WELCOME TO OUR BUMPER, BRIGHT AND SPARKLING SPRINGEDITION OF NOOSA STYLE MAGAZINE...
It's amazing... how just a few short months can make such a difference.
Forget about the economic doom and gloom we are constantly being
bombarded with in the media. We're here to add a little Spring sunshine into
your life. Everyone we speak with is positive, excited and looking forward to the
coming season. Living on the Sunshine Coast with its warm, welcoming weather, bright
blue skies and an ocean that blends perfectly into the distant horizon; who could possibly
be miserable or gloomy?
In celebration of Spring and its endless possibilities, local restaurants and cafes have
been eagerly adding seasonal goodies to their menus, to create lighter dishes that are just
perfect for al fresco dining. Whether enjoying a long, lazy luncheon, or a romantic
evening dining under the stars; catching up with a few friends or enjoying quality time
with family, there is a perfect dining possibility just right for you.
And, if you love food (and who doesn't?) we are here to satiate your desires. With
celebrity chefs and amateur cooks now competing on the television screens for viewer
support, everyone seems to be vying for time in the kitchen, eager to experience the joys of
food preparation and the appreciative sighs of their dining companions.
Spring is also the perfect time to visit one of the region's many farmers markets and
wander around tasting and purchasing the freshest and best produce available. As they
say 'fresh is best' - and you can't get much fresher than buying directly from the grower.
Farm gate to plate dining is always the way to go. And, don't forget to check out our wine
selections this issue.
To ensure that you have just the right look for the coming warmer months, Noosa's
beautiful boutiques are displaying a superb selection of local, Australian and
international designer collections.
The region's exceptional jewellers and artisans are currently showcasing the most
exquisite gems and precious pieces to complement your latest fashion acquisitions; and
local artists have been adding the final brush-stokes to their new works for display in the
region's galleries. Several fine exhibitions will be held over the coming months and are
listed in our extensive art feature.
We also look at the latest books for your leisure hours, as well as the Sunshine Coast's
best events; the latest movies, DVDs and music,
This issue also includes some spectacular local properties, as well as the finest furniture,
decorating and interior design options available, as well as the dream car we'd all love to
own.
And, to round out our great issue, we also introduce you to some colourful local
identities to further characterise the eclectic mix of new and old residents, who make up
the fabric of our society.
We are proud to offer our readers a wonderful glimpse of our idyllic Noosa lifestyle.

CHAMPIONING THECAUSE
The 2009 Global Surf Industries Noosa
Festival of Surfing, presented by
Golden Breed, raised almost $19,500
to split between three beneficiary
charities – Surf Aid, the Red Cross
Victorian Bushfire Appeal and Noosa-
based Frangipani Dreams.
At a hand-over of the donations
Festival director Phil Jarratt and
sponsorship manager Trudy Croad
thanked major sponsor Global Surf
Industries for the donation of 35
surfboards and the artists from around
Australia who donated their time and
talent to create works of art. The silent
auction of art surfboards contributed
more than $11,000, the world
champions’ teams’ auction raised
$7,500, and a Red Cross bucket appeal
during a free concert raised $800.
“So many people contributed to this
in so
many ways,” says Jarratt. “Artists,
musicians, sporting champions, surf
companies, volunteers…the list is
endless. But the main contribution
came from everyone who participated
in the Noosa Festival of Surfing in a
spirit of generosity. With more than
500 competitors it’s the biggest
surfing event in the world, but it’s also
the happiest. The people who attend
our event year after year know how
lucky they are to be surfers, and they
want to give back.”
Major sponsors Global Surf Industries
and Golden Breed have committed to
the 2010 festival, slated for 14 to 21
March 2010.

W ith Japanese exchange students being urged by
Danielle to cook food made by their mothers, it came
as no surprise to her parents Diane and David and
sister Karen, that the teenager, who was also studying Japanese
as an external student, preferred sushi to steak.
After two years at the prestigious COTAH, a tourism and hospitality college in
Brisbane, her penchant for working in the travel industry was realised. Meanwhile
her social life revolved around the Sunshine Beach Surf Club where she was an
active member as was ex school mate Drew Ritter, son of the late great
restaurateur Barry Ritter and ex Californian, surfer and banker Ptor Gjestland,
whose mother was Norwegian, no doubt attributing to his handsomeness.
At 22, London beckoned. Working on the front desk of Claridges Hotel was a
wonderful experience until surprise, surprise, guess who turned up?
“I resigned from Claridges, wasn’t given much of an option being told I’d better
make up my mind,” remarks Danielle, adding Ptor had resigned from his company
at 30 and has traded privately ever since. “We travelled through Europe, the States
and Canada…everywhere, spending a lot of time in the car with a foreign radio,
talking to each other which was fantastic.”
Smitten perhaps? She hesitates and laughingly admits “I think if you can spend
seven months with one person there has to be something in it.”
Returning to Sunshine Beach after dining in some of the world’s best Japanese
restaurants, Danielle’s idea for an intimate Japanese restaurant was ignited. There
wasn’t even a sushi train within cooee and “although it’s a foreign cuisine it suits
our lifestyle. Lots of seafood, it’s fresh, light, clean and what people want.
“Ptor’s language skills, since he had lived and worked in Tokyo for nine years, was
an asset when looking for staff and Shinichi (Shin) Maeda, who used to work in
Tokyo in a sushi restaurant, has been here since day one. The now Australian
resident is such a character, has a fabulous palate, understands balance, knows
what he like to eat, understands the customer, is always smiling and we work well
together selecting things that appeal.”
After a pre wedding party at Icebergs in Sydney which is owned by friend and
mentor Robert Marchetti, Ptor and Danielle married on the roof of their house in
Sunshine Beach in 2005.
It didn’t take long before the national food critics came to town, the awards
began to flow and the biggest news of all, a move this year away from Danielle’s
comfort zone to the restaurant hub of Noosa Sound’s Quamby Place.
Perched on the Noosa River the big, bare open space was transformed. “I didn’t
want to lose that boutique-y feel of Sunshine Beach. It was cosy and comfortable
and diners loved their little corner of the world.”
Minimalist lines and polished boards have been maintained, the tatami room
overlooks the dining space out to the river, there are glossy chairs and banquettes,
a VIP or private dining area, well thought-out beverage lists and a sunken bar
where sunset drinks and sushi are a must.
Danielle said she sweated on John Lethlean’s review in The Australian magazine.
“It was during Noosa’s Food and Wine Festival, we’d been open for three days, the
restaurant was full and everyone knew each other. Australia’s leading chefs were
here as were critics Simon Thomson and John, who had booked under his own
name, so probably hadn’t intended writing a review. We didn’t panic, just treated
it as another night at Wasabi.” John was obviously blown away so had to tell the
world about his “stylish adventure from start to finish.”
Laurels however, don’t get any bigger than ones awarded to an individual.
The Electrolux Appetite for Excellence, which was co-founded by Luke Mangan
and Lucy Allon, is dedicated to educating and nurturing emerging hospitality
industry professionals, has as its mentor Michelin-starred, acclaimed Thai chef and
London restaurateur David Thompson.
In addition to the Young Chef and Young Waiters awards there was the Young
Restaurateur award. The judging panel, including Neil Perry and Christine
Manfield, chose 30 year-old Danielle as the most promising restaurant
entrepreneur. Christine said she wasn’t surprised Danielle had no formal training.
“Coming into this business with other life experiences under your belt can and
usually offers a better, broader understanding. She is clearly a manager as well as
working at (and in) her business – and that is what really shone through.
“Formal training can sometimes hinder creativity and vision – that’s what’s
important, not whether you have a piece of paper that really means nothing if you
don’t have the inherent skills and confidence in knowing how to articulate your
philosophy, business goals, develop strategies and how to implement them.” The
qualities Christine looked for were: “Passion, commitment, vision, compassion,
strength of character, determination and skill in driving the business forward,
being brave and being the best possible role model for those who work for you –
leading by example and establishing benchmarks of excellence.”
She thought Danielle had “a thorough command on every aspect of her
business, has the much needed and essential ‘attention to detail’ required for
success, spoke with authority and intuitive understanding. She is warm and
engaging, has a thorough understanding of her brand and where it sits in the
market, aspires to more success and inspires as a great role model for others in our
industry. She is very hands on and her focus is sharp.”
Danielle’s prize package includes return flights to London, attending the
S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants”, event in London, $10,000, 12 month’s
business mentoring and Electrolux professional appliances.
“I’m so excited about the S.Pellegrino dinner, it’s like going to the Oscars –
something money can’t buy,“ says chuffed Danielle who entered to be measured
amongst other young restaurateurs and will the plough the cash into the
restaurant.
One day she’d like to open a small restaurant with Shin offering a spontaneous
menu of the day and in the meantime there’s no plan for Gjestland juniors, just
maintaining the passion for her and Ptor’s careers and enjoying themselves. “We
live in a gorgeous place, have a fantastic life and are super happy.”
Danielle Gjestland’s love affair withJapanese food and culture began atSunshine Beach State School.

HastingsStreet’s newbreedIT’S NEARLY THREEYEARS SINCEOKANUI'S FAVOURITEMEMBER OF STAFFWAS CALLED BYANGELS TO THEKENNEL IN THE SKY.
Hoolie Doolie, a barrel-
shaped Staffie has since been
joined by her mates Bobbie, Nickie and John’s best friend Monty.
Now there’s a new breed ambling Hastings Street, swimming at the beach in
the Woods and after all that thirsty work meeting at Okanui’s version of the office
water cooler – a dog bowl which was made by potting legend Michael legend.
Apart from Cindy, the matriarch of the bunch, all the dogs are juveniles and
thanks to Cindy's coaching, all four-footer’s manners are now exceptional.
Lani, the local surfer has not let celebrity status go to her head and has
generously offered, free of charge to teach the others her stand-up paddle
technique. Cyclone swells do not phase Lani but it’s one step at a time for her
mates.
Roxy is a very confident yet somewhat naughty little miss who loves sitting in
the bowl to cool off. Zowie is a very competent skate boarder, although much
too shy to skite about it. Yang has a great sense of humour and boy does he love
his tucker. The others are much too polite to tell him stand-up paddle surfing will
never be his forte. Gypsy is a leggy, quiet girl, who prefers to run her own race -
nothing better really than a cup of tea and a good lie down.
Last but by no means least is Reef, the baby
of the bunch at only nine months. What a
handsome fluff-ball, with all the girls looking
forward to him maturing into a very
handsome boy.
That’s the new breed in town…almost.
Well you can’t count a regular ring-in, a
bush turkey that loves to be like one of
the gang and hang out at the dog
bowl with the
others.
When the
weather heats

