NoosaStyleLiving8

An illustrious career as an elite athlete, motherhood and demanding businesscommitments has made Lisa aware of the importance of life balance. Sherealised the value of motivation at an early age. When she was just 12 Lisa wasrecognised as one the fastest swimmers in the world for her age. She went onto win 15 gold, seven silver and eight bronze international medals. Lisa is theonly Australian swimmer to have held Commonwealth and Australian records

in every stroke except backstroke. She represented Australia 16 times, competed in two WorldChampionships, three Commonwealth Games and three Olympic Games.

Lisa retired from swimming after the 1992 Olympics and threw her energies into surf boatrowing competitions and championship outrigger canoe events. Her team won theQueensland Surf Life Saving Championship in 1996 and the World Championship OutriggerCanoe event four times in 1997, 1998, 2003 and 2004. The team also won the world solochampionship in 2005, they are the only Australian to win this race.

Accolades include an MBE, an OAM, the Australian Sports Medal plus the Centenary Medalfor service to Australian society through swimming. Lisa was inducted into the Sport AustraliaHall of Fame in 1985 and appointed Chair of the National Australia Day Council 2000 by thenPrime Minister John Howard. She held this position she held for eight years and was the firstwoman to be named as Chair. She was named an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the2008 Australia Day Honours.

Lisa was the face of Uncle Tobys Muesli Bars for 23 years, the spokesperson for FernwoodFitness Centres for 10 years. She made P & O Cruises famous in Australia and endorsed 30 Plus,a women's hormonal supplement. Lisa is a sought after speaker and makes numerousappearances at major national and internationally events.

She managed all this and brought up three children with former husband Grant Kenny. Jaimi(26) has a successful career as a photographer and nanny, Morgan (23) is a dancer at the ultrachic Moulin Rouge in Paris and Jett (19) is a professional lifeguard.

This level of achievement might cause some people to rest on their laurels but at 51 Lisashows no signs of slowing down. Now Lisa and her partner Joel Walkenhorst live happily onthe Sunshine Coast when they are not travelling Australia in their Jayco campervan promotinghealth and fitness through the One Life One Chance Aussie Roadtrip and adding to the hugenumber of Kiss Club (Keep It Simple Sweetheart) members.

Lady on amission...

Lisa Curry is an inspiration. Her success in sports and business

hasn’t gone to her head. Lisa is downto earth and as committed to helpingpeople improve their lives through a

healthier lifestyle as she was towinning medals.

Story Catherine Taylor Photography Ian Golding

Lisa says life as an elite athlete is short so it is important to haveother options. “I have always been conscious of choosing thingsthat I enjoy. I enjoy travel, camping, exercise and living a healthylifestyle,” she says. “My latest career pursuits combine all of theseand I have the added satisfaction of helping people find a healthyway of life.

“Obesity is the single biggest threat to public health in Australia. It is the leading cause of premature death and illness. The One Life,Once Chance Aussie Roadtrip visits regional and rural Australiantowns so local people have the chance to learn more about healthand fitness one on one from Lisa.

“We hold a range of activities in each town. These usuallyinclude community exercise sessions and a free public seminarwhere people are shown how to lose weight, get fit and improvetheir health, anywhere, anytime and on any budget,” she says.

Following a major personal health scare (six years ago Lisa hadheart surgery to implant a defibrillator to correct an irregularheartbeat caused by a virus) she set about regaining her vitality

with her trademark determination. Stressing the importance of physical health and personal

happiness for effective life management and balance, Lisapractices what she preaches. Her personal appearance and zestfor life is testimony to the success of her methods.

Lisa says many people want to make changes in their lives butare confused about where to start. “My passion is to inspire othersto reach sensible weight goals and develop manageable exercisepatterns. This will help reverse the trend of obesity and heartdisease in children and adults.

“People have different needs and wants. It is important to findan enjoyable exercise and a healthy eating pattern. The greatestmotivation comes from success but it’s hard to be motivated allthe time. Motivation comes in phases, it’s a roller coaster. Bad food, late nights, personal problems and stress impact on motivation.

“As an athlete I trained every day, my motivation was to win.Now my motivation is to do as little as possible to stay inreasonable shape. You don’t have to work out every day, but you

NoosaStyleLiving10

“What you eat andwhat you do is thekey to a healthylifestyle. Movemore, don’t smoke, don’t eat junk andavoid excessivealcohol.

NoosaStyleLiving 11

must find ways of exercisingefficiently, and consistently toget results of fitness, strengthand clearing your head. If youdon’t feel like exercising, justgo for a walk. The less youexercise, the better you have toeat.

“Goal setting is essential, without a planned goal thereis no motivation. Set anattainable goal that requireseffort to achieve. There are nomagic gadgets or quick fixproducts; there are a lot ofunscrupulous people waitingto take money for pills, potionsand lotions that will notproduce the desired result.

“What you eat and whatyou do is the key to a healthylifestyle. Move more, don’tsmoke, don’t eat junk andavoid excessive alcohol. Thecurrent takeaway juice craze isnot necessarily helpful; it makes it too easy toconsume too much fructose (that’s another sugar)and not enough fibre. Swap fruit juice for a vegetablejuice, eat four serves of veg and one serve of fruit aday. This is a better option for a healthier body,” shesays.

Practice what you preach is Lisa’s mantra. Sheshows how women of a certain age can look great,

feel well and retain their vitality. If having it all is anambition, Lisa has the time, energy and motivation tohelp anyone achieve it.

Big Pineapple Music Festival 2014

After bursting onto the highly competitive music festival scene in 2013 by selling outit’s thirteen thousand capacity, the Big Pineapple Music Festival is back - witharguably an even stronger lineup and even more goodies in store for festival goersin 2014. On top of the 33 acts and 3 separate stages, there will be a muscle carexhibition, skate and wakeboard exhibition, and a huge array of scrumptious foodavailable. Musically there’s something for all tastes, with the main stage playing host

to legendary bands such as The Living End, Bliss n Eso and Spiderbait, whilst there is also a Blues andRoots stage, as well as a Dance/Electronic stage .

This year radio station Triple J has jumped on-board with the festival and is presenting the event toa national audience, which helps explain the huge influx of ticket buyers from outside the SunshineCoast.

Whilst the Big Pineapple Music Festival had noted big bar queues last year due to the unexpectedfirst year sell-out, the organizers have taken 2013’s lessons onboard and have tripled the amount of barinfrastructure, as well as bringing in a crack bar management team from Melbourne to make sureeverything flows as quickly and smoothly as possible.

BPMF 2014 promises to be one of the greatest music events the Sunshine Coast has seen - so getout there and grab yourself a ticket before it sells out again.

