OCTOBER 2012 NO WINE TASTING NIGHT IN OCTOBERNEXT WINE TASTING IS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND Past Presidents… In my last article I mentioned the pictures of ACC’s past presidents that are on display in the Board Room. I mentioned them in the context of telling our club championship history, which is fitting since in the formative days of golf clubs the office of president grew out of the club championship contest. It was election by combat; the club champion became the president. The memory of this ancient practice is preserved for posterity in the wonderful driving-in ceremony at St. Andrews. The 1894 ceremony featuring Lord Balfour and “Old Tom” Morris is included with this article. Nobody does ceremony like the English and the Scots. But this election by combat had its drawbacks as the skills of a champion golfer did not necessarily translate into being an effective chairman, as I mentioned in a previous Arrows article devoted to those few who did possess both qualities. I also mentioned in last month’s article that it would be nice to have pictures of all the past champions displayed around the clubhouse. It would be a gallery of golfing champions. What is on display in the Board Room is a gallery of business and academic leaders who devoted their considerable talents and time to ensuring that there be an Arrowhead Country Club for those golfers to have something to be a champion of. The golf champion is the happy recipient of numerous kudos and congratulatory handshakes. The club president in the meantime is doing all the heavy lifting regarding the problems that come with the office, and his efforts are usually unheralded, regardless of the herculean efforts entailed. Even going back to the beginnings of golf it takes some digging to ferret out who was responsible for the formation of the Royal and Ancient Club. It was probably John Whyte-Melville. In a history of St. Andrews, after many paragraphs dedicated to his contributions to the club beginning in 1816, and alluding to the fact that he was given the honor of laying the foundation stone of the Royal and Ancient Clubhouse, it should be noted that when he was laid to rest, in 1870, he was referred to as the “Father of the Club.” In that same vein one might ask ‘who is the “Father of Arrowhead Country Club”?’ In regards to John Whyte-Melville, it is said from the day he sat foot on St. Andrews he exercised considerable influence. In the early days of Arrowhead, nobody exercised more influence than Gail Stockton. After the club was formed in 1944 one of the first orders of business was to seek out a new site for the clubhouse. This takes a great deal of planning and logistical skills. Carrying the burden and suffering the second guessing of those relocation years from 1946, ‘47, ‘48 and ‘49 were Dr. E.L. Tisinger, Brud Shay, Ken Hunter and Don Knapp. An ongoing concern since 1927 was the bisection of the course by Marshall Blvd. The removal of this thoroughfare was finally accomplished when President Neal Bowen asked Dr. John Lounsbury (see photo) to meet with Clyde Kane of the State Highway Department in 1961. Dr. Lounsbury was President and Chief Executive Officer of San Bernardino Valley College in the 40’s and 50’s. After his retirement Dr. John brought his considerable influence to the benefit of Arrowhead. As a member of the Board he started and edited a club newsletter and took on the Presidency in 1963. Finally, another note worth making in any discussions of this type is the name of Leslie Harris. In a previous article I mentioned how valuable the negotiation skills of Mr. Harris were in the purchase of the club from Arrowhead Springs Hotel in 1944. He came to the aid of the club again in 1946 when he purchased a section of land for $7,500.00 on the west side of Parkside, just on the outside chance the club might need it in their search for a new site. When it became evident that the land was not needed he sold it to the club at his original cost. The club was later able to sell the property at a substantial profit. Mr. Leslie Harris was not a president of the club or a club champion, I don’t think he even played golf, but he always had our back. I’ve just named a few of the community leaders who have taken on the responsibilities of running the club and accepting the attendant stress that goes with having responsibilities such as terminating certain department heads, not to mention terminating, albeit on extremely rare occasions, certain members for inappropriate behavior, in addition to encompassing the regular expectations of leadership and communication that accompany such an office. But what should be mentioned, and is often unheeded, is they all do this for no pay. Without these key leaders who dedicate their personal resources, especially time and energy, the Arrowhead Country Club we all love today simply would not be the same.

  • From The Clubhouse ManagerAs always I like to share our recent food andbeverage financials with you. Year to date weare on budget and still in the black overall inthis department. We are very proud of the hardwork our clubhouse, dining room and kitchenstaff have continued to put forth to realizethese incredible changes.

    From the SuperSeptember brought us another hot month with elevendays above 100 degrees and only one day below 90. Thehigh temperatures provided great weather for growingBermuda and we were able to make good progress onareas that were previously predominately cool seasongrass. The summer was a long, hard push, but themaintenance staff has done an excellent job preparingour Bermuda fairways for the limited over seed thiswinter.

    Over the past few weeks I have received a lot ofquestions regarding this year’s over seeding programand what golfers should expect. This year’s modifiedprogram will bring several changes and challenges. Theareas that will be over seeded are the tee tops, greensurrounds, approaches, and primary roughs(approximately from the intermediate-cut to the treeline). Some other high-traffic areas will also be seeded.Since the course will only be closed seven days, golferswill be exposed to some facets of over seeding that theyaren’t necessarily accustomed to. During thegermination and establishment phases of the seed, wewill need to irrigate the seeded areas every two hours.Members need to be aware that the golf course will bemore moist during this period, and also, due to theconstant irrigation cycles, member should be advisedthat irrigation water will be running amongst play.During a typical over seed when the course is closed,these cycles would run automatically without warning;

    however, since our golf course will be open to play, thegolf maintenance staff will have to manually runirrigation stations amongst play. Every step will be takento disrupt play as little as possible, but someinterruptions should be expected. For example, golfersmay arrive at a tee during a shot irrigation cycle and mayhave a wait a few minutes for the cycle to complete.Seeding will be completed on the week of the 15th. Theadditional irrigation and establishment will continue forapproximately 21-23 days after seeding. We ask for yourpatience as we do our best to provide a quality surfacefor the winter.

    Although some people might think that all that iscompleted is the course over-seeding during the closureperiod, there are actually several other tasks that arecompleted during the closure. During closure, the greenswill receive their monthly deep-tining. The onlydifference is that they will be heavily top-dressed withsand. Since the course was closed for an extended periodof time in the past, the sand was completely worked-inbefore reopening and the greens most likely playedfaster and firmer. Since we will only be closing for oneweek this year, members should expect the greens tostill have a fair amount of sand on them. This will alsoimpact the speed of the greens. The condition of thegreens should return to normal within two to threeweeks. During closure, we will also take to repair andmaintain any course furniture, as well as complete anumber of other small projects.

    Since this year is the first time that the club has decidedto not fully over seed the course in quite a long time,there will most definitely be a learning curve foreveryone. One of the most important issues thateveryone will need to work together on is trafficmanagement. Although I am very confident in thestrong Bermuda base that we will be going into winterwith, it is very important that everyone is cognizant ofany course stakes and or signage as it will take the turflonger to recover from stress caused by wear.Throughout the winter, there may be days when golferswill only be permitted to drive in the rough. Followingany guidelines set out by the golf staff and golfmaintenance will be very important to our success thiswinter. When I attended Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, wehad a motto in the Ag Department: “Don’t be a cow.”What it meant was don’t follow the same patterns everyday and don’t always follow the crowd. Whether it wasnot sitting in the same seat, or taking a different routeto class every day, we were always encouraged to strayfrom the norm. I think this motto works great for golfcourses. Remember when leaving the cart path toalways “scatter” and not follow directly behind the cartin front of you. And always take a different route fromtee to green in order to be sure not wear down hightraffic areas. This winter I encourage everyone to takepart in my favorite Cal Poly motto and “Don’t be a cow!”As always, we look forward to seeing everyone on thecourse and look forward to enjoying a great fall andwinter.