tabletalkSpring into summer Welcome to spring when the garden begins to bloom again with herbs andflowers, when produce from the farmers’ market is kissed by the sun and dishes, complemented byharmonious wines, echo the fabulous, fresh flavours.
Strictly for the birds It was literally birds of a feather flocking together
when Slow Food Noosa took poultry as the theme
for a sell-out dinner at Blue Angel, where Daniel
Mosedale is the owner/chef as well as president of
the local branch.
Ma hor, Thai caramelised chicken with mandarin
and pineapple from the Spirit House’s Katrina Ryan
was a spicy and appropriate start to the evening
and diners were agog with Daniel’s confit duck
breast stuffed with livers, hearts, gizzards and black
pudding, cumquat chutney and upland cress.
Carbonara with wings from Ma Mensa’s Belinda
Tuckwell had tongues wagging, especially about
the raw quail’s egg which sat atop the duck egg
pasta with braised squab and duck prosciutto.
Chargrilled quail, chorizo, cabernet sauvignon
grapes, fennel and apple salad, with sherry caramel
from the River House’s Nathan Nichol was a
triumph and everyone went quackers with
Damon Porter’s outstanding dessert creation of
duck egg cream pot with goose fat cenci and
rhubarb batons. Damon knew he was the
youngest of the chefs and wanted to put a serious
spin on duck egg brulee with rhubarb that’s on
the Coconut Grove menu. He chose to
deconstruct it and make a duck
egg creme pot, which he
poured back into
the neatly
trimmed
duck
egg
shells
to set.
Each
duck egg was
held in place on the
plate by a smear of
toffee and accompanied by goose fat-fried cenci
(sweet fried thin Italian ribbon pastries) plus
orange and vanilla roasted rhubarb batons.
Julie Shelton, the president of Sunshine Coast
Hinterland Slow Food was an engaging guest
speaker and proceeds from the Slow Bird dinner
went towards setting up the new convivium.
Chefs win cook-off Chef Sean Dobbs 22, and third year
apprentice Michael Anderson 20, from
berardo’s restaurant & bar, head to the national
finals in Sydney of the Nestlé Golden Chef’s Hat
Award, the only national culinary competition
dedicated to the development of junior and
apprentice chefs under 23 years of age.
At the South Queensland regional cook-off,
the two chefs beat eight other junior and
apprentice chef teams and will now have their
skills put to the ultimate test, hoping to win an
international travel-training prize worth
$15,000 including a trip to Chili in January 2010.
“Competing is all about gaining experience and
the knowledge of what works and what doesn’t in
a pressured environment,” says Allan Parker, an
Institute of TAFE Cookery teacher, who would be
unaware that Sean and Michael had an edge over
fellow competitors and are used to the heat being
turned up in the kitchen. They’ve survived
whatever Australia’s top critics and chefs have
dished out at the annual Noosa Food and Wine
Festival, which was created by restaurateur and
their employer Jim Berardo.
During the mystery ingredients box cook-off,
each team was scored on the
presentation and overall taste of three courses.
Sean and Michael impressed judges with their
pan-seared baby snapper, tomato and vanilla
risotto and basil emulsion for their entrée; followed
it with a main course of butter-roasted beef rump
with carrot and zucchini purees and port jus lie;
and for dessert they gave an old-fashioned
favourite a modern twist serving a rhubarb and
white chocolate custard with almond mousse.
Fresh from Masterchef While Peter Evans, one of Australia’s most
successful chefs, restaurateurs and television
presenters was all fired up in Noosa for the launch
of his latest book My Grill, lunchgoers at Ma Mensa
were also keen to know about his experience on
Masterchef with rookie chef Julia Jenkins who was
challenged to make Pete’s signature tea smoked
duck recipe for the three judges to blind taste.
With 30 extra minutes on the clock for Julia, Peter
coached her through the recipe, before starting
the dish himself and in a shock result judges
deemed Julia's dish to be superior to that of Petes.
Matt Preston summed it up well saying that he
was obviously a very good teacher – a trait that
also comes through after using his recipes.
Hailing originally from Melbourne, growing up
and doing his apprenticeship on the Gold Coast,
Pete considers himself a good Aussie bloke who
loves to cook outdoors on his Barbie and counts
fishing and surfing as favourite pastimes. He lives
in Bondi with Astrid and their daughters, the girls
who set his heart alight, Chilli aged four and Indii,
three.

laurels and consistently dishes up
delectable fare adored by locals and visitors
alike. Being unlicensed is a bonus.

and black vinegar dressing; roasted spanner
crab, chive and potato cake with a rocket,

marinated chargrilled vegetables, buffalo

Coats is back on hometurf...
When Brad Coats left Noosa High School he began an
apprenticeship mastering French cooking at Pierre Otth’s
La Plage Restaurant in Hastings Street. At Cafe Vespa also
in Hastings Street, he worked alongside his older brother,
Jason Coats who these days has made a name for himself
in Brisbane.
After qualifying Brad changed direction to learn the
finer points of the hotel industry and was part of the
opening team at Cato’s at the Sheraton Noosa Resort.
City life beckoned and at Brisbane’s five-star Quay
West hotel fine dining was the focus, however he soon
realized his heart belonged to Noosa, joining the
kitchen brigade at Pierre Otth’s Boathouse Café,
followed by Bruschetta and Fishtales at
the Hyatt Regency Resort Coolum, during
which time he won many awards
including the prestigious Salon Cullinaire
Chef of the Year in 2000, and was part of the
team cooking for the Commonwealth Heads
of Government Meeting (CHOGM) where
VIPs included Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
After nine years at the Hyatt Brad is home. As
head chef of Madissons Restaurant and Bar on
Gympie Terrace, a finalist in the Best Alfresco

of the Restaurant & Caterers Queensland

TESTAMENT TO THE NOOSA RIVER’S MAGNETISM AREHORDES OF VISITORS WHO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ITS
MYRIAD ATTRACTIONS.
Along the foreshore, pelicans flap their wings and thrust their beaks
under water looking for a feed or join seagulls onshore hoping for
leftovers from family barbecues, picnics and celebrations under
balloon-festooned gazebos.
Anglers cast their lines in anticipation of hooking whiting; roller-bladers,
scooters and walkers many with dogs on leashes, pound the meandering
pavement; and cyclists use the dedicated pathway which is parallel to Gympie
Terrace.
Life down by the riverside and environs exudes a casual elegance and relaxed
ambience and with its smorgasbord of restaurants, alfresco eateries and take-
outs, there’s also a culinary tour of the world to be experienced and enjoyed.
The views take some beating as does the food, at the Boathouse floating
restaurant. Feast on fabulous seafood and a la carte fare on three levels of
waterfront dining. Needless to stay it’s a very popular spot for sunset and cocktail
aficionados.
At the River House, internationally acclaimed chef Nathan Nichols is a true
locavore - a master of creating a daily menu around the best produce in the
region.
Sirocco is exciting. It is inspired and named after the hot Saharan wind that
sweeps across North Africa and delivers the exotic flavours, aromas and colours
of the Mediterranean rim. Chef Cainan Johnson promises to dazzle your taste
buds as you drink in the views across the river.
Watch the action of the river especially youngsters as they learn how to sail,
from the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club, where bistro-style fare, snacks, cool
music and a laidback afternoon or long weekend breakfast, go hand-in-hand.
Discover the magic of Madissons Bar & Restaurant where everything on the
menu is second to none and diners keep coming back for more. It’s also the
place for sighing over sunsets while sipping a favourite bevy.
The Blue Angel’s Daniel and Angela Mosedale know implicitly how to impress
diners with first class service and the very best of wherever possible local and
organic produce such as freshly shucked oysters with jalapeno and lime hot ice.
The Villa Noosa caters for kids and has something for all tastes with great pub
grub especially steaks; Noosa’s Organika has fine food and espresso plus a large
range of certified organic produce and products; and don’t forget, picked-today
produce is a feature of the Farmers Market, held every Sunday morning at the
Australian Rules Football Ground in Weyba Road.
The river precinct also has numerous sassy boutiques, pamper palaces,
contemporary-style art galleries, five-star resorts, cosy apartments and
comfortable backpackers. A few remaining original workman’s cottages are
much sought-after for razing in favour of multi million dollar villas and
apartments.
In the 1920s, Noosaville was a sleepy hollow, except for the first café in the
area, called The Favourite, which was owned by the Massouds. It became the

meeting place for troops during World War 11
when they drove their amphibious army ducks
out of the river to collect their fresh fish and chips,
cooked on a tiny wooden stove. Today Maisie’s is
on the site of The Favourite on Gympie Terrace.
The riverside park has been charmingly
landscaped with timber tables and bench seating
under shaded trees from where lorikeets belt out
birdsong in the late afternoon. Exercise
equipment is well patronized amongst the keep-
fit fraternity. Book a tour and a jazz cruise or hire a
houseboat, half cabin cruiser, pontoon boat, jet-
ski, kayak, canoe, fishing skiff, sailing boat, trike or a
tennis court. Cycling paths extend from the
Noosa River, looping from the Noosa Yacht and
Rowing Club around Noosa Waters, or there’s the Mangroves and Creeks bicycle
ride to Noosa Junction.
The Noosa River is home to the Riverlight Ferry which wends it way from
Tewantin to Hastings Street and return, picking up and dropping off passengers.
The system of waterways from Noosa, which includes clear lakes, dark tannin
waters and sand dunes, forms the gateway to the world’s largest sand island, and
heritage-listed Fraser Island.