There is camping for a couple of thousand people and there are also charter buses available fromKey areas on the Sunshine Coast from Noosa to Caloundra. For more information go to www.bigpineapplemusicfestival.com

XFactor mentor DanniiMinogue said Damilooked like shestumbled on stage byaccident but the shy girlin the corner took

centre-stage and went on to aconvincing win. Dami Im capturedthe hearts and attention of fans allaround Australia, her followersclaimed the title of the Dami Army.

Dami and her family moved toAustralia from South Korea whenshe was nine years old. She is now aproud Australian-Korean butmaking a life in a new country andfinding where she fitted in wasn’talways easy. “Sometimes I felt like Ididn’t belong to the Koreancommunity or the Australiancommunity. I think that’s what mademe feel self-conscious and lacking inconfidence,” she says.

Dami showed a talent for classicalmusic from an early age but popmusic was her secret crush. Sheplayed classical piano from the timeshe was five. “I did the highest levelof classical piano exams when I wasin Year 11,” she says. “I was a high-achiever in the classical world but Iwasn’t really in love with classicalmusic.

“I hung around with otherclassical music students in uni, theywere so in love with it and I justwasn’t. I was more into K-pop(Korean pop music) and artists likeMariah Carey, Christina Aguilera andBeyoncé so I struggled to fit in theretoo.”

Travelling back and forth to Koreato pursue her classical career was ashort-term solution but Dami reallywanted a pop career back home inAustralia. “I had a few gigs in smallbars, churches and jazz clubs but Ireally didn’t know how to get mymusic out there and I didn’t have anyconnections,” she says.

“I shied away from things I wasn’tsure about, I was afraid of meetingnew people and putting myself outthere, this of course didn’t help.”With the support of her husbandNoah, Dami plucked up the courageto audition for X Factor. “When Idecided to audition I was at thepoint where I just really wanted tosing in Australia. I was frustratedbecause I didn’t know how to getthat happening.

“My husband encouraged me totry out new ways to get my musicout there. He kept telling me not tobe afraid of going out of my comfortzone. He thought I was being toohesitant so he gave me a gentlepush. I eventually agreed anddecided to give X Factor a shot.”

Dami quickly developed a strongrelationship with her X Factormentor Dannii Minogue. Dami saysDannii helped her embrace thesuper-stylish world of pop. “I thinkDanni saw what I had in me evenbefore I did,” Dami says. “She trustedthat I had something special and itwas up to me to work on myconfidence.

“I really hadn’t heard most of thesongs I performed before Danniiintroduced them to me. When I firstheard One by U2 – the first song inthe live shows – I really didn’tunderstand how the song wouldwork for me but we worked throughit and when I performed theresponse was amazing. All thosestanding ovations were incredible.”

Week after week Dami floored XFactor judges and Australianaudiences receiving standingovations and strong reactions oniTunes charts. “I think my twofavourite performances on the showwere Purple Rain and Bridge OverTroubled Waters.

“They reached number one oniTunes ahead of Katy Perry and MileyCyrus. I really connected with thelyrics and the emotion of the songs.I’ve always wanted to inspire peoplewith my performances and thosesongs really helped me to do that.”

Dami now relives thoseperformances by recording thesongs for her self-titled debut albumDami Im. “When we recorded thesongs we tried to capture the vibewe had in the live performances. Iwant listeners to experience theexcitement of the performances andrelive the moment. The maindifference is the recordings areextended and more polished.During the live performances I wasmoving and singing, in the studio Ican focus all my attention on thevocals.”

The album includes Dami’s recentnumber one ARIA single Alive(produced by hit makers DNA).Dami says she loves the song. “It’s agreat way to start my career. I lovethe positive message of the single, tokeep on dreaming and just go for it.The style of the song is very relevant.I think I really need that for peopleto take me seriously as a pop artist.

The Sony Music Australia releaseof the album sees Dami rise to popstardom. Her national tour isattracting a huge response fromaround the country. Dami saysthere’s more potential to influenceother young people now. “Thiscreates a platform for me toencourage them to follow theirdreams.

“So many people from so manydifferent backgrounds have come tome and said they love me. When Isee their faces it really feels likethey’re looking at me with hope.Sometimes people from othercultures have a hard time fitting intoa new country. If they see someonelike me in the spotlight it showsthem that dreams can come true ifwe work hard enough.

“I’m so proud to be where I amright now; I just want to keep gettingbetter. I’m hoping the album and thetour will create an even moreemotional connection with fansthrough some softer moments. I willwork really hard to become a popartist with diversity and longevity,”Dami says.

boundaries - thinking differently. It was an overcast morning in

Aspen with beautiful soft light. The colours of the Aspen leaves

were vibrant and the carpet of yellow grass on the forest floor

provided great contrast. Instead of a conventional sharp image, I

took a series of “blurred” exposures, moving the camera in a

International acclaim is yet again awardedto our very own Visuddhacara Philip Ayres.

2014 may have just begun but the Design, Advertising and Photographicworld is buzzing with announcements of this years’ New York GraphisAwards. Since 1944 they have identified and published the world’s most

significant and influential works from the world’s greatest talent and Noosa’sLandscape Photographer, Philip Ayres, won Gold for his powerful image ‘Survivor’,prints of which are available through Nissarana Galleries, Noosa.

When asked to choose highlights of his first year on Hastings Street, Phil drew adeep breath and enthusiastically cited receiving no less than 14 EpsonInternational Awards, adding to his existing AIPP award for his entrancing image‘Mountain Light’, being chosen for the Blake Prize Directors Cut Exhibition and theInternational Masters of Photography Annual, opening his second Gallery, Spa &Beauty Centre in Mornington Peninsula, Victoria and securing a diverse ‘stable’ ofleading artists for Nissarana Galleries, Noosa. These include local artists ColinPassmore, with his wonderful depictions of Noosa’s trees, beaches and waters,Dean Riley, the acclaimed Archibald & Doug Moran Portrait Prize finalist and latestmembers, Government commissioned stainless steel sculptor, Chris Calcutt, witheverlasting creations made from 316 marine grade steel which often take over 200hours to complete, as well as internationally exhibited, Julia Carter, who created‘Little Bit of Magic’ specifically for Nissarana Galleries.

And with her works held in both private and corporate collections worldwide, they are delighted to feature the talents of Noosa’s Julia Carter, to quote ‘sheexudes optimism and ‘joie de vivre’ in breathtaking artworks, exploring the powerof synchronicity and individual purpose by connecting nature with her ownexperiences, creating landscapes of the soul’.

So what else is in store for 2014? Why not come in and see for yourself…

Gallery Insand Outs …As with manysuccessful galleries,Jive Art often finds itselfapproached by artistswho think their work “isa perfect fit for thegallery”. Experienceshows that is not alwaysthe case, so the role ofGallery director, JanSinclair is one ofdetermining whichartists to support andwhich to encourage tofind other outlets.

