By Dave ScottWhat a great name for a salon and spa! Tucked away over in Waterford (51 St. James Street South)… sits Embrace Hair Salon and Spa… I know, I know… what would I know about hair salons… well to be truthful very little… but when Chalyce Woods dropped me an email, inviting me over… I thought sure… why not! I have known her husband, Lance, for a number of years… but had never met his wife… I figured it would be fun to swap a few stories about him.

When I walked in, I was impressed with the Salon; the old building had been refurbished… inside and out. Chalyce explained that they had purchased the structure in 2010 and had worked away at creating just the right ambience before opening just six months ago.

The business is going very well with Chalyce having a long client list that she brought with her to the new salon. She previously worked out of her home in the Waterford area. Her new Spa does it all… a massage therapist is on staff; tanning beds are available, and hey, there are full provisions for the guys as well.

Chalyce realizes that Waterford needs a salon and spa… actually she believes the folks of Waterford deserve it. I like her attitude, she is a strong believer in community and welcomes the opportunity to work with other businesses in the area… and to prove it she has set up what she is calling, “Knockout for a Night” on Friday April 27th from 4 - 8pm. This evening includes hair styling, makeup application as well as professional photos. H’ordeurves will be served by The Liaison College. Jewellery from Fifth Ave Jewellers will be on display… and can be worn for the photos… all this and a gift bag will be presented to the ladies in attendance… cost for this evening is only $150. It is an opportunity to have a wonderful evening and enjoy all that Embrace Hair Salon & Spa has to offer… and to pamper yourself! If you would like to be part of “Knockout for a Night” give Chalyce a call at 519-443-8488 or check out the website www.embracesalonandspa.ca.

Courtesy of Dalhousie PlaceDalhousie Place is a safe, neutral, child focused service for children and their parents/family members. Supervised Access Centres exist to provide a comfortable space for children and their families for parental visitation or exchanges. The Ministry of the Attorney General provides funding for Supervised Access Centre in 52 Court Districts across Ontario. The valuable services offered by Supervised Access Centres are not only available in Ontario, but internationally. The Supervised Visitation Network is an organization consisting of over 500 Supervised Visitation providers worldwide. This year the Supervised Visitation Network is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of supervised visitation!

Our volunteers are an integral part of our

services. Volunteers work along with our staff to supervise visits at the centre and prepare factual observation notes. Our volunteers gain experience working with children and families as they go through difficult and/or transitional times, which are often high conflict separation and divorce situations. Issues that affect children’s access may include domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health, special needs, and poverty. Our volunteers are provided with training opportunities on an on-going basis. Our volunteers help promote a positive environment for the families we serve so that they may have successful visits.

To provide a quick snapshot of how vital volunteers are to Dalhousie Place, note that our volunteers logged a total of 630 hours last fiscal year (April 2011-March 2012). Most of our

volunteers have backgrounds in social service work, family law, or police/justice services. Dalhousie Place currently has nine active volunteers, two of whom have volunteered with Dalhousie Place for over three years. Without the contribution of the numerous hours worked by each of our wonderful volunteers, we would not be able to provide this important service to our community. Dalhousie Place Supervised Access Centres are currently located in Haldimand-Norfolk at 41 Kent Street North in Simcoe and at 172 Argyle Street North in Caledonia. Contact the centres by calling 519-428-4838 (ex 32) for more information about our services, or if you are interested in volunteering. You can also visit the website at: http://www.execulink.com/~bdsupacc/home.html.

…would like to thank all our advertisers and sponsors who contributed to our 2012 Fund-Raising Calendar! With these funds we were able to have 200 calendars printed.

We raised $2628!!

The two charities that we support, the area Food Banks and the Canadian organization of WaterCan; benefited from the money we raised!

We were able to send $1494 to WaterCan. They are in the process of building twelve clean water wells in Katooke, Uganda. These wells will service

4,125 children, women and men! Please go to www.giftsofwater.ca/ for more information and/or if you would like to donate to help build these wells.

The remainder of the money was divided between the food banks in Simcoe, St Williams, Port Dover, Waterford and Delhi. Food Banks are always in need and with this money they will be able to purchase the items that their clients need!

We would also like to thank everyone who purchased a calendar! Without all the support we received during this venture we would never have been able to help so many families in our area and abroad!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

NORFOLKSECONDARY SCHOOLAccommodation Review

By Dave ScottSmall business owners are always working hard to make their business better. It is something that requires an owner to be analytical about what he or she needs to do to keep the product strong and the customer happy.