It’s easy to be sweptup in the charm andspices of Sirocco.
Lovers of exotic flavours, fragrances and colours
of the Mediterranean rim, can drink in the views of
the Noosa River and be dazzled by unpretentious
fare at Sirocco, a chilled hangout that was named
after the hot Saharan wind that sweeps across North
Africa.
There’s plenty to savour on the spring menu,
designed by Cainan Johnson, ex Season and
Habbits at Cotton Tree, whose Maltese background
and an ear-to-ear smile, suggests he’s found his
marque.
Melt-in-the-mouth balls of Atlantic salmon with
preserved lemon aioli; roasted field mushroom caps
stuffed with caponata, which is similar to ratatouille,
and a garnish of micro herbs, drizzled ever so subtly
with truffle oil; and a well executed Spanish
prosciutto-wrapped soft haloumi with roasted
tomatoes, which burst with flavour in the mouth,
asparagus and a balsamic reduction; were great
openers to share.
Ditto a pizza, however this time the taste buds did
the flamenco. The excellent house-made wafer-thin
olive oil base was topped with fire-roasted
capsicum, vine-ripened tomato, goat’s curd, chorizo
sausage and chilli. Which of the last two was
responsible for turning up the heat? Both I suspect,
however don’t let that deter you. It was a ravishing
beauty.
Crisp skin Atlantic salmon fillet with duck fat
kipfler potatoes, shaved fennel, blood orange and
asparagus spears; steamed Spring Bay mussels with
chilli, garlic, white wine and spinach; and the spiced
lamb meatball tagine with spicy tomato sauce and
baked duck egg with cous cous, had our attention
when thinking about regionality and seasonal
produce. However feeling somewhat sated with the
shared dishes and desirous of something cool, glam
and very lunchtime-ish. we opted for the
Mooloolaba king prawn salad. The prawns were
jumping out of their shells with freshness and the
creamy avocado, peppery rocket leaves, baby capers
and artichoke hearts were enlivened with a zesty
lemon vinaigrette and mustard fruit. Just the ticket
with a crisp Willowglen riesling from the Yarra Valley.
The finale was a buttermilk pudding with
strawberries, candied lemon rind and a raspberry
moscato sauce. The verdict? We like.

There’s nothing quite like kicking backat Daniel and Angela Mosedale’sBlue Angel with its back drop of theNoosa River.
UK born Daniel’s classical technique, is gleaned from years of
globetrotting. He was executive chef for Bill Granger and opened Blue
Angel in 2006. When it comes to being a locavore and specialist in
simple, fresh flavours that speak for themselves, Daniel is king.
Spring produce includes local yellow and blue fin tuna with the latter’s belly being
unbelievable in texture and taste; whiting from Tin Can Bay; bloomin’ great buttery
yellow zucchini flowers from Maleny which are stuffed goat’s cheese; Dakota Vale duck
served with mandarins which are also preserved; magnificent heirloom tomatoes from
the Lockyer Valley;
plus
broad
beans, sweet
potato, peas, beans, cherry
tomatoes, asparagus, blueberries,
strawberries, small leaved sorrel, chervil, baby cos, other salad leaves and herbs and so
much more from favourite growers nearby.
Daniel says to expect dishes such as local yellow fin tuna crudo, shaved fennel. ruby
grapefruit, avocado mousse and citrus salt; slow cooked Petuna ocean trout with spring
vegetable minestrone, fresh goat's curd and toasted orzo; and of course his signature
hot ice oysters will remain stars of the menu.
Whether you sit on the shaded area al fresco or the airy indoors with it new timber
floors, sophisticated yet casual banquette seating and specially chosen artwork this is a
sassy space complemented by fine food, wine and service. And if you’re looking for a
venue for an extra special celebration for about 50, the decision is now easy.

The tomato is native to Central and SouthAmerica and is one of the many foodsbrought back to Europe by the Spanishexplorers.
The scientific term for the common tomato is lycopersicon
esculentum, which mean "wolf peach." The fruit is a cousin of the
eggplant, red pepper, ground cherry, potato and the highly toxic
belladonna, also known as deadly nightshade or solanaccae.
Tomatoes were first cultivated in 700 AD by Aztecs and Incas. Explorers
returning from Mexico introduced the tomato into Europe, where it was
first mentioned in 1556. The French called it ‘the apple of love’, the Germans
the ‘apple of paradise’.
Tomatoes are rich in vitamins A and C, fibre, and are cholesterol free. An
average size tomato (148 gram) boasts only 35 calories. Medical research
suggests that the consumption of lycopene, which makes tomatoes red -
may prevent cancer. Lycopene is the most powerful antioxidant in the
carotenoid family and are the natural compounds that create the colour in
fruit and vegetable. Cooked tomatoes have higher concentrations of
lycopene than raw
There are more than 10,000 varieties. They vary in size from tiny pea-sized
wild tomatoes to the biggest beafsteak and pre- 1960’s heirloom varieties
like black krim, which has a charcoal coloured flesh. Some varieties have real
‘bite’ and others are deliciously sweet such as Tommy toe with red or yellow
fruit that’s delicious to eat straight from the vine. The unusual colour of
black Russian brings flavour and life to fresh salads. The interesting striped
skin of green zebra adds strong flavour and decorative appeal. It is a high
yielding tomato and the ripe green fruit is unattractive to birds. Tigerella has
decorative striped red fruit. Beams yellow pear is a tasty yellow coloured
salad variety with unusual pear-shaped fruit and peach tomatoes are so
called because of the peach-like fuzz on the skin.
During a year Nigel Sutton, fourth generation farmer, grows a staggering
number of heirloom varieties on old vines that previously produced grapes.
Berardo’s executive chef Shane Bailey says they’re wonderful to use
because of their colours, unusual appearance, good strong flavours and
served simply with sea salt, sherry vinegar, extra virgin olive oil and Gympie
Goat’s curd are sublime.
Arnie Schellaars grew sun-kissed varieties of tomatoes that were so
successful, Noosa Reds bought the business and two owners later, the
‘grandfather of tomatoes’ is back growing
cherry, conchita and tradiro tomatoes
to supplement the company’s
increasingly popular produce.

NOBLE Return for aPatricia Favourite...
Marking 75 years since the presence of
Botrytis Cinerea is thought to have been
discovered in Australia, Brown Brothers has
released a world class Noble Riesling under
its flagship Patricia label.
Requiring notoriously fickle weather
conditions to be at its best, Noble
Riesling has been missing from the
Patricia range since the much revered
2002 vintage, making this 2006 release
one to be savoured.
“Brown Brothers has had a long
association with Botrytis going
back to 1934 when it is believed
my father (John Charles Brown)
became the first winemaker to
recognise the presence of ‘Noble
Rot’ in Australia,” said Brown
Brothers CEO Ross Brown.
Although sceptical at first, the
domestic wine industry
eventually confirmed
he was right, paving
the way for John’s
eldest son, John Graham
Brown, to produce Australia’s first
Noble Riesling in 1962.
“This year marks the 75th
anniversary of that initial
discovery and it seems
fitting that this outstanding
wine be released under a
label named in honour of
my father’s beloved wife –
Patricia,” added Ross.

is a light and delicate
sparkling wine offering
aromas of citrus, apple
and pear, and a fresh,
crisp palate with tight
natural acidity.
“The Italians treat
Prosecco as the perfect
way to start a meal and
we believe that
Australia, with its ever
growing love affair with
good food and wine, is
more than ready to
embrace a drink like this,” said Brown
Brothers’ CEO Ross Brown.
Like Pinot Grigio, Prosecco is at its best
when grown in cooler regions and picked
early to retain the high acidity and crisp
flavours most commonly found in wines from
north-east Italy. Accordingly, the grapes for
this wine were grown in the cooler climes of
the family-owned company’s Banksdale
vineyard (485m above sea level) in the
upper King Valley.
Although delicious on its own, this
wine is also great with light ‘dinner
starters’ such as fresh oysters, pan fried
scallops with lemon dressing or even
a selection of sushi and sashimi.
Brown Brothers 2008 Prosecco is
available at selected on premise
venues, fine wine outlets and Brown
Brothers Cellar Door. RRP: $18.90.

the tradition continues to

Southern Comfort was
created in 1874 by New Orleans
bartender, M. W. Heron. The
unique taste of Southern
Comfort can best be described
as a distinct blend of whiskey,
fruit and spice flavours.
Southern Comfort or 'SoCo' as
it is known to a new
generation of consumers, has
become a fun choice when
good friends create legendary
nights together.
In keeping with tradition but mindful of a
new generation of top-shelf connoisseurs,
Southern Comfort Reserve provides the perfect
blend of Southern Comfort with the finest 6-
year-old Bourbon Whiskey.
Although a generation of Baby Boomer
purists may have been a bit worried by the
change of direction (don't worry the original is
still available everywhere!), I can definitely attest
to its smooth, luscious taste and easy
drinkability.
The addition of the full-bodied oak
characters, rich orange and spice characters
delivers an almost liqueur quality that is a
blessing in disguise for Southern Comfort
devotees.

Moringal oil, white truffle, fruit and flowerenzymes, mushrooms and caviar are someof the ingredients adding lusciousness to thelatest beauty treatments.
Spa aficionados concur that Noosa is heaven-on-earth for
totally different spa experiences. Imagine the world's most
exclusive beauty treatments. In the luxurious, calming
environment of the Sheraton Noosa Resort’s Aqua Day Spa,
tension and stress float away as the focus is on indulgence and
rejuvenation. Guests call it heavenly; therapists call it the Art of
Beauty.
Embracing the philosophy based on healing through water or
Sanitas Per Aquas, the Aqua Therapy Centre is set in a private
outdoor courtyard with a walk-through area offering a world of
aqueous well-being with a range of hydro and resistance
pressure treatments.
There are eight multi-purpose treatment rooms including one
for couples, a relaxation area, steam room and an inclusive range
of over 60 face and body treatments for men and women, from a
Thalgo toning body wrap to a hot stone massage, therapies such
as reflexology and products to soothe the mind, body and soul.
Undoubtedly the piece de resistance in beauty rituals is the
Swiss super deluxe, La Prairie caviar firming treatment. A gentle
back massage is a welcome pre cursor before attention turns to
the face and eyes with a two-phase caviar mask requiring
questions while the hands and arms are being drenched with
more luxe cream. Yes the caviar pearls, which pop open when
massaged into the skin do contain caviar – Beluga in fact with the
serum and splashes of myriad other La Prairie potions filling,
firming, removing puffiness and dark circles and working miracles
on fine lines and wrinkles, giving a younger, healthier, more
luminous look.
Surrounded by tropical gardens, life at Ikatan Tropical Day Spa
is at a slower pace. Therapists literally have time on their hands to
celebrate nature by giving authentic
Balinese treatments using traditional
ingredients practiced by cultures since
the 17th century.
Spring is the perfect time for two
hours of relaxing starting with an exotic
hibiscus and raspberry leaf body scrub and wrap. Hibiscus is
blended with raspberry leaf and traditional ingredients to
exfoliate dry skin, then combined with a nourishing milk protein
base to hydrate and soothe. While cocooned in the wrap, enjoy a
scalp massage. A body massage with Ikatan’s signature Balinese
Calm massage oil, leaves the body relaxed, the skin silky smooth
and the mind? That’s guaranteed to be far away.
Spa-liciously spa-tacular
The treatment concludes with a facial using
Elemis’ combination of detoxifying Moringal oil
from Africa, white truffle, fruit and flower enzymes
such as extracts from rose, hibiscus, papaya,
strawberry and kiwi fruit plus organic
essential oils. Because of the high level of
active ingredients, results are visible
immediately.