Jan says that there is noabsolute formula for success, but being true to a vision isfor her a primary guidingprinciple. “Defining thegenres or styles of work you

are going to present is the first step indetermining which artists you aregoing to support. Artists may notagree with you, but it is your role tomake that call. Occasional forays intoother styles are fine, but if in spite ofyour best efforts, the work doesn’tconnect with your clients - you have tohave the courage to disappoint anartist and move on”.

Jan notes that it is impossible toknow for sure which clients willconnect with which artwork, but youdo learn over time to make reasonable‘guestimates’. She says it is not areflection on any genre of art or thetalent of any artist but a reflection of

the Gallery’s style in the eyes of itsclients. Most gallery directors use acombination of factors: a passion for aparticular type of work; experiencewith what clients are drawn to; belief inthe work of particular artists who workwithin the gallery’s chosen genre, andof course the polish and integrity of theart itself.

Jan’s artists speak highly of asupportive gallery who stands behindboth the artist and their work.Renowned abstract artist, MichaelWhitehead, has been with the galleryfor almost 10 years and in that time hasseen his career soar. Michael says that:“I show most of my work to Jan, eventhose paintings destined for othergalleries. Her ability to listen andconnect with her clients and then toshare those insights with Jive’s artists isoften the spark needed. Toiling away

in our studios, while rewarding, sometimes has us existing in a bubble, and while we don’t want peopleguiding our brushes – being to talkfreely about directions and bouncingideas off a knowledgeable non artist isinvaluable”.

A personal passion forcontemporary abstract work and thework of Australia’s indigenous peoplehas seen Jive Art come through thestorm of a sluggish industry during theGFC focussed and strong. Jive Artcontinues its work of connectingpeople with the work of its talentedartists.

Lik’s journey had humble origins.Born in Melbourne, Australia to Czechoslovakianimmigrants, it was his parents’ gift of a Kodak Brownie

camera on his eighth birthday that set young Peter’s course.

Entirely self-taught, Lik worked hard at his craft before making a

life-changing decision: to go to the United States in 1984.A chance meeting with fellow photographer Allen Prier in Alaskabecame a defining moment in Peter Lik’s life. He was introduced tothe medium format panoramic camera and given the advice “Gobig or go home.”

Lik did both. He returned to Australia to photograph the vastnessof the Great South Land. Peter then went on to open his own fineart publishing company as well as his first gallery in his adoptedhometown of Cairns. He returned to the States in 1989 for anotherjaunt before undertaking a mammoth trip early in the newmillennium to photograph landscapes of all 50 states. Fiftythousand miles and 1,000 rolls of film later, the “biggest challengeof my life” was completed. Highlights of Peter’s American odysseycan be found in his book “Spirit of America.”

Lik’s stature as a photographer has been indisputablyconfirmed with his receipt of the award of MasterPhotographer from both the Australian Institute of ProfessionalPhotography (AIPP) and the Professional Photographers ofAmerica (PPA). He has also been awarded fellowships by theBritish Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) and TheRoyal Photographic Society (RPS).

Now based in Las Vegas, where he oversees his company LIKUSATM, Lik’s career continues to boom. He has sold in excessof $300 million of fine art photography, has 16 galleries of hisown and counts presidents and celebrities among his manycollectors.

Early 2011 saw three more landmarks for Lik when he sold his

photograph “One,” taken on the banks of the AndroscogginRiver in New Hampshire, for $1 million and had his classicimages “Ghost” and “Inner Peace” included in an exhibition ofNature’s Best Photography in the Smithsonian NationalMuseum of Natural History in Washington D.C.

Lik’s masterworks include “Ancient Spirit,” “Sacred Sunrise,”“Angel’s Heart,” “Tree of Life” and the highly acclaimed“Ghost.” Each Limited Edition release is greeted with greatenthusiasm by collectors and this has been reflected in recentrecordbreaking sales.

Now at the top of his game, Peter Lik is “loving it!” at fullthrottle and the animated Aussie is showing no signs ofslowing down.

Best known in Australia for her roles inHarry Potter and the movie Babe,Miriam said her mother’s stroke hadbeen devastating blow that tore herf a m i l yapart.“It was

1968 and I was in my 30s.Suddenly andcatastrophically the strokehappened and Mummywas walking around thehouse babbling andstaring, and clearlysomething was terriblywrong,” she said.“I realisedthen that nothing wasever going to be the sameagain. And it never was.”

Miriam said the strokecruelly robbed her of themother she knew; yearsbefore her stroke finallyclaimed her mother’s life.

”From being thisvibrant, alert, shrewdfunny lady, there came aspeechless lump,” she said.

“It was the mostterrible, shockingtransformation you canimagine. She had anotherstroke (six months) later and that finished her off,and for the next seven and a half years, we lookedafter her at home. It was just devastating. And suchwas our pain that ever after, we couldn’t speakabout my mother without weeping.”

For Alice, life with her grandmother serves as aconstant reminder of the abject cruelty of stroke.

“A stroke is a ripple. It doesn’t just affect theperson that has the stroke, it affects everyonearound them,” she said.

“It’s really, really difficult to watch someone thatwas very capable be less capable and not realise itas well.”

Around 50,000 strokes happen in Australia eachyear – that’s about one every ten minutes. TheNational Stroke Foundation’s Fight Strokecampaign aims to put stroke on the agenda for allAustralians.

National Stroke Foundation CEO Dr Erin Lalorsaid stroke was brutal and indiscriminate.

“Stroke can happen to anyone at any age and iscapable of causing the same kind of brain injury asa serious car crash – and needs the same urgent

medical treatment,” she said.“One in six people will have a stroke in their

lifetime but most Australians still don’t reallyunderstand what a stroke is or what to do about it.

“Our Fight Stroke campaign aims to raiseawareness of stroke but equally importantly, itspurpose is to influence government to ensure thisterrible condition received the funding sodesperately needed. Stroke was made a nationalhealth priority almost two decades ago, yet it hasnever received Federal budget funding.”

Stroke is a blood clot or bleed on the brain thatstarves brain cells of oxygen and causes parts of thebrain to die. Prompt medical attention is requiredto restore blood flow as soon as possible, andprevent sections of the brain from dying andcausing disabilities.

Dr Lalor says one-third of stroke patients will dieand one-third will be left with a significant disability, making it impossible for them to liveindependently.

Members of the public can help the fightagainst this terrible condition by joining theFight Stroke campaign atwww.strokefoundation.com.au.

Massage therapist

Robin Braidwood

has a new assistant

but his job

description is a

little different to

most. This key staff

member is a guide

dog named Siggy

whose duties

include making

sure Robin can

travel through his

daily routine.

Robin Braidwood lost his sight about 10 yearsago as the result of a genetic disorder. He wasthen in his mid-thirties and working as a highlyskilled mechanical engineer. Robin says the lossof his sight was a major blow and required agreat deal of adjustment.

