By Julie SwainstonLet’s face it. Food and water are necessities of life. Things we all need, without which we cannot live! But – does everyone have access to food and water? You would think so, especially in this day and age, however it is not always the case! Children often go to school hungry, jobs aren’t plentiful, some businesses are downsizing and people find themselves out of work. Many families need to turn to food banks to put food on their tables! During the winter month’s food banks find the need for food even higher. They depend on the generosity of the community to help keep their shelves stocked. All donations are greatly appreciated! Then as we look abroad it is mind boggling to realize that there are countries that do not have access to

clean water – something that we all, here in Canada, take for granted! Sure we do – if we need a drink of water, don’t we just go to our kitchen tap and turn it on and there it is? We don’t have to walk miles each day to fill jugs with water, often dirty water, to take back to the village to be used for drinking and cooking. Countless children, women and men die daily due to unclean water in countries like Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. WaterCan is a Canadian organization who goes into these countries to build wells, rainwater harvesting tanks, and latrines and they also teach the people how to maintain them. “WaterCan is dedicated to fighting global poverty by helping the world’s poorest people gain access to clean water, basic sanitation and hygiene education. Their

vision is simple: Clean Water for All”. Check them out www.watercan.com.Hens For Friends, have as their charities, the food bank and WaterCan because we believe in the importance of both of these charities so that people can lead happy, productive lives! At our monthly potluck, we each donate towards the food bank and have a 50/50 draw for WaterCan. We also sing for groups, churches, festivals or anyone who would like to have us. All money raised is divided between our 2 charities. On March 15th “Hens For Friends” and “Dharma Road hosted a ”FOOD+WATER=LIFE” fundraiser at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #79, in Simcoe, with special guest Eleta Mitton. A special thank you to:

Cassandra Belisle who brought her Photo Booth and took amazing pictures! And to Hannah Dolson who helped us set up and also sold tickets for the penny table and 50/50 draw! Thank you to the Legion for providing us with the space to host our event! We would also like to thank everyone who supported our charities by donating items for our draws…Carter’s Men’s WearFirst Choice HaircuttersAlice’s RestaurantKat & Bob DolsonRon FortDawn McArthurChristien’sConnie FrancisPizza HutKathy BoswellKelly’s MusicPam JaworskiKatheleen EllisKathy DaleRage Body JewelleryErie MusicMarie Collver

By Dave ScottRalph Fess has been selling RVs for Adventure RV in Waterford for the past twelve years. He has seen it all and when you sit and chat with Ralph you quickly realize the vast knowledge he has of everything RV.He tells me that many times, folks will just come in wanting to kick some tires, which is just fine with Ralph. They can be there for ten minutes or two hours and the staff at Adventure RV will take the time to answer any and all of their questions. A funny thing happens when they decide to purchase an RV… they usually come back. Which brings us to the Adventure RV Spring Open House, Friday, April 19, 9 am to 7 pm; Saturday, April 20, 9 am to 4 pm; and Sunday, April 21, 11 am to 4 pm. There will be over 150 different trailers to choose from (new and used), quality names like Rockwood, Puma, Salem, Canyon Cat… and something for everyone’s price range (from $4000 to $50,000). As a nice little bonus there will be

a family style BBQ noon till 3 pm Saturday and Sunday.Purchasing a trailer can be a big experience in anyone’s life and the folks at Adventure RV take it seriously. For example, after your purchase, owner Peter Hotz will spend a couple of hours with you going over everything related to your new trailer. They want the proud owner to be totally educated in all matters related to their trailer… from maintenance to operating, to warranty… right down to every last button. They understand that a happy customer will tell others and that is why the business continues to grow… a commitment to the customer unlike any other.Get out on the weekend, enjoy the BBQ, and wander through the trailers. You will be amazed at the opportunities that lay ahead for you!Congrats to Peter and Lori Hotz (owners of Adventure RV) who will be celebrating ten years in business this June… watch for the celebration!