New Zealand’s Maori ancestors were
the first to identify the healing
properties of Manuka and some of
their remedies and tonics are still used
today. It is the honey produced from the
Manuka flower that has proven to be the
greatest discovery, and in 1981, New
Zealand biologist, Professor Peter Molan
discovered the exceptional antibacterial
and healing properties of Manuka honey.
Pure Manuka honey is now considered a
natural wonder. It is antibacterial,
antimicrobial and antiviral. It is also an
antioxidant that can help to increase vitality
and immunity.
In Australia, recent research by the Sydney
University's School of Molecular and
Microbial Biosciences confirms that some
special health honeys can destroy the
antibiotic resistant super-bugs that are
killing patients in hospitals around the
world.
For the last 18 months, Professor Molan
and his team at the NZ Honey Research
Unit, have been refining testing methods to
identify and rate the potency of different
Manuka honeys. “Unfortunately neither the
words ‘active Manuka honey’, nor some
rating numbers, necessarily mean it’s the
right sort of honey for super-bugs and
some other conditions," “The new method
will give specific values to a natural
substance with natural variability.” he says.
. Manuka honey and Watson & Son
honeys are now being used by Professor
Molan to develop the new testing system.
Watson & Son Manuka honey can be
applied to the skin as a balm, or taken orally
to help to soothe the throat and digestive
tract. It can also be eaten like other honey
products to help to maintain general
health. The honey is not only unique in its
potent healing properties, it also tastes
delicious.
Watson & Son Manuka honey has just
been launched in Australia and is now
available at selected pharmacies and health
food stores nationally. There are four
strengths, ranging from 5+ to 20+ (see table
below). RRP starts at $11.95 for a 250gm jar.

Since Deborah Baker, the creator and
designer of Abakus, made the sea-change
from Sydney four years ago, going from the
corporate world to the creative, she hasn't looked
back.
With a background in graphic design, Deborah
lived in Tokyo for four years and spent 10 years
working for a Japanese Airline - hence her passion
for all things Japanese.
Colour, light and space are key elements in all
Abakus’ design work. “The collection of handcrafted
clothing and accessories is designed as wearable
art,” explains Deborah, whose garments are made
on the Sunshine Coast by five employees who do
everything from pattern making through to finished
sewing production.
“Inspired by the beauty of nature, oriental
sojourns and sea-change, Abakus products reflect
individual expression and escapism through
wearable art. I use Japanese fabrics in the garments
to add tailored lines and give a quirky twist.”
The latest Kyoto Dreaming collection was
inspired by her recent time in Japan’s ancient capital
of Kyoto. “The beauty of the Zen gardens, exquisite
nature plus the lovely local girls in their colourful
summer Yukatas, parading along the river in the
Gion area, the heartland of Japanese Geishas, were
my main inspiration.
“My passion is making women look and feel
good, and to see how confident
wearing my clothing makes them feel is so
gratifying.”

Koningens find paradisein Bruges...V
ibrant colour, texture and raw energy are the
signature marks of Norwegian-born
international artist Svein Koningen, who
spent his childhood in Amsterdam, was educated
in Australia and lived in Noosa with Dianne before
heading overseas for six months. That was in 2005.
Why did you leave Noosa?
We decided on a six month sojourn in the
Charente region of France as Svein always wanted
to spend time in Europe to reconnect with his European background.
The Charente house was such a nightmare we didn’t spend one night there, instead driving around
northern Europe with snowfalls and zero temperatures feeling lost and lonely. We headed for London
and stopped overnight in Bruges, Belgium, not the usual European romantic notion we Australians
think of when moving to Europe but it’s only three hours from London, Paris and Amsterdam and has
a wonderful lifestyle. It feels like a little island in Europe. Heritage listed, Bruges is similar in size and
tourism numbers to Noosa plus the Flemish really appreciate art and are some of the biggest buyers
of it in the world.
Fond memories of Noosa?
We arrived unknown with seriously bold bright abstract art that was well accepted by the locals.
We loved the early morning walks with Remi down at the Noosa River, meeting up with other dog
lovers and having breakfast at Sierra Café, before dog rules were enforced.
The National Park with its koalas, dolphins and fabulous birdlife is just the most beautiful place in
the world and we have some wonderful friends who we plan to visit this Christmas, including Penny
del Castillo who’s also our agent commissioning and selling the work to both commercial and private
clients.
Was it Noosa where Svein's art really became noticed?
When you become a professional artist at midlife there is no book to tell you what to do. So we
were very naive and basically thought you paint, exhibit and sell, but then the reality sets in. We were
lucky enough to get into the Eumundi markets, which gave us immediate feedback plus we also met
the most amazing people who were looking for something different, bought paintings and some
have even become life long friends. The time came to have a studio from where many paintings were
sold to private buyers and commissions taken such as the one at Pilu, (where Sirocco now is).
How’s life in Bruges?
It’s a city of bikes and walking which transpires to a more intimate community. Living in the middle
we go for days without using the car. This summer has been spectacular – stunning long nights, loads
of music concerts. Last winter was dreadful with dreary grey wet days seemingly lasting for months.
Living in the centre of Europe allows us to travel to Paris for a day, Amsterdam or Cologne to see
exhibitions or to say Vauclause in northern Provence or Tuscany for inspiration for the Wilderness
series, one of which was sold to a couple from Adelaide. Having such a huge art market here also gives

Describe your current work.
An exhibition called Shine, combined with local sculpture opens mid
September at a public art space in Roeselare, a nearby town and Quintessence
‘09 in October is in the wonderful medieval space of the Bruges Belfry with
four other local artists. The Belfry is the tower featured in the movie In Bruges.
We have a permanent exhibition at the Dukes Palace Kempinski Hotel with
good sales and recently large paintings have been sold to clients in
Melbourne, The Hague, London, Dubai, Paris and locally. I work in acrylic. The
large works are about 1.5m x 2m or a triptych is up to 2.4 metres long.
Describe life outside art.
When Dianne is not busy working on the art marketing, the web site,
graphics, the sculpture garden, running the gallery six days a week, and
dabbling in photography as this region is so picture perfect, we have little
spare time although we recently managed two weeks in Tuscany.
There’s music on our doorstep so I go to concerts, Dianne loves to catch up
on shopping at the amazing summer and winter sales, and we jump in the car
and head off to Lille, just over the French border, for a fabulous Parisian style
bistro lunch or head off to the northern beaches of France for some fresh sea
air.
Our dog Remi has been very ill this year so winter skiing or travelling was
not an option. Instead lots of walking and day trips. Remi is now back to normal
and having a wonderful café lifestyle which is very dog friendly
What about the future?
I cannot imagine not painting, having an open gallery, meeting people who
love my work, exploring new places which provides constant inspiration.
Ideally the future would be four months in Australia, four months here and four
months on a sub tropical island somewhere. But I did say ideally.

DID JOCELYN AND RAY SMITH SEECHANGE AFTER THIRTY YEARS OFCALIFORNIA-DREAMIN’ HUSTLE-
BUSTLE? YOU BETCHA.
There’s nothing like a love story to set the
scene. Jocelyn was on her way back from
Australia to see her parents in South Africa
via California, London and Paris but only got as
far as Los Angeles, arriving in time for a Christmas
party at her brother’s house in Laguna Beach. It
was there she met Ray.
“Kapow, it was electric,” recalls Jocelyn who
like Ray was a young, struggling student. “He was
at the Art Center studying industrial design and
I designed and made clothes from hand-painted
silk for a boutique in Laguna Beach. We married
and lived in LA for 30 years.”
Jocelyn’s first encounter with Australia was for
three years in 1973, enjoying the surfing culture
of Whale Beach and Palm Beach, north of Sydney,
sharing a beach house and meeting the crew
from Tracks magazine, many of whom are still
friends today.
Ray formed a

California, designed
consumer products for

spa industries. “Plus

Jocelyn, adding he’s also created corporate

“LA in the 80s and 90s was a party.
We used to hang out at the Nucleus
Nuance jazz club/restaurant on Melrose
Avenue, see film stars, mobsters, top
musicians and going to Power Tool, an
underground multi-sensory happening at
the Grand Hotel in Lafayette Park.”
The Smiths lived in Echo Park, Silverlake,
found a run-down, bank-owned mid-
century house overlooking the city in Los
Feliz, renovated it into a magic hideaway in
the Hollywood Hills, spent 10 years in a
wonderful community and raised Molly who’s
now 15.
Susan Andrews, a realtor described the1950’s
modern California property which was lined with king palms and pine trees as:
“Sited on a knoll, up a gated driveway…an exquisite shangri-la retreat. The very
private mini estate features expansive tropical grounds, large pool with cabana,
incredible SE views of the city and an elegantly-styled residence which exuded an
exotic West Indies flair.”
When Molly was born, Jocelyn gave up the fast pace and high pressure of the
fashion industry and embraced the world of fairies: “I dressed Molly and her friends
in lavish fairy regalia and really enjoyed the re-emergence of childhood fantasies.
I had a small studio in our commercial building in Pasadena, where I made and
sold fairy clothing, art and memorabilia plus exotic crowns for moms’ special
occasions.
After thirty years the Smiths sought a sea-change, looking at the California
coast from San Diego to Santa Barbara, which was appealing, but Noosa was
better. “We visited Noosa in 2005 (Ray’s first time), enjoyed the character, charm,
surfing, beaches, forests and local style. We also visited Yillingup in WA and loved
that too. “We came back the following year, this time just to Noosa, with the idea
of maybe making it our future home. We liked the idea of bush/beach lifestyle,
explored the hinterland, returned to LA with a plan to return one day. That day
came sooner than we thought.”
On the outskirts of Noosa the Smiths found a Queenslander perched on 10
acres with rolling lawns, pool, rainforest, fairy glen and dam, however it was under-
sized for their needs. The “woodsy” look had to go and the new lavender kitchen
would hopefully meld into the renovations which would be in simpatico with
existing open-plan character.
They added a bedroom pavilion connected by a breezeway and continued the
verandah, the new shed will house their design studio and the rejigged living area
has morphed into a gallery-like space – perfect for their cleverly arranged,
amazing and eclectic collections of natural curiosities and furniture from all over
the world. Ray is working on strategic branding for local businesses, product
design for a company in WA and developing a line of hi-style, lo-tech products for
the food culture market.
Ray and Jocelyn have met a cool group of friends, enjoy having drinks at the
surf club and dinners at each others homes. The contrast to their past is dramatic.
They now live in a world of green with rich bird life and nature all around. The
atmosphere is relaxed, Ray wears boardies and flip flops to work and Jocelyn’s
theatre of dreams – her fairy studio is about to become a reality so Noosa girls can
become a queen or a princess, even just for a day.