Down at DOVERCRAFT Marine in Port Dover John VanHalteren Jr. and his wife Charlene have done their homework with their business and have opened a storefront (bait and tackle, convenience, marine) to better service the boating customers within their marina and the community… one of the big sellers at the new store is the live bait (minnows, leeches and worms), perfect for the variety of fishing you can do off of Port Dover… especially with the Perch Derby just around the corner!

The store itself will carry everyday accessories for boaters, from ice to snack foods, to a variety of fishing rods, reels and tackle.

For 35 years DOVERCRAFT Marine has been growing to the point where the business stores over 250 boats every year, and has 82 slips that it fills every summer… and I have to mention, a top rated marine mechanic from Port Ryerse’s own, Brooke Snow, plus fibreglass repair specialist, Roger Brown.

DOVERCRAFT also does boat brokerage and sales… these folks sure do keep busy… but today

our focus is on the new store, which is now open and of course decorated with antiques of the nautical theme. The current hours of business are 6:30am till 5pm… so for all of your bait, tackle and boating needs (even snack food items)… stop

into DOVERCRAFT, located a 15 Jaylin Crescent in Port Dover and say hello to John Jr. and his wife, Char, they will be more than happy to give you a hand… phone 519-583-1666 or www.dovercraft.ca.

A regular reader of this column recently sent me this request for information, “Our parents have decided to move from our family home of 43 years to a 2-bedroom apartment in a retirement community. The prospect of downsizing is overwhelming! How can we help them move forward through this emotional time?”

While researching this question I consulted Karen Pivnick of Topcat Relocation & Transition Solutions. Here are some suggestions from an expert in this type of move.

• Get your parents involved in the move decisions as much as possible. Their involvement will affect how well they adjust to the move.

• Break the tasks of downsizing or “right sizing” into small segments, which may begin with 15 minute sessions a couple of times throughout each day. The key is to take

small steps to help them deal with the idea of clearing out their home.

• Begin with rooms that have fewer emotional attachments such as an attic or basement.

• Get a floor plan from the new home and decide which furnishings and accessories will fit into the new space. Select items that hold the most memories such as photographs and favourite treasures.

• Encourage your parents to take time to say goodbye to the possessions they can’t bring with them. Share and reminisce the memories with them. They may only need to read their old letters one more time before throwing them out.

• Encourage them to give cherished items and heirlooms to family and friends. Your parents will be comforted in knowing their possessions are going to familiar hands and will be appreciated.

• Create a memory book of items that are no longer needed or won’t fit into the new home. This may include family photos, furnishings, china or perhaps a treasured trophy.

• Record LP albums to an updated listening format if your parents can’t bear to part with their favourite music collection.

• Remind your parents that less is more and if they haven’t worn that jacket or dress in a number of years, it’s probably a good time to pass it on.

• Donate household items to charities or

perhaps their place of worship. Hold a content sale. Valuable items can be sold for profit through auction, consignment and retail stores that sell used goods.

These suggestions can help reduce your parent’s anxiety levels and make the transition to their new home much easier.

You can turn what appeared to be an insurmountable challenge into a manageable process and reduce the stress and worry of beginning this new, exciting phase of their lives. They will be so grateful for your understanding and loving support.

By Dr. Bruce Veltri D.C., C.P.C.A.

Seniors are a popular group for many persons/groups; these include authors, manufacturers, travel agents and providers of services such as recreation, health and lifestyle. But, there is one topic that

gets very little notice and it is one in which the seniors of today

are quite unique and it needs to be recognized. The topic is the changes that seniors have experienced. Senior Sense is written by a senior; it is for and about seniors, so it seems appropriate that “we” should look at ourselves and compliment each other on what we have done!!

Looking back to our early years, the 1920s, 30s, 40s, lifestyles were quite different and these differences included the area in which one lived, rural or urban. Some refer to these times as the ‘good ole days’, so let us look at them. There are times when reflection is good for us seniors so we can realize the ‘adapting’ we have done and praise ourselves and others too!

Here is a list of words that were common to many seniors - attic, garret, cistern, rain barrel, ice box, hot plate, coal oil lamp, root cellar, water pump, clothesline, party line, hand basin, water reservoir in the stove.

And then there were the friendly folks who made deliveries to our homes bringing such things as

mail, eggs, coal, ice and bread. One cannot forget the horses who pulled the wagons and knew where and when to stop; they were like big pets to us children!

