. He ran his career record to 20-6-10-1 and pushed his career earnings to more than $8.1 million.

Flintshire, racing with Lasix for the first time, never turned a hair on a hot, humid day and did everything right in the running. “Exuding class” is a racing cliché, but that’s the Flintshire vibe.

“He has an indescribable amount of class about him,” Brown said. “It’s little things. He’s just so intelligent, and you can pick that up very early on. He walks around the shed row like he’s the man – and he is the man.”

Carina Mia raced on the lead in her first four starts but changed tactics after not breaking well to win the Grade 2 Eight Belles Stakes at Churchill Downs in early May. On June 11 in the Grade 1 Acorn, she came from off the pace again, this time rallying from last to win the $700,000 race by 1 1/4 lengths.

Carina Mia didn’t break sharply in the Acorn and was taken back by jockey Julien Leparoux. When Javier Castellano eased Cathryn Sophia off the pace while racing in front of Carina Mia, Leparoux again took hold of Carina Mia, and she ended up in the last position in the six-horse field.

“I thought we would be in front of Cath-ryn Sophia, but when we weren’t, I decided to take back,” Leparoux said.

Cathryn Sophia, the 4-5 favorite, broke alertly and was joined on the lead from the outside by Go Maggie Go. When Paola Queen moved up inside Cathryn Sophia to make it three across the track, Castellano took Cathryn Sophia back into a stalking position.

Cathryn Sophia moved up between Go Maggie Go and Paola Queen on the turn. Soon thereafter, Carina Mia began to advance. In upper stretch, Cathryn Sophia took the lead, but she could offer little resistance to Carina Mia, who rallied five wide into the stretch and drew away.

Off the Tracks rallied to overtake Cath-ryn Sophia by a length for second.

Carina Mia, trained by Bill Mott, paid $6.10 to win as the second betting choice. She was timed in 1:44.97 after even frac-tions of 23.05 seconds, 46.17, and 1:10.23.

Mott and Carina Mia’s owner, Three Chimneys Farm, will now have to decide whether to stretch out Carina Mia in distance or keep her around one turn. Mott said he would discuss the options with Goncalo Torrealba, the chairman of Three Chimneys.

The next major race for 3-year-old fillies in New York is the Grade 1 Mother Goose at 1 1/16 miles on July 2, a race that Mott said is too close to the Acorn.

The July 24 Coaching Club American Oaks at 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga is the prep for the 1 1/4-mile Alabama on Aug. 20.

Another option would be the Test, a seven-furlong race at Saratoga on Aug. 6.

“We’ll have to make a decision which way we want to go,” Mott said. “I think she’d probably be a perfect fit for the Test. Mr. Torrealba sometimes likes to stretch his

horses out. We’ll have to see what the best thing to do is.”

The beginning of Carina Mia’s season was delayed when she missed the Grade 2 Davona Dale at Gulfstream Park with a minor illness and then was unable to run in the Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn Park in March due to a herpesvirus quarantine at Payson Park in Florida, where she was stabled.

Carina Mia had to go into the Grade 1 Ashland at Keeneland without a prep and finished fourth, beaten 2 1/2 lengths. She rebounded with a six-length win in the seven-furlong Eight Belles prior to the Acorn.

Bill Mott won his third stakes and his second Grade 1 of the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival when Celestine parlayed a beautiful stalking trip into a 3 3/4-length victory.

Mott won the $196,000 Belmont Corona-tion Invitational with Suffused on June 9, the first day of the festival, and on June 11 won the Grade 1, $700,000 Acorn with Carina Mia and the Grade 1, $700,000 Just a

Game with Celestine.Celestine had a nice 3-year-old season

in 2015, winning three small stakes as part of a four-race winning streak. In her start prior to the Just a Game, she scored a 3 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2 Honey Fox at Gulfstream.

Celestine broke on top in the 13-horse Just a Game, a one-mile turf race for fillies and mares. She settled off the pacesetting La Berma, tracked her to the stretch, and then took command of the race.

Her final time of 1:31.64 was one-hundredth of a second off the Widener turf-course record set by Elusive Quality in the 1998 Poker Stakes. Elusive Quality also was trained by Mott. “That was a world record at the time,” he said.

Celestine paid $17 as the fourth choice in the race. She is now 6 for 12 for owner James Bryan Jr.

“She’s gotten better as time has gone on,” Mott said of Celestine. “She was rating well and looked very comfortable out there today.”

Mott said he had no immediate plans in mind for Celestine’s next race.

Recepta ran well for second. She saved ground to the stretch and finished with a good bid, although she was unable to threaten the winner.