Initially Sarah wanted her own exhibition space however the reaction from
like-minded creative souls and the opportunity to think outside the square, had
her hooked on a feeling.
“I was always intimidated by galleries and loved the idea of having a place
where I could hang my works as well as a relaxed and friendly environment for
emerging artists to come and show their work,” says Sarah who’s a Virgoan, has
been an active blogger since 2005 and uses many mediums. “My current

and street-arty compared to other works which were produced when my
emotions were high and expressed whatever was happening at that time.

Making jewellery is also cathartic for Sarah with black agate, onyx, smoky
quartz and lava pieces displaying a distinctive tag of gorgeousness.

Other locals Sarah likes to foster include Deann Cumner, Leonie Sinclair, Sheryl
Herman, Connor Rigby, Julie Patterson and Neil Gilchrist.
“Neil’s involved with the
Peregian Beach Surf Club
and anything related to
Peregian Beach,” extols
Sarah, adding sinc is derived
from ‘Sarah Inc’, “Poetry
readings, sketching in the
dunes, playing his guitar
and singing in the
evenings…he’s a lovely
man and such a character.
He scratches onto whatever

originals are far too
sentimental to part with,
prints are made and framed.
“Diana Harris is an amazing
woman. Always ready to
help and constantly looking
for new ideas. One minute
we’re talking and next she’s
off producing stunning
pieces. I stock her Scamps’
range of children’s soft toys
exclusively, ditto her Milk
range which uses indigenous fabrics and is designed to help babies and
toddlers with hand and eye coordination. Plus her stunning, light as a feather but
incredibly eye-catching earrings are made in her backyard from Melaleuca twigs
and hand painted rice paper.”
Doodlebugs’ creator and young mother Tani Klein was looking for a stylish
alternative to generic princess posters for her children’s room, so devised a series
of black and white paintings to stimulate a newborn bub’s senses. As a teacher
Tani was aware that newborn babies cannot see until they’re about six months
old, when they respond best to bold, contrasting colours and graphics thus
helping eyesight and brain development. These initial designs spawned the
Doodlebug line of children’s clothing.
Greg Drew’s Ajanta Cave scorched-finish silver jewellery is aptly engraved ‘just
gorgeous’; Gwen’s Black Button tea towels and napery are made with organic
linens while dress patterns and old pianola rolls are turned into cards; fair trade
items from Bangladesh include jute bags and baskets for a multitude of uses; the
Perfect Potion skin and body care range is the largest on the Coast;
photographic images by Gillian Cumming of her stay here in Noosa are
stunning; and Dinosaur Designs’ jewellery and homewares include the new
Funghi range.
Sarah has Keats and Wordsworth by her bed, is a dab hand in the kitchen
favouring fabulous stir fries and pasta dishes, and is committed to stocking items
with the utmost integrity hence her motto of Trading Ethically.
She is totally enamoured with life in the village and is looking forward to the
Peregian Beach Festival which co-incides with Mental Health Week and the free
hugs campaign. This has been embraced by other retailers, will remind everyone
to hug more and not to take life for granted.

FROM ECCENTRIC TO EXPENSIVE, BIZARRETO BEAUTIFUL, EVERYTHING UNDER THE
SUN IS CONSIDERED COLLECTIBLE BYSOMEONE.
People are rediscovering collecting and you
don’t have to go to the Guinness World
Records - we’re surrounded by so many who
like to think it adds heart and soul to their lives.
Carol Munroe’s effervescent personality belies her
behind-the-scenes collectorama, although chatting to
her over a glass of wine you might be under the
impression that during her checkered career, she only
collected friends and colleagues. Such is her
magnetism.
Carol Silk as she was known, began in the fashion
industry in Melbourne, had a son, was a freelance
fashion designer, moved to Sydney as a fashion stylist
and production co-ordinator, lived on a yacht for five
years with hubby Robert, imported and retailed
antique furniture and artifacts from the East and
moved to Noosa in 2002.
Thirty years ago Carol says she started collecting
bears when her son Josh moved to Melbourne from
Sydney, to finish his last two years of schooling: “He left
me his bear and a couple of years later when Robert
and I had been sailing during the Christmas period, he
presented me with a small bear – not antique or old as
in pre-loved unfortunately, but on closer inspection I
found an antique heart ring tucked under its arm. It
was destiny. I was meant to collect bears.
“Two bears were given to us as wedding presents,
my favourite is an antique English bear bought at
auction in 1979 and my collection totals nearly 150.
This is about how many can be accommodated in the
large display cabinet made by Robert and located in
the garage. I think control was on his mind at the time
so no more room equals no more bears.”
Collecting dogs is another passion although the
‘breed’ has to be extra good looking with a
contemporary nature and because of varying sizes
and mediums ‘housing’ them has to be carefully
considered. Clutter is not in the vocabulary nor part of
the interior design of the Munroe’s home.
“Collecting dogs just evolved from a love of them,”
effuses Carol, whose favourite is definitely Mack, the
wonder dog heeler who must wonder where all the
bears and four-footed competition comes from,
although he’d much prefer a ball. “My Gordon Richards’
painting called Snowy, the Tin Tin dog is the favourite
for different reasons.
“Although my collecting days are well over…well
that is, except for my collection of ducks, birds and
many photo albums which showcase life from 1942
and is of course ongoing.
“I have never been able to part with any of my
collections. They all accompany us wherever we live.
They are so much a part of the family and I’ve never
been temped to sell, swap or exchange with other
collectors. It’s purely a personal thing that I love.”

Researchers at
Melbourne’s
Monash University
have confirmed what
many dog owners might
respectfully suggest they
already know: the ideal
companion dog is friendly,
obedient, healthy, good with children, fully house-
trained - and affectionate to its owners.
But dig a little deeper, and researcher Ms Tammie
King, says that significant differences exist between
what men and women considered the ideal dog.
“Women preferred male dogs, are willing to
spend more time grooming their ideal dog and
want a calm and compliant dog. Men preferred
female dogs, are likely to spend more money to
maintain their ideal dog and are looking for a dog
that is energetic, faithful and protective. Men also
wanted larger dogs and preferred purebred dogs
that are physically impressive to look at,”
“I am not about to enter the minefield of what
this might say about men or women - but it was
statistically significant across the 877 research
participants,” Ms King said.
Other findings from the research included:
The type of dog (purebred, mixed or designer
breed) was unimportant to 42.9% of respondents,
although 40.6% indicated that their ideal dog would
be purebred, while mixed breeds were preferred
(12.8%) over designer dogs (3.0%);
Over three quarters of respondents (75.8%) said
that their ideal dog would be acquired as a puppy;
Overall, the most popular hair type for dogs was
short and straight (29.0%), but 23.0% of people said
that hair type was unimportant;
Most people (64.7%) said that the dog’s coat
colour was unimportant; 39.7% of respondents
wanted a medium size dog of 10 to 20 kg, with large
dogs coming second at 27.3%;
Just over a third of respondents (35.1%) indicated
the cost to maintain their ideal dog was
unimportant but almost as many (33.6%) indicated
their ideal dog would cost between $11 to $20 a
week to maintain;
The vast majority of
participants (78.9%)
indicated they would
prefer to spend
between 16 and 60
minutes exercising
their dog per day;
75.5% said they
wanted to spend
between 1 and 30
minutes grooming
their ideal dog per
week; and most
respondents (66.4%) wanted their ideal dog to be
desexed.
According to the Petcare Information and
Advisory Service (PIAS), these results match with
recent research that identified Australia’s most
popular breeds and size of dog.
“In 2006, the National People and Pets Survey
identified Australia’s top three dog breeds as the
Kelpie, the Border Collie and the Maltese and 43% of
dog owners in the survey owned medium size
dogs,” said Susie Willis from PIAS.
“The research actually reveals some key issues
that we believe could improve the relationships
owners have with their dogs,” said Ms King.
“Many participants listed obedience as a key
characteristic for the ideal dog but only 3.6% of
people listed trainability as an important
characteristic, while around 20% of participants
believed that some dogs could not be trained. We
found this rather surprising as all dogs can be
trained to some extent, and there is a direct link
between the amount of training an owner does and
the obedience of a dog.
“Educating dog owners about the characteristics
of different dogs and their behaviours is likely to
help reduce the incidence of problem behaviours,
such as separation anxiety, destructiveness or
aggression. It is also likely to increase owner
satisfaction and reduce the number of dogs
relinquished to shelters,”
“The research clearly showed that the Australian
public does not judge a dog primarily by its physical
characteristics. We were heartened to see that
behavioural characteristics, as well as health, are
recognized as important in determining the ideal
dog for most people,” Ms King concluded.

Every niche of Evergreen is buzzing withenergy and filled with must-haves.
Some say Evergreen’s long meandering alley-way set on
slightly different levels is reminiscent of an Italian village.
Perhaps shades of Mexico. The elements of Balinese-style
architecture, artistically-twisted ironwork, and water features that
‘weep’ through black stone walls, drip via taps into ponds or
bubble from cauldron-like urns, also add flavour to the inward-
looking design.
Evergreen, which will
soon have an artists’ co-
op, is a destination that
will have you coming
back for more.
The natural style and
ambience make people
feel good. Wander
through, ogle at the
beautiful shops with
some merchandise
being displayed so temptingly near doorways, take in the aromas
and you’ll instantly embrace the village atmosphere.
Terracotta, mustard, sand and other earthy hues provide
backdrops for statues including buddhas and in Blue Ginger, the
restaurant’s dominant feature is an alung alung, which brings the
outdoors in.
Blue Ginger’s innovative quality was recognized at the
Restaurant & Catering Queensland Sunshine Coast Awards for
Excellence, winning the Best Informal Dining Restaurant award
and it’s easy to see why. From breakfast through to lunch every
day it powers, catering to all tastes and appetites from coffee,
cake and organic grain sour dough sandwiches to salads, risotto,
duck, salt and pepper calamari or fish of the day. Catering is also
a specialty.
Pam and Ray Miller from The Briary know about beautiful
things. Artist Pam trained at the National Art School in Sydney,
and has been painting for over 30 years. She often paints artworks
to match The Briary’s lounges, and works in with the customer’s
taste and style.
There are beautiful plants, especially roses. Not surprising, since
Pam and Ray had a huge rose nursery in country NSW and when
they came to Noosa, their roses and extensive knowledge came
too.
Beautiful lounges are a main feature. John, a local designer
makes them in the same tradition as the best craftsmen in
Europe. He builds the frames, hand ties the springs, adds the
foam and covers them in beautiful fabrics.
There’s also a range of vintage lounges which have been
lovingly restored to former glory.
Julie and Victor Ferdinando’s Suba Havana is a yoga and
meditation centre, where calming the mind, strengthening the
body and opening the heart are of paramount importance.
“Meditation is based on the ancient tradition of kashmir
shaivism - yoga of the self – a method for liberation and self
realization,” says Victor who also stocks inspirational books and
conducts weekly meditation programs, daily yoga classes,
monthly poojas and introductions to meditation programs.
“Keeping in touch with the inner self is the key to a happy life and
through meditation we continue to access the love, peace,
wisdom and bliss that resides within.”
When it comes to an Italian beauty spot, Rachella Battelini’s

