Happy New Year!

I have been reflecting, reviewing, and dreaming in these recent weeks. Each year I write out my goals for

the new year. And, each year, I manage not to achieve all my goals for that year – and that is okay. It is far easier to

achieve some of my goals if I’ve written them down.

As I’ve been reflecting on 2017 and the progress we have made as a faith community, I found that it was

YOU that came to mind. St. Peter’s remains a vital church because of you! It was through your generosity to the

church, to various outreach events, to the survivors of Hurricane Harvey, the Ugandan Kid’s Choir, Thanksgiving

and Christmas baskets and so much that we were able to make a difference in our neighborhood and out into the

world.

I am deeply grateful for your commitment to St. Peter’s. None of our successes would have been possible

without you. It has been my highest honor and greatest joy to serve as your pastor. I appreciate your continued

patience and support over the past year. Every day I learn from you; every day I am nurtured by you; and every

day I lift up prayers of gratitude that you are in my life.

Thank you for an outstanding 2017.

In memory of Robert L. Whitman, the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel of

Lorain are planting a young tree on public lands in the state of Ohio. This memorial tree will

be planted during the earliest appropriate season. It is the hope of Jeff Shimo that the Whit-

man family will find solace in the fact that this lovely tree, a symbolic of strength and future

growth, will grace the countryside.

The living memorial to Robert L. Whitman is a part of a large endeavor to restore

the landscape and our environment with the eternal beauty of living trees.

PRESCHOOL UPDATE January Preschool Update

Christmas is over and the New Year has begun. It was so nice to take the time to enjoy the wonder of

Christmas through the eyes of the children. They did a wonderful job singing in their Christmas program. The

parents and guests had a great time. Santa even stopped by for a quick visit!

This month the children will learn the letters Ee, Ii, Pp, Xx, and Gg, along with the number 6. We will also

introduce the color green and the 5 senses. To go along with the letter Pp, the children and teachers will be

wearing pajamas to school. We are looking forward to rolling out of bed to come to school.

For our first field trip of the year, we will be going to the Rebman’s to go bowling.

Now is the time to enroll your child for the up-coming school year. Look for registration paper in the

preschool hallway. You may also call the preschool for more information or schedule an observation. If inter-

ested, please call the school at (440)985-1972.

Have a Great New Year!

Mrs. Kosakowski, Ms. Nail, Mrs. Widener, and Mrs. Kobylka

February Preschool Update

It’s hard to believe that we are in the month of February. The children will continue to learn the letters

Qq, Hh, and Yy. They will also work on the numbers 7, 8, and the colors blue, purple, yellow, and the heart

shape for Valentine’s Day. This month, the children will also learn about rhyming.

We will be celebrating Valentine's Day with a fun party and movie. They will also be passing out Valen-

tines to all their friends in school.

Now is the time to register your child if you are thinking about preschool for the 2018-2019

school year. We offer classes for 3 year olds and classes for 4 year olds. Classes are filling up quickly, so don’t

delay. To schedule an observation or to ask questions, please call the preschool at (440) 9851972. You can

also e-mail the school at [email protected]. You can also catch the link to our e-mail address on

the preschool web page. We look forward to hearing from you.

Greeters

Do you know that a warm and friendly greeting

can be the first step of receiving new members at St.

Peter’s? It’s true!

We have three entrances into our Sanctuary:

Elevator Entrance, the stone-steps (front) entrance,

and the Walker Lobby (main) entrance., and we

need a GREETER at each of these entrances.

It’s so easy! Find the Sign-up sheet in Fireside

Room Lobby and select a Sunday to participate and

sign up. On your Sunday, arrive by 9:45 and go to

your selected entrance and be prepared to shake

hands, offer a friendly smile, and a warm welcome to

worship.

Easy-peasy.

We need you. YOU make a difference. Please

join in this ministry of welcoming!

RECIPES from the kitchens of St. Peter’s members:

Leftover Ham and Cheese Scalloped Potatoes

Ingredients

• ¼ cup (4 tablespoons) butter

• 2 cups whole milk or cream

• 2 teaspoons minced garlic

• 1 teaspoon salt

• 2 lbs. Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced*

• 1 cup (4 ounces) grated cheddar cheese

• 1 ½ cups (about 8 ounces) cooked, diced ham Garnish: fresh chopped

chives, green onions, or

parsley

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Spray an 11 x 7-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.

2. In a large pot, melt butter over medium-high heat. Whisk in milk, garlic, and salt. Add sliced potatoes.

3. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook (uncovered) for about 15 minutes (or until potatoes are tender). Gently stir the potatoes periodically as they cook.

4. Add the ham to the potato mixture.

5. Spoon into prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with grated cheese.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Let stand for 5-10 minutes before

Ingredients

• 12ounces quality white chocolate (like

Ghirardelli)

• 12ounces quality dark choco late (like Ghirardelli)

• 1⁄2cup crushed peppermint candy (I

use Starlite)

Directions

1. Line a 9x12 pan with parchment paper.

2. Melt the dark chocolate (use the method you prefer, either double boiler, or microwave - cook 30 seconds in a heat-proof bowl, stir and repeat until you have a smooth consistency.

3. Pour the melted dark chocolate on the parchment paper, spread the chocolate out until it is about 1/3" thick. You can do this by hitting the pan on the countertop repeatedly, or maybe you could use a spatula to spread the chocolate.

4. Melt the white chocolate, using the steps above. After the chocolate is smooth, pour it on top of the dark chocolate - trying to make the layers the same thickness. (it's best to do this step while the white chocolate is still very soft - I've had them separate when I broke them into pieces, I think the layers "stick" together better if the white chocolate has not hardened).

5. Unwrap the Starlite mints, or peppermints of your choice and put them into a heavy duty zip lock bag. Using a hammer

or meat tenderizer - crush the mints then, while the white chocolate is still melted sprinkle on top.

6. Let the chocolates harden in the refrigerator for 2 hours, then break the candy into pieces. This needs to be stored in

the refrigerator if you live in a warm/humid climate.

St. Peter’s would like to wish the happiest and best New Year to all of our members. We thank

you for all that you do within the church and community to bring God’s love and faith into the lives of

the ones that surround you. We hope that this new year brings many happy moments, days filled with

love and all your wishes are realized.

As with any new year there will also be bad days and we hope that in those days you turn to St.

Peter’s and the community we have built together to lift your spirits and support you through any

troubling times.

At year’s end, may we look back and be grateful for the moments that helped us grow and learn.

May we keep our happiest moments close to our hearts and share that joy with the ones in our lives.

May we grow closer to God and understand God’s ways in a more profound way, to share God’s love

with those in need of God’s grace.

Happy New Year!