My heart sank last Monday afternoon as I heard on the radio that two bombs had exploded at the Boston Marathon… my first thoughts turned to a friend who was running. I called his brother to make sure he was okay… he was. I listened intently all afternoon to the news and fielded calls from folks who thought perhaps I was racing. As I watched the images come across my computer screen, I could feel the anger building… WHO? WHY? I wanted answers and I wanted everyone to be safe, from the spectators, to the racers, to the volunteers… my emotions were high. Then the news that folks had died… I took a deep breath… bigger than any breath I would ever take in a run… my legs were weak… like after that long run… I put my, it will be okay - face on for the wife and kids… but I was shaken to the core.I called a buddy we chatted, both of us kinda out of it, numb with what we were witnessing.I pulled myself out of the funk and thought about all the great folks who I run with… all of us driven…

the high fives as we run, pushing to help one another, the finish line hugs, the tears of joy, the unspoken words of a bond you get with fellow runners. The cheering crowd at the finish for any runner is the highlight… the energy from the crowd, the emotional release as you cross the line… and in Boston last Monday, the finish line fell silent. Instead of runners and spectators, the stands were empty. Sirens sounded and emergency crew and volunteers helped the injured… we all felt empty inside… we didn’t have to know the names of the runners or the spectators, to understand their pain… I know the way runners think, like the marathon itself, we will all persevere. We will put in the time, hours on end, running hills, battling the elements, alone with our thoughts… we will grow stronger and faster. Our resolve will remain steadfast… as the miles pile up, we will all shed tears for the folks lost in this needless tragedy. In time we will take the first steps in a new era of running… and the Boston Marathon will rise again!

The Norfolk HERicanes Barrel Restaurant Peewee team finished off their remarkable season with another tournament victory April 7th in Hamilton. The HERicanes went undefeated beating the Stoney Creek Sabres, Hamilton Hawks and St. Thomas Panthers twice to win the gold medal in the Hamilton Hawkey tournament. St. Thomas, probably the strongest team they have played all season, took the HERicanes to a shootout in a very exciting final. In the final game trailing 1-0 the HERicanes got

a game tying goal from Julia Samborski with 5 minutes left in the third period to force overtime. A 5 minute, 4 on 4 sudden death overtime solved nothing, taking the game into a shootout. HERicanes goalie, Nicole Samborski, stopped all 3 of the St. Thomas shooters she faced and the HERicanes got goals from Maddie Loucks and Lauren Moore to win the championship. This is the third tournament championship for this team this season to go along with their recent league championship 2 weeks ago.

Fantastic effort from everyone... fantastic season girls!!!

Everybody deserves a little bit of happiness in their life. For some it’s that first sip of coffee in the morning, for others it’s a night on the town with friends. But for me, I like to feel the wind blowing through my hair as I cruise down the road in the brand new Beetle Convertible!I have to be honest with you - my first encounter with a Beetle was not the most pleasant. I remember it clearly; it was a hot and humid day in Norfolk County and my cousin wanted to take his dog to the beach. His sister was home from university for the summer, with her bright green beat up old Beetle. I think it’s crucial to mention that this particular Beetle did not have working air conditioning. So there I was, crammed in the back seat of a Beetle, cooking in the blistering heat, sitting next to the biggest black lab in the history of the world who couldn’t sit still if his life depended on it. See? Not the best experience! By the time we arrived at the beach I couldn’t tell if I was covered in sweat or drool and I had more dog hair stuck to me than the dog did!Fast forward out of that old green Beetle and into the brand new 2013 Beetle. I have to say the improvements are many and the space is plenty (mind you, I haven’t volunteered to sit in the back with an oversized dog). Looking at the Beetle you can see where both Porsche and Audi had their hands in the new design. It’s sleek; I look at it and immediately think this looks fast! And fast it is. I challenge anyone who hasn’t driven the new Beetle to take it for a spin. Its handling is nothing short of incredible. And the best part of the 2013 Beetle? The 2013 Beetle Convertible! That’s right you heard me correctly - this amazing machine comes in a stunning convertible model. Just in time for summer you can be cruising around the sunny Norfolk countryside! Putting the top down is as easy as pushing a button, and goes down in seconds. As an added bonus, the car comes with a Fender sound system, which meant I could really rock out to the satellite radio. Just driving this car around the Simcoe VW parking lot launched it to the top of my list of favourite things, but it gets better. While taking the car on a little off-the-lot test drive, I discovered that maybe the convertible top isn’t my favourite part of the Beetle. There’s something else that sets this car apart from any other - I can parallel park this beauty!