Mrs McDougal, a narrow 7-2 favorite over Recepta, raced to Recepta’s outside to the stretch turn, then had to swing outward for racing room in upper stretch. She was just up to take third from Lady Lara.

Lady Laura was one of two other horses in the race trained by Mott. Lady Lara is in foal to Uncle Mo. Mott’s third horse, My Miss Sophia, raced in good early position but tired to finish last.

Dacita beat Sea Calisi and Guapaza in the Grade 2, $500,000 New York Stakes on June 10 at Belmont Park, but the big winner was Chad Brown, who trains all three fillies.

“Listen, all three horses ran terrific, so that makes a trainer happy,” Brown said.

Owner Martin Schwartz, whose horse finished second, wasn’t so pleased. Sea Calisi, whom Schwartz calls “my best horse” and who was the 4-5 favorite in the race, suffered through a brutal trip in defeat. She stumbled one step into the race, was stuck in last behind a slow pace, then had rough passage along the inside when full of run through the homestretch.

“Sea Calisi unfortunately didn’t have a great trip there inside,” Brown said. “I felt like if she could have gotten clear, she’d have had a better kick than she showed, but that’s turf racing, especially short field, moderate pace.”

Photo Call, the second choice at 7-2, quickly went clear on the lead, setting moderate splits of 25.05 seconds, 50.31, and 1:15.23, the half-mile and three-quarters fractions into a headwind of 10 to 15 mph. Guapaza raced in second, jockey John Velazquez waiting to challenge the leader until partway around the far turn. He drew abreast of Photo Call, who folded up without much fight, but then came her two stablemates to challenge.

While Irad Ortiz Jr. on Dacita swung outside at the top of the stretch, Jose Ortiz on Sea Calisi stuck to the inside and found little room there. Sea Calisi, so full of run that her head was cocked from pulling for free rein, bobbled a bit while in tight, found no room when her rider gently probed on the rail, and finally came between horses for a clear path in the final furlong or so. She finished well, but not as well as Dacita, who had a clean outside run after being maneuvered four or five paths from the fence.

Even accounting for a tailwind, the top three all flew home, the race’s final quar-ter-mile going in 22.07 seconds. Dacita was timed in 2:01.46 for 1 1/4 miles on firm turf and paid $11.80 as the third choice. She beat Sea Calisi by three-quarters of a length, with Guapaza another half a length back

in third. It was 1 1/2 lengths farther back to Trophee in fourth, followed by Kyllachey Queen, Photo Call, and Havana Moon.

Dacita, who was bred in Chile and imported to the U.S. last year after nine starts, won for the first time since she beat Tepin in the Ballston Spa last summer at Saratoga. She ran decently in finishing second in The Very One Stakes at Gulf-stream this winter but was ninth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf last fall at Keeneland and a well-beaten fourth there April 16 in the Jenny Wiley.

“The race at Gulfstream wasn’t bad off a layoff,” Brown said. “Really, her two Keeneland races, it’s becoming more apparent she doesn’t like that track, so that’s really relieving because she’s a horse that we had such high hopes for. Irad rode her beautifully. It’s his first time riding this filly, and she can be a little quirky, so hats off to him.”

Dacita’s major upcoming goal is the Grade 1 Diana at nine furlongs at Saratoga this summer. Brown and Schwartz would like to send Sea Calisi to the Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington; Brown said it’s uncer-tain whether the filly would have a start before then.

The 5-year-old Dacita, a multiple Group 1 winner in Chile owned by Sheep Pond Partners and Bradley Thoroughbreds, won for the eighth time in 14 starts. She’s a daughter of Scat Daddy and the mare Daja, by Seeker’s Reward, bred by Haras Paso Nevado.

Trainer Dallas Stewart said he wasn’t too happy with Joel Rosario after his ride on Forever Unbridled, who had to settle for second in the Grade 1, $1 million Ogden Phipps Stakes.

About 90 minutes later, however, Stew-art and Rosario were best buddies again

Breeding

after Rosario guided the Stewart-trained Tom’s Ready from last in the field of 12 to a 1 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2, $500,000 Woody Stephens Stakes on June 11 at Belmont Park.

“That was a great ride, wasn’t it?” Stew-art said after Rosario altered course and split horses in midstretch to get the victory. “This was like a [Angel] Cordero ride.”

Tom’s Ready was cutting back to seven furlongs following a 12th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby. Tom’s Ready had recorded his only previous win going seven furlongs in a maiden race last September at Churchill Downs.

That day, Tom’s Ready won with the addi-tion of blinkers. In the Woody Stephens, he won with Stewart having removed the blinkers for the first time in nine starts.

“I just figured I’m going to take them off,” Stewart said. “He worked good when I took them off.”