“I couldn’t continue in my engineering career so I retrainedas a massage therapist,” he says. “My first guide dog Nargeehelped me adjust to my new way of life and Siggy has nowtaken over his job. Nargee, a beautiful black Labrador, is nineyears old and has now retired but he will continue to livewith us as a pet, he is part of the family. “Siggy came to us on Valentine’s Day. He’s a yellow LabradorRetriever, Golden Retriever cross. He’s is a qualified guide dogbut he is still a puppy and will require quite a bit of trainingbut he already understands my commands,” Robin says.Robin’s regular routine includes bus travel and walks toPeregian Village. “Siggy has to learn his way to the Surf Club, the post office, the vet and the baker. We may not take theshortest route, it is important to take the safest option.“An instructor from Queensland Guide Dogs helps with thetraining in the early stages. Siggy has to learn when to stayat the kerb. I make the decision about when it safe to crossby listening to the traffic signals and sounds. Siggy respondsto the go forward command and he knows left from right.

“If I say go forward, go forward heknows this means to go quickly andsafely along. He will stop me frombumping in to trees or lamp posts; heknows how to find the kerb. Therelationship between me and mydog is one of trust but initial trainingis based on reward. “Siggy already knows when it’s playtime and when it’s time for work.Once his harness is on he makes thetransition. He is rewarded by beingtold he is a good dog. I know it willtake six months to a year before wedevelop the bond I have with Nargeebut it will happen.“When Siggy arrived we had toestablish who is in charge. I must bethe alpha male, Siggy is second incommand and Nargee is graduallyrelinquishing his duties. It isimportant to make changes graduallyso Nargee knows he is loved andSiggy feels welcome,” Robin says.Robin says guide dogs are very welltrained but they still have theirnatural animal instincts. “When we areout walking people see me with mywhite cane and the dog in harness. Most people love dogs and it is quitecommon for people to come up to usfor a chat. Unfortunately that cancause problems.“No matter how well trained a guidedog is he or she will always bedistracted by other dogs. When aguide dog is distracted he can’t do hisjob. It is very disconcerting whendogs are wandering the streetswithout a lead and when peoplebring their dogs over to meet Siggy. We know these people mean wellbut it doesn’t work for me or my dog.It is better if they keep their distanceand all dogs should be kept on alead,” he says Guide Dogs Queenslandspokesperson Matthew Barwick saysbreeding and training guide dogs isvery expensive. “It costs $30,000 tobreed, train and place each guidedog,” he says. “There are currently 24

Queenslanders waiting to receive one of these life-changingguides. “Guide Dogs Queensland relies on the generosity ofQueensland communities and business people to provide93 per cent of the funding we need to deliver our serviceseach year. We receive less than seven per cent ingovernment funding. “The funding we do receive is limited to some specificorientation and mobility programs in Brisbane and on theGold Coast. There is no funding for guide dog services or forany services in rural or regional Queensland. All our services, including our iconic guide dogs, are provided toQueenslanders in need free of charge,” Matthew says.Every year Guide Dogs Queensland delivers more than 1000specialised programs to around 2000 Queenslanders withlow or no vision and provides support to thousands more.Services include orientation and mobility training, guide dogservices, support groups, counselling, low vision clinics, specialised student programs and training in electronic travelaids.

However, help is at hand asNioxin the expert in haircare for thinning hair, introduces its new productline-up to provideAustralians with a provensolution to thinning hair.

Based on over 23 years of expertise, 12years of award wins, and Nioxin’s unique skin care approach to hair care - one

that treats the scalp skin as well as the hair. It consists of six three-part systemsand additional specific treatments that can be combined for a truly customisedsolution.

When trialled, the three-part systems have been proven to successfully combatthinning hair, with 70% of users noticing their hair looked thicker and denser afterjust two weeks of daily use. Clinical testing also shows that the additional NioxinDensity Restoration Treatment is so effective that it helps reduce hair fall frombreakage and environmental factors by an average of 54%.

Researchers investigated the biological factors that influence hair thinning, revealing three factors that can impact the hair’s appearance and condition:

• there is a clear link between a healthy scalp and healthy hair• hair and scalp needs vary throughout hair growth cycles• the hair changes in structure over time due to influences such as ageingFor Nioxin, thinning hair equals hair that has less volume and fullness. • fewer hair strands from hair fall and breakage• finer hair strands due to the hair’s structure changing over time• a poor scalp environment due to product and sebum build-up

Finding the right solution to your hair thinning needs is as easy as answeringthree short questions; firstly the degree of hair thinning; secondly, whether it isfine or medium/coarse; and finally, whether it is natural or colour treated. Eachsystem contains custom technologies and ingredients that are specificallytailored to the individual needs of your hair and scalp to create thicker, fuller hair.NIOXIN available at Bounce Hair & Image, Noosaville

At the recent Golden Globe Awardssoft and gently curled locks vied forattention against loose braids - with

romantic styles making their mark onthe red carpet. Here are two classicstyles to create for your next night

out designed by celebrity stylist DarioCotroneo of DARIO salon in Sydney.

Sarah Hyland rocks a retro hairstyle that requires no tools Inspired byValentino's runway show, Sarah's crown braid gives a youthful look to herclassic style.

Step 1: Part damp hair in the middle and spray Sachjuan Root lift spray aroundthe crown area. Blow-dry hair smooth, but with lots of volume.Step 2: Once hair is dry, spray with Sachajuan medium hairspray. Brush hair backfrom in from the front of the crown area while maintaining the middle part to giveit a little 60’s look. Then brush all hair into a low ponytail and secure with a elasticband. Divide the ponytail into 2 sections.

Take the first section of hair, twist, roll it under, and secure with bobbie pins tocreate a small bun.

Braid the second section of hair and secure the ends with an elastic band.Step 3: Wrap the braided section of hair towards the front of your head, in-between the forehead and crown. Secure with bobbie pins.

The tip is not to open the bobbie pin - only push it into the braided hair theninto the hair beneath the braid to secure, as this will hide the bobbie pin.

Continue to wrap the braid around to the head to meet the ponytail, then wrapthe remaining hair around the bun. Loosen hair around the edges to make it fun,and using a make up brush and Sachajuan medium hairspray, secure your style.

Olivia Wilde looks fabulous in a relaxed glam style that requires Mycurlcurling / styling tool.

Step 1: Part hair from front hairline to nape and tie a ribbon around the widestarea of your head (from recession area around the crown).

Divide hair into 4 even sections from below the ribbon, and spray Straight andShine Spray by Sachajuan on the left side section, using the width of a Large sizeMycurl as a guide for your section width. Wrap hair vertically around a Mycurl fromthe mid lengths, directing hair away from the face. When the ends are secure undermid lengths, secure the first strap and continue rolling Mycurl up to the cheekbonearea and secure the second strap. Repeat this on the right side.Step 2: Repeat Step 1 on the back two sections of hair, rolling hair away from theface.Step 3: Clamp your straightening irons over each Mycurl for 10 sections, andallow hair to cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Spray Medium hairspray by Sachajuan ontoa makeup brush and glide through the top area to clean up any loose hairs.

