SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE

REMINDER: CAST YOUR VOTE BY FEBRUARY 9, 2016

By Barbara Hawkings, Superintendent

Dear Concrete School District Residents:

The Concrete School District is asking voters to renew a 3-year replacement levy on February 9th.   In fact, we are the only district asking our voters for only an Educational Programs and Operations Levy which includes technology. All of the other districts in Skagit County have a Bond and/or separate Technology Levy. This is not a new tax.  We are asking voters to renew an expiring tax. This is a replacement Educational Programs and Operations Levy request which supports the annual cost of operating our schools – it is not a construction bond request which is used to build or replace school buildings.  We, as a district, are “bond free,” meaning the only local dollars are the levy.  Our local levy is approximately 26% of the district revenue due to the cutbacks the state has made in funding education. Please be sure to cast your vote by February 9th!

The 2013 voter-approved levy will expire soon. A replacement levy has been proposed in its place. The replacement levy will provide the following:

ACCESSING SCHOOL DELAYS/CLOSURE INFORMATIONWe are approaching the time of year when the weather can change quickly. The bus drivers are reviewing with their students the importance of having a safe place to wait for their buses. Icy roads can cause slippery situations. When a bus approaches a bus stop to pick up students on icy roads, even the slightest application of brakes can cause the back of the bus to slide. Students need to stay back and not approach the bus until the bus is completely stopped and the driver has opened the door. The open bus door will be the signal for students that it is safe to board the bus. Please go over this information with your children.

Concrete School District has an automated system in place (SchoolMessenger) to automatically call families of our students in the event of emergency school closures, late start, and student absences. If you have a cell phone and would like to be contacted via cell, please contact your child’s school with your cell phone number. In the event of a delay or closure you should receive an automated call.

Concrete School District is also a member of the Puget Sound Emergency Communications System. Please use the following chart to fi nd our local radio and television channels that carry our district information in the event of a school delay or closure. They will also list certain roads or areas that will not receive bus service that day.

You can also go to fl ashalert.net on the web. KOMO’s website has school closure information as well.
