Volume 4 – February 2018
Nomads News Official Newsletter of Nomads Golf Club Perth Western Australia
I was privileged and honoured to be part of the 12-man Australian squad to
participate in the 2018 Royal Nationals in Cape Town, South Africa, played at the
132-year-old Royal Cape Golf Club, making this the oldest golf club in South
Africa. Despite the worst drought in living memory and the prospect of even
more severe but essential water saving measures, the course was in excellent
condition. Players encountered, and were challenged by fast running fairways,
newly refurbished bunkers and firm, smooth, tournament grade greens, to test the
best approach shots and well-read putts. To Ken Walker and his team I tip my hat
and take this opportunity to say a huge thank you for tireless efforts to make the
tournament truly special. From the time of registration to the final flag lowering
and prizegiving everything went off with military precision. Well done, Ken Walker
and his Western Province Nomads team for a fantastic week.
For those interested in stats, 396 players participated in the event and played a
total of 1584 games over 4 days.
During my extended holiday I also managed to join Natal Nomads at Amanzimtoti
for their monthly game. The weather gods were against us and most of the game
was played in the rain. Yours truly still managed a respectable 32 points off a 19
handicap. It felt strange to play a Nomads game during the week and having a
break at the half-way house after 9-holes.
In this month’s issue we are launching a new column, Shooting From The Lip, where
you, the reader of Nomads News gets an opportunity to have your say (and be
heard). Feel free to submit your comments whether positive or negative. You may
remain anonymous if you wish…….only the “Fr”-Editor will know and my lips are
sealed

Captain’s Corner
Let’s put our hands together to congratulate the four Perth Nomads (Vaughan
Nothnagel, B Anderson, Fred Meijer and Ken Llloyd) on their achievements at the
recently held Royal Nationals played at Royal Cape Golf Club, Cape Town, South
Africa, in extremely dry, warm and windy (thanks to the ever-present South-Easter)
conditions. For the record, the Australian squad was triumphant in (again) bringing
home the International Trophy. Playing 4 rounds of golf in, sometimes, trying
conditions is never easy but the Aussie squad took it all in their stride, scoring a total of
1414 points, averaging 30 points per player, per day. Individual scores for Aussie
Squad, for the week –
1st – Wayne Richardson 127, 2nd Ken Lloyd 124, 3rd Vaughan Nothnagel 123, 4th Fred
Meijer 122, 5th Mark Howard-Brown 121, 6th Ian Ross 118, 7th Kel Herini, joint 8th B
Anderson 116, Anthony Cihkonski 116, 9th Jo Landsberg 115, 10th Barry Schutte 111
and 11th Nel Schoeman 104.
On the home from there was some good scoring at the Kwinana game with two 40-
Pointers being recorded by Johann Herbst (41) and Clint Cowan (40) – well done
gents.
A bit of a let-down was the sudden and unexpected cancelation/postponement of
the much anticipated NvS Challenge Cup event due to last minute pull-outs. Gents,
it would be appreciated if, once you have committed to participate, you diarise the
date (preferably written on a stone tablet) and in the event of you having to pull out
for whatever reason, you take the responsibility to contact a player to fill in on your
behalf. There is always someone who would be willing to step up to the plate to help
out. More on the future of this event further on in this issue of Nomads News.
Last, but not least. A representative from the Black Dog Institute will be at our
Wanneroo game where he/she will be receiving the proceeds of the 2017 Charity
Day event.
That’s All Folks, see you at Wanneroo, April 8th
Hector
SHOOTING FROM THE LIP………..
A new column being launched this month creates an opportunity for you to have your say (and be heard), vent your
spleen, have a hissy fit, spit your dummy, positive (or negative) feedback, etc. You may remain anonymous if you wish
– so no names, no packdrill. E-mail your submission to the “Fr”-Editor at [email protected] who will ensure
that all is above board and that no-one is hurt during, what could at times, be confronting reading matter
NvS Challenge Cup Cancelation - The following was received from a very disappointed member -
“I just wanted to express my extreme dissatisfaction at this weekend’s cancelation of the North vs South game due to so many last-minute player cancelations. I understand that we are not always in control of circumstances but seriously this was well advertised, organised and communicated that there really is no excuse. It was also very embarrassing as a member to turn up there today and to be associated with this mess and having to feel that we’d let Wanneroo Golf Club down so badly. Nonetheless the pro was very amicable considering. This can’t be allowed to happen again as this not only disrespectful to fellow members but so damaging to us as a roaming club..”.