Lighthouse Theatre is set to present The Odd Couple as its third annual community production. The popular Neil Simon play about a pair of mismatched roommates is a staple in theatres around the world, and its film and television adaptations made protagonists Felix Unger and Oscar Madison household names for a generation. Rather than produce a version that theatregoers would immediately recognize, however, Artistic Director Ritschel opted to stage Simon’s less commonly know, but it many ways superior, female-

centred adaptation. Ritschel says he couldn’t be happier with the result. “The women in this show are absolutely hilarious together,” he explained enthusiastically. “This production is going to make a lot of people absolutely howl with laughter. We’re hoping the word gets out that the show is a great opportunity for a memorable girl’s night out.”The female version of The Odd Couple tells the same story as the original, but the gender-specific twists add extra layers of humour.

Lead characters Felix Unger and Oscar Madison become Florence and Olive, and have the same neat-freak versus slob dynamic as their male counterparts. These starring roles will be played by Meredith Wood and Charly Buck, who have both impressed their director with the development of their characters. “Charly has taken on a huge role and she’s been able to tap into her character’s humour really well,” Ritschel said. “She’s the neat and tidy (and supposedly serious) one, so she doesn’t have as many obvious

gags to get laughs from, but she’s done a great job discovering her character and getting the laughs in other ways.Ritschel says he first became aware of Wood’s ability to perform at Norfolk Has Talent, and made a point of seeking her out to audition for the community production. “Meredith told me she signed up to sing on a whim, and I’m glad she did. She’s an exceptional performer,” he remarked.Rounding out the women in the

There are some mornings that waking is kind of a challenge!

The only parts of the body that move easily are the eyelids and the bladder. The senior body is showing its age and needs time and support to get going. Here are some moves to help greet the day slowly and in a pleasant, relaxed way. After the bladder is comfortable, stretch out on the bed and do each of these exercises 5 times. Make circles with the feet, to the left and to the right and then flex the toes up and straight out - this will feel very good! Next bend one knee and then straighten the leg towards the ceiling - count to 5 and lower it. Repeat with the other leg and do these stretches 5 more times. Next bend knees and put hands across the chest, pull shoulders to a sit up, count to 5 and lie back. Relax and repeat.

If this is the first time for trying this kind of ‘wake up’, doing these twice is a good way to start. Getting out of bed now will need little effort and it is time to put the coffee on.And next, do some counter walks and stretches. Walking sideways, again all moves are 5 times. Walk to the left and then to the right. Then stand on one foot to the count of 5 and then the other foot. Next, with hands on the counter, put one foot forward, count 5 and then do the other foot. Now stand on tiptoes, count 5 and repeat 5 times. The body parts and mind will be feeling so wake! And putting the morning paper on the counter to read while doing these is easy to do!Doing these morning moves is a very enjoyable way for a senior to greet the day and help ensure that walking will be steadier and safer! Do enjoy!

I recently had the pleasure of attending and then getting certified as a trainer for the

Home Exercise Support Program (HSEP). This exercise program was developed and researched by the Centre for Activity and Aging at the University of Western Ontario. The program is a series of 10 gentle exercises that are designed to help the aging senior