Result: After hair has cooled down, remove the ribbon and all Mycurls and shakeout the root area to open up the curl. Spray gloss on the ends followed by SuperStrong hairspray by Sachajuan and sweep to one side to complete the style.

It is clear that Hutchence’s universal sex appeal, flamboyant lifestyle, string of high profile partners, and ultimately his sudden death, is stillas alluring as ever. His talent as a performer combined with his

bonafide rock-star look, still have his fans all around the worldmesmerised.

Part of this look was his Paul Taylor glasses that he purchasedpersonally from Paul Taylor’s shop in Sydney's eastern suburbs with hispartner Paula Yates.

The frame was to become part of Hutchence’s signature look - andmost famously, he was captured in Harry Bordens portrait on theChamps Elysees in Paris. The portrait now hangs in the Picture Galleryin Canberra, and remains one of the most iconic photos of the legendaryartist.

Paul Taylor only saw that Hutchence had picked up one ofhis frames in photos later on. He has since namedan updated version of the frame afterhim - as a tribute to one of hisfavourite artists. The "Michael" and"Hutchence" frames remain in Taylor'sTimeless Collection, due to theirenduring appeal.

Opal is Australia’s nationalgemstone with a pedigree as old astime. About 95 per cent of theseprecious gemstones are found here,no wonder Australia is knowninternationally as the lucky country.

There are only six types of preciousgemstones found on earth, theseinclude opals, diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls.Precious opals are rare, thesesuperstar stones make up about

0.25 per cent of all opals mined. Every opal isunique, the bright rainbow of colours(known as the play of colour)changes dramatically from everyangle.

Opals Down Underassistant manage RhysFox says it is easy tosee why people loveopals. “The colours, the texture and theallure of opals dateback through theages,” he says. “Opalswere formed millions ofyears ago; they have beenused to create jewellery sinceman was first captivated by thecolours captured in the stones.

“The Romans established opal as a preciousgemstone, their source was Middle Easterntraders but it seems the opals were mined inEastern Europe. Opals were known as the CupidStone because they reflected the clearcomplexion of the god of love.

“Ancient Greeks believed opals bestowedpowers of prophecy. Arabian folklore says thestone fell from heaven in flashes of lightningwhile Oriental traditions show opals as theanchor of hope. Lucky Librans claim opal astheir birthstone but its exquisite beauty isavailable to everyone,” Rhys says.

While the opal has been credited withmagical properties Rhys says the real magic is inthe unique play of colour in each stone. “Adiamond must be magnified to reveal its truebeauty but opal shows a spectrum of light tothe naked eye. The mystique is enhanced withimaginative jewellery settings,” he says.

“People love to own an exceptionalpiece of jewellery. Heirlooms, special

occasion jewellery such asengagement rings and

commemorative pieces take onnew meaning when the

stone was formed millions ofyears ago. An opal is aprecious piece of Australia; itcan be worn, admired andgifted to future generations.”

The Noosa River forms the natural arterythrough the heartland of the region andprovides a haven for safe swimming and water-based activities. Shady banks provide perfectpicnic spots or departure points for leisurelycruises through myriad tributaries, wetlands

Closer to Noosa the Noosa Marina is a destination youshouldn’t miss. As the sun rises, it not unusual to see kidssitting on the end of the wharf wishing for more than atiddler on the line, watching charter boats head to the outerreef for a serious day’s fishing and hoping one day they’llbe old enough to be on board.

Adjacent to the 40-berth Marina, skateboarders ramp itup before school in Spray Park, the Noosa Ferry prepares toleave for all-day and evening services to Noosa Heads withdrop-offs and pick-ups along the way, while aromas ofcoffee, bacon and toast pervade the salty air. Hiring a kayak or jet ski, charter a barbecue pontoon, putt-putt, fishing tinnie orstand-up paddle board.

Noosa attracts people from all over Australia and around the world.Recently settled residents Lisa Widmer, Mollie Bingham and SaraKumpf are now actively promoting the location internationally.

NoosaStyleLiving 49

Lisa Widmer was born and raised in Canada but decided tofollow the sun to Australia after completing a universitydegree in human resources. She says the cold Canadianwinters meant spending too much time indoors. “I love thebeach and riding around on a cruise bike, I expectedAustralia to suit my lifestyle perfectly and it does,” she says.

Armed with a working holiday visa Lisa landed in Sydney and moved inwith friends in Bondi. She explored the Sydney scene and then decided to seemore of the lucky country.

Lisa says she bought a car and drove up the coast to Noosa. “I stopped at alot of places in between but didn’t really do the whole backpacker thing,” shesays. “I have visited Melbourne and Cairns but the Sunshine Coast stole myheart.

“I contacted friends Mollie and Sara in Canada. We have been friends sinceour school days in Kelowna, a city in the southern interior of British Columbia.I told them how great it was here and they decided to join me.

“I began the search for a home we could share and the producers of theinternational television show House Hunters approached me about filmingthe search. We found a home in Alexandra Headlands with the help DanSowden of Ray White Maroochydore and House Hunters,” she says.

Now Lisa, Mollie and Sara are comfortably settled and living the SunshineCoast lifestyle. Lisa is practice manager at ABC Dental Buderim, Mollie isstudying nursing at the university and works at Sunshine Coast PrivateHospital. Sara is studying business at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Lisa says sharing the rented house with friends is great. “It's lots of fun alwayshaving your friends around. I have shared houses in the past where you endup hating your house mates because you are in such close quarters.

“Living here is really good. I still feel like I am on vacation with my two bestfriends. Life is good. The only downside is our house has paper thin walls. I cansit in my room with the door closed and have a full conversation withsomeone sitting in the lounge room.”

The girls agree Canada and Australia are similar in many ways but the hotweather took a while to get used to. Lisa says the average winter temperaturein Kelowna is minus-seven degrees. “The heat came as a bit of shock but wecan always cool off at the beach. We find it amazing that people wear thickscarfs when the temperature is still in above zero.

“We now have heaps of friends and we all have Australian boyfriends. Wecan now understand the slang; it was a bit of a problem at first. Driving on thewrong side of the road was another thing that took a bit of getting used to.

“We love the laid back attitude and the easy going lifestyle. We did findthings more expensive than expected but overall we are living the dream. Weall miss our friends and family in Canada. I miss the scenery and the seasons.

“I love the ocean and weather here but Canada has beautiful landscapes. Igrew up living on a lake where you spend most of your time boating andenjoying the very short summer season. I miss having snow at Christmas timeand I miss hockey, Canada won gold in men's hockey at the Olympics this yearand everyone at home got up at 4am to watch the game. They even changedthe liquor licensing so bars could serve alcohol at 4am,” she says.