and loves to chat about his bamboo furniture, outdoor accessories, custom furniture,

furnishings, hand crafted tables, curtains, blinds, sofas, homewares such as glassware and
ceramics, gift ideas and fun cards, murals and wallpaper. Yes, it’s back especially decals
which not only transform a room but with a plethora of designs from contemporary and
floral to Japanese add another dimension to a room or complement existing artwork. Tim,
who has many catalogues of decals to choose from says adding one to a shower screen

ince completing his degree, young Melbourne
industrial designer Corey Baker gained
experience from an automotive clay modelling
career with GM Holden Design in Australia and the US,
and at Jaguar and Volkswagen Design centres in
Europe.
His passion for product design, furniture in particular,
led to the launch of Riva limited edition furniture this
year. “Working from my Essendon studio workshop, I
create limited edition commission designs with the
desire of bringing a refreshing personality and timeless
elegance to contemporary furniture through functional
designs with a sculptural visual presence,” explains
Corey whose bamboo Lofoten lounger design won the
award for VIVID Best Commercial Design 2009 at the
Furnitex exhibition and his Float Wine Dais design in
Australian recycled Jarrah was short-listed.
The Lofoten Lounger with laminated counter-
tension bamboo supports, is combined with stainless
steel features to create a strong yet visually lightweight,
striking sculptural lounger. Thoughtful fanned
positioning of these supports create the curvaceous
form, ensuring optimal comfort and vital lumbar
support.
Ecologically sustainable and renewable bamboo is
naturally oiled and complemented by intertwined
stainless steel features, making this versatile lounger
ideal for many environments. The lounger is designed
for indoor/outdoor room environments, however if
continually use outside it will require regular oiling.
The Float Wine Dais’ asymmetric yet balanced lattice
design provides the unexpected strength required to
support the 'floating' solid table. Allowing for random
positioning of wine bottles and other homewares, this
expressive piece employs both traditional and
innovative construction techniques.
The depth and rich beauty of the recycled Australian
Jarrah used in this piece is enhanced with a natural oil
finish and fine stainless steel detail.

When clients approached Warren Naylor to transform their new residence he was flattered. Starting
with a blank canvas and integrating old and new elements had been part of previous interior
design briefs. He felt immediately at home.
The masterpiece, designed by renowned Brisbane architect Richard Kirk, is part of Noosa’s Elysium enclave
where architecture is the key driver for the amenity and quality of the environment and the entire
development. Located on a ridge along the west of the development, with views to the rear into extant
landscape and golf course beyond, the topography allowed the garaging to occur below grade with living
spaces on the ground and sleeping spaces above.
Occupying the majority of the allowable building envelope, the house provides an internal focus visually
and functionally and the carved-out two storey volume in the centre allows volumes of light and ventilation

throughout the interior. Seamless transitions on the lower level connect
living spaces, and the bedrooms and study on the second level, were
conceived by the architect as nests that float above the ground to
provide a bird’s eye view of below.
“It resembles a giant timber crate from the street and the exterior
view down the heated black-tiled lap pool shows the simple lines,” says
Warren whose company is Add+ Noosa. “The entire house is clad in
western red cedar which is low maintenance, will eventually turn a
wonderful silver colour and is offset by a restrained palette of zinc and
self-finished oxide renders.”
Cross-cut maple, shadow-line detailing and travertine floors softened
by striped Moroccan rugs, flowing from the front to the rear entrance
are low upkeep and augmented by only natural finishes and mostly
Add+ furnishings.
Mister Wolfhound loves to loll around in the north-facing living room,
which is dominated by a three metre Malibu sofa and a Japanese
Kuruma chest on wheels, that along with old wooden wheels on stands
in the winter room and modern calligraphy panels, have been collected
under Warren’s guidance, over a ten year period.

rear garden, and is dominated by an over-scale Sarita head. Rattan
Moon chairs surround antique solid bronze rain drums and are
adorned with bonsais, the outdoor table is from Add+ and the chairs
have the distinctive moniker of
Phillipe Starck.
Taking centre-stage in the
family room is a custom-made
sofa embellished by African mud
cloth cushions, a Circa 1820
Japanese stockhouse door which
Warren had converted to a coffee
table for displaying memorabilia
plus a rug which he also
designed.
In the master bedroom, the
custom-made Citi bed, dressed in
Westbury linen, and the Circa
1880 Dansu chests used as beside tables, give the appearance
of floating on the spotted gum polished floor boards.
The colour palette of black, white and brown epitomises
Warren’s design mantra of keeping it simple plus easy care,
luxe but liveable and always earthing contemporary with old.

We hit it off straight away and now work as a fantastic team.” Thepartners in business as well as life, made the sea-change to Noosaeight years ago and built Namale (meaning ‘to live with passion’), a
magnificent Balinese-inspired home and gardens in Doonan.
Next challenge: Sunshine Beach, known as a great area for long terminvestment, a fact backed up in the latest Property magazine, which ranked it inthe top five of the nation’s best performing suburbs.
“With beautiful beaches, a stylish air and great village vibe, we couldn’tthink of a better area. When the opportunity presented itself we decided to gowith it. “Each apartment has been masterfully designed to encapsulate anindividual mood,” explains Tania Hindmarsh about the two residences at WeybaOne Four and the two residences at 20 on Weyba. “Vibrant colours, gleamingfinishes, plus furniture and fittings sourced from around the globe, shriek ofsplendour - an impression complemented by premium-quality naturalmaterials such as stone-stacked feature walls and red cedar flooring. Koi ponds, splash pools and spas - natural additions to the tropical gardens, bring theoutdoors in.”
Tania says she draws inspiration from life: “There are so many beautifulplaces even nature itself to admire, touch and smell – lots of memories thatfuse. Tania and Charlie’s favourite holiday destination is Bali where they feel sorelaxed and enjoy being indulged in what is their idea of heaven, however it’sthe finer aspects of Asia that can be seen in the detail of the exteriors andinteriors. “I prefer to call the flavour modern Asian,” describes Tania. “Thecontinent brims over with amazing architecture and fabulous natural materials.Such clever creative people, beautiful scenery and lush outdoor living.
“We wanted to bring that feeling into these boutique apartments - acombination of great design, mood, passion and soul to Sunshine Beach withits similar climate. Colours are also an integral part and should transcend awarm emotion as soon as you step inside.“I’ve designed or handpicked the furniture for each of the four apartments toensure an individual wow-factor look.
“Stone and timber are very important elements giving warmth, interestand grounding. It is almost impossible. It has to be personally
experienced - absorbed - and then released by the
person them self.
Such is the almost impossible task before me.
We have recently returned from a trip to Tropical North
Queensland and the picture-perfect village of Palm Cove. An
idyllic setting for those wishing to escape the corporate
hype and worries of the world. Whether you come alone,
with a partner, family or friends, you will experience a
spectacular, laid-back adventure without any cares or
worries.
The tiny hamlet by the Coral Sea, with its buildings
constructed carefully around ancient Melaleuca trees, many
of which are over 300-years-old (and were duly noted in the
logs of Captain James Cook); is full of friendly people, many
of whom had previously holidayed in the region - fell in love
with the ambience and lifestyle, and then decided on a total
sea-change from the bustle of city life.
One of the biggest highlights of Palm Cove is the fact that
the streets are almost devoid of traffic, and there are no
parking meters or inspectors waiting to pounce. Just the
golden sands of the beach spotted with beach umbrellas
and framed by hundreds of swaying coconut palms that
almost seem to be paying homage to the gentle vista of the
Coral Sea, and the tantalising tropical breezes that wash over
the area. It is easy to succumb to thoughts of distant times
and the exotic locations of romantic novels.
With Palm Cove's residential and holiday accommodation
designers choosing to restrict limits to low-rise, and the
buildings all seeming to support a similar style, utilising a
palette of peaceful white and neutral tones, shuttered
windows, ocean blue swimming pools, and an almost
Singaporean style of architecture; it is no wonder that the
whole effect is pleasing to the soul as well as the eye,
The township offers a wide variety of boutique shopping,
art galleries, a travel centre, delicatessen, post office, corner-
store, ice-cream shop, as well as a selection of restaurants
and cafes to delight diners. Whether you choose fine dining
or casual fare the options are inviting. There is even a late
night bar with karaoke for those in the party mood. All you
could ever need.
In the daytime, just as at night, visitors and locals are happy
to take time to casually stroll along the esplanade beside the
shoreline, as they meander towards the jetty, which eases
out into the water. At night, with no city hubbub, the stars
overhead, subtle street lighting and reflections from
curtained windows, the only vestiges of illumination,
combine to create a totally romantic backdrop.
On our visit we stayed at the beautiful Sebel Reef House
and Spa, a high-end interpretation of a quality guest-house
of yesteryear. Don't be fooled by the term - this is a 4.5 star
property all the way, featuring every luxury a guest could
ever desire, including an Exclusive Day Spa offering a
sanctum of relaxation and pampering, including a full menu
of massages and beautiful spa products, adjacent to the
larger tropical swimming pool and waterfall.
The Reef House property has a long and illustrious history.
It was originally built in 1958 by a Cairns bookmaker as his
family home. When purchased by its second owner in 1972
Brigadier The Hon. D. S. Thompson MC, RL and his wife Judy
Thompson. The property, aptly named The Reef House, was
used by them as a private residence for their family. Later
they decided to welcome a select clientele including several
politicians to their home, where they were treated like family,
and the property became a quality guest house.
Today from the manicured streetscape entrance, guests
enter through the white columned portico with its sentinel