Next, look at phases that were so common to everyone - using hand signals when driving the car, doing the dishes (this meant hand washing, rinsing and drying), taking out the ashes, checking the furnace, cranking the car, putting on the water heater for bath time, bringing drinking water from the outside pump and sprinkling the clothes for ironing.

Is it not remarkable at the adaptations that the seniors of

today have made and the changes they have experienced? Positive compliments are in order. Through all of these years and changes some things are still firm and steady; these include values, interests, beliefs in what is right and wrong, and what is good and bad.

It is probably time to think about supper. So look in the freezer and find something that looks good for tonight and check the cooking time for the microwave, check the computer for messages pour a drink and turn on the coloured TV!!! The ‘good ole days’ can now be the ‘better new days’. Congratulations to all seniors for ‘adapting to change’!!!!

What is COPD? You’ve likely heard this term and not really had any idea what it refers to. COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder and that is a term that encompasses several conditions. The definition of COPD is a lung disease in which the patient has progressive limitations in their airflow, that is not completely reversible. The limitations in airflow are quite often due to inflammation processes. There are two main disease processes that fall into this category. The first one is Chronic Bronchitis, which is

characterized by excessive sputum (phlegm) production, most often with chronic cough, for 3 months of the year for at least 2 years in a row. Emphysema is the second disease in this category which is the loss /damage/destruction of gas exchange surfaces of the lung tissue.

What causes COPD? It can be caused by exposure to noxious fumes, particles or other factors. Noxious items include smog, cigarette smoke, occupational dusts (ceramic, concrete, asbestos etc) and pollutants. The risk of developing COPD from this type of exposure is relative to frequency and amount of exposure to the toxin. The number one toxin causing COPD is cigarette smoke. There are some genetic factors that can cause someone to develop COPD even if they have never had another other risk exposures, however, this is less common.

What are the Symptoms of COPD? Cough, increased mucus/phlegm production and shortness of breath (especially on movement or exertion) are the most common

complaints of someone suffering from COPD. The shortness of breath is often mild at the start of the disease but as it progresses it becomes worse and happens with even the mildest exercise such as walking to the washroom.

How is COPD diagnosed? Patients can be diagnosed from many different tests and/or physical exams. Physical exams would check for changes in breathing patterns, high heart rates and breathing rates, as well as listening to the lungs for any changes in breath sounds. Blood work can be performed to help diagnose how well Oxygen and is being carried and delivered and exchanged for Carbon Dioxide. Chest X-rays are often performed because often with COPD the shape and/or size of lung structure can change and this will help show the severity of the disease process. The standard test used to diagnose COPD is called, Pulmonary Function Testing, which is a series of breathing tests that measure lung capacity and volume, as well these tests can show if certain medications will

help improve symptoms.

How is COPD treated? Treatment for COPD can vary based on the stage and severity of the disease process. The first thing to do is remove any toxin that may have caused the COPD, for example quit smoking and not allow smoking in the house. Most people who suffer from COPD will also be put on inhaler medications (“puffers”). It is common to be on a long acting inhaler to help build up some strength or create a baseline level as well to have a “rescue” inhaler that is taken when shortness of breath sets in. Other treatments can include education on breathing techniques to minimize shortness of breath, chest physiotherapy exercises to help clear mucus or even Home Oxygen Therapy.