“Canadian licensing laws are quite strict, you can’t take your own alcoholto restaurants, BYO is one of the things we love about Australia, it’s weird butawesome. We love dining out, Fish on Parkyn in Mooloolaba is a favouritebecause you can dine outside and it’s right across from the ocean. The seafoodis always fresh.

“Rococo is another favourite, the piano bar makes for a nice atmosphere. The Birds and the Beans Espresso Bar in Buderim makes the best coffee onthe coast. All the staff there are so friendly and genuinely nice people as well.

“We love all the fresh produce like mangos and avocados. The coffee hereis perfect. I am not a big fan of vegemite and I don't think I will ever get usedto tearing the heads off prawns and eating them. But I absolutely love seafoodand I have had some of the best here on the coast,” Lisa says.

The girls all agree they have found their place in the sun.

bright andbeautiful...

With its lively mix of boutiques, al fresco cafes, casual surfculture and village vibe, Sunshine Beach has something tooffer everyone.

Add ‘vibrant café society’ to Sunshine Lollipops andRainbows everything…the title of Lesley Gore’s classicsong and you could be excused for thinking she’s

referring to Sunshine Beach.Once known as Golden Beach, Sunshine Beach is a popular

choice for visitors who choose to stay in apartments with slide-away doors to let in the salty summer breezes or spread out andluxuriate in multi-million dollar mansions with beach access.

Waking up to the sounds of rolling surf is a treat; so is breakfastat the Surf Club but get up at sparrows if you want a tabledirectly overlooking the sand so budding ironmen and nipperscan watch the action. The wide, open coastline hosts a variety ofbanks for an endless, uncrowded surfing session and the sectionin front of the Surf Club is patrolled year round.

The beach acts as a runway to nature walks and trails throughthe National Park, all the way to Noosa via breathtaking views, adip at Little Cove and a surf break at the unspoilt Alexandria Bay.

If coffee is something you can’t do without, experience a

barista-made espresso – the organic coffee beans are roastedon site – and spend an idle hour under a broad umbrella with amagazine or property guide.

A breakfast alternative is to find a spot on a sun-drenchedwide deck or in the shade on the pavement which spills out froman al fresco café - perfect spots too for brunch or late lunch.Maybe also a late afternoon cocktail, beer or other refreshers asyou watch the world go by from one of the bars.

Book at one of the many restaurants or cafes whereimaginative seasonal fare is served; order takeaway such as fishand chips, pizza and home-made pies; and call in to the bakery, deli or general store for fresh local produce and pantry supplies, snacks, ice creams, cakes and sweets; and how about a picnicpack to take to the park or the beach foreshore.

The retail mix and specialised services on offer arecosmopolitan yet varied from savvy boutiques, surf shop, hairdresser, pamper specialists and homewares to architects, artgalleries and property management companies that look afterholiday accommodation.

Whatever you’re after, you won’t be disappointed. The laidbackcafe society of Sunshine Beach is always ready to please. And younever know who you’ll bump into!

“Think you knowMexican food, think

again. This series willchange any preconceivedideas you may have had.

Come on the journey andlearn with me, as I unveil

a whole new way ofcreating tacos, tamales,

mole and much more.” –

Peter Kuruvita

On a beautiful Autumnafternoon recently, we caughtup with Peter Kuruvita at hispopular, Noosa Beach Houserestaurant in Hastings Street,Noosa Heads, to talk about hisfabulous new Mexican Fiestacooking/ travel escapade onSBS One, and to try one of themany dishes he has beentempting us with on the show.

Peter was full of enthusiasm for the foodof Mexico, and the adventures heexperienced whilst sourcing traditionalrecipes in their indigenous home. Peterlives by a 'chef vs wild' philosophy - andlikes to push the envelope a bit with his

cooking adventures. He explained that Mexico was aland of contrasts where - "you need to scratch thesurface, and forget your preconceived ideas andprejudices, to enjoy the journey and really get toknow the people."

In his new 10 part series you feel part of theadventure, as Peter travels through Mexico in searchof one of the world’s most exciting cuisines. Peter saidthat this was his biggest adventure yet, and he wasexhilarated as he dived headfirst into the larger thanlife culture and cuisine of Mexico. With limitedunderstanding of what it takes to create the perfectMexican meal, and no Spanish language skills to aidhis travels, Peter opened his mind and heart, as localsacross the country invited him into their homes and

kitchens, introducing him to the fun, vibrancy and unique flavours that all combineto create the most delicious Mexican food.

Guided by some of Mexico’s most intriguing and colourful local characters, passionate farmers and indigenous tribes, he travelled south from the US border byall modes of transport - truck, train, boat and even a rickety old car. From the desertsof the north to the jungles of the south, Mexico’s forever-changing landscapeprovided a dramatic backdrop.

In a world bursting with the celebration of life and food, Peter found inspirationin the rich traditions and native ingredients of this diverse and ancient land.

One of my favourite moments on a recent show was when Peter was introducedto the 'King' of Tequila, and shared a huge glass of his signature drink - half a glass ofTequila topped with Coco Cola!

Mexico has given the world some of our most loved and staple cookingingredients; tomatoes, chilies, avocados, vanilla, chocolate and corn; but Peter foundthat in Mexico, the locals use them in ways we have never even thought of. Fromtacos to tamales, salsas to sizzling pork, Peter discovered the traditional recipes ofthe regions before setting about creating his own versions.

With a cook book to follow later this year, we will soon be able to add fabulousnew Mexican dishes and cooking skills to our resumé.

If you aren't up for a trip to Mexico, you'll be pleased to know that Peter ispreparing two dishes each week from the show to be included on his menu at theNoosa Beach House. The bar will also be creating a special Tequila cocktail each weekto add to the Mexican dining experience.

We tried the richly flavoursome Birria: a Mexican dish from Peter's new show, consisting of tender, slow-roasted goat gently simmered in exotic spices, andpresented with warm tortillas and chilli salsa. Washed down with the very excitingSunset in Jalisco cocktail. Yum.

The next generation of Australia’sFirst Families of Wine:

Making their mark for the future...With 2014 well under way, Australia’s First Families ofWine (AFFW) has wasted no time getting into the swingof things. The onset of an early vintage in many regionshas not slowed the AFFW’s commitment to the premiumAustralian wine message, with many of the nextgeneration family members now spearheading thecampaign.

The next generation of AFFW (colloquiallyknown as the Next Genners) are increasinglybeing identified as faces to watch in the wineindustry. In 2013 we saw Tom Barry from JimBarry Wines named Gourmet Traveller WINE‘Young Winemaker of the Year’ and he,

alongside Johann Henschke of Henschke, have beenfeatured in the UK Drinks Business list of ‘Top 30 under 40’to watch. This definitive list was published in January thisyear.