Melaleuca trees, (one of which was recently officially verified
to be 500 years old) to be greeted by the friendly staff at the
24 hour reception area.
The property offers all the amenities a discerning guest
could require, with rooms exuding tropical chic; crisp white
bedding, plump pillows, draped white mosquito nets; lime
and sage accents, shuttered windows and large balconies
(several with large round spas on the private terrace);
complimentary book and board game library; guest laundry;
lush tropical gardens; conference & meeting facilities; three
swimming pools and two spas & waterfall.
With only 69 rooms and suites available, The Reef House
maintains the relaxed feel of a small, sophisticated hotel, but
with all the luxuries you would expect from a larger
establishment.
With its fine white vertical paneling, accentuated by rattan
backed chairs and white fans overhead, low-lying divans and
lounge chairs, and huge candlelight wheels suspended from
the roof the hotel beckons guests to relax...
Reef House is extremely popular with the boutique
wedding market, with guests finding a perfect haven for
nuptials on the beach followed by gourmet candle-light
dining by the enclosed pool area.
To the right of the entrance portico with its uninterrupted
view of the Coral Sea and passing pedestrian parade, sits The
Reef House's award-winning restaurant, which has been the
domain of ex-Noosa chef, Philip Mitchell for over 8 years now
(he worked with Leoni Palmer in Noosa 10 years ago). Phil
has created an eclectic menu that features some of the
region's finest, seafood, meats, dairy and produce. This is
where diners come to sample the best that Tropical North
Queensland has to offer - Fresh Blue Swimmer crab salad, the
crispy spatchcock, the freshly shucked oysters with balsamic
and lemon - the banana mille-feuille, the luscious sorbets.
Absolutely anything on the restaurant's exciting menu.
The friendly, capable staff offer menu and wine guidance
with a smile and good cheer.
Sitting on the front deck of open air restaurant, reclining on
the padded banquettes under the Melaleuca trees with the
warm breeze and a cool drink.... here it is possible to spend
morning, afternoon and night - dining, resting and enjoying
the ambience.
The Reef House also holds regular Chefs on the Reef
cooking classes, lunches and dinners with visiting celebrity
chefs. Recently they have hosted events with ‘Surfing the
Menu’s’ - Ben O'Donoghue and Master Chef’s Gary Mehigan.
In keeping with the original concept of the property,
another highlight of any stay at The Reef House is the
Brigadier's Bar, which takes pride-of-place in the guests'
relaxation lounge, and still runs on the honour system, just
like a real officers' mess, At any time of the day or night,
guests are free to choose a drink from the bar, and simply
place their name and room number on a chit for billing later.
And, each evening promptly at 5pm the candles are lit to
signal twilight, and a large silver punch bowl is delivered
containing a complimentary, nightly-changing, alcoholic
tropical punch accompanied by a cheese platter. Guests are
free to mingle and get to know each other, and the General
Manager Chris Northam makes an effort to be there as often
as possible.
Many friendships have been formed over the years in the
Brigadier's Bar, whilst contemplating the gentle cascading of
the waterfall over the pool, discussing the wonders of the
Cove,,, but unfortunately our dream escape must end. A
quick look through the guests comment book shows how
much visitors come to love The Reef House and its friendly
staff. It is almost like a second home.
Until next time.

Gone are the days when cookingoutdoors meant standing around thetrusty barbecue and watching meat

Summer days, balmy nights and outdoor entertaining heats up. Are you
ready for it and do you have a suitable al fresco area? Have you dreamed
about replicating something you’ve seen on television or somewhere on
your travels? Perhaps you’re inspired by pages in glossy mags and celebrity cook
books. But where do you start and is your idea feasible?
Why not have the design fashioned by local Brendan Weatherill, who is a well
known chef and respected culinary project management consultant both
locally and overseas. He certainly knows first hand about grills and ovens –
indoors and out - skills he has honed from travels to over 30 countries and
inspired by places he has worked.
Brendan’s forte is designing or re designing functional and practical outdoor
kitchens for hotels and
corporations, on super yachts, in
private villas and luxury condos, in
restaurants and homes. “The
diversity and combination of
themes is endless and malleable
to any person’s taste,” he explains.

A Chinese

of the many designs
he’s currently
incorporating into an
entertaining area: “The landscape design is created around the cultural
theme, with Chinese bushes and herbs combined with rock and water
features and bonsai plants.” Brendan believes that landscaping and food
presentation are similar: flow, angles, height, colours and planning.
Pizza ovens are great for cooking anything especially whole fish. Stuff
your fish with the desired ingredients to entice aromas. Encase it into a
formed salt mortar-like mixture of rock salt and whipped egg whites then
bake it to achieve moist, flavoursome perfection.
Smoking ovens can be simply attached to the outdoor oven to allow for
smoking meat before it is cooked or giving seafood such as hickory-
smoked veal or tea-smoked oysters a unique flavour. The oven is also
fantastic for slow cooking marinated meats such as Balinese-style duck,
marinated in chilli and ginger, wrapped in bark, surround with rice husk
over hot coals and a hot rock base then cooked for hours.
Wood-fired Rotisserie ovens with manual or powered, turning
mechanisms. are perfect for roasting meats. Paella pans, oversized woks and
Moroccan tagines are also perfect for cooking outside. Mongolian plates
with wok burners are adaptable and Japanese Tappan Char grills allow the
cook to display culinary techniques.
Today’s outdoor entertaining also means removable and

different cooking

THE ENCHANTING SPIDERY CLUSTEREDFLOWERS WITH FERNY FOLIAGE ARE
MEMBERS OF AMAZING PROTEAFAMILY.
Ranging from forest giants to ground hugging
shrubs, grevilleas come in a wide colour
assortment from yellow and white to orange
and red. Over 230 known species and countless
hybrids and cultivars are without peer as trouble
–free plants, are generous with flowers, love the sun
and most suited to subtropical climes. Pruning after
flowering keeps them within bounds.
Outside Noosa’s landscaping legend John Scomparin says grevilleas can
be used extensively: “They are an Australian native notable for colourful
flowers and attracting honey-eating birds; fast-growing – within six months
a new plant is well established; quite drought tolerant; and commonly used
for a fast screening.
“They don’t require a lot of fertiliser and specialist growers recommend
pruning late May and late November. Cutting back by about one third
means scruffy plants can be rejuvenated.”
John suggests the popular Grevillea Moonlight, a cultivar about five metres
high which has long spikes of beautiful creamy white flowers for most of the
year. “Ground cover grevilleas I like to use are Grevillea Lanigera or ‘Mt
Tamboritha Form’, a densely foliaged, dwarf plant, and Grevillea ‘Poorinda
Royal Mantle’. Grevilleas are in flower for most of the year, however winter to
early spring they are at their peak.”
Garden design guru Phillip O’Malley lives in the Noosa Hinterland on
acreage, so is well versed with growing majestic tree grevilleas. “If you have a
good sized garden consider Grevillea Robusta, silky oak,” he says. “It’s
smothered in amazing orange-yellow flowers on bare branches in spring
and looks spectacular alongside jacarandas. Grevillea Pinnatifida, a sweet
silky oak, is a lush rainforest tree with beautiful foliage and honey-sweet
flowers; Grevillea Hilliana, or hills silky oak is another pretty rainforest tree
with gorgeous foliage and flowers.
“While grevilleas attract nectar-feeding birds, be aware that planting too
many brings the noisy miners, who will chase, bully and harass all other birds.
Best grow grevilleas in moderation.”

Peace Train The Cat Stevens Story...
A CELEBRATION OF ONE OF THEGREATEST SONGWRITERS OF ALL TIME
“Cat Stevens. The name brings back a thousand
memories -- dark eyes, a winning voice - and songs the
whole world sang to. Back in the 70s he was the ultimate
rock star. Talented, charismatic, with a seemingly endless
succession of beautiful melodies streaming from his
imagination. He sold more than 60 million albums, earned
enough money to last several lifetimes, and enjoyed all the
trappings of fame. But he wanted more out of life. So at the
height of his career he shocked the world by taking his last
bow. The music stopped and Cat Stevens was no more,”
said Andrew McKinnon. “Whatever became of the man
who wrote some of the most poignant songs of our time -
Father and Son, Moon Shadow and Where do the Children
Play? Why did he turn his back on the world?”
“This show is a night of music and story-telling, which will
strike a chord deep inside the heart of anyone who longs
for something more; a journey back in time, recreating the
sights and sounds, seeking out the man in the music and
telling the story behind the songs.”
One of Australia's most exciting young artists Darren
Coggan, backed by the high-energy live band, Fire Cats, will,
over two electrifying performances in Brisbane, take
audiences on a truly magical ride of discovery, back
through the joys and the sorrows, the triumphs and the
pain, in the life of the legend that was the one and only, Cat
Stevens.
Featuring 23 of the songs the whole world sang along
with, including Father & Son, Lady D'arbanville, Morning Has
Broken, The Old School Yard, On The Road To Find Out, Wild
World, Where Do The Children Play, Moonshadow, Matthew
& Son, Hard Headed Woman, Sad Lisa, Peace Train and
many, many more.

ARTIST, JULIA CARTER CONTINUED TO EXPAND HER HORIZONS THISYEAR WITH A MOVE TO A NEW GALLERY, SALES TO A WIDENINGGLOBAL COLLECT BASE, AND A PERSONAL ART ‘PILGRIMAGE’ TO
PREPARE FOR A SOLO EXHIBITION.
This journey took her first to the Dubai Art Fair, then to the Tates and
National Galleries in London where she visited the Blake and Picasso
Exhibitions, before heading on to Amsterdam and the Van Gogh Museum.
She found the work of Van Gogh, in particular, deeply meaningful and returned
time and again to absorb and reflect on the soul and simple beauty radiating
from his work. Back in Noosa, Julia explored her reflections both metaphorically
and literally before translating her inspiration to canvas.
Her personal journey involved the exploration of spiritual literature and the
discovery of the many metaphors nature provides for life and the way we live it.
Her new body of work reflects on Synchronicity, and asks: is it coincidence, or do
unrelated events happen for a single special reason?
Inspiration is everywhere, surrounded as she is by our natural coastal beauty,
and it is Noosa’s immediate surroundings that feature heavily in the new series.
Julia says the Everglades in particular could inspire a ‘lifetime of paintings’. She
described her experience of this area as “feeling as if she were in a hall of mirrors
whose angles created a hypnotic, almost surreal tranquillity”. To present the
magical feeling and ethereal essence of what she experiences, Julia incorporates
shimmer and embellishment to reflect and layer light.
At times, Julia appears to almost play with paint and effects, applying them
with unorthodox tools like knives in bold, rich and luscious layers. She
incorporates symbols such birds, trees, leaves and butterflies to represent
elements of life’s journey and says her aim is always to produce a unique
painting that will captivate its owner. Julia’s new works are truly stunning –
intricately detailed and beautifully executed. Anyone seeing them will find
themselves with every good reason to stop and reflect.
‘Synchronicity’ runs from September 18th to 23rd at Jive Art, Gallery 1/37

