DEFINITION Visual note taking is a process of representing ideas non-‐linguistically. (That’s a fancy of way of saying, “drawing pictures.”) Visual note taking can include concept mapping, but also more artistic ways of visually capturing and representing ideas. On the simpler side of the visual note taking continuum, visual notes can be used to create narrated art. On the complex end of the spectrum, some visual note taking applications support the creation of whiteboard animation videos which include audio narration synchronized to screencasts of drawings. Visual or graphic facilitation can be used at meetings to summarize presentations and guide discussions.
Whether simple or complex, visual notes can be used to more deeply process information as well as communicate it to others with images. As retrieved from: http://maps.playingwithmedia.com/visual-‐notetaking/ on 8-‐6-‐14
Three Video Sources worth watching if you’re REALLY interested:
1**Video on http://maps.playingwithmedia.com/visual-‐notetaking/ narrated by Rachel Smith. (about iPad useage) 2**Rachel’s 18 minute TEDx talk, “Drawing in Class,” also provides an excellent overview about the “what and why” of visual notetaking. 3**The CBS Sunday Morning program “The higher purpose of Doodling” (19 Jan) is 7 minutes long and super!

As Rachel Smith says:
◊ Visual Notes are not the best way or the only way….but, another way. ◊ You should be…..listening and capturing, listening and capturing, listening
and capturing….you need to be listening to the speaker… ◊ If you can look at your notes and tell back the story you hear from the
speaker, then you’ve done it right. ◊ Capture what you’re hearing in a way that’s memorable to YOU!
Three Simple Steps 1) Choose a tool (paper, tablet, pens, stylus: comfort is the key, the tool can’t get
in the way, practice before you need it…
2) Build up mental library (most important tool: basic icons, steal, modify to build your own library, practice makes permanent…might modify and add, but not making it up on the spot—you don’t want to make it up as you go, you can’t attend to both creating images and listening….take notes in a language you already know)
3) Practice listening and capturing key points (it works if you capture key points,
images should be simple enough you can draw quickly—you can always add details—a picture can remind you of the details
Tips and Techniques:
• Choose images that are quick and easy • Make the images relevant • Keep up with speaker • Leave a space and move on if necessary (come back later) • Listen for presenters “take away” points

Tips from Experience: ! Start with familiar content (something to model the strategies).
! Experiment with pen/pencil types (my favorites are flairs ☺).
! Provide supplies for taking notes. ! Black and white first, embellish later. ! Build it into class routines. ! Make yourself a vulnerable learner too. ! Practice, Model, Practice, Model, …… ! Provide strategies for mistakes (think “cow spots”) ! Allow opting out after initial instruction (it’s not for everyone).
Classroom Ideas: ◊ General Notes ◊ Chapter Summaries ◊ Vocabulary ◊ Math Logs/Journals ◊ Game Directions ◊ Tickets out the Door ◊ Content Maps