Stewart expected Tom’s Ready to be laying fourth or fifth. Instead, he was last of 12, about 14 lengths back of Justin Squared, who rocketed out to the lead under Martin Pedroza and ran an opening quarter in 21.77 seconds and a half-mile in 44.40.

Fish Trappe Road, under Luis Saez, stalked Justin Squared through those fast fractions and took the lead turning for home. In deep stretch, Fish Trappe Road began to drift out badly. Rosario had Tom’s Ready on the move and was planning to go outside until he saw Fish Trappe Road drifting out, taking Star Hill with him.

“I could see they were drifting out, so I made the decision to go inside because I didn’t want to stop my momentum,” Rosa-rio said. “He was running really hard, and I didn’t want to stop him.”

Darting back to the inside, Rosario found plenty of room as Tom’s Ready drew clear for the win. He ran seven furlongs in 1:21.38 and returned $17.20 to win.

“He looked like Darren Sproles,” Stewart said.

Sproles is a former running back for the New Orleans Saints. Tom’s Ready is owned by Tom and Gayle Benson, the owners of the Saints.

Fish Trappe Road held second, three-quarters of a length over Star Hill. He was followed by Sharp Azteca, the 3-1 favorite, Dig Deep, Tale of S’avall, Seymourdini, Counterforce, Awesome Gent, Mrazek, Justin Squared, and Imperial Hint.

Stewart said he likely will freshen Tom’s Ready and point him to the Grade 1 King’s Bishop at Saratoga in August.

After winning the biggest race in Canada last year at age 3, Shaman Ghost won on one of the biggest days in the United States on June 11, when he scored an emphatic victory in the Grade 2, $400,000 Brooklyn Invitational Stakes, a 1 1/2-mile race for older horses that served as a warm-up act for the Belmont Stakes later in the day at Belmont Park.

Shaman Ghost ($9) was always forwardly placed behind a soft pace, and when he knifed between rivals at the top of the stretch under jockey Joel Rosario, the acceleration was immediate and over-whelming. He bounded clear passing the eighth pole and drew away to score by 4 1/4 lengths, unleashing a 24.39-second final quarter-mile that carried him to the wire in 2:28.40 on the fast main track.

Turco Bravo outfinished Elnaawi by a length for second. Samraat was fourth and was followed by Securitiz, Doyouknow-something, the favored Kid Cruz, Neck ’n Neck, Catholic Cowboy, and Waymond Boyd.

Shaman Ghost was trained last year by Brian Lynch. But late last year, trainer Jimmy Jerkens said he got a call from Frank Stronach, the owner and breeder of Shaman Ghost, asking if he would take the horse.

“He called me out of the blue,” Jerkens said outside the winner’s circle.

Shaman Ghost did not get back to the races until May 21, nearly 10 months after his last start, and he finished third in an optional-claiming race at Belmont Park.

“He ran a lot better than it looks on paper,” Jerkens said. “He never gave up.”

With that prep, Shaman Ghost was set for a major move forward in his first time running 1 1/2 miles.

“He never gets tired,” Jerkens said.Shaman Ghost, 4, is a colt by Ghostzapper

out of the Gilded Time mare Getback Time. He has now won 5 of 10 starts, and the $220,000 winner’s share brought his career total to more than $900,000.

Trainer Charlton Baker had been look-ing for a graded stakes victory all of his career. He didn’t think it would come with a horse he claimed for $20,000 more than two years ago.

But Joking indeed gave Baker his first victory in a graded stakes, rallying from last to run down the pacesetting Dads Caps by a neck in the Grade 2, $250,000 True North Stakes on June 10 at Belmont Park. It was three-quarters of a length back to Holy Boss in third. Catalina Red, the even-money favorite, finished fourth, followed by Always Sunshine.

Private Zone, the 8-5 morning line favorite, was scratched after his trainer, Brian Lynch, surrendered his license earlier this week following a failed drug test.

Joking, a 7-year-old gelding by Distorted Humor, won for the ninth time in 38 starts. It was his eighth win from 26 starts since Baker claimed him for himself for $20,000 on Jan. 13, 2014.

“I was looking for a graded stakes horse forever and he happened to be the first,” said Baker, who has won 1,402 races since he began training in 1998. “I never imag-ined he’d be the first.”

And even as well as Joking was doing, Baker thought in the True North “we might have been over our head a little bit, but I was going to give it a shot. The scratch helped us a lot.”

With Private Zone out of the race, Dads Caps assumed the role of pacesetter, open-ing up a one-length lead over Catalina Red in fractions of 22.44 seconds for the quarter-mile, and 44.71 for the half. Always Sunshine and Holy Boss were also chasing the pace while Manny Franco was content to keep Joking in last, but only about five lengths off the pace.