Of Track, Tides and TerritoriesNew Works by Pam Walpole at Lasting Impressions Gallery -
Pam Walpole, a highly regarded painter is showing new works at Lasting
Impressions Gallery in Kenilworth from 20th September to 4th October.
The exhibition follows Pam into the Interior from scrubby creek to open plains
along the Oodnadatta track, following the route of the Old Ghan railway line
whose remnants lie scattered in the desert. Flying over of the Flinders Ranges
and nearby salt lakes where shimmering surfaces are crisscrossed with
calligraphic markings of tracks leading nowhere, Pam presents us with a rare
birds-eye view of this dramatic landscape.
Back along the coast, Pam captures the reflections and tidal marks of estuaries
and inlets along the shoreline. With bold expressive brushstrokes and a minimal
palette and style Pam portrays the essence of the land she loves, drawing the
viewer in for closer inspection. Often, Pam’s work is her response to the
destruction of the land – whether by nature through drought, flood and fire or
by man in his never-ending quest for development.
‘Pam is a keen observer of the landscape from vast open spaces of the inland
to the delicate patterns found in fragments of bush land, on river banks or
created by ocean tides’, says Kaye Cathro, Gallery Director. ‘Her work is much in
demand by many individual as well as corporate clients.’ Works may be viewed

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED, LIKE MANYAUSSIES (AND OUR WONDERFUL OVERSEAS
VISITORS) DO, WHAT IT IS LIKE TO EXPERIENCEA REMOTE ABORIGINAL COMMUNITY?
Well, if you would like the opportunity to take an
‘insiders’ look, then we recommend a visit to
Putipula Gallery in Noosa Junction.Gillian Steel,
the director of the gallery, has recently returned from a two
week visit to Kaltjiti Art (Fregon) - a quick look on ‘Google
Earth’ will give you an idea of just how remote this region is!
Gillian was a volunteer on an ‘Artists as Mentors’ project, and this is her sixth time
as a visitor to the community, making her a welcome guest.
In fact, Gillian represents seven art centres in the remote APY lands in the far
north-west of South Australia, and has the most wonderful artwork on display in
her Putipula Gallery on the Sunshine Coast.
A recent trip to ‘Desert Mob’ in Alice Springs in early September, has cemented
her place - and reflects the quality of the artwork that her gallery has the honour
to represent.
We can now confirm that she will be showcasing the highly collectable works of
Tjungu Palya Arts at Putipula Gallery for the entire month of January.

October, discover rich colours
and delightful stories in new oils
by Lori Pensini as she takes us
on a journey of children
exploring the Australian bush
and its animals at her first solo
Sunshine Coast exhibition.
A successful artist who has
exhibited widely around Australia,
Lori Pensini has recently returned
from an exhibition at Monash University in Italy at Prato near Florence in time to
open her new “Babes in the Woods” exhibition on 27 September at Tiffany Jones
Fine Art Gallery, Buderim.
The “Babes in the Woods” exhibition is based loosely around Lori Pensini’s
favourite bedtime story from the 16th Century of two children that become lost in
the woods in Norfolk England. The children were befriended by animals and were
covered with leaves by birds as they slept. In her new exhibition Lori has adapted
the 16th Century story into a modern Australian fairytale by weaving her
childhood memories into the paintings.
“Growing up on a remote horse farm with two much younger sisters, Lori played
on her own and developed a fervent and fertile imagination as well as a love of
farm and bush animals. With the bush to explore Lori wandered and daydreamed.
The stories told in her new works are depicted from a child’s perspective, giving
them a delightful and touching sense of naivety”, Tiffany said.
From 8 to 29 November, popular artist Denise Daffara presents an exclusive
collection of new canvases entitled “A Golden Thread”. This striking new series has
been inspired by the great painter Gustav Klimt. The paintings feature blissful
women draped in opulent gold and jewel-coloured fabrics that shimmer with eye-
catching sgraffiti designs.
Gallery director, Tiffany Jones said: “Fans of Denise’s vibrant paintings will be
intrigued by this exciting new direction in her work which is available exclusively
at our Buderim gallery”. Denise Daffara’s new paintings will be unveiled on Sunday
8 November at a special champagne opening. Denise will also launch her new
range of prints on canvas at the opening.

a sensitive language with colours...
From a deep-seated love of the ocean comes the inaugural solo
collection of works by emerging coast artist Christopher Hooper aptly
titled groundswell. Working with the palette of light and shade that
Mother Nature has created, Christopher is meticulous with his brush in
recreating the warm glow of a setting sun, the power of the surf against a
rocky shoreline or the amber tones of the banksia flowers.
Christopher has a sensitive language with colours, it is an inner necessity
that he paints and draws us back to the original artists who paint because
the view from sitting on a surfboard and looking back to the shore has
moved him to capture a moment in time, a feeling and a mood on canvas
to share with others.

BRISTOLS at dawn
IS IT A ‘PLANE, IS IT A CAR? WELL, TOBE HONEST, IT’S A BIT OF BOTH. THECAR IN QUESTION - BUILT,ORIGINALLY, IN AN AIRCRAFTFACTORY, USING TOP-QUALITYAVIATION MATERIALS AND CRAFTEDTO THE SAME HIGH STANDARDS ASTHE AEROPLANES OF THE DAY – IS,OF COURSE, THE UBIQUITOUSBRISTOL, ONE OF THE FASTEST,MOST LUXURIOUS AND, WITHOUTDOUBT, CLASSIEST CARS EVER TOROLL OFF A PRODUCTION LINEAND, TODAY, 60 YEARS ON,TREASURED AS ONE OF THEGREATEST CLASSIC CAR MARQUESOF ALL TIME.
Arecord 33 of them – 32 from all over
Australia plus one shipped out
specially from the UK – will descend
on Noosa later this month for what promises
to be the major motoring event of the year,
the Bristol Owners’ Club of Australia bi-annual
National Rally.
The event, timed to coincide with that
other great motoring event of the year, the
Noosa Beach Classic car show – referred to by
locals simply as the Noosa Classic – kicks off
next Monday (21st September) and ends with
a Marque-of-the-Year display at the Classic in
Noosa’s Lions Park on Saturday September
26th.
In between is a programme of events
which will see the 80-odd owners, partners,
enthusiasts and hangers-on dinner-cruising
on the Noosa River on board the MV Catalina,
inspecting the Bristol Beaufort restoration
project at the Caboolture Warplane Museum,
touring the Hinterland, taking tea at historic
Kin Kin, day-tripping to the world-renowned
Buderim Ginger Factory, and visiting the
home of the famous Bowden Family
Collection of 300 memorable Australian
muscle cars, historic racing sedans, sports cars
and automotive memorabilia.
For Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, it is the
story behind the cars which started trickling
out of the Bristol Aircraft factory at Filton, on
the outskirts of Bristol in the south-west of
England in the years following the end of
World War Two, which makes this event so
special. It reads like a Boys’ Own adventure
yarn.
The cars’ legacy dates back to the early
days of WWI when the Bristol Scout,
backbone of the Royal Flying Corps – later to
become the Royal Air Force – first took to the
skies over war-torn Europe, along with its
equally successful sister aircraft the BE-2 and
Fighter biplanes. These successes were
followed up with the between-the-wars
Bulldog fighter and, later, the famous aircraft
of WW2 – the Blenheim and Beaufort
bombers, and the long-range Beaufighter, of
which more than 6,000 were built.
With the end of the war and the decline in
airplane manufacture the company turned its
attention to designing and building long-
range passenger aircraft aimed initially at the
lucrative trans-Atlantic route – the giant
eight-engined Brabazon, which was later
shelved, and its better-known successor, the
turboprop Britannia. At the same time the
company recognised the growing market for
quality hand-crafted automobiles for a new
breed of moneyed and discerning buyers and
started producing aircraft-quality cars which
combined the best of British style with
German functionality (the early Marques were
powered by a derivative of the pre-war BMW
2-litre engine, which was used in all Bristols up
to 1961, after which the more powerful
Chrysler 5.3-litre V8 engine was introduced to
cope with the new cars’ heavier bodywork
and more luxurious trim). At the time, the cars
coming out of the Filton factory were streets
ahead of – and being snapped up for two to
three times the price of - their nearest
competitor, Jaguar.
It was the first of this long line of Bristols
which will form the backbone of next week’s
rally, the line-up for which will feature some of
the finest examples of this classic breed - from
an original 1947 Bristol 400, owned by Noosa
classic car buffs Rob and Marilyn van Wegen,
through a 1961 Bristol 407 from the stable of
one of the country’s biggest private classic car
collectors, Cooroy-based Chris Stafford and
his wife Peggie, to more recent examples of
the long line of graceful, luxurious and high-
powered Bristols, the 410 and 411 of the mid-
to-late 1970s.
In between is a collection of some of the
finest classic cars ever built, including Chris
and Peggie’s 1953 Bristol 403 – without doubt
one of the most beautiful saloon cars ever
built – and Rob and Marilyn’s award-winning
1954 Frazer-Nash replica from the same
stable. Peter Mason

NOOSA CLASSIC SHOW
SUNDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER 2009
Background:
In the late 1980’s times were
tough in Noosa – what with a
pilot’s strike, high interest rates
and a slow down in tourism – so a
group of Hastings Street traders
who also just happened to have a classic car or two tucked
away in their garages decided to hold a car show to spice
up a dull weekend and create a little interest in the street.
And look at what it turned into! From such humble
beginnings the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club was born and
now boasts 200+ members. The Show is advertised
extensively up and down the Australian Eastern Seaboard
and attracts in excess of 4500 spectators on the day to view
250+ classics drawn from over 80 car clubs.
As always, proceeds from the day, after expenses, are
donated to local charities. Last year over $13,000 was
distributed. Be assured, valuable sponsorship dollars assist
the local community greatly. In fact in the 22 years the car
club has been in operation, over $120,000 has been raised
for local charitable causes.

Noosa Historic Hill Climb Saturday 14/Sunday 15 November 2009
Affectionately known as 'The Hill', it all began in 1998 and is run by the Noosa Beach
Classic Car Club and the Historic Racing Car Club (Qld). It has developed into a first class
event with many well known racing personalities from across Australia as well as local
Queensland racing identities all vying to be the fastest on the day.
The Hill is seductively attractive to drivers. Fourteen corners in lightning succession are
a few too many for easy recollection and they all have their tricks. There’s a good hot mix
surface and with automated traffic-light-starting systems, cars get away at intervals of
less than 30 seconds allowing the participants the potential to achieve six runs per day.