Those not involved with production are making theirmark in the consumer wine markets. The Brown BrothersNext Genners (sisters Katherine, Caroline and Emma) havechampioned a number of prominent and clever consumerwine campaigns, and thanks to their #proseccotime andSummer of Prosecco initiatives, these passionate sistershave become a key driving force behind the risingpopularity of Prosecco in Australia.

Mitchell Taylor, Chairman of Australia’s First Families ofWine said, “Our next generation are a vibrant young groupwho are in touch with new and emerging trends, and theywork with us to ensure that we stay fresh and on point inthe modern marketplace. We have a lot of faith in our nextgeneration and their ability to carry on our family legaciesand become future leaders and innovators in theproduction of Australian wine.”

The Next Genners represent a wide cross-section ofpersonalities, ages, career paths and experience, but each isunified by their heritage, passion for wine and family. Each

family sees their Next Gennerscontributing to the family businessin different ways. Think BrandManagers (Richard Burch andKatherine Brown); PR andMarketing (Justine Henschke,Caroline Brown, JaneCampbell); IT andEnvironment (HayleyPurbrick); CommercialManagement (Sam Barry)and of course winemaking(Tom Barry, Scott McWilliam,Johann Henschke). Those whoare not involved full time are ofteninvolved as brand ambassadors, returning to help out over the busysummer months in the restaurants and at cellardoors and as extra hands at vintage time.

Over the course of 2014 AFFW will see its Next Gennerscontinuing to play a critical role in taking the premiumAustralian wine message to the wider consumer marketthrough events, tastings, and the planned Next Gen tour toNSW. Rallying together under the AFFW banner, they aimis to educate and inform the wine drinkers and winecurious, about the wide variety of excellent Australian winesavailable, the stories, history and characters behind thesehousehold names, and the importance of preserving thesefamily owned and operated wine businesses.

Their broad array of achievements, both publicly anddaily on the job, show the passion the AFFW Next Gennershave for their families, wines and heritage. 2014 will be achance for them to continue their contribution and helpensure the AFFW message reaches new heights. The AFFWNext Genners carry the keys to future proofing their familybusiness. In their capable hands the future looks bright.

I find it absolutelyoverwhelming and thrilling to see how 20thCentury architects have looked to the future whilestill referencing the past with intense decoration,

Succulents They're perfectly suited to life on the coast - and whoisn't! Their fleshy leaves, glaucous foliage and abilityto grow in poor soils are adaptations suited to strong

winds and salt. Succulents are available in so many differentforms and habits, in striking colours and architecturalshapes - they come as trees, ground covers and shrubs, andare notable for their beautiful flowers, which ten to bloomwhen other plants in the garden are not flowering.Aeonium arboreum Houseleek

Recognisable by its flat rosette foliage. Ranges from a flathabit to a branching from up to 80 centimetres tall. Survivesin front-line salt conditions and poor rocky soil. Cultivarsinclude 'Atropurpureum', a reddish purple variety, and'Zwartkop', and almost black form.Agave americana Century Plant

It deserves respect, thanks to a serious array of thorns, and plenty of room, as a single specimen can be up to 2metres wide. Looking brilliant as a single specimen or in aclump, americana is grown for its foliage as, although the 4metre tall flower is spectacular,it signifies the death of theplant. Most are blue but there are several cultivars, including'Variegata', which has a green centre and yellowish margin, and 'Mediopicta', with a white centre and green margin.Extremely hardy, americana requires full sun and free-draining soil.Agave attenuata Lion's Tail

Probably the most common of all succulents grown, itforms a green rosette up to 1 metre wide and, although itlooks best on the ground, will become arboreal given lowerlight and lack of space. I prefer to grow them in a clumprather than individual specimens as the foliage colour is toosoft to be noticed when not en masse.Agave victoriae-reginae Queen Victoria Agave

My favourite agave, it looks as if it has been painted byan artist to highlight the leaf borders with fine white lines. The most highly prized plant of the mid-1800s, it wasnamed after Queen Victoria. Very hardy, you will want tofeature it in an elevated space as it only grows 50centimetres tall and dan get swamped by larger material.Suitable for sunny, slaty free-draining locations.Aloe barberae Tree Aloe

I once maintained a property with a specimen of barber,10 metres tall and 5 metres wide. Sadly, most are removedbefore they get this big as it appears to have become thepot plant of the moment. It is extremely salt and windtolerant, making this species one of the largest trees youcan use in the toughest of locations. Flowers are rose pinkand foliage is olive green.

The celebration of ‘pure’ colour extends the collection of two handbagmodels – the Continental and the Barnato bags – with references toBentley’s signature bespoke hide combinations.

Concepts of refined luxury inspire a Special Ivory derived from Bentley’s1952 Continental R-Type executed for the Continental handbag modelin patent leather with a deep Burgundy interior. The Barnato handbag is

now offered in an Imperial Blue exterior with Linen panels, a Linen interioraccented with Imperial Blue pockets, representing the ultimate

expression of luxury and refinement in harmony withsea and coastal landscapes, yachting and other leisure

pursuits.Classical historic colours include Dragon Red

drawn from the Continental GT V8, alsoexecuted in patent leather; and CumbrianGreen, which glances back to the renownedBentley Blower model executed in combinedpatent and smooth leather, thus replicatingthe traditional 1930’s design where the carbody was part paint, part trimmed in leather.

Further intense colour specifications havebeen created through the significantexpression of combinations evident in

Bentley’s model palette. These bespokepairings reflect a variety of global definitions of

luxury taste, matching regional social andcultural values. The colour combinations can also

be perceived as ‘passe-partouts’, or central blocksof colour which are bordered by contrast tones, as

a picture in a frame. Such combinations include: Saffron/Linen, ImperialBlue/Linen, Portland/Pillar Box Red, Saddle/Linen.

Relevant to Bentley’s extensive currentcar colours are combinations which expressa thematic contemporary fashionstatement: Autumn/light blue (seasonal),Burgundy/Linen (classic), St James’Red/Aquamarine (avant garde).

Dr Ariane Reinhart, member of the boardof Bentley Motors, comments: “The coloursare strong and exciting. We want to bringaccents of daring colour into a woman’swardrobe.

“The shades emphasise an aspect of the true Bentley personality, which anew generation of female customers can enjoy in their daily lives. The newhandbag colours are complemented by the new silk scarves and bring therefined luxury and bespoke elements of a Bentley to a wider female audience.”

The silk scarves depict architectural and natural landscape features in anabstract pattern. Within the scarf images are featured the Jacobean mansion ofCrewe Hall, the historic estate of Tatton Park and the renowned façade ofBentley’s factory.

The pool of colours lifts the traditional silk scarf into a modern interpretationthat is full of life. In the two colour combinations of blue/Magenta andorange/Magenta can be found a compass, a composition of Bentley’s wingslogo, a map of the world and a dial from a Bentley dashboard.