As Dads Caps, under Irad Ortiz Jr., continued on the lead in upper stretch, Joking made a five-wide bid in the stretch and ran down Dads Caps in the final yards.

Joking’s final time was posted as 1:08.04 for six furlongs and he returned $21.80 as the second-longest shot on the board. Dads Caps, at 12-1, was the longest shot on the board and the two combined for a $158 exacta in the five-horse field.

“Just being that close where he was, five

lengths off the pace, I know he had a shot because he’s going to give you that kick,” Baker said. “But all day it seemed like speed kept on going so I knew he’s going to come with his run but I didn’t know if he was going to get there.”

It was a tough beat for Dads Caps, a two-time Grade 1 winner who looked on his way to stealing the True North. He was coming off a last-place finish to Joking in the Diablo Stakes, a performance trainer Gustavo Rodriguez said was a result of the horse having a case of the thumps, an elec-trolyte imbalance.

“We did something different with him to prevent the thumps and he ran good,” Rodriguez said. “I thought we had it.”

Baker said he would look to run Joking back in the Belmont Sprint Championship on July 9 but then give the horse the Sara-toga meet off because he doesn’t do well up there.

Pure Sensation, trainer Christophe Clement said, is a difficult horse to keep sound.

“When this horse is right, he’s a top-class horse,” Clement said.

Pure Sensation was making his first start since Feb. 9 on June 11 in the Jaipur Stakes, and Clement had him right for this start. He quickly made the lead from a wide draw under Jose Ortiz, set a strong pace, and held off Disco Partner to win the Grade 3, $300,000 Jaipur by a neck. Pure Sensation’s winning time of 1:06.76 for six furlongs on very firm, fast-playing grass established a course record, eclipsing the 1:06.82 that Keep the Faith ran on July 24, 2005.

Disco Partner closed strongly from the rear for second and might have caught the winner had jockey Junior Alvarado been

able to find a seam after saving ground around the turn.

“It was really tight,” Alvarado said. “There was no place to go, and I finally just had to take him eight, 10 wide.”

Disco Partner’s rally came up just short, but it made little difference to Patricia Generazio, who bred and owns the first two finishers. James Ryerson trains Disco Partner.

There appeared to be several front-runners in the Jaipur, but Pure Sensation ($39.20) burst from stall 12 and outran them all to the lead, opening a clear lead through a quarter-mile in 21.64 seconds. Rocket Heat tested him around the turn but quickly faded, and Pure Sensation took a one-length lead to the eighth pole. By then, Disco Partner was rolling on the far outside, but it was too late, and Pure Sensa-tion was home.

“The firm turf helped him,” Clement said. “One of the reasons he didn’t run well in the Breeders’ Cup [Turf Sprint] was because the turf was soft.”

Pure Sensation finished eighth in the Breeders’ Cup, then failed to make the front and checked in fifth Feb. 6 in the Gulf-stream Park Turf Sprint, his issues clearly troubling him again, but Clement gave the gelding time, and Pure Sensation gave his best again. The 5-year-old gelding, by Zensational and out of Pure Disco, by Disco Rico, won for the fifth time in 16 starts and boosted his bankroll well over $500,000.

Disco Partner finished one length clear of Ready for Rye, who was a nose better than A Lot, the tepid 7-2 favorite, with Mosler another head back in fifth.

Like anyone else, trainer Brad Cox loves when a plan comes together.

Cox said earlier in the week he had long targeted the Grade 3 Mint Julep Handicap on June 11 at Churchill Downs for his top two turf mares, Cash Control and Sweet Acclaim. And there they were, sepa-rated by only a head at the finish of the 1 1/16-mile race. Cash Control, benefitting from a clean rail run under Shaun Bridg-mohan, was a narrow winner over her

stablemate.“I was very proud of both of them, and

honestly, the way they had been train-ing, we had kind of expected it,” Cox said. “They both had been training as well as mares could train, and they both showed up and ran great races.”

Cash Control, bred and owned by Bert and Richard Klein, returned $6.80 as the second choice in the field of 10 fillies and mares. The daughter of Pioneerof the Nile finished in 1:41.12 over a firm course. She has now has won eight of 15 career starts, with $58,900 of the $100,000 purse lifting her career bankroll to $343,600.

Sweet Acclaim, owned by Swift Thor-oughbreds and Bradley Thoroughbreds, was sent away the 9-5 favorite.

“She was close to becoming a graded stake winner, but I just feel like as long as she stays healthy, she will become one,” Cox said. “She ran a great race.”

Zipessa finished third, another 2 1/4 lengths behind the top pair.