maintain their quality of life and continue to perform the Activities of Daily living. We often think of exercises as something we do to tone our muscles or to lose weight, when working with aging seniors the goal is to maintain functionality. Here are a couple examples of what functionality means; Exercise 8 is Reaching. You reach out with your arm as far as you can and hold it in various positions (forward reach, side reach, backward reach), this exercise works the Deltoid muscles but what it does from a functional perspective in strengthening this group of muscles will help the senior to get items from a shelf, comb their hair and get dressed independently. Exercise 2 is Wall Push Ups, by doing this exercise daily the senior will be better able to pick up grandchildren, carry groceries, improve posture or do outdoor chores like shovelling snow off the front steps.I love this approach for a few of reasons. The exercises are gentle, easy to learn and there are only 10 to learn. The exercises have been researched fully; we know that if you perform these 10 simple exercises everyday you WILL improve in your ability to perform your daily activities. The other important consideration is the senior has motivation to do the program because the goals are so important to their quality of life. They will be able to walk better, get out of a chair better, reach up and put away the dishes better. This is exciting! If you are an older senior living at home you may be well

aware of how function decreases and your ability to maneuver around and maintain your home becomes limited. It is so much easier to exercise every day if you have clearly defined goals. At this time I will be training my PSW’s and other frontline staff so that they can then teach the program to our elderly clients. In the fall I will also be opening up this training to all caregivers whether paid or unpaid so that they can then start working with their seniors on these exercises.Victoria Eldercare is moving to a new larger office in the Roulston’s Wellness Centre in June of this year. Besides more space, part of this move is to develop our educational programs. In our new facility we will be training caregivers in the HESP program, teaching a Healthy Aging Program to younger seniors, hosting senior driving and computer classes and running various health clinics. It is an exciting time to be working with seniors when programs like the HESP are being developed and implemented. I am thrilled to be a part of it and it is my mission to help seniors stay in their own home, maintain functional fitness, mobility and independence.

Dr. Bruce Veltri is the owner of Victoria Eldercare, a home care agency matching exceptional care-givers with elderly seniors to help them maintain independence and remain safely in their own home. By George Pond One morning on a late April day I headed to Long Point in hopes of finding a few early spring migrants. I wasn't disappointed. Kinglets, Brown Creepers, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Hermit Thrushes, Eastern Towhees, Flickers and several types of Sparrows seemed to be everywhere. The Bird banders at the Old Cut banding station were extremely busy and I was optimistic that I could get a few good photographs for my friend Vic Gibbons to paint. I heard the high thin "Weee-Seee, Weee-Seee" squeaky wheel type song of a Black and White Warbler. These along with Yellow-Rump and Pine Warblers often show up at this time of the year. The Black and White Warbler was creeping

along the bare branches of a Willow tree. These warblers tend to act like nuthatches, hunting for insects on the bark of a tree. They move along the branches and up and down the tree trunk, sometimes low enough for a good photo. I waited patiently for several minutes and sure enough the bird preened on a small twig long enough for me to get several half decent shots. Some Black and White Warblers nest here in Norfolk, mostly in the larger mixed woodlands of the western part of our County. Your best

chance of seeing one, however, is during migration; almost anytime from late April to mid May at Long Point or in the forests around long Point. I always start at the banding station as the banders there can tell you what migrating birds have arrived during the night. Vic Gibbons liked this pose and used it as a model for his lovely painting "Black and White Warbler". I like the way he framed the bird with those few background Pine needles from a neighbouring tree.

Most often when people think of sleep disorders, sleep apnea

or poor sleep, it is something that is associated with people over the age of forty and generally occurring in men. However, people of all ages, genders and demographics suffer

By Lyndsey Ross, RRT, BSc.

REspIRATORy hEALTh from sleep disorders.

Did you know that approximately 25% of children suffer from sleep problems? You can help avoid sleep problems in your children by creating a regular and consistent routine of proper sleep hygiene. Children are just like adults in that they have two forms of sleep, REM & Non-REM and they cycle through the sleep stages the same. Children require different amounts of sleep as they grow. Infants require 16-20 hours’ sleep per 24 hours, pre-school aged and school aged children require 10-11 hours and teenagers require 9 hours of sleep.Children are not exempt from sleep disorders, while the sleep disorders children suffer from are often different than ones adults suffer from.Dyssomnia is one of the more