Australian travel show pioneers the Leyland Brothers enthralled television audiences everySunday evening for decades. Mike and Mal took armchair travellers all over Australia withadventurous real life experiences that remain unrivalled today.

Sadly, Mike Leyland passed away in 2009 after battling Parkinson’s Disease but Mal is alive andwell and taking up residence in Maleny. Mal and his wife of 44 years Laraine will continue totravel but when they are not on the road they plan to relax on the Sunshine Coast.

Mal says they had always wanted to live in Maleny. “We have lived an almost self sufficient lifestyleon a 25 acre property in Glen Innes for the past 12 years but looking after cows, goats, pigs and fruittrees has become a bit of chore,” he says.

“We opted for a new home in Living Gems Sunstone Gardens Resort at Maleny. It’s maintenancefree and the resort offers a host of five star facilities and an active social life. It gives us the best ofboth worlds, a country village lifestyle with holiday resort amenities.”

Mal is not only a pioneer traveller he is a prolific writer with a string of books to his credit. His latestwork is an autobiography that is due for release by Allen and Unwin in August. It promises to be abig hit with Australian readers as anyone who grew up in this country instantly recognises the Leylandname and recalls the catchy Leyland Brothers’ signature tune.

Readers will discover the Leyland family history is worthy of a major television drama. Mal’s parentsemigrated from England in the early 1950s. Mal was five and his brother Mike was eight. They wereimmediately captivated by their new home in Newcastle but it was the first of many.

Mal says his father was an entrepreneur and quick to see the opportunities in the Lucky Country.“My dad came to Australia to give us a better life. Back then immigrants had to be sponsored by aresident citizen and show they had a secure place to live. We moved in with an English family thathad emigrated several years earlier.

“My dad worked hard to ensure our future. When the officials at Australia House in London were abit slow processing our immigration application my dad wrote to then Prime Minister Menzies askingfor help. He received a reply, the application was processed and we boarded the boat for the longjourney to the other side of the world.

“Dad capitalised on the booming economy and went into real estate. This often involved sellingthe family home so we were always on the move. Mike and I became especially close because theconstant moves made it difficult to keep friends. Our relationship was based on friendship andbrotherly love but we had more than a few spats in our business partnership,” he says.

Mal’s memoirs, the experiences gleaned during a life well lived and his flair for story telling withoutembellishment guarantees a good read. His yet untitled autobiography will be treasured by peopleof all ages who admire a winning spirit and a sense of adventure.

Last

word

It had been years since I was last in Noosa. Then, I was on holidays and also to seefriends who operated Lawfords Store inNoosa Sound.

When I returned last year thesight of people sun baking onNoosa’s beaches confirmedthat I had arrived on theSunshine Coast. Turquoisewaters and golden sands have

sold Noosa forever and it’s refreshing to experiencea marketing message that fulfils the promise.

My mission was to attend the festival at theinvitation of Queensland Tourism and write aboutit for Asian publications. A tough life I know, butsomeone’s got to do it so it wasn’t with too muchhesitation that I accepted the challenge.

Being an Aussie who hasn’t lived in Australia forover two decades theopportunity to return isalways welcomed. Yearsago I took up a positionwith an international NGOin Malaysia and for variousreasons, haven’t returnedpermanently to Australiaalthough I get backregularly.

I was born in Newcastleand weaned on HunterValley wines as a student sowine has been importantin my life since – forresearch purposes, youunderstand, not because Ienjoy it!

This wine knowledgeassisted me in writing about wines in Asia wherethere is no wine industry to speak of and wherewines were little understood when I arrived. This haschanged and many Asians are now knowledgeableand hungry (or thirsty) to learn more and to includewine and food touring while holidaying.

My love of such holidays is useful as I now havethe opportunity to write about what I love to domyself. Now that the pioneer holiday destinationsof Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the reef are on theitineraries of many Asians, it’s my understandingthat places like Noosa are new territory for many, hence my invitation to attend the festival.

Last year’s festival was superb but as there is nosuch thing as a free lunch, my task was to writeabout the festival. I loved the events that I attended, the weather was fantastic and Noosa has a lot tooffer overseas travellers.

Asian InsightsNot that I can speak for Asians, having lived there

provides me with an insight as to what appeals to many.Unfortunately, Noosa’s beautiful beaches have onlypassing appeal to most Asians; they love to see it andphotograph it. Lazing here for hours and frolicking in thewater has minimal appeal.

However, they love food and many are discoveringwine. Wine will only be appeal to a few and spendinghours swilling wine, isn’t always done. However, food iscentral to most Asians that I know. In Malaysia, thecommon greeting is sudah makan (have you eaten?) – ifyou have, you’ll discuss what you’ve eaten and, if youhaven’t; you’ll eat or discuss the possibilities. Delicious foodis cheap, sold almost everywhere and around the clock.Put simply; Malaysians eat because they can.

The lack of hawker food in Australia puts a dampeneron the eating habits of many Asians, but they soon findalternatives. Most need rice regularly and aren’t alwaysopen to eating ‘Australian food’ (whatever that is, butusually perceived to be Western food). Every few daysthere will be withdrawal symptoms and an urgent needto eat Asian food regardless of its quality.

Australia’s quality and availability of seafood isrenowned among Asian travellers. Seafood is perceived asa premium food and they can’t get enough of it. Therefore, many festival events will have huge appeal among Asianvisitors.

To continue a few generalisations, Asians love to shop. For me to understand this is difficult but I’ve thought longand hard about the phenomena. Shopping provides thetrophies of travel and buying things you can’t get backhome puts you in good stead with friends back home. Many people in the travel industry talk about ‘ecotourism’but for Asian travellers, they should be thinking of‘egotourism’ as many travel to impress others. Maybe thisisn’t a trait specifically Asian; one of the reasons peopletravel is to brag about where they went and what theydid. Buying specific items provides an outward sign of this.So most of my Asian friends will get twitchy if they can’tshop and many Australian destinations are perceived asbeing ‘dead’ in the evening because shops are closed.Market shopping is a must-do activity and EumundiMarket and Noosa Farmers’ Market would be hugelypopular.

Most Asians don’t travel to relax. They’ve spent goodmoney getting to expensive destinations like Australia soit’s important to cram in as much as they can in one day. Most want quality accommodation and don’t suggest awalk in the rainforest; they have that back home and don’twalk there, so why should they start in Australia.

Generalisations aside, there are many well to do,urbane, moneyed and well-travelled Asians who will justlove Noosa .

Putting Noosa in the sitesofAsian travellers

Everyone needs a good reason to visit a new destination and

there’s nothing like a food and wine festival to provide the

motivation for me to travel back to Australia. With this in mind,

I headed from Malaysia toQueensland for last year’s Noosa International Food

and Wine Festival.