When the sun starts shining, it’s time to sprout your toes out of the rubber boots, snow boots and heavy footwear. Let’s freshen up those tired feet and give them some pampering. In a lifetime, we take enough steps a day to walk approximately four times around the world in a lifetime and we lose one cup of fluid a day through our feet. So start your pampering with a good foot soak; no more than ten minutes soaking in room temperature water and add a bit of Soaking Crystals or Epsom salts to the water. If you have rough skin, you may want to use a pumice stone/paddle. Dampen the pumice and keep your foot wet and rub in one direction only over the rough area. Pumice stones are not meant to rub off thick callus or corns. Callus and corns are created from abnormal pressures on the feet and toes. See your Chiropodist/Foot Specialist to advise you in permanent resolutions of callus/corns. Use a nail brush or a soft bristled toe brush and brush around your toenails in the same direction your toenails grow. Once you have finished polishing your feet, enjoy a good foot rub with a foot cream such as Sole Comfort or Heel Balm. Non-fragrant creams that contain urea or small amounts of lactic acid help soften the skin and replenish moisture to dry skin. A small amount of peppermint, menthol or camphor in your foot cream also gives the feet a tingling feeling but keep in mind that creams should never be applied between the toes or around the nails as collection of cream in these areas could possibly create bacterial infections. Oils such as baby oil and Dr. Remedy’s Cuticle Oil are best applied to the nails so that the oils penetrate down the sides and hydrates dry skin and cuticles around the nail. For women who like to sport the new colours of summer on their toenails, look for toenail polish that does not contain toxins such as formaldehyde or toluene such as Dr. Remedy’s Anti-fungal, all natural Nail Polishes in 26 great shades, Remover and top/base coat. The chemicals in many polishes can cause brittle and cracked nails which can introduce a fungal infection in the toenails. You have just completed your “foot makeover” and your feet are ready for summer footwear! Before going outside in your sandals, do not forget to apply sunscreen to the top of your feet to prevent painful sunburns to the top of your feet.Drop in to Simcoe Foot Care & Custom Orthotic Centre for the products listed in this article which are just a few of the many foot care products we offer at 161 West Street in Simcoe (just across from the Simcoe Town Centre) or please call the office to book an appointment with our foot specialists for all your foot care needs.

By MARG WERDEN Batty for batsToday, April 17, is “Bat Appreciation Day” and although I believe this is an American designation, it is a good opportunity to learn more about these interesting creatures. April 17 was chosen as the date to bring awareness about bats to the public’s attention because it is around this time of year that bats begin to emerge from hibernation.

Thanks to urban myths and horror movies about vampires, what comes to the minds of many people when they hear the word “bat” is flying rodents that get tangled in hair, rabies on the wing, or blood-sucking vampires in disguise. In fact, however, bats can actually help protect us from insect-borne diseases because they eat thousands of mosquitoes and other flying pests. If you check the number of rabid-bat-caused deaths in comparison to the number of deaths caused by West Nile disease and malaria, you can really begin to appreciate the work bats do to protect us.

When stadium officials in Tucson, Arizona, decided to eliminate some seating to make room for private boxes, they found that several bat colonies had made their homes under the seats. In the name of progress, the bats, of course, had to go. Now the stadium is plagued by a mosquito problem, which is being blamed on the neighbours who have plants with saucers of water under them sitting on their patios. Funny thing is that the plants were quite likely there before the bats were eliminated! With the thousands of bats gone, the mosquitoes got out of hand.

Bats eat many kinds of flying insects including moths and mosquitoes, as well as beetles and grasshoppers that cause agricultural problems. A Brown Bat can eat up to 600 mosquitoes in an hour and a Red Bat consumes up to 100 moths each night, thereby preventing the laying of about 25,000 eggs that would eventually become

caterpillars. Bats also disperse seeds that replenish our forests and they pollinate plants.

Quite a few bat species are endangered and losing even one species can have a negative effect on our ecosystem. Get rid of your bug zapper and bring on the bats!

Spring is in bloomNot all plants wait for April showers to bring out their showy flowers in May. Spring has already begun to blossom in our forests, roadsides, and meadows. Spring ephemerals have a very short above-ground life before once again disappearing completely to wait for next year.

One of the first ephemerals to bloom is Bloodroot, followed not long afterwards by the Trout Lily, also known as the Dogtooth Violet, Blue and White Violets and Trilliums. The array of colours is dazzling and well worth a hike through the bush. And while you’re out there, look overhead occasionally. Trees such as the Sugar Maple and the Red Maple also burst into colour with their yellow and red blooms.

A few helpful dos and don’ts of checking out the spring blossoms

are provided by Ontario Parks:

• For optimal viewing, DO choose areas with a high hardwood (as opposed to coniferous) forest content.

• DON’T venture off marked trails. Doing so compacts the soil making it tough for wildflowers to grow.

• DON’T pick the flowers. Some plants can take seven to 12 years to reach flowering size; when the flower is snipped it can take another decade for the plant to muster the resources to flower again. So take a picture—it lasts longer.

Earth DayA good day to get out and see those flowers may be Earth Day (April 22). While observing the beauty around you, think about how fortunate we are here in Norfolk to be surrounded by nature and have so many great places to hike. Make a pledge to

help one of the many organizations that have made this possible and to do something to help the planet. This can be as simple as using both sides of a piece of paper before recycling it, picking up litter, or turning off lights. If we don’t take care of the planet, who will?