Someone else wrote :
“This is very disappointing and frustrating, lots of people seem to have cancel at the last minute, this makes it impossible to organise games like this and give us a bad name with golf club (Wanneroo) when we constantly have to call them to change the number of players and then finally cancelling”

GOLF QUIPS
golf.ing, a duffer’s dictionary by Henry Beard & Roy McKie,
continued……..
stance – The placement of a player’s feet in relation to the ball and
the target line in the brief period just prior to the beginning of the
swing while they are still positioned inside his shoes.
stimpmeter – Device used to measure the speed of the greens on a
golf course. Similar instruments include the hackometer, which
computes the length of the rough; the inertial slomoscope, which
assesses the speed of play; the gas chromograph, which rates the
digestibility of the food in the halfway house; gougeguage, which
calculates the mark-up of the prices in the pro-shop; and the
asshologram, which appraises the unpleasantness of the club
members.
streak – A score of pat on two consecutive holes, or one birdie in a
row.
stroke – Any forward motion of the club that is made with the intention
of hitting the ball and is observed by another golfer.
sudden death – Term for the situation that exists when a match is tied
at the end of 18 holes and the player who feels the least amount of
confidence in the outcome of a playoff suddenly remembers the
death, earlier in the day, of a beloved aunt.
sweet spot – The specific place that produces maximum accuracy
and power and a solid feeling of perfect contact when a ball id
struck. This point varies from club to club, but generally speaking it’s in
the dead centre of the “bland belt” which is very near the “rotten
region”, in the middle of the “lousy area”, and surrounded by the
“loathsome zone”.
swing key – A simple thought, concept, or idea that improves a
player’s swing for more than 15 minutes or a minimum of three holes.
swingweight – A measurement of the relationship between the weight
of the clubhead and the weight of the shaft used to indicate the
“feel” of the club. A separate pair of measurements evaluates the
shaft’s ability to communicate a finger-stinging shock when an iron is
sharply topped on a cold day (stingweight) and the ease with which
the club can be thrown (flingweight)
10th Australian Nomads Nationals
NOOSA SPRINGS, 12>14 October 2018
The 10th Australian Nomads Nationals will be played at Noosa Springs, 2hrs North of Brisbane on the Sunshine Coast over the weekend 12 to 14 October 2018. Nomads Perth had great representation at the 2017 Nationals at Kooindah Waters and we would like to attempt an even better response for the 2018 event. At the time of going to print with this edition of Nomads News, we have already had requests from members to add them to the list of interested parties. (see below) . If your name does not appear on the list and you are seriously contemplating attending the 10th Australian Nationals in October 2018, contact Fred Meijer at 0432 083 040 – [email protected] or Ken Lloyd at 0437 602 004 – [email protected] - PS. Ken Lloyd and Fred Meijer, having done such sterling work for the 2017 Nationals, have been “appointed” as “Tournament Co-ordinators” for Perth. – Between these two ALL arrangements will be communicated to interested parties. We have it on good authority that they may even be in a position to arrange a bulk booking for flights to and from Brisbane, saving you money, putting you first.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
It was indeed disappointing to, upon our return from South Africa, that, due to far too many last-
minute pull-outs to have to take a decision to postpone the event to a later date. We can
assure you that this will be the absolute last time that something like this happens. Ken, Cris,
David and Fred are, needless to say, devastated, having spent many hours of planning and
preparing the event and then, at the death having to cancel. Embarrassing to say the least. Not
only to the Nomads Brand but also for Wanneroo Golf Club, having to turn way guests and
returning unused golf carts which they had to borrow to accommodate us on the day.
The event is now being rescheduled to be played in September (date to be advised) at
Mandurah Golf Club. In the event of a draw, another game will be played at a central location
to decide a winner.
In addition, expressions of interest will again be circulated and if you are picked to play, you will
be held responsible for costs incurred if you withdraw at any stage prior to the event.
Further communication in this regard will be made available as soon as a date has been locked
in.
Kind Regards
