Hello all,

The weatherman says “a storm is coming” and everyone panics.

The preacher says “Jesus is coming” and no one cares.

The statement above was from a post I saw on Facebook. Isn’t it

strange what we consider important in our lives. So think about this

for a moment; we don’t want to get caught without milk, bread or

toilet paper during a storm, but it’s ok to get caught unprepared for

the return of Jesus. I find this a little concerning to say the least.

We plan and prepare for so many things in our lives such as educa-

tion, weddings, buying a house, significant birthday and anniversary celebrations, and

children just to name a few. Many times we spend more energy preparing and planning

for things of this world and we neglect to prepare for the coming of our Lord.

When you hear those words, “the coming of the Lord” where do your thoughts go? The

coming of the Lord is a phrase that causes us to think about Christ’s second coming:

the time when Christ will return to earth and those who believe in Him will be taken

up into the heavens. But that is not the only time we need to be prepared. As we live

in this world we face illness, broken relationships, loss of loved ones, loss of employ-

ment and other worldly issues and temptations that are hard for us to bear. As we

study and live out the scriptures we become prepared to face the hardships thrown

at us by this world because we find hope, love, joy and peace that only comes through

the understanding that ultimately God has a better plan for us. Through our study

of the scriptures we learn how to draw strength through prayer and Christian

fellowship. Through our study we learn that as we disciple others on how to be

prepared we continue to strengthen our preparedness. Through study and prayer

we gain a power that helps us to be strong and stand firm in Christ. So are you pre-

pared to meet each day as it brings us joys and concerns in this realm? Are you pre-

pared for the coming of the Lord when He comes for you individually or when he comes

to redeem the world?

This quote is from Benjamin Franklin “By failing to

prepare you are preparing to fail.” I would hate for

any of us not to be prepared when it is either our

time to die or when it is time for Christ’s return.

Our preparation is a continuous part of our Chris-

tian life. Brothers and sisters in Christ, my prayer

for all of us is that we will go forth and prepare for

the coming of our Lord.

Trustee Committee Update As we move forward in the new year, we find some new projects that need the trustees' attention as well as a few from 2018.

• Rider Brick Masonry repaired the brick wall at the south side of the parking lot exit. Someone in a pickup truck exited the parking lot on Thursday evening, November 29, and knocked out a portion of bricks from the wall. As we write, the person hasn't been identified.

• The trustees purchased four new Michelin tires for the church van from Bob's Tires in Martinsburg. We had three estimates to compare prices. The old tires were over fourteen years old.

• The small water fountain in the Educational hallway has been repaired and placed back in service.

• Martinsburg Service Center has signed a contract with Calvary to provide snow removal for our parking lot and sidewalks during 2019. They do a very good job of clearing the snow.

• Our trustees have installed fifteen new large hooks around the balcony area of the sanctu-ary for hanging Christmas garland.

Calvary's 150th Planning Committee Financial Report

The campaign ran from September 2017, thru December 2018. Contributions from church

members and friends of Calvary totaled $113,517.95, and $126,700.37 from church investments

for a total $240,218.32. We spent $172,143.37, on renovation projects and the 150th Celebration

items. This leaves a balance of $68,074.95, for stained glass windows. We have scheduled the

last three stained glass windows in the sanctuary to be renovated in late spring or early

summer with Raynal Studios of New Market, Virginia. The cost will be approximately $53,235

leaving a balance of $14,839.95. This money will be used toward the last six stained glass

windows in the narthex that need to be renovated. Your contributions can still be made to

expedite the renovation of the remaining windows.

When I think of February, I almost immediately associate it with Valentine’s Day.

It is appropriate then that we begin the month with communion in celebration of our

Lord’s great act of love on the cross. Our anthem is called “The Greatest of These” and

sets the text of 1 Corinthians 13 to music. We know 1 Corinthians 13 as the love chapter

of the Bible and it is a familiar passage read at many weddings. I expect that we will

hear much on the subject this month – as well we should. If we are looking for a Biblical

definition of love then here is a great place to start. We would all do well to meditate

on this passage before engaging in any sort of Christian debate or arguments.

On February 10th I found the lectionary readings had a theme about “lips” and

speech. Isaiah and Peter had similar reactions to their encounters with the Lord (Isaiah

6 & Luke 5). Both men were immediately made aware of their sinfulness and unworthi-

ness in their present condition. They were ashamed and desired repentance claiming,

“I am a man of unclean lips.” After being reassured by their maker they were both put

to work in His service. God has a way of making the unclean things clean and putting

them to use. All that is required is a repentant heart. Our anthem, “On Our lips” will be

reminiscent of many Psalms of praise.

The third Sunday will feature our handbell choirs and we will end the month with

a song about trusting in God’s perfect plan called “Order My Steps.” Psalm 37:5 says

“Commit your way to the Lord and put your trust in Him, and he will bring it to pass.”

Verse 7 then says, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” If we put our

problem in God’s hands we must allow God to work His will as He sees fit.

I pray that we may be unified - never at the expense of His truths but rather

unified in His truth. I pray that our decisions would begin in Christian love and be

practiced in maturity and Grace. May that love be patient and kind and our speech not

come off as a loud clashing cymbal. Be mindful that love finds no joy in unrighteousness

but rejoices in the truth. May we hold fast to sound doctrine and let the Lord order our

steps in the coming days.

the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.” – 1 Timothy 1:5-11

pharmacists, funeral directors, hospitals, nursing homes and oth-ers who help serve patients by delivering them an assortment of

cookies. We need your help making cookies for this event.
