Tips / undocumented functions:

- At the top of the main-menu and every folder, the keys 1 to 9 are shortcuts to the icons 1-9

- A shortcut on the left menukey in standby-mode will take more time to open than a shortcut onthe right menukey. Reason: The left key is also used for the keylock so it shortly waits forpressing the * button.

- While writing text press and hold "#" to switch between Alpha mode and Number mode. Youcan also press a key long to insert its number.

- In standby-mode, press and hold 0 to launch your wap home page.

- If you have your keylock activated just press the on/off button to turn on your backlight to lookat the time when it's dark without having to unlock the keypad.

- To keep the backlight on, run Torch (freeware), press and hold the Menu button and gosomewhere else on the phone.

Your files in MMC are stored in multiple (disk) blocks.So if you format using 16K block, the space used will be 16K eventhough your file is just 1K.

If you buy MMC, it is usually preformatted with 16K block. Therefore alot of space is wasted asmost installed program files are usually less than 2K.

You will need a card reader to do this:-

1. Connect card reader and copy all your files in the MMC to computer disk.(Make sure you set the show all/hidden/os files to "on")2. Do a format of the MMC using command line "format" and use the /A=size option.Alternative, you can use the Disk Management in Adminstrative Tools to format.Make sure you select FAT. For 256MB MMC, smallest block you can use is 4K, 128MB is 2K,64Mb is 1K and 32MB is 512B.

(Note: You cannot use the phone "format MMC" to do this as the format just clear the allocationtable and does not change the block size)

3. Copy back all files to MMC.

Note - If you bought your Nokia on UK Vodafone or UK Cellnet you do not need to check thisbecause they both transmit on GSM900, and they don't lock the phones. However if you boughtyour phone on UK Orange or UK One2one your phone may be blocked. The reason is that theyboth transmitt on GSM1800. To make a call on GSM1800 you need what is known as a "Dualband" phone. A dual band phone is able to transmit on both GSM900 and GSM1800, so theylock the phones so you can't use it with any other network simcard. If you find that your phone islocked you can try different software to unlock it. (we havn't found one that works yet), or youcan ask your service provider who will gladly exchange the 10 digit code for about £35.

THE JAMES BOND TRICK

If you short-circuit theleft middle and right pins on the bottom of the phone with all connectionstouching each other, the Nokia software hangs! The profile "Headset" will be activated. Beforeyou do this just activate the "Automatic Answer" in the headset profile and set the ringingvolume to "Mute". Now you can use your phone for checking out what people are talking aboutin a room. Just place it under a table in a room and call it. Enhanced Full Rate will give you much better sound quality when you enable it. The new EFRcodec uses the ACELP compression technology. This technology allows for much great voicequality in the same number of bits as the older Full Rate codec. The older technology was calledLPC-RPE. Both operate at 13 kilobits, but you take up more space on the network, so they cancharge you more. Talk-time is reduced with about 5%

Half Rate will give you poorer voice quality, which gives the service provider the opportunity tohave more calls on the network, and you might get a lower charge from them. Will give you 30%longer talk-time.

Change Alpha TagThe alpha tag is the message that is displayed on your phone when in digital coverage. This isnormally transmitted by the network, but can be overidden to display a different tag. This is doneby creating a tag for a personal/residential zone in the phone, and setting this zone to have thesame settings as your normal carrier. So when the phone identifies the network system itbelieves it is in the personal/residential zone and displays the tag you have programmed.1) Enter programming mode of the phone by keying *3001#12345#2) Find out the ID of your operator by entering the NAM1 menu. Cell BroadcastWhile Short Message Service (SMS) can be configured as a personal service, Cell Broadcast isa general service which is designed for subscribers of a specific cell or topic. For example, asubscriber to cell 050 in England will receive information on the GSM tower currently being usedby their phone. This new concept brings a whole new meaning to the term mobile

How To Do it1.) look at the name the first MMC is named and then take it out2.) put in the new MMC3.) format and name the new MMC the same as the other one4.) Take back out the New MMC5.) put the old MMC into a MMC Reader that is connected to your PC6.) Coppy all of the MMC *make sure you have "show hidden files" enabled on your PC. seeaditional info for this setting at the bottom of this message*7.) Make a new folder on your Desktop and Past all files into that folder.8.) Take out the Old MMC and Insert the new MMC into the Reader9.) Open the new folder on your Desktop

10.) Highlight all of these files and folders, right click on one of the files or folders, select"Coppy"11.) "Past" files and folders to the New MMC12.) put the New MMC back into the cellphone, power up, and your done.