common group of childhood sleep disorders. Dyssomnia’s are a group of syndromes involving the timing of sleep, whether it is sleeping at the wrong time, or problems falling asleep at the proper times. One example of a dyssomnia is Sleep Association Disorder, which is when a child needs for certain conditions to be met in order to sleep (such as security blanket, parent etc) and when the child wakes they cannot fall back to sleep without this condition present.Good Sleep Habits:• Create a bedtime routine that is 15-30 minutes in length and allows for transition from daytime to bedtime• The bedroom should be a quiet and dark environment for falling asleep• After the age of four months, children should be encouraged to

learn how to fall asleep alone. • Keep a regular sleep and wake schedule, the wake and bed times should not vary by more than 30 minutes• Avoid giving children caffeine, especially no less than 6 hours before bedtime• Provide your child with regular exercise, but avoid intense exercise within three hours of bed time• After the age of five years, daytime napping should stop, while the occasionally nap is fine, regular daytime napping should be discouraged

cast are Laurie DeFilla, Darleen Degreick, and Tanya Vanrooy, who play a group of Florence and Olive’s friends. “They have chemistry together like The Three Stooges,” Ritschel said. “They’re all great individually, but as a group they’re dynamite.”The three characters that were women in the original have also been gender reversed, and are played by Adam Leifl, Brian Reicheld, and Richard Dupp. Ritschel praised Leifl for his development as an actor since he first worked with him in the 2011 community production of Rumours. “He’s become almost completely fearless as an actor, which is an incredibly important trait,” the director explained. Ritschel later added that he defies anyone to not laugh the second Reicheld and Dupp enter for the first time as a pair of Spanish, would-be wooers whose way with words is suspect at best. “To say that English is a second language to these two would be an understatement,” says Ritschel. “I will personally guarantee that these three guys will get laughs,” he added.Lighthouse Theatre’s production of The Odd Couple is on stage May 2, 3, and 4 at 8 pm, and May 4 and 5 at 2 pm. Tickets for all performances are $20. To order call the box office at (519) 583-2221 or 1 (888) 779-7703, or order online at lighthousetheatre.com.

By MARG WERDEN Spring nature activitiesDespite the cool temperatures over the past week, spring is slowly progressing and the crocuses, snowdrops, and other spring blooms are beginning to show their colours in the flower beds. At least we here in Norfolk were spared the destruction caused by Friday’s ice storm further north and east! The advance of spring also brings more opportunities to get outdoors to enjoy nature and to think about helping our environment. Earth Day EventA number of organizations including the Long Point Region Conservation Authority, Nature’s Calling Environmental Education, and Norfolk County are hosting an event to celebrate Earth Day this Saturday, April 20 from noon to 3 pm at Backus Heritage Conservation Area (1267 2nd Concession Road, north of Port Rowan). The theme

of the day is “Let’s Reduce our Eco-Footprint” and some of the activities for the day include waste reduction games, a guided nature walk, face painting, pond dipping, and bird banding. Admission is by donation. For more information contact: LPRCA at (519) 842-4242 x 227 or Backus at (519) 586-2201 x 5.Take a Hike! Volunteers needed!Nature’s Calling has a new publication, “Take a Hike,” ready for testing and is looking for a number of “pilot” families to test this family activity guide for the nature trails and paddling routes available in the Long Point watershed. In addition to a list of the trails available in the area, the hands-on activities include learning how to estimate a tree’s age, how to “collect” plants and animals with your camera, how to identify frogs and toads by their song, using more than just your eyes to “see” in the woods, a nature bingo, and many more fun activities. Volunteers would be required to take the guide along on a few

hikes this spring and do some of the activities outlined in the publication. Following the hike, the families will be asked to provide some feedback on whether the activity worked and to provide suggestions for improvements to the guide. As a special thank you, every family that signs up to test out the new guide will receive a field guide for a local group of plants or animals.Families interested in volunteering should contact Bernie Solymár at (519) 426-7124 or e-mail him at [email protected] barrel saleTeeterville Public School is partnering with RainBarrel.ca in a fundraising effort that will benefit both the environment and the school by selling rain barrels.
