She is the recipient of theSilver Merit Award from the Polish govern-ment and the Chopin’s Passport Award.

About ReBorn

Founded in 2015, ReBorn comprises leaderMaria Pomianowska, Aleksandra Kauf,Iwona Rapacz, and Patrycja Napierała. Kauf(suka) studied cello at the Krakow Academyof Music from 2009 to 2012, then took upthe suka under Pomianowska’s tutelage.Rapacz (bass suka) also studied cello andhas worked with the Polish Radio Orchestraand the Polish Chamber Philharmonic.Napierała (frame drum) works as a sessionmusician with the Euro Acoustics recordingstudio in Vienna. The group releasedReborn: Voice of Suka (2016), which in April2017 was named to Songlines’ “Top of theWorld” album list.

About the Instruments

The Biłgoraj suka is a traditional string instru-ment originating from the town of Biłgoraj insoutheastern Poland. A long-lost medievalancestor of the violin, the suka has a crudepegbox and a wide neck, and unlike modernstring instruments, is played vertically, usingthe fingernail technique. The Płock fiddleoriginated in the city of Płock in centralPoland. Dating to the 15th century, the Płockfiddle—a box-shaped instrument with sixstrings and no fingerboard—is even moreprimitive than the suka. Pomianowska wasthe first modern musician to play and recon-struct these instruments.

LINCOLN CENTER FESTIVAL 2017 NOMADIC NIGHTS: MUSIC AT THE CROSSROADS

About the Program

Tonight’s program is inspired by BohemianTrio’s debut album Okónkolo (2017), whichtakes its title from Yosvany Terry’s originalwork by the same name. The okónkolo is the“baby” or smallest member of the Batádrums used in Yoruba religious ceremoniesfor over 500 years in present-day Nigeria. TheAfrican diaspora brought the Batá drums toCuba where they were absorbed intoSantería ceremonies and, along with thechékere, now feature in Afro-Cuban music. The okónkolo traditionally serves astimekeeper while the “father” itótele and“mother” iyá drums converse, improvise, and entertain.

In Terry’s title song “Okónkolo,” thisdrumming tradition is both a metaphor for theinteraction between saxophone, cello, andpiano, and a reflection of the cultural diffusionthat embodies Bohemian Trio and its music.Terry also draws inspiration from his nativeCuba in “Tarde en la Lisa,” a sound paintingof a bustling Havana neighborhood, and“Punto Cubano de Domingo,” which evokesthe Cuban countryside.

Inspired by the trio’s unique brand of music-making, Emilio Solla adapted his original bandversion of “Llegará, Llegará, Llegará” off hisalbum Second Half (2014); an intimate workfor saxophone, cello, and piano, it showcasesArgentine folk riffs and heartfelt lyricism.

Also on Okónkolo are works by Pedro Giraudoand Manuel Valera, some of which use Latinand jazz idioms while dovetailing classicalsounds and techniques. Giraudo’s “Push Gift”

is a relentless Argentinean milonga thatborrows Baroque imitation and Impressionisticharmonies. Valera’s Impromptu pays homageto George Gershwin, who—as an early 20th-century classical composer—looked toAmerican jazz for inspiration. Giraudo’s“Hiroshima” is a sensuous ballad fit for a NewYork City jazz club.

Rounding out the program, Passacaille fromMaurice Ravel’s Trio for violin, cello, andpiano—here transcribed for saxophone, cello, and piano—provides a purely classical foilthat, despite a different musical vocabulary, somehow speaks to the other works on thealbum through common melodic andharmonic nuances.

About Bohemian Trio

Despite being immersed in different culturaland musical backgrounds, Yosvany Terry(saxophone and chékere), Orlando Alonso(piano), and Yves Dharamraj (cello) formedthe Bohemian Trio in 2013. The threemusicians were drawn to the idea that theirblend of traditions would speak to the truevoice of the Americas: a cacophony ofcultures that, together, forges a new identitythat transcends Old World boundaries. TheBohemian Trio intertwines Afro-Cubanrhythms with the sweeping melodies ofclassical, the improvisation of jazz, and thecelebration of Latin dance. Bohemian Triomade its debut in 2013 at the Music of NowMarathon at Symphony Space, and hasperformed at Wave Hill, Bargemusic (as partof the Make Music New York Festival), andSpoleto Festival USA.

About Tcheka

Born in a small, remote spot on the island ofSantiago, Cape Verde, Tcheka has created amusical style that is a testament to the globalinfluences he has embraced. His essence isimpossible to pin down—he is neithermodernist nor traditionalist, and his musicresists any easy categorization or comparison. While referencing multiple genres from CapeVerde—such as batuku, funaná, finason, tabanka, morna, and coladeira—his music isalso a busy intersection of Brazilian and Africanpop, traditional forms, folk, jazz, blues, rock, literature, anthropology, and film.

He has released five albums, including Argui!(2003), Nu Monda (2007), Lonji (2008), andDor De Mar (2011). In 2005 he won theprestigious Découvertes award from RadioFrance International for Nu Monda. His fifthalbum, the recently released Boka Kafé,consists of solo pieces that highlight hisinimitable guitar and unmistakable vocals. Hesings in Cape Verdean Creole, so Portuguesespeakers will catch most of the meanings inthe songs, which mainly touch on socialissues and experiences on the islands: pain,

slavery, sexual harassment, emigration, colonialism, mourning, and religion. Tchekaalso explores more upbeat contexts, voicingthe collective joys and hopes of his fellowCape Verdeans.

Tcheka has performed with acclaimed CapeVerdean singer Cesaria Evora, and in 2015 hecollaborated with South Africa’s DerekGripper at the Harare International Festival ofthe Arts. He has also worked with acclaimedPortuguese pianist Mário Laginha. Theircollaboration, borne of friendship and mutualadmiration, was featured at the 2016 Jazz inMarciac Festival (France), and an album iscurrently in the works.

Tcheka’s many worldwide performancesinclude the Festival Internacional de Jazz(Portugal), Ethno Jazz Festival (Poland),Tallinn Music Week (Estonia), HarareInternational Festival of the Arts (Zimbabwe),and the Cape Town Nu World Festival (SouthAfrica).

Looking Ahead: Le Trio Joubran

On July 29, in the final event of the Nomadic Nights series, the oud ensemble comprising Nazareth-born brothers Samir, Wissam, and Adnan Joubran and percussionist Youssef Hbeisch performs an immersive tribute to the late Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. In the Shadow of Words is a soulful dialogue between worlds, with the trio’s unique blend of traditional Arabic music, jazz, rock, and flamenco responding to Darwish’s recorded voice, all within a rich multimedia environment.
