We are a non-proit social business. Our aim is to combine great design with great air trade
projects in order to make as much impact or air trade as we can. We have approached eighteen
designers and illu strators to work with one o Nepals ounding air trade groups or a coll ection
or the Design Museum shop. This project is designed to provide work and literacy or adult
weavers, and schooling or their children.
Node are Chris Haughton and Akshay Sthapit. Chris is a childrens book author and illustrator who
has been working in air trade or the last nine years. He was listed in TIME magazines DESIGN
100 or the work he has been doing or air trade. In 2010, Chris spent eight months in India and
Nepal working with air trade groups. There, he began developing rugs with a airtrade technical
school. Chris sought Akshays help to grow the project. Akshay is a Kathmandu based entrepreneur
with a passion or social projects. Together they call themselves NODE with the aim o connecting
designers and artists together with crat based social projects. Ater a successul exhibition in the
SO FAR THE FUTURE design gallery on Lambs Conduit St, London, they have created this collection
which will be exclusively available rom the Design Museum Shop.

We produce all our rugs with Kumbeshwar Technical School in Kathmandu, Nepal. Kumbeshwar
was set up by the Khadgi amily who are traditionally rom the pode community, the lowest caste
in Nepal. In 1983 the Khadgi amily created a non-proit technical school to help their caste out
o poverty. Their work now has now extended to all disadvantaged individuals. Their weaving
school recruits disadvantaged adults and oers an adult education and support centre. As well
as given air wages, their weavers are taught literacy and skil ls. With proits rom the sales
o rugs and crats they also und a large school o 260 with well t rained and well paid teachers,
providing students with ree books and meals. In addition, they und an orphanage or 25 chil dren.
KTS are a ounder member o Fair Trade Nepal and are WFTO accredited.

We produce our carpets entirely by hand using traditional Tibetan carpet making techniques
o the highest possible quality. Nepal is well known or its high quality weaving and this project
was set up with help rom skill ed master weavers. All our carpets are made rom Tibetan wool.
The wool rom high altitude Tibetan breeds o sheep is naturally thick and Tibetan rugs
are amous or their thickness and durabili ty. The wool is hand spun i nto thread, hand dyed
with natural and non-polluting dyes and then hand-knotted on our looms i nto carpet.

Node have come rom a background in digital imaging and we worked closel y with all the ar tists
and the weavers to ind the best possi ble ways to convert each artwork into woven rugs.

beatrice alemagna
eatrice Alemagna was born in Bologna, Italy, 1973. She is an author
nd illustrator o childrens books. In 1996 she was awarded her irst
major accolade, winning irst prize in the worldwide illustration
ompetition Figures Futur (ParisFrance). In 1998 she began working
with the Centre Pompidou as a poster artist which continued until 2010.
uring the last decade she has received several notable mentions
nd awards, including: Attention talentFNAC, Prix Octogones,
lustrated Book PrizeRueil, Prix Baobab du salon du livre Montreuil
twice selected), Book Prize Taipei (Taiwan, 2006), Bologna Ragazzi
Award (2007)(Special mention) and Prix Andersen Italy (2010).
Alemagna has produced twenty French books, which have also
een translated into 13 dierent languages. She has had solo
xhibitions in a wide selection o galleries in France and has also
hown in Italy, Portugal and Japan. In 2009 she created a character
or the national Italian newspaper LUnit (Piccoletta). In 2010
he became the Director o Ramino, a small collection o picture
ooks or Muses Nationaux de France. In 2012 she began two
igh proile collaborations; the irst with French toy manuacturerjeco and the second with homeware supplier Elica, where Beatrice
as designed a range o plates. Her books in English are currently
ublished by Phaidon.

anna Annukka is a designer and printmaker. Her distinctive style
bold colour and pattern is infuenced by her childhood summers
pent in northern Finland. Her memories o camping in the night less
apland wilderness, the orests, lakes and wildlie remain a constant
nspiration. Her irst commercial application back in 2006 saw
er design the album Under the Iron Sea, British group Keanes second
million selling album. She has since been in busy demand with clients
uch as British Vogue, Apple and Vodaone. Sanna became a designer
or Finnish textiles and ashion brand, Marimekko in 2008. Her irst
ollection was a celebration o The Kalevala, Finlands national literary
pic. Her ollow up collection in 2012 celebrated the landscapes,
rchitecture and culture o Finland. Her irst book, an illustrated
ersion o Hans Christian Andersens The Fir Tree, was published
n 2012 and is the beginning o many more illustrated books to come.

esley barnes
esley Barnes is an animator and illustrator who lives and works
n Glasgow. She uses a graphic and colourul style to tell stories
with both her illustration and moving image work. Her animations
ave shown in competition at ilm estivals all over the world and
ave won a number o awards. Lesley recently expanded into
lustration and has worked or clients such as the Victoria and Albert

Applied Arts in Paris. Following this, she studied visual
ommunication at the Kunsthochschule-Berlin Weissensee.
n 2005 Chamo returned to Paris where she dedicated hersel

evin Waldron was born & raised in Dublin. Following a degree
